WELCOME WELLS FILM CENTRE WELCOMES YOU TO THE WELLS FESTIVAL OF FILM 2017
W
elcome to our second Festival of Film! Last year the theme was centred around the Queen’s birthday festivities and the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. We had great fun at our outdoor screening of The Huntsman: Winter’s War at The Bishop’s Palace, and lots of films came back to the big screen including Olivier’s Henry V and a tribute screening of A Little Chaos – as well as a pre-release screening of Florence Foster Jenkins.
This year our theme is Celebration, as it is the 25th Anniversary of the Wells Film Centre, and it’s also been 10 years since the release of Hot Fuzz. We are so pleased to say we have already sold out for not only one but two outdoor screenings of Hot Fuzz at The Bishop’s Palace over the Festival! Thank you to all of you who bought tickets, and have made the festival a big success already. We are excited to bring you such a variety of products this year, and we hope you will find something new and interesting to enjoy over five days which are planned out to showcase exactly what we do, from our afternoon Tea Matinees to charity screenings and pre-release films. Also during the festival we have lots of Q&As with directors and stars – just check out the tag on each event over the coming pages to find out what kind of event it is. We look forward to seeing you, and thank you for joining in the first part of our celebratory Silver Anniversary. Sally Cooper Proprietor Wells Film Centre

SPECIAL EVENT FRIDAY 28 / SATURDAY 29 APRIL – 9PM THE BISHOP’S PALACE
HOT SHOTS!
How well do you know Hot Fuzz? Here are halfa-dozen facts that might surprise you…
1
Simon Pegg’s character, Nicholas Angel, was named after the film’s music supervisor, Nick Angel.
2
Wells Cathedral had to be digitally erased from shots because Edgar Wright wanted Sandford to be a village, not a city.
3
As a teenager, Wright worked at the actual Somerfield that appears in the movie.
4
Wright’s and Pegg’s mothers and Wright’s drama teacher play the judges for the villageof-the-year contest at the end of the film.
5
Danny Butterman’s massive DVD collection is actually the combined collections of Edgar Wright, his brother Oscar Wright, and fellow director Joe Cornish.
6
When Danny tosses a DVD of Supercop into a bin in the supermarket, a copy of Shaun of the Dead can be seen next to it, but the cover uses the film’s Spanish and Portuguese title: Zombies Party. FOR BOOKINGS VISIT WELLSFILMCENTRE.CO.UK
OUTDOOR SCREENING
THE CROWNING GLORY
I
n May 2006, the cast and crew of Hot Fuzz came to film in Wells. The Crown had been director Edgar Wright’s local when he lived in the area, which is why the popular 15th century inn was chosen to feature so prominently in the film. Much of the action took place in the Market Place, outside The Crown, along with the massive shoot-out scene towards the close of the film. “Wells was abuzz with the excitement of filming in the City,” said Sara Blair, marketing manager at The Crown. “People came up to watch what was going on and see the stars wander through the Market Place.” “Hot Fuzz was released in 2007 and, thanks to Derek Cooper at the Wells Film Centre, we welcomed back Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and crew
members for a meal as part of the film’s Wells premiere,” she continued. “While appreciating the success of Shaun of the Dead, we could not have anticipated the huge impact the film would have on The Crown and Wells as a whole, which continues today.” People still regularly visit and stay at The Crown on the basis of it being in the film. There is memorabilia and photographs in reception and the bar, which is never without cranberry juice!

This screening is FREE but must be prebooked in advance at the cinema or by phone on 01749 673195 Feature Length 104 minutes Cert U Tickets Free
We have been told by many parents that they find going to a public film screening difficult as some children (and adults) with special needs have sensory sensitivities to sound and light; they may also disturb other cinemagoers by making noise or needing to go out for a break –
these are the words of the parents, not ours. For Special Needs Friendly Screenings the soundtrack is turned down a little and the house lights remain on low in the auditorium. If anyone makes a noise or moves around then that is absolutely fine.
MERCS SATURDAY, 29 APRIL – 2.30PM WELLS FILM CENTRE
Those craving some action will find a lot to love in MERCS. Part action movie, part graphic novel, the animated scenes are cleverly interwoven with the live ones to make a rather pleasing whole.
