t is truly an exciting time at SUNY Canton. As you’ll see throughout this report, new degree offerings, facilities and partnerships have been the highlights of the year. As the College continues to evolve and expand, our reputation for an exceptional academic environment that is focused on student success remains as strong as ever. Our career-driven majors are specifically designed to give students the best possible chance of landing a job after graduation. To that end, we have a renewed enthusiasm in our science-, math- and technology-based curricula, and our students are learning the necessary skills that are currently in high demand. SUNY Canton was ranked among the Top Regional Colleges (North) and was listed in the 2013 edition of “Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. NEWEST ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology program began in Fall 2012 to address a growing need – both locally and nationwide – for trained personnel to serve in human servicesrelated fields. Employment in health and human services careers are projected to grow faster than the average. Area agencies, including St. Lawrence NYSARC, are already anticipating qualified graduates of the program to address the growing need. The new Homeland Security Bachelor of Technology degree is an extension of the successful Criminal Justice and Criminal Investigation programs. Students will learn how to protect people, property and infrastructures, according to faculty. Local, state and federal career opportunities exist for graduates from the newest major.

CAMPUS UPDATE

NEW PARTNERSHIPS SUNY Canton embarked upon a unique partnership with Subaru Distributors Corporation last year. Subaru and area dealers will be contributing approximately $500,000 in equipment and brand-new cars to the College to assist automotive technology students in becoming certified to work with Subaru. Additionally, Subaru dealers in New York can send their technicians for training at SUNY Canton. The partnership was formed when Brandon J. Baldwin, an Automotive Technology Assistant Professor, was introduced to Barry A. Wells, Executive Vice President of Subaru Distributors Corp. Wells graduated from SUNY Canton in 1975 and earned a four-year degree in Legal Studies from the College in 2010.

NEWLY ACCREDITED

The Funeral Services Administration program recently received its initial accreditation from the American Board of Funeral Service Education. The program is one of the very few four-year mortuary science majors in the United States and one of the only programs of its kind within the SUNY System. The program is designed for first-time first-year students and working professionals who wish to continue their education while working.

John L. Halford, Sr. '49 recently created an endowed scholarship to support students in the four-year nursing program. Professor Emerita Margaret Vining became the first participant in our Gift Annuity Program. Gift Annuities are a wonderful way to make a donation to the college and receive a lifetime income. Fred C. '66 and Karen Liebi recently added to their endowed scholarship which supports students majoring in construction technology and other curricula in the Canino School of Engineering Technology. Robert C. '60 and Margaret Rogers made an addition contribution to the endowment they established in honor of longtime basketball coach Stan Cohen. Thomas P. '66 and Claire Woodside continue supporting the Woodside Family Endowment which was established in 1991 with a generous gift.

COLLEGE BEFORE COLLEGE

The new site makes it easier and faster for anyone with a webcapable cell phone to access information about academics, admissions, athletics and directions to the College.

BETTER BRIDGES

Responding to the increase in mobile web traffic, SUNY Canton has developed a website specifically for the modern smartphone user.

MORE COMMUNITY EVENTS

With the addition of several new buildings, including the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House, the College has been able to expand its community programming offerings including new fitness programs such as Zumba, spinning and open ice skating sessions. The building’s staff has also partnered with area businesses to offer special events, such as Glow Skincare, the Spa Fitness challenge, and “Discover SCUBA” nights. Faculty implemented the Early College High School program through a $200,000 grant from the New York State Department of Education. Teachers from participating high schools offer college-level instruction combined with exploratory learning at the College.

This year SUNY Canton’s footbridges received a major facelift for the first time since they were built in the late 1960s. The replacement of the footbridges was one of several construction projects underway at SUNY Canton this past year. The two footbridges, which connect the SUNY Canton campus to the downtown Village of Canton, have served as an identifiable landmark specific to the area. They inspire fond memories for many alumni.

BEST-SELLING AUTHORS ON CAMPUS Assistant Professor Philip K. LaMarche is introducing his students to best-selling and popular authors - first hand and in person. The Spring 2013 Living Writers Series began with a visit from William C. Rhoden, a New York Times sports columnist and an ESPN contributor. The Series was partially sponsored by the SUNY Canton College Foundation. Rhoden, author of “Forty Million Dollar Slaves,” said he wrote the book to inspire hope about the future of modern sports, among other reasons. “Who are today’s heroes?” Rhoden asked the audience of about 400 guests. “A hero is someone who’s got a lot to lose and stands for his principles.” Pictured above are LaMarche (left) and Rhoden (right).

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR STUDIES HIGH-SCHOOLERS A study published in the August 2012 edition of English Leadership Quarterly by SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Eunjyu Yu reveals that high school students enjoy being challenged by their English teachers and welcome the opportunity to explore a variety of writing techniques and read a wide range of literature.

INVESTIGATING THE ‘SCENE OF THE CRIME’ A new textbook written by SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Elizabeth A. Erickson takes students through a mock crime scene investigation and gives them the tools they need to solve a homicide based on forensic evidence. Erickson says the concept for the book, titled “Criminalistics Laboratory Manual: The Basics of Forensic Investigation,” was based on the questions that many of the students in her Introduction to Forensic Investigation course had. “They were interested in how the crime scene evidence was gathered, used in the trial, and how it all tied together,” she said.

SUNY CANTON PROFESSORS’ RESEARCH WINS AWARD A research paper written by SUNY Canton’s Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Brian K. Harte, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Finance Umesh Kumar was awarded “Best Paper in [the] Financial Economics Session” at the Academy of Business Research Fall International Conference in Atlantic City, N.J. Their paper, titled “The Regulation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Investor Response,” which analyzes investors’ response to firms that were convicted under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977, was presented at the September 2012 conference. www.canton.edu

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND Kids from across New York State once again put their summer vacations to good use by attending SUNY Canton’s second annual Camp Invention, a program of Invent Now. Students in grades one through six attended the two-week-long camp, which helps cultivate ideas in science, technology, engineering and math through innovative projects and collaborative hands-on activities.

This year’s Camp Invention will be held from July 22 to July 26 and July 29 to Aug. 2. To find out how to sign up, visit www. campinvention.org.

“Camp Invention really makes students think and engages their creativity,” said Ronald Tavernier, SUNY Canton Biology Instructor and camp organizer. “From an educator’s standpoint, I see it as a way to make learning science fun.”

ROLLING INTO ROOS HOUSE Auto enthusiasts are revving up their unique, classic, new and custom motor vehicles for SUNY Canton’s second annual Automotive Regional Car Show Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Roos House. Event organizer and SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Brandon J. Baldwin said the event is one of the only indoor car shows in the area and is open to the public. The College continued its awesome concert lineup with a triple-band performance this fall. The Student Government Association and AMP Entertainment collaborated to bring nationally known rockers Buckcherry and Lit along with local favorites Tyrade to Dana Hall. STUDENTS GIVE TIME, MONEY AND MORE SUNY Canton’s students pay it forward with donations and services.

• The Brother 2 Brother student club raised $2,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network through a Cold Stone Creamery ice cream fundraiser.

SRI LANKAN STUDENTS JOIN PTA PROGRAM International students are bringing a new dynamic and culture to the College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program. The College collaborates with the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) in Sri Lanka to bring students to SUNY Canton as part of a dual-degree program. So far, six students have made the 8,600-mile journey to participate in the unique arrangement. More are expected to enroll in Fall 2013. Professor Deborah Molnar said, “They are all very well prepared academically and have been sharing their extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology with their classmates.”

• The College’s Greek organizations take weekly shifts helping out at the Grace Episcopal Church’s Friday Soup Kitchen meal. • The Kappa Xi Omega sorority sponsored the spring American Red Cross blood drive at the College. • The Veteran’s Association donated more than 170 pounds of food to the Canton Church and Community Program Food Pantry. • The Student Government Association coordinated a Sandy relief dance with SUNY Potsdam and raised $1,291 for the American Red Cross.

The students’ transition included adopting a completely different lifestyle, adapting to a new climate and completely different cuisine. They had never seen snow before they moved to Canton. “The people at SUNY Canton and in the community have been the nicest we’ve ever met,” said Supun Buddhi Fernando '14.

GREAT-GRANDMOTHER EARNS DEGREE WITH GREATGRANDCHILDREN An 83-year-old has proven that age should never be a hindrance to higher education. Myrtle A. Butterfield '12 of Canton is taking courses alongside her two great-grandchildren, 65 years after graduating from high school. I went to the Office of Admissions with my granddaughter-in-law,” Myrtle recalled. “I met (Admissions Counselor) Brandon Davock and when I walked out, I was enrolled in the Liberal Arts program. I watched both of my great-grandchildren grow up, and now I get to go to College with them.” Her great-grandson, Carter K. Cutway, was a Business Management student during the Spring 2012 Semester, and Myrtle’s great-granddaughter, Jamie L. Butterfield, is in the Criminal Justice program. “Who else can say they went to College with their great-grandmother?” Cutway said. Before graduating in December 2012, Myrtle has developed a new love of learning. She’s been on the President’s List, inducted into two honor societies, and her GPA was in the top 10 percent of her class. “I’ve always regretted not coming to college, but work and family always came first. I tell all of the students here not to waste this opportunity,” Myrtle said.

ATHLETICS

News SUNY Canton student-athletes continued to excel during an important year for the Athletic Department. The College is in the midst of its first NCAA Division III provisional year and is competing against colleges in the NCAA and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). In about two years, Athletics has grown from nine teams and less than 150 athletes to 14 teams and nearly 300 student-athletes.

Tied for eighth place at the 2012 USCAA national championship. The Roos captured the Lou Jarvis Memorial Tournament at Johnson State College for the first team win in school history.

Khalid L. Vaughn '14 (below) earned alltournament honors at the 2012 Mount Saint Vincent Tournament and the 2012 SUNY Brockport Holiday Invitational.

Placed fifth in the 2012 USCAA national championship in Lake Placid for the second straight year. Justin A. Richardson '13 (left) capped off a stellar career by finishing fifth at nationals and was named a USCAA AllAmerican.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The Men’s Hockey Team has risen to play an NCAA Division III schedule for the first time in school history. The Roos have beaten four Division II opponents this season.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

This is the inaugural season for Women’s Hockey. The Roos beat the University at Buffalo in November for the program’s first-ever win.

The Roos earned the College’s first-ever berth in the ECAC Upstate Championship.

Goalie Laura Pratt '15 was named a USCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

Kaitlin E. Myers '13 surpassed the 1,000 point career mark. Head Coach Bruce C. Tallon won his 100th game at SUNY Canton when the Roos beat SUNY Cobleskill Nov. 27.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Finished ninth at the 2012 USCAA national championship in Lake Placid.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Captured the third seed and advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 USCAA national championship held at Roos House and finished with an incredible 25-4 overall record. Three players were named USCAA All-Americans. MacKenzie P.
