GET ON YOUR BIKE FOR CHARITY T Keep your diary free on May 29 for this brilliant family fun day
May 2016
The Riders in the Sky charity was set up in 2011 in memory of Lee Baker, a biker who was sadly killed on the road in November 2010. His friends and fellow bikers decided to continue the great work he did for charity, and have so far raised over £45,000 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
BASIS 05
THE
he Riders in the Sky Day is back for 2016, and bigger than ever. The family fun day is on Sunday, May 29 at the Tor Leisure club and kicks off at midday through until 9pm. If you want to take part in the 70-mile bike ride though then you’ll need to be at the Tor Leisure club at 10am. After only a few short years, the event has become a regular for many people in the area, as the day is packed with displays, competitions, great food and local traders. Music is also a big part of the day, and this year the organisers have added an acoustic stage, with acts including The Hammervilles, Chloë Warren Music, Kevin and The Destroyers, Eve Lesedi and Missy Edwards and Friends.

RED BRICK BUILDING LAUNCHES FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN Crowdfunding campaign to continue the creative development of the historic Morlands site
T
he Red Brick Building Centre has been awarded a £248,000 grant from the Power To Change Big Lottery Fund, on the provision that the project can match-fund the amount, to address the urgently required works to the derelict adjacent building known as Building C. The Red Brick Building’s board of directors and a newly formed steering committee have been developing a business plan for the larger space to include further community works spaces and hubs. A crowd-funding campaign has recently been launched to raise £75,000. The Red Brick Building are hoping to attract new shareholders to the Community Benefit Society and donations to help the project to urgently raise the match-funding required to qualify for the Lottery Fund. So to find out more about becoming a shareholder – with shares available
in multiples of 100 to a maximum of £20,000 – visit the project’s website: www.redbrickglastonbury. co.uk. And to donate to the project and get involved visit: www.spacehive.com/red-brick-building.

Nick Parker and Saoirse Casey come to Glastonbury as part of their UK tour
O
n Wednesday May 11, singer-songwriters Saoirse Casey and Nick Parker will be performing at The Hawthorns in Glastonbury as part of their UK tour. Saoirse Casey is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Kildare, Ireland – her father is singer-songwriter Paddy Casey – who is working towards her debut album An Infant Star Collapses, which will be released later this year. Only slightly longer in the tooth is Street-based Nick Parker. Nick has spent the last 25 years touring Europe with or without his various bands and is currently working on his third solo album. Joining them on the night is Glastonbury’s own Steve Henderson (see page 21 for more on Steve). The gig starts at 8.30pm and entry is by donation (£3-£5 suggested price).

THE
UNMISSABLE GIG AT HAWTHORNS
Wow, it’s my first month back at The Basis and there are so many incredible artists to talk about I don’t even know where to start. This Summer is set to be busy for our local talents including Godney Gathering, Farm Fest and Priddy Folk Festival among other crazy events. I am keeping my eye on a few bands these coming months, one of which being Kevin and The Destroyers, who will be playing at Wells May Day Fair on May 2 and Riders in the Sky (our cover story this month) on May 29. They’ll be playing a mixture of jazz, indie and pop rock – essentially they will rock your world whatever type of music you are into. I was excited to learn recently local lads (In Brackets) have reformed and are on the lookout for performing opportunities. I have watched them a few times over the years and it was a massive shame they took a break but I am incredibly glad they are back. Their original music is brilliant, so hopefully they will be showing us all their credentials soon. I also hear a new festival is en route to us towards the winter time. ‘We Shall Overcome’ is part of an austerity campaign across the nation and Glastonbury are keen to get involved. Watch this space for more info!

JAZZ SESSIONS RETURNING TO WESSEX HOTEL Oomph and Lift’s Elaine Buckley bringing the jazz back to Street
T
hose with a passion for jazz music that have been missing the regular sessions that ran at the Wessex Hotel, Street, will be delighted to hear that they’re coming back from this month. Starting with Kevin Grenfell’s Jazz Giants on Sunday May 8 (as well as his very special guest, Pete Allen), the sessions are being organised by Elaine Buckley, who’s well-known to the people of Street at the proprietor of the Oomph and Lift lingerie shop on Vestry Road. “My Dad ran a jazz club in the 1950’s so I was
brought up with jazz and would dance around as a toddler and I still love to dance now,” says Elaine. “I have been a steward at the Wessex Hotel jazz weekends for over six years, so when the opportunity arose to resurrect monthly Sunday evening sessions I jumped at the chance to get involved. “I have some great bands in the pipeline, so if you enjoy jazz then come along and join in!”

Tunes triumph at your local radio station where they say GFM means Great For Music. “We are proud to play and support all sorts,” said the station’s Ian Liversidge. Regular programmes feature rock, pop, country, blues, classical and world music, with weekly looks back at the chart hits from years gone by. And when GFM is not broadcasting live there is a constant flow of tracks 24/7 from a playlist of thousands ensuring there is plenty of variety and little repetition, and four hours a week of locally produced music. Ian is particularly keen to support the local music scene and every week gives local performers the chance to play on his Thursday Live show from 7-9pm and repeated on Sundays 2-4pm. They can range from teenage wannabes to the mighty Reef. This February he’s also launched Glastonbury Calling, where four venues across the town stage gigs from noon till late, and is set to become an annual event. Michael Eavis has also been on the station to give listeners inside stories about the Glastonbury Festival. To see GFM’s programme schedule go to glastonburyfm.co.uk, and to ask for publicity about an upcoming gig or music release, email admin@ glastonburyfm. co.uk.

SNAP HAPPY!
Local photographer Neil Bremner talks to Geoff Harris about his thriving business and recent successes in national competitions and awards How long has your portrait photography business been based in Glastonbury? I opened Made Portraits in January 2013. Prior to that I had worked for a couple of photography studios across the country so setting up my own in Somerset wasn’t too much of a stretch. Saying that, I was still incredibly nervous as I knew establishing myself was going to take time. Tell us about the awards you have won recently. I have won some fantastic awards, but the ones that stand out have included being a finalist for Children and Family Photographer of the year last year; a finalist for advertising photographer of the year; and this February I was delighted to win a Gold Award from the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP) in their Children Category for my image of Ella (the girl in glasses). The SWPP award sounds a big deal… Each year I offer a new style of photography package to clients, as I love to challenge myself creatively. This year, I decided I wanted to start offering ‘Fine Art Kids
BASIS
THE
12
Portraits’. This style is the opposite of what I normally do. Normally my work is very bright, interactive and fun, but with fine art photography you want the images to pretty much be the opposite of that. Ella was one of the first images I did in the fine-art style, and to see it win a Gold Award really did confirm that I was on the right path. What I love about fine-art portraits is that they are simply about the child. Kids have perfect skin and these images really capture that. What difference will these awards make? The competitions really push me to try new things as I strive to achieve more. Take Ella again. Because the lighting and the finish had to be perfect, it took a lot more time to get the finished image and judges recognised that. Steve’s own musical tastes come from growing up in the 70s and listening to some classic and timeless rock while he was playing in bands. Obvious names like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and T-Rex go hand-in-hand with later influences that have more relevance to the music he plays today, which include Billy Bragg, Elliot Smith, Frank Turner and Elvis Costello. If you want to see Steve playing live (or fancy having a go onstage yourself), get along to the Hawthorns on a Tuesday night. We promise that you won’t be disappointed. Steve is also heavily involved in the Glastonbury Fringe Festival, which will be held in the town from the 16th-27th June. Check out next month’s issue to find out more about the Fringe and how you can get involved.

S
teve moved to Glastonbury in 1971 when we was 12. Growing up he played in plenty of local bands but it was when he took over the butchers shop in Market Place in 2003 that he decided to hang up his guitar and focus on the business. And that’s how Steve’s musical journey might have ended, were it not for one fateful day when he bumped into Nick Parker, who was hosting the Open Mic night in Glastonbury, which was then held at The Market House. “I was delivering meat to the pub when I met Nick setting up the Open Mic,” says Steve. “He suggested that I should come along and play, so the next week I went back and got up on stage for the first time in years. That was what rekindled my love of music.” Steve took over the running of the Open Mic night in 2011 and then moved it to the Hawthorns pub. “I’ve made loads of friends,” he says, “and we encourage young people to get up and have a go. Everyone’s very positive. When people first turn up they’re really nervous but now they’re belting it out. We all understand how nerveracking it is at the start, so we try to make everyone who comes along feel comfortable and supported from the start.” The Open Mic has gone from strength to strength. When it began, each act could do three songs and would often get to play a couple of times, but now there are so many people wanting to get up and have a go that each act only has time to play a couple of tracks.

A Trip to Ponter’s Ball Discovering the ancient man-made bank
T
o begin, park at the far end of Bretenoux Road (alongside Glastonbury’s Redlands Estate). From Chalice Way, go through the railings into Cinnamon Lane and walk to Lower Edgarly Farm on the right-hand side after the T junction. The road bends left and the first stile, the start of our footpath, is on this corner; proceed to and through the Millfield Prep School campus. After passing the static caravans, follow the hedge until you come to a wooden bridge on your left; cross this and the orchard, turning right at the car park. Leaving the Millfield grounds, walk straight ahead, and then turn right onto the farm track; our path continues to the left beyond the hedge. At the next field, head for the opposite corner, joining another farm track; when this track turns sharp left, the footpath goes straight on. At this point the path forks: one track is fairly obvious, following the hedge on the left, but we need to fork right, heading diagonally across the field. As you reach the top of the rise, you will see the next stile in front of you. Climbing this stile brings you onto the ancient man-made earth bank known as Ponter’s Ball. Nobody seems to know for sure what this is, or when it was made, but I like the suggestion that it formed part of a 3rd Century BC Celtic Sanctuary. Mythologically, it is the horn of

Capricorn in the legendary Glastonbury Zodiac. Moving on, the next stile takes you across a wooden bridge which goes over the dyke alongside the earthwork. From here, proceed to the metal gate in the far right corner of the field, and follow the line of similar metal gates to eventually join Kennard Moor Drove; turn right and follow the lane. The River Brue will become visible on your left; where the road turns away from the river there used to be a footbridge. You would sometimes see a pike lying in wait here where Coxbridge Brook joins the main river. Continue up the lane and over the stone bridge. One could simply rejoin Cinnamon Lane, or cross the field to the left; the footpath emerges back in Chalice Way.

It’s clear that it won’t be long until he is headlining shows and festivals, and we can’t wait to watch this moment. Did I mention he writes his own music? Yes I know, impressive. In the meantime you can have the distinct pleasure of his musical talents at various venues and open mic nights across Somerset. Georgie Robbins
