Hunger pangs The Hunger Games series has been incredibly popular since the first film was released in 2012, and for good reason. Brilliantly adapted by the excellent series of books by Suzanne Collins, this final chapter in the story brings together all the threads for a confrontation that has been on the cards since Katniss won the original Hunger Games tournament. Will Katniss triumph and save the districts or will President Snow rule supreme? The only way to know for sure is to come and see the film for yourself!

The Lady in the Van is based on a true story, and is written up from the notes taken by writer Bennett during Miss Shepherd's stay. The film was actually shot in the actual house on the actual street where the events took place, Gloucester Crescent, and some of the same people still live in the road. "I imagine they shuddered in horror as the van made its way back into the street," said the film's director, Nicholas Hytner, in an interview with The Telegraph.

FEATUREMOVIE SECRETS FEATUREYOUNG ADULT FICTION The Young Ones

Young Adult stories, such as The Hunger Games and Twilight, have become on of the hottest genres in Hollywood. We take a look at some of the highlights so far as well as the ones you really shouldn’t miss. November 2015

widescreen

19

FEATUREYOUNG ADULT FICTION THE HUNGER GAMES SERIES

The Hunger Games books have been incredibly successful, and the films have done a very good job of translating a difficult story to the big screen in style. That’s been undeniably helped by the inspired casting of Jennifer Lawrence as the story’s lead, Katniss Everdeen.

Books in series: 3 Books released: 2008-2010 Films released: 2012-2015

THE DIVERGENT SERIES Comparisons between the Divergent and Hunger Games series were inevitable, but to do so would also be an injustice to what is a gripping and well-written trilogy of books. The second Divergent film (Insurgent) was released this year, and the final book (Ascendant) will be released over two films – much like Mockingjay.

THE HARRY POTTER SERIES

The perfect Young Adult books? Possibly, and the fact that they ended up being read by people of all ages shows just how readable they are. The films, despite a bumpy start with the first couple, ended up being the perfect examples of how to turn a book into a movie.

Books in series: 7 Books released: 1997-2007 Films released: 2001-2011

THE TWILIGHT SERIES The love story between Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) is now the stuff of legend. Most of the success of the films came down to the two stars, as well as the obvious chemistry between them, but it helped that the source material was perfectly targeted at a teenage audience.

FEATUREYOUNG ADULT FICTION THE MAZE RUNNER SERIES

The premise behind the Maze Runner book was a great one: a group of teenagers are trapped in the shadow of a giant maze with no recollection of how they got there. Needless to say, this also made for an action-packed and enjoyable movie, too.

Books in series: 5 Books released: 2009-2016 Films released: 2014-2017

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

Possibly the best and most life-affirming book you’ll ever read about terminal illness, John Green’s brilliant story was turned into an excellent film, too – with stellar performances from its two young leads, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

THE HIS DARK MATERIALS SERIES

This award-winning series of books by Philip Pullman seemed like the perfect stories to translate to film, but the lukewarm reception to the first one, The Golden Compass (which was the first book’s US title) means that we’re unlikely to see film versions of the other two books.

Books in series: 3 Books released: 1995-2000 Film released: 2007

Before Godzilla vs. Kong is released in 2020, we’ll have Godzilla 2 in 2018 (once again directed by Gareth Edwards, as soon as he’s finished his work on Rogue One) and Kong: Skull Island in 2017. Wells’ very own Edgar Wright is going to be working on a film with Johnny Depp. Titled Fortunately, The Milk, it’s an adaptation of a best-selling children’s book by Neil Gaiman. More news when we have it.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, has bought up the rights to an upcoming book on the VW emissions scandal. DiCaprio, a keen environmentalist, recently signed a deal with Netflix to produce a series of green-themed documentaries for them.

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS

THE LOVE TRIANGLE Saoirse Ronan describes the trials and tribulations of her character’s split life in Ireland and America

On being a girl of two countries “I’m very Irish in some ways but I do have an American kind of sensibility as well and I was born in New York. I think that made it even more emotional for me, because I had such a strong connection to both places and these people.” Picking a screenwriter like Nick Hornby “The incredible thing about Nick is that he’s not even from Ireland! Yet he managed to completely capture the spirit of that country and the people from there. The script writing was so beautiful, and so beautifully subtle.”

November 2015

On her character’s difficult decision “This story is about choice. It’s about a choice that life at a certain stage will allow you to make. I don’t know if she makes the right decision – I think they both offered her happiness.” Why the story of Brooklyn was particularly close to her heart “I think it was because it’s about my people. It was the journey that my parents went on back in the 80s. They moved over to New York and they kind of went through the same things, even though it was a different era and a different time.”

TOTALLY FABULOUS! Ab Fab is coming to the big screen

During a press interview for The Hunger Games, the film’s star Jennifer Lawrence let slip that she’s writing a script with her new best friend, Amy Schumer. Apparently, the two will play sisters in the as-yet-untitled film.

F

ans of the brilliant sitcom Absolutely Fabulous will be delighted to hear that Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders), the stars of the hit TV show, are currently shooting scenes in both the UK and the South of France for a film to be released next year. With a script by Saunders herself, the dynamic duo will be joined by cast regulars Saffy (Julia Sawalha), Bubble (Jane Horrocks) and Edina’s mother (June Whitfield). The plot sees the pair in a typical amount of trouble when their hedonistic lifestyle causes them to disrupt a high profile fashion party and they’re forced to flee to the French Riviera. As long as the humour transfers to the big screen well then we’re convinced that the Ab Fab movie will be a winner.

Hail Caesar! starring John Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes and Scarlett Johansson, is the new film from the hugely talented Cohen brothers, and is due for release in February next year. Check out the excellent trailer online.

Ant-Man’s sequel now has a name and a release date. Ant-Man and the Wasp (for that is now what it’s officially called) is part of Marvel’s Phase 3 film sequel and will be release in July, 2018.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS TRAILER

TBA

We pick apart the hottest new trailer to bring you the hidden details you might’ve missed.

Die Hard 6 is going to happen

I

ncredibly, it’s been 27 years since John McClane exploded onto our screens in the first Die Hard movie, and although we thought the series was over, we’ve heard a sixth film is going to happen. It’s rumoured that Die Hard 6 will be an origins story featuring a young McClane as a cop in 1970s New York. One person who definitely thinks it’s a good idea is Bruce Willis – who won’t star in the movie but could feature in flash-forward scenes. “It’s a very good idea, and I’m very happy about it,” said Willis recently. “It’s a really cool idea because it’s the origin story. We’re going to bounce back and forth.”

0:53

Now we see Kylo Ren in the full armour talking to the mask of Darth Vader himself. “Nothing will stand in our way,” says Ren. “I will finish what you started.”

TOP FIVE Sorry, haven’t I seen you somewhere before? Five stars of The Hunger Games series that are bigger stars than you may have realised.

Elizabeth is unrecognisable as Effie Trinket, but you surely couldn’t miss her scene-stealing performance in the Pitch Perfect films.

The trailer starts with Rey (Daisy Ridley) scavenging through the wreck of an Imperial Star Destroyer that’s crash-landed on her home planet of Jakku. What is she looking for, though?

Princess Leia finally shows up for the third Star Wars trailer, if only for a fraction of a second. Clearly something dramatic has happened (there’s a shot of Rey crying a few seconds earlier), but what?

JOSH HUTCHERSON

Josh has been acting since he was just 10 years old, but shot to fame starring alongside Dwayne Johnson in the Journey films.

The Empire is no more, but the extreme First Order, lead by former officers of the Empire, have their own plans for galactic domination. Here Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) addresses the Order’s Stormtrooper army.

Finn (John Boyega) goes head-to-head in a lightsaber battle with Ren. Is that Luke’s saber he’s wielding? And is the Force strong in the young hero? All this, and much more, will be revealed soon enough…

WOODY HARRELSON

One of the hardest-working actors on the circuit, Woody is currently filming his role for the third Planet of the Apes movie.

TOBY JONES

One of Britain’s most versatile actors, Toby will next be seen on the big screen as Captain Mainwaring in the remake of Dad’s Army.

VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN STARRING: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Jessica Brown Findlay, Charles Dance, Mark Gatiss DIRECTOR: Paul McGuigan

ames McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star in a dynamic and thrilling twist on a legendary tale. Radical scientist Victor Frankenstein (McAvoy) and his equally brilliant protégé Igor Strausman (Radcliffe) share a noble vision of aiding humanity through their groundbreaking research into immortality. But Victor’s experiments go too far, and his obsession has horrifying consequences. Only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness and save him from his monstrous creation. Uniquely, Victor Frankenstein is told through Igor's perspective, and also has a strong vein of humour running through it – think of Guy Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes and you're close. With the dynamic duo of McAvoy and Radcliffe though, this is another film we're going to be keeping an eye out for this December.

FEATURE

utting aside Spectre, no other film released this year is as highly anticipated as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We’ve had three trailers (which cunningly reveal very little about the film’s plot) and a whole host of potentially spoilerific leaks, but plot details remain thin on the ground. We do know that The Force Awakens is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi and that it'll centre around the three new characters Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), as well as find space for the old guard Luke, Leia and Han. The Empire has been defeated, but remnants of it live on to become the new First Order. Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) is the as-yet-unseen head of the Order, while Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) slips into the Vader role. Any other information released online beyond that falls very much into the rumour category. Some rumours are clearly stronger and more believable than others, but until the film’s actually released on December 17, we won’t know for sure. One thing we do know for sure though is that J.J. Abrams is bringing Star Wars back and it's coming back in style.

ou’ve surely heard of the Peanuts comic strip. At its peak it was syndicated across 2,600 newspapers with a total readership of 355 million people spread across 75 countries! The Peanuts Movie is the first time Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang have made it to the big screen, and it’s clear that a large amount of thought and care has been put into the writing and animation to ensure that although the 3D technology is bang up to date, the style and feel of the original strip remains. Incredibly, it's been 65 years since the first Peanuts comic strip was written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate the fact than with this glowing tribute of a film.

This real-life maritime disaster would then inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

I’m the champion of finding the sunniest spot, and can often be found sunning myself in the shop. I particularly like lying across the doorway as it means everyone has to stop and stroke me! Who would play you in your biopic? It would have to be someone as devilishly handsome as myself so really the only dog that comes close is my son, Basil!
