INSIDE Dear Friends: It’s a challenge to sort through a year of accomplishments and attempt to highlight them within the pages of this report, particularly when we have so many accomplishments with long-lasting, positive effects on our college. In reviewing the pages that follow, I’ve tried to summarize them into six different groups:

News. (pp. 3-6, 8-11)

Keeping you informed is the primary goal of our Community Report. While our accomplishments this past year vary in size and scope, they all point toward tremendous progress and momentous growth.

Foundation. (p. 7)

Thirty-five years of tremendous success for our College Foundation was recently celebrated by honoring four families who have been integral in insuring that success throughout the years. Numbers alone can’t explain the extraordinary influence those families have had on students, alumni, the community, and the college, although attempting to count the smiles they’ve generated would be a good start.

Faculty. (pp. 12 & 13) I can’t say enough about the hard work and dedication of our faculty. That is why we decided to dedicate our center pages to them. I only wish we had room to highlight more of them.

Athletics. (pp. 14-16)

Switching to four-year athletics, joining a new league, unveiling a new nickname, debuting two new teams, hosting a national championship, and winning conference titles were all part of the remarkable success our athletic department experienced this year. Did I mention an incredible number of individual accomplishments as well?

Students. (pp. 17-22)

Every year they continue to amaze, overcome, and achieve. We’ve profiled several students throughout these pages and also featured them in our news. Much like our faculty members, I only wish we had space to profile more.

Alumni. (p. 23)

I’m not sure if our alumni realize how much pride we take in them. We consider their accomplishments and successes part of our own accomplishments and successes. We like to brag about them. They are the end result of all of our efforts, so we can’t help but want to stay in touch with them and maintain that lifelong relationship.

I hope you enjoy our Community Report. It’s been a pleasure putting it together and reflecting on our shared successes. We look forward to another great year for SUNY Canton and the North Country Community in 2008. Sincerely,

Joseph L. Kennedy President

Marescas Make $100,000 Challenge Dr. Michael Maresca and his wife Barbara of Potsdam committed to making a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish the Dr. Michael and Barbara Maresca Family Endowment for Nursing Education and challenged others to contribute as well. The Massena Memorial Hospital Foundation and Canton-Potsdam Hospital each gave $25,000 to the challenge. Numerous individual donors and other organizations have also contributed. “The generosity of the Maresca family is truly inspiring,” Dr. Kennedy said. “This donation and challenge will not only dramatically affect the quality of education we’re able to provide our nursing students, it will also have a long-term positive effect on the quality of healthcare throughout the North Country.” www.canton.edu

A Safe College Becomes Safer

The college recently implemented the State Emergency Management Office’s (SEMO) NY-Alert emergency notification program. “New York-Alert will allow us to quickly send out alert notifications to faculty, staff, and students,” said Kennedy. “By using a multiple and redundant notification system, we hope to inform everyone on campus in the event of an emergency.” College officials can send notifications via the Internet, which are then directed to each student’s email accounts, cell phones via both text and voice, and even to regular phones. “We want to reach students using the technology they already rely upon in their daily lives,” Kennedy said. All students, faculty members, and staff are encouraged to join in the NY-Alert program.

Three New, More Coming

The college added two new bachelor’s degree programs in 2007 and another in 2008. Several other four-year degrees are pending state approval. The addition of Dental Hygiene, Industrial Technology Management, and Graphic and Multimedia Design brought the total number of bachelor’s majors to 15. Within the next year, the college also expects to begin new four-year degrees in Applied Psychology, Nursing, Forensic Science Technology, Management Information Systems and Health Information Administration.

Revving It Up

The College hits a trio of racetracks this year by sponsoring the SUNY Canton Street Stock Series at Caprara’s Thunder Alley Speedpark in Evans Mills, Caprara’s Can-Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville, and the Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon for the 2008 racing season. “It will be a great opportunity for students in our Motorsports and Automotive programs to watch some of the best racing and crews from around the state,” said Michael J. Perry, Executive Director of the College Association, who worked with racing officials to set up the series. “It also links us with the racing circuit, which is like a North Country NASCAR. Foundation Families Honored

The 35th Anniversary Celebration of the SUNY Canton Foundation honored four families who have been instrumental in creating its success. “We cannot thank these four families and all of our donors enough for their continuing involvement in our college,” Dr. Kennedy said. “They have ensured success for many students and their donations will continue to be realized for generations to come.”

The Bagley Family of Madrid received the Model Alumni Award. The late Leon E. Bagley ’48 began a tradition of donating to the college along with his sister-in-law Alice Westaway Bagley. Their efforts have been continued by his wife, Rachael, son Timothy ’85, and grandson Alexander ’05. Tim is pictured with Tania and Scott Sterling ’86, his college roommate.

The Coakley Family

of Canton received the Community Leadership Award. Carol and Ronald Spadaccini, William and Carol Coakley, and Thomas and Nellie Coakley are well known for their civic pride, involvement in the community, and willingness to assist others.

The Fay Family of Canton received the Community Education Connection Award. The Fays have provided more than 100 years of combined educational service in the North Country: Accounting Professor Dan and Professor Emerita Linda Fay; Dean of the School of Business and Public Service Emeritus Ed Fay and his wife Patricia; Professor Emeritus Maurice and Sheila Fay Harrington, both of whom taught in the School of Business; and Director of Counseling Emeritus Harry and Peggy Fay Podgurski, a retired Edwards-Knox teacher. President Emeritus Dr. and Mrs. Earl W. MacArthur

President’s Report

Fourteen and Flying by President Joseph L. Kennedy Time flies.

While it’s hard for me to believe I’ve just completed my 14th year as President, it’s easy to look back at each individual year as a building block that has been integral in constructing our current foundation of success. I’ll remember this past year, the College’s 101st, as being synonymous with growth and impact. We progressed in so many ways and positively impacted so many students, families, and communities that it was perhaps the most rewarding of all the years since my arrival here in 1993. We experienced significant growth in critical areas such as enrollment, employment, fundraising, construction, and renovations, scholarships, and the development of new programs. As a result, the magnitude of our accomplishments has been substantial and, at times, spectacular.

Scholarship Luncheon

Second and Rising

Enrollment is often the end result of a number of interrelated efforts. For example, it’s easy for us to see how the increase in fundraising allows us to offer more scholarships and attract a larger number of students, but there are many other factors as well. Construction and renovation of facilities add to the appeal of the College. More academic programs, such as our expanded number of bachelor’s degrees, not only entice students to attend SUNY Canton, but they also enable them to stay for a longer period of time, four years instead of one or two.

8

2008 SUNY Canton Magazine

We could go on and on, but I’m sure you understand where I’m headed. It’s not just one of these factors bolstering our enrollment growth; it’s the collective sum. Our Fall 2007 enrollment was the College’s highest in 32 years and the second highest in school history, topped only by its 1975-76 headcount highpoint. The 2,776 students enrolled marked an increase of more than 150 students from last year, more than 250 students from two years ago, and more than 300 students from five years ago. Summerterm and Winterterm continue to record explosive enrollment growth. This past summer saw nearly double the number of students we experienced from just two years ago, and it was more than a 50 percent increase from just last year. Our completely online Winterterm grew to more than 360 students this year, which is a 10 percent jump from 2006-07 and more than a 100 percent rise from 2005-06. We’re obviously heading in the right direction. Although it’s still very early in the process, applications and interest have been very strong thus far for next year. It’s estimated that every 100 students add an additional $250,000 annually to the local economy, so SUNY Canton’s efforts are obviously paying dividends for not just the College, but the entire North Country community as well. We’re quickly moving in on our goal to reach 3,000 students within the next few years.

We Can Do More

As the costs of attending college continue to increase, the importance of fundraising and scholarships has never been greater. As successful as we’ve been, we can, and need to, do more. Students were awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships this year, setting a record in total amount awarded and number of awards. Almost 300 students were recipients of SUNY Canton Foundation scholarships, enabling them to attend college when they might otherwise not have had the financial ability to do so. This may be unfamiliar to many of our older alumni whose tuition was largely or wholly paid for by the state, but the reality is we now need your support more than ever before, since the state pays less than 30 percent of student cost. More students translate into more need. We want to make sure that qualified students with bright futures are able to attend our college and transform their lives as so many of our alumni before them have already done. The growth of our Foundation has been fantastic. Foundation assets have surpassed $14 million for the first time in college history with an increase of nearly $4 million last year alone. That’s a result of the extraordinary generosity of alumni, profeswww.canton.edu

President’s Report Technology Management major provides a springboard for management and leadership careers, particularly for associate degree graduates from the Canino School of Engineering Technology, and the Dental Hygiene curriculum builds from our successful two-year program in that field. The final two years of the Dental Hygiene bachelor’s degree is offered completely online, allowing parents and working professionals the flexibility to excel. We anticipate adding as many as half a dozen new four-year programs over the next year. The bachelor’s degrees are an important part of our success as we grow our enrollment. It is helping us to attract new students, retain current students, and establish a ladder curriculum that few other colleges have the luxury of offering.

Rumble with Trumble

One of the many people who will be responsible for ushering in our new majors and ensuring the success of our current programs will be the College’s new Provost, Dr. William R. Trumble. (see page 6.) He replaces Dr. Jeremy D. Brown who this fall was selected as the new president at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Trumble comes to us from the University of New Hampshire where he was both a professor and a dean. We wish Dr. Brown the best in his new position. His positive impact on SUNY Canton was highlighted with the addition of numerous bachelor’s degrees, the continued exponential growth of SUNY Canton OnLine (OL), and the remarkable expansion of our worldwide efforts known as Planet Canton.

grows in importance every day.

Students Make Professors Excel

Who came first: the great professor or the great student? We’d like to think both here at SUNY Canton. Either way, the achievements of one group reflect well on the other. Some of the fantastic student accomplishments recognized over the past year include: Students in our Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Veterinary Science Technology programs recorded 100 percent pass rates on all of their respective national exams. Several Air Conditioning Engineering Technology students won national awards and scholarships. Business Administration major Karl Ortmeyer ’07 of Potsdam won a national leadership award through the National Republican Campaign Committee’s Business Advisory Council. Students in Nursing, Criminal Justice, Electrical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology are all among those being heavily recruited by employers at least six months prior to their graduation. The Steel Bridge Team captured first place in the Upstate New York regional competition for the 11th time in 14 years and finished 7th overall in the nation.

Planet Canton

Yes, we are spanning the globe. Perhaps even more than most people realize. Did you know that SUNY Canton had over 100 Bosnian students enrolled in classes this fall? Did you know that there are a half dozen Russian students slated to graduate with bachelor’s degrees this spring? A growing number of students are also enrolled from Japan and Ukraine. Interim Provost Pauline A. Graveline and SUNY Canton OL Director Molly Mott are among those who have travelled extensively to establish and lead these worldwide efforts. The College’s first Summer Program for International Students brought 11 students and one faculty member from Moscow State University. The program will be expanded to include all of our Planet Canton partners next summer and could bring as many as 200 foreign students to campus. International partnerships have been expanded to include AUBiH in Bosnia, Kazan State Power Engineering University in Tatarstan, Institute of Public Administration in Moscow, and Yalta University of Management. These are indispensable relationships that will challenge our students and faculty to think and interact globally, an ability that

How Students Communicate

It’s abundantly obvious that today’s students communicate with each other in remarkably different ways than their parents did at the same age. Things like text messaging, blogs, internet social networks like MySpace, e-mail, YouTube, and iPods weren’t prevalent or didn’t even exist 20 years ago. (Don’t you remember 8-track players and 45’s?) The ever-changing technology of today’s world makes it exciting www.canton.edu

President’s Report The contest was a great deal of fun and yielded numerous entries that captured the essence of college life from a student’s perspective.

Big Jumps

as well as challenging to keep up with students’ habits and preferences. It’s been ten years since the College offered its first online course. Back then, many wondered if it could be done effectively. Now, it’s a common practice throughout higher education and an essential part of learning methodology. SUNY Canton OL continues to grow in both the number of classes offered and the number of students enrolled. It’s been a vital part of the school’s global growth as well as an important educational delivery method for professionals and parents who might not otherwise be able to further their education. This spring SUNY Canton OL will be offering nearly 100 classes online. Additionally, we’ve unveiled a new design for the College’s website and will be integrating more video and interactive features, including videos created by students in our recent RooTube contest.

Another area that saw an incredible transformation over the past year was athletics. In addition to the new construction for five of our six outdoor sports teams (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, and baseball), the athletic department also recorded achievements both on and off the playing fields, including three fall sports conference championships. For more about the Kangaroos’ accomplishments this year, check out pages 14 and 15 in this publication. Congratulations to all of those involved on a remarkable year, especially considering our challenges with the inability to use Dana Hall this fall. We are all excited and anxiously awaiting the construction of our new convocation and athletic facility.

Year 101

In summation, the College’s 101st year has been extraordinarily productive and fulfilling. We have a clear vision ahead of us and we’re working diligently as a collective unit to achieve beyond expectations. I’m proud of the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members. We have set ourselves up for another spectacular year over the next twelve months. I look forward to presiding over the 100th graduating class this spring and witnessing even more individual triumphs and community successes.

A Grand Reunion!

The SUNY Canton Alumni Association extends a warm invitation to Alumni Weekend, June 13-15, with special gatherings for graduates of:

One looked up at me and said, “No thank you, can I have a plain piece of paper?” I asked the child, “Why do you want a plain white sheet of paper?” He replied, “Because, I like to color in my own lines.” From that point on, I stopped being so concerned with the product and focused on the process. Earliest Career Interest: I wanted to be a rock star! The Book About My Life Would Be Called: A best seller

Susan Buckley Visiting Instructor, Criminal Investigation M.Ed. SUNY Potsdam Hometown: Dannemora, New York Television: 24, Grey’s Anatomy, Survivor I was Hooked On Law Enforcement When… I got my first confession from a suspect. Achievements: Promotion to senior investigator in the New York State Police and managing a field unit of BCI investigators.

Lawretta Ononye Assistant Professor, Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems Ph.D. University of Tennessee

Michael J. Newtown, P.E. ’84 Assistant Professor and Department Chair, Energy and Environment M.S. Clarkson University

Hometown: Nigeria, Africa Teaching Style: My teaching style is based on two essential components: motivate students and guide them to learn. I organize and present the material in a way that makes it easily absorbed and interesting to the students. My teaching style combines the use of visual presentation, demonstration, and interactive activity.

Hometown: Ogdensburg, New York Favorite Gadget: Wind velocity meter and Psychrometer Top Achievement: Winning and participating with Dr. Arthur Hurlbut ’65 in a $250,000 grant. Teaching Style: I like to show hands-on stuff that relates the equations and theory. The Book About My Life Would Be Called: The Green Engineer Top Achievement: Winning a $250,000 grant with Dr. Arthur Hurlbut ’65.

Daniel Gagliardi Assistant Professor of Mathematics Ph.D., North Carolina State University Hometown: Ossining, New York Teaching Style: I think of myself more as a coach than a lecturer, so my classes are kind of like a workout. It is fun and rewarding to see my students engaged in the learning process. I like to show them how much fun (and useful) math is in the hopes of igniting their interest in the subject. Philosophy: Try to make decisions you will not regret.
