NEWS VAN BACK FOR EXTRAVAGANZA T Legendary singer returning to Glastonbury
here’s something special planned for the 20th anniversary of the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza on Saturday, August 6, as Irish music legend Van Morrison returns to headline the event – which is one of only a handful of dates the singer will be playing in the UK this year. “We needed something really special for this 20 year celebration,” says event organiser Michael Eavis, “and there can surely be nobody better than Van to arouse the spirits, and stir up the emotions of this wonderful place!” “I’ve always found Glastonbury Abbey to have a special spiritual resonance for me and look forward to coming back this summer,” says Van Morrison, who visited the town as recently as last autumn.
BASIS
THE
04
Morrison headlined the Extravaganza back in 2007, and is a regular to the area as he’s also played on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival many times over the last 30 years. Those looking to make the most of their visit to the area can now stay on longer, as the family camping facilities have been expanded this year, meaning that those heading to the Extravaganza can stay more than one night. Abbey director Janet Bell says, “We are grateful to Michael Eavis for all the support he gives the Abbey, and for staging the Extravaganza here. It is a spectacular backdrop for a great summer night out.” For more information on the Extravaganza and to book your tickets, head online to www.glastonburyabbey.com/extravaganza.

Wells hosts first film festival this month
T
he first Wells Film Festival, which is run in conjunction with the Wells Film Centre, will take place between the 21-24 of April, and features a wide range of exciting events packed into the four-day event. To celebrate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on April 21 and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death on April 23, the theme for this year will be Kings and Queens. The main event will be the dramatic outdoor screening of The Huntsman Winter’s War, which was partly filmed in Wells last July. The film will be shown in the stunning surroundings of the Bishop’s Palace, with a range of unique extras to make it an evening you’ll never forget.
April 2016
Other highlights include a very special performance of A Little Chaos as a tribute to the late Alan Rickman – who both directed the film and starred in it. The film will be introduced by the renowned conductor Charles Hazlewood, who was a close friend of Rickman. On the final day of the festival there will be an exclusive opportunity to see Meryl Streep’s new film, Florence Foster Jenkins two weeks ahead of the official UK release date. In it, Steep stars as Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreams of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. For more information and to book tickets, either ring the Wells Film Centre on 01749 673195 or go to www.wellsfilmcentre.co.uk.

A 14-year-old Wells Blue School student was given a Glastonbury Festival exclusive by Emily Eavis. “She told me that Muse will be the Friday night headliners on the Pyramid stage,” said Duncan Warnock. “I had gone to Worthy Farm on Thursday to interview Emily, the festival’s co-organiser, for GFM, the community radio station for Glastonbury, Street and Wells. “My friends at school pestered me to reveal what Emily had told me but she had said I must say nothing until the band announced it themselves.” Muse did this on Friday night via Twitter and Duncan played Emily’s interview on GFM between 9-10am on Saturday. It was the only interview Emily had done about Muse coming to Glastonbury and she added: “We would love to persuade Aretha Franklin to come to the festival from America.” Duncan has also secured a £1,000 grant from Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the theatre impresario who lives near Bruton, to help pay for a new GFM transmitter which will strengthen the radio station’s signal. “I wrote to Sir Cameron saying I am getting a lot out of GFM and we wanted more young people to be able to get involved,” said Duncan.

Eco-friendly radio series was produced by local company
O
n Sunday April 3, BBC’s CBeebies Radio hosts the series finale of Eddie Green and Friends, an eco-friendly educational programme created by former editor of The Basis, Arran Dutton. If you missed them then there’s no need to worry as all 10 episodes are available to stream online, so new pre-school audiences can enjoy the fun-filled adventures of Eddie, who is played by eight-year-old Glastonbury schoolboy, Joseph. When asked what to expect from Eddie Green, Arran said, “Eddie and friends learn to make sock puppets and jam jar greenhouses to open them up to the idea of re-using materials, visit Secret World Rescue Centre to learn about the importance of caring for wildlife, and in other episodes they learn about growing vegetables and planting flowers with the future in mind. We’ve included lots of information about recycling, using electricity and water efficiently, and greener travel, so hopefully
young listeners will take some of that on board whilst having lots of fun.” Dave Perry and Stuart Packer of Street joined Arran on the team at production company Audio Factory to craft the episodes. More information about this series and their other work with CBeebies Radio can be found at www.audiofactory.co.uk/ childrensradio.

BEANS ON TOAST British folk singer Jay McAllister, who’s better known as Beans on Toast, has been slowly building up a strong reputation for powerful songs dealing with the standard topics of love and politics but with an original twist. His 50-track debut album, Standing on a Chair was produced by Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett.

his month the Glastonbury & Street Musical Comedy Society are bringing the brilliant Sister Act to the Strode Theatre from Tuesday the 19th of April until Saturday the 23rd. This isn’t the Sister Act you’ll know from the Whoopi Goldberg movies (although Whoopi is a producer of the West End version) though, as it’s a full musical that takes the exploits of the wayward Deloris Van Carter and creates something that’s become a musical hit all around the world. A Walk to Dundon Beacon
It’s time to get the wellies out again!
Y
ou can park on street hill near the Youth Hostel, or walk there from Street if you are feeling energetic. Head toward Marshall’s Elm, and take the narrow road (Pages Lane) on the right just before the crossroads. Walk all the way down past Ivythorn manor and take the footpath across the field ahead, following the hedge to your left. Crossing stiles as you find them, the path emerges into Hurst Drove. At the crossroads, walk straight on into Peak Lane. The turning on the right at the top of the hill leads to St Andrew’s Church, which boasts a very impressive ancient Yew tree in the graveyard. Before that, there is a very sharp left-hand turn called School Lane; proceed along here and up the track on the right past the gate (don’t cross any stiles). Take the small footpath on the left just after the ‘nature reserve’ sign. Continuing around the hill, you eventually start to walk up some steps and come to a shady clearing with a much-repaired rope swing. If you look back before leaving the space, you will see a face in a tree trunk. This, according to the locals, is a representation of Michael Eavis, and if you dance naked round

the tree on April the first he will grant you a Glastonbury festival ticket. Apparently. Ahem. At the top of the hill is one of those odd metal stiles, pull the gates apart and step through the gap. You have now arrived at Dundon Beacon nature reserve, Iron Age hill fort, and a good place for a picnic on a sunny day. The path in front goes across the reserve to the track leading back down to School Lane. Just before the gate there is a concrete water trough, close to which is part of a fallen tree trunk covered in toadstools. I was told to look out for the ‘fun guy’ on this log, but sadly he wasn’t there when I walked past. There is an alternative route back from Hurst Drove; it’s marked on the map, and worth taking if the starlings are around as they congregate en masse in the cattle sheds. nyone who’s had the pleasure of catching Glastonbury’s Swampgrass live knows that this five-piece blues outfit are capable of belting out some stunning blues numbers. Sharon has been singing for around five years, but it was only when she began going to local open mic events with Brad that the pair began writing songs together and considered forming a band. They’ve also just released their debut album, One Eye Open, which features 10 tracks all written by Brad and Sharon themselves.
April 2016
When it came to the album’s launch, Swampgrass looked around for a venue with a difference, which ended up being the United Reform Church on the High Street. “We wanted to do something a bit special,” says guitarist Brad, “and so we looked around town for a venue no-one uses for our type of music. Something that was different and weird enough for a special occasion. It was the perfect night. Three great bands and the bar sold out right at the end of the night!” Swampgrass are playing the Hawthorns on Friday, April 1.

To celebrate the redesign of The Basis we thought it would be nice to delve back into the past and bring you something from the very first issue way back in January 2006. Like when it appeared the first time, there’s a prize to anyone who can work out the name of the Street building featured in the shaded squares. Send the name and your contact details to dean@ super8media.co.uk by April 30 and one lucky winner will get themselves a mystery prize.
