WELCOME! APRIL 2017 #131
I
t’s now officially been a whole year since we took over running of The Basis, and we have to say it’s been a great one. What we were unaware of before taking it over was just how loved the magazine is, but we’ve heard so many positive comments from people about how they enjoy reading it every month that it really does make all the hard work worth it! As always, it’s you lot that help shape The Basis. We’re always adding new features (we’ve got one lined up already for next month) but we always want to hear your comments and feedback. Got something you’d like to see in a future issue? Let us know and it might just happen. See you again next month.

fter the success of last year’s Wells Film Festival, we’re happy to say that it’s back for 2017, and there’s even more movie-related treats for you to enjoy! The Wells Festival of Film runs from April 26-30, and features everything from movie classics to Aardman modelmaking classes (where you can make your own Morph!) and pre-release screenings with cast and crew Q&As. One of the highlights of the festival is the unique screenings of Hot Fuzz in the gardens of the stunning Bishop’s Palace to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary. Unfortunately the tickets for both performances have sold out, but you can still go on one of the excellent Hot Fuzz Walking Tours.

A GREAT NIGHT FOR A VERY GREAT CAUSE
A The LEADER funding programme through Levels and Moors has awarded £19,000 to Glastonbury Town Council to assist with the costs of internal alterations to St Dunstan’s House. The Council purchased the freehold of St Dunstan’s House from Glastonbury Abbey in May 2016. The location of the building provides an opportunity to promote the town to visitors, tourists and residents. Following a well-attended consultation event last October where more than 500 people shared their thoughts on the future of the building and the town in general, it was concluded that an Information Centre would be of enormous benefit. While it may appear that nothing much has happened to the house since its purchase, behind the scenes an enormous amount of work has taken please. A planning application for the creation of disabled access to both the Town Hall and St Dunstan’s House has been submitted. This application includes alterations to the ground floor, where it is intended to host an Information Centre. Cycle racks, seating and additional flowers on a raised piazza will provide an ambience and welcome to all who visit the town.

very special event at the Bocabar on Saturday, April 29 will be held to raise funds for the Rachel’s Wish charity. Animal House will be a night of superb music featuring the very best local DJs and all to collect as much money as possible for this very worthy cause. Just before Christmas last year, Glastonbury woman Rachel Hawkins was diagnosed with Gastric Cancer, which tragically began as a simple infection called H Pylori – a bacterial infection which attacks the gastric system. If Rachel had been diagnosed in time it could have easily been cured with a course of antibiotics, but after years of misdiagnosis, it unfortunately grew into something that’s likely to be terminal – there’s on a 10% survival rate for this form of cancer. Rachel’s dream is to be able to take her family abroad for a holiday of a lifetime, and so a fundraising page has been set up at www.youcaring. com/rachelhawkins-760028. Here you can find out more information about Rachel, her condition and the plans to take Rachel and her children to a dream holiday at Disneyland Paris.
HEADS UP TO GLASTONBURY ABBEY

ast issue we featured the first editor of The Basis, and this month we have a story on its last one, Arran Dutton. Arran co-runs the locally-based audio production company, Audio Factory, and they were recently commissioned to produce the official audiobook in the US of one of the biggest films of the year, Beauty and the Beast – as well as a spin-off title, Lost in a Book. Congratulations to Arran and the team, and it just goes to show how much creative talent there is in the area. Know of any others? Drop us a line and we’ll feature them in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Street Parish Councillors got a flavour of public opinion at a meeting on March 14 about the imminent sale of the Envy Nightclub on Leigh Road. The Parish Council hopes that the building could be bought for community use, but does not have the money to purchase and refurbish Envy – the council would prefer to have enough resources to continue to support the local initiatives it already helps. Those attending the meeting strongly supported the need for something suitable for young people, and for the community as a whole to have access to a village centre multi-use facility. Mr Dylan Thomas, pastor of The Harvest Church, spoke saying that it might be possible for their church to buy it to use as a base for their outreach work; he also put forward the possibility of some type of joint project. The auction is to be held at the end of April, so hopefully we’ll know more soon.

FUNDRAISING QUIZ
O Let’s get one thing straight… ZZ Birmingham is not a ZZ Top covers band from Birmingham! He’s a dedicated blues musician who presents the Blues Cruise programme on GFM radio each Tuesday from 9-10pm, repeated on Sundays 6-7pm. ZZ plays an eclectic selection of blues, gospel, old-time jazz, swing and more – mainly drawn from his huge collection of 2,000 vinyl albums and 2,000 CDs. “Blues music is not all doom and gloom,” he says with a broad smile. “The songs say life is tough but it will be all right. Don’t forget that blues music is the root of so much of today’s pop music.” ZZ has been presenting the Blues Cruise for six or seven years to entertain and spread the word. A Sonny Boy Williamson album hooked him on the blues at 18, and it helped him deal with the teenage angst he was feeling at the time. In the words of bluesman Brian Robertson: “I am not here to explain the blues. Just the opposite. The blues are here to explain me.” ZZ also likes this quote from the great Willie Dixon: “You can have the blues because your woman went away. Then you can have them the next day because she has come back.” ZZ is available for solo gigs, with a duo or a band. Check his website zzbirmingham.com. Philip Welch

C
rispin School’s recent production of Oliver has been considered to be a massive hit, with the school receiving many congratulatory emails and glowing reviews. The production was very much a ‘whole school’ event, with the music department playing the music for the whole show, the Art and DT departments helped with set construction and other members of staff helped sell raffle tickets and programmes.

If you were at 2015’s Godney Gathering then you will surely remember the brilliant set by Dr Meaker – in fact, many said they were the best band of the day, even better than the headliners, UB40. But whether you were there or not, the fact that the band are returning to the area means that this is one gig this month that you can’t afford to miss. Supporting them are local favourites UK:ID, who also pulled off a blinding set at Godney last year.

FARÈS K MOUSSA
It’s time to find out more about the new manager of the Strode Theatre
I
t’s mixed emotions this month at the Strode Theatre, as while we all say goodbye to Liz Leyshon, who’s been a brilliant manager for a number of years and transformed it into the wonderful theatre we know and love, we also welcome Farès K Moussa, a highly experienced theatre manager who’s already planning how to take the theatre on to the next level.
A background in theatre Farès served seven years as House Manager at the Royal Opera House, with particular responsibility for visiting companies, commercial events, contingency planning and Front of House, where he also played an active role in liaison with the London theatre community and co-convening courses in arts administration for the Royal Ballet School and Kings College London. In Edinburgh, he has been a Director and Trustee of Leith Theatre Trust, managing the finances and setting-up operations during the

redevelopment of a 1,500-capacity 1930s theatre complex – and where he was also Managing Director of a cultural tours company. Farès has researched and taught anthropology in a number of universities, including the University of Edinburgh and École normale supérieure in Paris, with particular interests in ancient and contemporary arts practice, and is currently affiliated to Oxford University. Speaking about his new role, Farès said: “I am very excited to be taking on responsibility for Strode Theatre, which is such a treasure to the community in and around Mid-Somerset. My predecessor, Liz Leyshon, has done so much over the years – in the face of adversity – to keep Strode Theatre alive as a thriving and invaluable cultural hub and community resource. I look forward to building on her great work and continuing to develop an ever-more exciting programme of live performance, cinema, live screenings and exhibitions.”

SPOTLIGHT
HEADS UP
It’s time for a new regular feature in the magazine, as we take a closer look at the brilliant organisations in the area that do so much to help those in need
F
or the first Community Spotlight we went to visit Heads Up in Wells, who do so much to help those suffering from mental health problems. Social isolation is one of the biggest problems of the mentally ill, usually leading to deterioration in their condition and ultimately costing more in both care and benefits. Through helping people with mental ill health to feel good and function well, Heads Up works to build an individual’s ability to cope with life’s challenges and maintain well-being in the face of adversity. Heads Up provides a therapeutic environment and a range of services, support and guidance for adults of all ages recovering from or living with mental health needs, including Dementia and other difficulties. Their Memories Workshops not only enable those living with Dementia to spend time with others in a
safe, nurturing environment but also provides vital respite for carers and families. Activities throughout the day are based on individual preferences and can include, but are not limited to, arts and crafts, cooking, sharing memories, Tai Chi, singing and dancing They believe creative activities can help develop transferable skills, improve confidence and give people a real sense of achievement. Individuals can build friendships in a safe, supportive environment enabling them to become more connected to their community. Their programme of workshops and activities is varied and expanding, as they work and consult with their clients to develop a programme that reflects their needs. They currently offer the following workshops: Pottery Woodcraft Creative Activities Gardening Cookery Memories Workshops Obviously all this costs money, so if you’re planning a charity event in the future then maybe the valuable work that Heads Up do is something you’d consider supporting. For more information, phone (01749) 670667 head to www.headsupsomerset.org or email the team on info@headsupsomerset.org.uk.

See Life changing to the way you want it to be…
My dream, my vision - is to help people to be the best version of themselves. To help them to break through the barriers of whom they think they “should” be and break free from the old behaviours that no longer serve a purpose. Most of us live the life of who we think we should be, more than the person we want to be. So, if there were no barriers, that anything is possible, what would that be for you? What life would you lead? If you are interested in learning more about how to be the best possible you, then get in touch to start your journey. Dare to be you!!

A NEW RECORD STORE FOR STREET
G
iven that we’re all now apparently downloading and streaming music instead of buying physical copies, the rise in popularity of vinyl music might be considered by some to be surprising. Not us though, as there’s nothing quite like buying a physical record or CD and reading through the sleeve notes while you’re playing it through for the first time. Shiftys, which opens on April 1, promises to be a fantastic shop for all music lovers. The owner, Chris Sheldon, is planning to stock vintage vinyl, new releases, collectables and also music memorabilia. He’ll also have bargain bins for the DJs, decks set up for listening and professional vinyl cleaning. Chris grew up in Somerset and went to school in Street. He is, unsurprisingly a devoted music collector – which is a habit he picked up from his father – and has
also been a professional music producer for the past 11 years. Basic mixing down and track mastering will be another service Chris is able to offer. For more information on Shiftys, check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ shiftyscollectables or their website at www.shiftys.org – which is currently in development.
You’ll find Shiftys between Ponny’s and Exclusive Tattoos on the High Street.

A Walk to Dundon Beacon
It’s time to get the wellies out again!
Y
ou can park on street hill near the Youth Hostel, or walk there from Street if you are feeling energetic. Head toward Marshall’s Elm, and take the narrow road (Pages Lane) on the right just before the crossroads. Walk all the way down past Ivythorn manor and take the footpath across the field ahead, following the hedge to your left. Crossing stiles as you find them, the path emerges into Hurst Drove. At the crossroads, walk straight on into Peak Lane. The turning on the right at the top of the hill leads to St Andrew’s Church, which boasts a very impressive ancient Yew tree in the graveyard. Before that, there is a very sharp left-hand turn called School Lane; proceed along here and up the track on the right past the gate (don’t cross any stiles). Take the small footpath on the left just after the ‘nature reserve’ sign. Continuing around the hill, you eventually start to walk up some steps and come to a shady clearing with a much-repaired rope swing. If you look back before leaving the space, you will see a face in a tree trunk. This, according to the locals, is a representation of Michael Eavis, and if you dance naked round

the tree on April the first he will grant you a Glastonbury festival ticket. Apparently. Ahem. At the top of the hill is one of those odd metal stiles, pull the gates apart and step through the gap. You have now arrived at Dundon Beacon nature reserve, Iron Age hill fort, and a good place for a picnic on a sunny day. The path in front goes across the reserve to the track leading back down to School Lane. Just before the gate there is a concrete water trough, close to which is part of a fallen tree trunk covered in toadstools. I was told to look out for the ‘fun guy’ on this log, but sadly he wasn’t there when I walked past. There is an alternative route back from Hurst Drove; it’s marked on the map, and worth taking if the starlings are around as they congregate en masse in the cattle sheds. Article and photograph by John Fleming
Locals say this is (ahem) Michael Eavis!
