WELCOME! SEPTEMBER 2016 #124

I

t’s been a great month for sport, and Great Britain has performed amazingly in the Rio Olympics. A significant factor in our success has been an increase in funding over the past decade or so through organisations such as the Lottery. While that’s encouraging to hear, it’s clear that at the grass roots level there’s still quite a lot that needs to be done. Thankfully there are people like Alan Gloak and the TS5C charity, that do so much to help young people in Somerset to fund their sport and, in some cases, represent their country in the Olympics. You can find out more about Alan and the brilliant work he does on page 24, as he’s this month’s Local Hero. Enjoy the mag and see you again next month. Dean Mortlock, Editor

SALVATION ARMY CONCERT

T

he Salvation Army are holding a fundraising concert featuring the Wells City Band on Saturday 10 September at their hall in Street. The concert starts at 5pm and tickets cost just £5.

No one heard Alan Philpott’s first radio shows, but he was only 10 years old and broadcasting a breakfast show from his bedroom with no radio equipment before going to school. However, by 16 he was building an audience with Bristol hospital radio, then presenting a soul and Motown music show for University Radio Hull. “Careers followed in teaching and accountancy,” said Alan, “until I noticed the GFM banner on the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury. I had a chat with the studio manager and now have been presenting my classical music show on GFM for almost three years. “I like to play old favourites and less obvious music which listeners may not have heard.” With his experience at GFM, Alan was able to create a demo programme which he sent to Radio Bristol. This led to paid work for Inrix, which provides travel reports for the local BBC and commercial radio stations. He has also covered shifts for Wessex FM, Smooth Radio and Radio Solent. “GFM has proved a valuable next step on the broadcasting ladder,” said Alan, “and I have been able to network with many broadcast journalists at BBC Bristol, including household names from Points West. His GFM Classics show broadcasts on Mondays 9-10pm and is repeated on Wednesdays 3-4pm.

Who can believe the summer is over already? Although, did it really start? Well, the festival season may be coming to a close but that doesn’t mean the fun ends there! Coming up this Autumn you can catch Beans On Toast at The Bocabar on 21 October. For those who were hoping to watch him at The Godney Gathering, this is your chance to check out what you missed. You are guaranteed the comedy, as well as a bit of folk musings here and there. There is excitement in the air over at camp Chloë Warren. She has been teasing studio time recently, which is great news from one of Somerset’s rising stars. Many will recognise Chloe from various events across the South West, including Rock Against Cancer at the Victoria Field Social Club and Livestock Fest. She is a girl on the move, so keep your eyes peeled for this one. She is definitely a talent worth listening to. Also do me a favour and download any of Bob Gallie’s songs. He is an absolute delight for the ears and an all-round awesome guy, too. Head over to his Facebook page at www. facebook.com/bobgalliemusic for more info and to hear some of his music. HOW ANDREW CONQUERED THE WEST END

I

t’s not often that you get to meet someone who’s really ‘made it’ – someone who has succeeded, by their own efforts and talent, to fulfil their dreams and ambitions and become one of the most highly regarded and influential people in their field. Growing up in Street in the 1970s and 80s in a family of theatre fans, Andrew Wright dreamt of nothing but the West End stage. Amateur shows were followed by professional training in London and a career as a dancer, and now as one of the UK’s leading choreographers. His success story is fantastic – West End shows including Guys and Dolls, Half a Sixpence and Mrs Henderson Presents showcase his original, witty and hugely energetic style that has earned him critical and popular acclaim, and Olivier Award nominations. On Saturday 10 September you can meet this extraordinary ‘local boy made good’ when Andrew

Wright returns to his home stage, Strode Theatre in Street, with his illustrated talk A Dancer’s Journey to the West End, supported by a young cast from the South West School of Dance. Tickets for this fascinating and entertaining evening are just £10, and available from the Strode Theatre Box Office on 01458 442846 or at www.strodetheatre.org.uk.

STRODE THEATRE’S NEW SEASON

S

trode Theatre has a new brochure out for September to December, and it’s a bumper one! With a new, bigger format, the new season features big-name personalities like radio DJ Johnnie Walker, West End choreographer Andrew Wright, Mary Berry and Michael Portillo; hugely talented local performers like Street Theatre Company, the Mid-Somerset Orchestra and Glastonbury & Street Musical Comedy Society. There’s also a full cinema programme with movies like Absolutely Fabulous, The BFG, Ghostbusters, Elvis & Nixon and Finding Dory, as well as stunning live broadcasts from the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and many others. If you’ve never visited your local theatre, now’s the time to take a look at their brochure, or the website, and enjoy this lovely facility!

lastonbury Galleries are hosting an ingenious new show, which starts this month and runs until 1 October. The Anonymous Art Show features a range of work on paper or textile that are just 10cm square, and from around 100 varied artists. Each canvas will cost just £40. In total there will be over 200 pictures, which include original works, prints, photographs, etchings and textiles by artists such as Anne and Nancy Farmer, Chris Fry, Norman Parker, Faye Hutchcroft, Jennie Thomas and Kev Pearson. The identity of the artist will then be revealed to the buyer after its been purchased. Ruth Morland from Glastonbury Galleries said: “I hope the public will enjoy the thrill of finding themselves a piece of artwork from a known artist, or perhaps discover a new favourite.”

LOCAL ARTIST JOINS OPEN STUDIOS

H

aving enjoyed participating in Somerset Open Studios two years ago, Jackie Henderson is again ready to open her studio and welcome the general public to view her latest exhibition. “It’s wonderful to be part of this event that traverses Somerset and allows artists to showcase their work and share their working methods,” says Jackie. “My paintings portray the Somerset countryside that is so much a part of who I am. I’m of the generation that, as a child, was allowed to wander free to play in woods and fields. This connection to nature never leaves you and also never fails to inspire me to paint. “My exhibition will include paintings of the atmospheric levels and moors, country lanes throughout the changing seasons and the majestic Glastonbury Tor. There will also be more intricate studies of our native flora, and British birds’ eggs. Prints and greeting cards will also be available.

“For anyone that’s interested in watercolour painting, I will be running a series of workshops in 2017 that are aimed at the complete beginner or those wishing to progress a little further with their painting. The emphasis will be to learn in a relaxed environment and to have fun, too. There will be a leaflet available at my venue during the course of Somerset Open Studios, with dates and times of the individual workshops. On request it will be possible to send the workshop details by email or by post. Please ring 07896 104405 if you have any queries.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUNWAY!

T

his October, Runway are celebrating 10 years of trading in Street. The shop, which can be found on the corner of High Street and Farm Road, was set up by the mother/daughter team of Marion and Natalie – who have over 30 years of fashion retail experience between them – and stocks a fantastic range of clothing that’s stylish, affordable and fun. Anyone who’s yet to step through their door is in for a treat, and they’re guaranteed a friendly welcome and a limitless supply of top shopping advice! To celebrate their anniversary, Runway are holding one of their hugely popular charity fashion shows at the Bocabar on the 15th of October. Runway host two of these charity events every year, and the models are all customers of the shop and range from 14-70! It’s a great night out, with plenty of stunning outfits to buy and some excellent live music, too. Tickets are

just £7, or £4 if you want to just come in for the music. All money from the night goes directly to local charities, and the girls have already raised over £2,500 for local charities. Tickets can be picked up from the shop itself or the Bocabar, and we advise you to be quick about it as the shows usually sell out fast! If that wasn’t enough to keep them busy 24/7, Marion and Natalie are proud to announce that they’re in the process of opening up a second shop in Wells – and we’ll bring you more news on that next month.

LOCAL HERO

ALAN GLOAK

We talk to Glastonbury resident, Alan Gloak, founder and chairman of Somerset sports charity TS5C – and much more besides

A

t the age of 74, Alan could run circles around people half his age, and his favourite saying – “pas de problem” – aptly describes his positive outlook on life. Arriving in Glastonbury in 1992, he threw himself into local politics. He was Mayor of Glastonbury from 2002-2003, Chairman of Somerset County Council from 2005-2009 and is still a Glastonbury County Councillor. In 2010 he received an MBE for services to the County Council. His desire to make things happen extends way beyond politics, though. He was instrumental in bringing the first farmers market in Somerset to Glastonbury; he was chairman of Mendip Community Transport, overseeing growth from two to 22 buses over the last 12 years, and is a director of the Red Brick Building, among others. But it is his sports charity, TS5C, which takes up most of his time now. It provides grants for young able and disabled Somerset-based athletes wishing to compete at the top levels. “There are so many costs involved,” says Alan. “Travel expenditure, equipment, competition entrance fees – the list goes on. TS5C helps these young athletes reach their potential.” Since 2007, the charity has supported over 120 athletes, providing funds in excess of £165,000. And it has paid off, with TS5C swimmer Cameron Kurle representing Team GB at this year’s Olympics, and others with Tokyo 2020 in their sights! TS5C also set up and funds Wheelchair Basketball Clubs around the county, including one at Strode College. “The clubs have both able and disabled

Alan with Jamie Edwards, one of the winners of the TS5C Young Sports Person of the Year award. members, but allow everyone to compete on a level playing field.” It is also a main sponsor for the Apache Stealers, Somerset’s special Olympics team. As if that wasn’t enough, the charity is involved with supporting local healthy living projects such as the community trim trail recently opened at Strode College. And all this is done with no government assistance – relying solely on fundraising and the generosity of individuals and local businesses. Alan doesn’t have time to slow down. “There’s too much to do. It’s the charity’s 10th anniversary next year and we are planning lots of great events to celebrate. Watch this space.” Visit www.ts5c.org or email info@ts5c.org for more information on this great charity and the amazing work they do.

AN ARTISTIC TRIO Three local artists recently hosted a show at Glastonbury Galleries. Here’s a recap of their work if you were unfortunate enough to miss it

T

he Arts of Avalon show at Glastonbury Galleries was held between July 29 and August 8, and sadly we didn’t get to hear about it until after the deadline for the last issue. We were determined to pop along though, and we were fortunate enough to meet all the artists and check out their stunning work when we did. What stuck us most was the originality and diversity on show. Each artist was doing original and interesting work in their own field and, despite the hugely varied range of styles, they all somehow managed to compliment each other perfectly. Check out the links here, or the Gallery itself if you want to find out more about the individual artists.

MUSICIAN PROFILE

T

his is something a bit out of the ordinary this month, but I thought I would introduce you to the man behind the drum kit, the guy who keeps everyone else in time and all with a cheeky sense of humour. He is Sam Boughen. Sam has spent many years beating those sticks in various bands, including the incredibly catchy punk band Don’t Do Tuesdays. These days you can catch him in up-and-coming country/rock band Square One, who recently played at the Godney Gathering and Rock Against Cancer. They are rapidly building a solid

September 2016

reputation for themselves with a wealth of musical experience behind them. With a diverse playing style, a solid rhythm and a whole lot of charm, Sam is part of an elite group of musicians I admire the most. “Being in a band isn’t always the easiest thing to do. You have to compete with egos, faltering attitudes and finding time around everyone’s busy schedules, but when you get to that finish line, whether it’s a show, completed recording or even writing a song, that relief, elation and excitement is like nothing else.” Georgie Robbins

There’s a bit of a change this month, as we’ve got a word search for you – apparently not everyone is a fan of crosswords, oddly. The theme this month is African animals, but please do keep your suggestions for other things you’d like to see on this page. The email to send them in to is dean@super8media.co.uk. Have a great month and see you in October!

VIC FEST IS COMING! Make a date in your diary for Saturday, September 24, as that’s the day we’ll be launching our first Vic Fest event! We’ve got plenty of fun things planned for the day, including a wide selection of live music, sports events, plenty for the kids to do and loads of stalls to browse around and get something to eat or drink. The fun starts at midday, and goes through until midnight, and although

the day is free for everyone, we welcome donations to our two very worthy causes that will benefit from the day: Children’s World and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance – and there will even be an air ambulance landing during the day, too! We look forward to seeing you all there!
