WELCOME W MAY 2018 #144
hile sitting in the middle of a (very) small April heatwave, thoughts in The Basis office turn to the season called summer, complete with long evenings, balmy days and the joys of getting out and about. The ‘getting out’ bit is easy; the ‘about’ bit can be a bit harder… you’ve filled the car with family, friends and enough snacks to floor a fully grown elephant that’s a bit peckish, but where do you go? We’ve got all you need for the merry month of May, from May Day fairs, to comedy festivals, the return of CREATE:SPACE and so very much more. And if that’s not enough for you, head over to our shiny new website at www.thebasisonline.com, where you can get more info on the events in the magazine, but also find hundreds more across the whole county. The only problem you’re likely to have is which one do you do first? Have fun y’all, and see you next month.

EXHIBITION TO SHOWCASE SOMERSET’S BEAUTY
As part of this year’s Somerset Day activities, and in conjunction with the CREATE:SPACE II community of artists, Street Parish Council are pleased to be hosting an exhibition of locally sourced artworks celebrating the beauty and history of Somerset. The exhibition will be open daily at the Street Parish Rooms, 11am-4pm, from Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 May, and entry is free.

CREATE:SPACE II RETURNING TO CRISPIN CENTRE Creativity begins in the creation. From the silent earth the green blade rises, and new life, once hidden, springs up from the ground. It’s not just across the easy rolling countryside either, but from every crack and hollow, through rock and concrete. Wherever the April rains have fallen, and the early Summer sun begins to penetrate, life, hope, and growth cannot be contained. People are just the same. The seasons cycle as the planet spins, and while a cold concrete space has lain dormant since the beginning of the year, ideas have been forming, plans and concepts taking shape, in the hearts and hands of artists, poets, makers, and musicians. On Saturday May 28, the diverse and wonderful community that grew up around the CREATE:SPACE II exhibition at the start of 2018, hopes to return to the old Tesco site at the Crispin Centre in Street, to begin a new
adventure, filled with new creations, collaborations, and community. Unless the building finds new owners or tenants in the next month, they will be back to invade it with light and colour for another six-week run, daily from 11am-4pm until July 7. Search for ‘CREATE:SPACE II’ on Facebook for more details, or email Dylan on good.news@streetharvest.org.uk.

STUDENTS GO LIVE FOR FUNDRAISER The Leylines are playing at the Strode Theatre on May 11, which in itself isn’t that unusual, but what’s especially interesting about this particular gig is that it’s been put on in partnership with Strode Live. Strode Live is a production and performance company run by Strode College’s Dan Shaw and staffed entirely by College pupils on the Music and Music Production courses. As part of their coursework, the students put on a number of events under the Strode Live banner throughout the year, running everything from marketing and promotion to sorting out the bands themselves and their riders for the night.
Moonwatcher
We popped along to the college to speak to a group of students on the course, and were immediately impressed by their passion for music and professionalism. Most students on the course are in at least one band, and the Leylines gig is supported by four student bands – Blank Authority, Moonwatcher, Leah Grace and Zaranis. All money raised from Strode Live events goes to help support a music school in India that Strode College is linked to. The students even produce a CD compilation each year featuring student bands at the college – we’ll have more information about the CD in an upcoming issue. Tickets for The Leylines on May 11 cost just £11 – and only £5 if you’re 18 or under – and can be bought through the Strode Theatre box office at www. strodetheatre.org.uk or 01458 442846. To find out more about Strode Live, head to their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StrodeLive.
MEN’S SHED GROUP OFFICIALLY OPEN
Street Men’s Shed is now fully open for members to pursue their own projects or to help with various community-based projects, with a full range of woodworking tools including three lathes, power saws and hand tools. There are plenty of workbenches for projects to be worked on, and if you don’t want to make projects in wood, they have a dust-free ‘craft working’ area suitable for just about anything from textile work to electronics. New members are always welcome, so why not pop in for a cuppa and see how they’re doing? The club is based at Unit 10 of The Tanyard in Leigh Road, and is open Tuesday 9am-1pm

STYLES OF SOMERSET TO HOST FREE ART EVENT The Rogues Gallery shop on the High Street in Glastonbury has invited over 30 street artists to come to Glastonburys’ skate park near the Red Brick Building for Styles of Somerset, a day of painting and music on Saturday, May 12. Local DJs and MCs (Big’ Smokin’ Joe, Krazy-legs, Pandamonium, Pixie-Pete and more) will supply beats and bars to the street art. There will also be a second venue by Bridie’s Yard which will be solventfree. Water-based spray paint will be used as well as acrylic and brush. Here there will also be three free graffiti workshops for kids/teenagers. These will take place between Midday-1pm, 2-3pm and 4-5pm. The workshops are suitable for ages 10 plus, and limited spaces are available – contact the Rogues Gallery shop to book. This area will also have local DJs, musicians and poets, and the ZigZag team will be running
arts and crafts workshops, too. In the evening, NeverGlade (Sunrise Festivals dance area crew) will be hosting an 18-plus afterevent party at the Red Brick Building. Come along to see a great range of street-art styles from pioneers of the UK graffiti scene, such as Lokey, Boswell, DeeKay, as well as new artists, including Glastonbury’s MOAuk crew. Their coffee is both Fairtrade and organic (and their delicious hot chocolate is Fairtrade), and all their takeaway food boxes are compostable. They’ve also recently made the move to paper straws, too! Daniels, the home of the Ultimate Breakfast, is also the venue for the Breakfast Club monthly music event. This month they have Brian Stone playing on the 13th.

I have lived in this area all my life and been involved in the Motor Trade since 1986 (mainly Irvine Volkswagen and Purseys in Street). I pride myself on helping clients choose cars which will suit them, and although I will only have a small handpicked selection, I can and will source virtually whatever you’re after. All my cars will have had a multi-point check and be offered with a minimum six months MOT, and a range of warranty packages for that added peace of mind. Every car I sell will be competitively priced, and I can also offer a part-exchange facility, too. I am not the traditional used car dealership. I operate on an appointment-only basis and then I can

riginally released on the Wii U in 2014, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze went on a win a whole raft of awards for its stunning gameplay. As with the previous four DK Country games, it’s a very smooth side-scroller with fantastic characters and level design. This 2018 Switch version has much improved graphics, a new control system and the Funky Mode – an easier game mode starring Funky Kong as a playable character for the first time.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WELLS
How much do you know about the Royal British Legion and the fantastic fundraising work they do locally? Time to find out more…
T
he Royal British Legion is a countrywide charity that was set up to provide financial, social and emotional support to both members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, the families and dependents – although you no longer have to be an ex-member of the Forces to join. On a national level, the Royal British Legion are probably best known for the annual Poppy Appeal and Remembrance services – including the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall. But we’ve decided to concentrate on one branch for this month’s Community Spotlight: Wells. The Wells Branch of the British Legion raises a staggering amount during their Poppy Appeal – at the last count, 2017’s Appeal raised over £27,000 – and they have a number of social events during the year, some of which are open to the general public… Sunday, July 29 Summer Ball, The Swan Hotel Sunday, September 9 Gin Tasting Evening, The Swan Hotel Saturday, October 27 97th Annual Poppy Concert, Wells Town Hall Sunday, December 2 Christmas Dinner Party, The Swan Hotel Tickets for all social events are available for non-members at the Wells Film Centre, while members can book tickets through the secretary on the email address to the right.
The Legion is always looking for new members, and it’s a great way to meet new friends. For more information about the Wells branch of the Legion, head to their Facebook page, or email the Legion Secretary at wellsrblsecretary@aol.co.uk. There are also branches of the Legion in Street and Shepton Mallet. Find out more about them on the official Legion website at www.britishlegion.org.uk.

MEAT AND GREET
P
aul Jeffery has been running P&K Meats for nine years now, and the last seven of those have been in his shop at the Bayliss Centre, Street. He started working in the shop under the previous owner in 1997 as a Saturday Boy, but learned the butchery skills needed for the job quickly. Then, when the shop came up for sale nine years ago, it was too good an opportunity to miss. Since then, he’s been trading as P&K Meats, expanding the range of the products he sells – as well as the range of people he sells to. With Summer just around the corner, it’s the ideal opportunity to get the barbeque out of the shed and fired up, and P&K Meats are able to offer a stunning range of fresh meats to cook on it. Rather than selling pre-made Barbeque Packs, P&K Meats encourage you to pick your own meats and then they can do a good deal for you – making sure that you get exactly what
you need and like. You know you’re getting the bestquality produce around too, as all the meat sold in the shop is reared in the South West and is 100% free range. There are plenty of advantages of shopping at your local butchers, including a personal, professional service that you won’t get at the supermarkets. Meat can be cut and dressed to your own specifications, and even prepared for roasting. P&K Meats are one of the few butchers to sell dry-aged beef, and if you haven’t tried it yet then you’re in for a treat, as dry aging gives the meat an incredible depth of flavour. What’s not so well-known is that P&K Meats supply a large number of hotels and restaurants across all of Somerset – as well as parts of Dorset. They also offer a free home delivery service too, and you can place your order over the phone on 01458 441439 or email Paul on pauljeffery@pandkmeats.co.uk.

THE
art of your pet’s annual health check at the vets will involve listening to their chest using a stethoscope (auscultation). But what are we actually listening to? The main thing we are listening to is the heartbeat, and can we hear a murmur? A heart murmur is an abnormal sound – instead of the normal ‘lub dub’ heartbeat sound, a murmur is best described as a whooshing sound. This is caused by a leaky valve within the heart, and some blood going backwards instead of forwards. The most common cause of a heart murmur is a condition called mitral valve disease. This is usually diagnosed in middle-aged to older, small- or medium-breed dogs. A recent large-scale study was carried out on when to start medication in dogs that have a heart murmur. Previously, the evidence suggested there was no benefit to starting medication until the pet started to show signs of congestive heart failure, due to the inefficient pumping of the heart and the leaky valve. However, the new evidence strongly suggests starting medication before this stage – which means the pet would have a longer period of time before showing signs of heart failure. (On average, a year and a half, a significant proportion of a dog’s life expectancy.) So, if a murmur is diagnosed at your dog’s annual health check, you might find our advice has changed, and we suggest bringing them in for

ISLA INSPIRED IS EXPANDING!
T
he original Isla Inspired shop, which is run by mother and daughter team Fiona and Gabby, opened at 54 High Street in Street at the beginning of last year. Now, after they were given the opportunity to expand in to the shop next door, they have even more space for their stunning range of children’s clothing, plus a few new services, too. The extra space means that Isla Inspired can now stock even more clothes, as well as Paint Your Own Pottery, Drop-in Craft Mornings and Attachment Parenting UK meetings. That’s not all though, as the new shop will also feature a Sling Library, Cloth Nappy Library and even Children’s Hairdressing, too! They are also continuing to run their very popular Organic Baby Clothes Library Subscription Service from both shops. It’s a great and inexpensive way to clothe your children from birth to three years. You pay just £25 a month and you get a package of between
15-22 items which can be delivered nationwide. When your child grows out of any of the clothes, they’re simply exchanged for the next size up. Isla Inspired is open from 9am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. They stock a stunning range of organic cotton children’s clothing from birth to five years, as well as a fabulous range of Neal’s Yard Organic products and Plan toys. For more information on Isla Inspired, head to their website at www.islainspired.co.uk, their Facebook page, or just pop into their shops!
