n the last month we’ve has a mini heatwave, The Godney Gathering and a massive amount of gigs, fetes, fairs, coffee mornings and all manner of other get togethers. It’s been a busy few weeks. What strikes me more and more is what a motivated bunch you all are. There’s not a day that goes by without something interesting and fun going on in Street, Glastonbury or Wells, and we’re doing our best to cover as many of them as possible. Nothing proves this more than the amount of excellent entertainment that’s been organised for the local kids during the holidays – from the Scrapstore, to Off the Streets and the new soft play centre in Wells, it’s impossible to get bored this month. ff the Streets, a week of workshop and activities for the youth of Glastonbury and the surrounding area, is back again for its third year. Run by Glastonbury-based charity Children’s World, the week of workshops run from August 8-13. New workshops for this year include Parcour, Drama, Science and Flight and an evening for the
older youth run by the South West Bass crew at the Red Brick Building. Old favourites like Cookery and the Flash Mob will also be reappearing. Also new for this year is a number of workshops for under 7s. These include a Wildlife Encounter with Secret World, a farm day at Paddington Farm, Drama and Storytelling, Adventures in Science, and Boogie Bum Bums! Charity Director Paddy Hill says: “Off the Streets is becoming increasingly popular each year, and this year the workshops are all filling up quite quickly. We recommend people book as soon as possible to ensure a place.” Details of all the workshops and events and how to book can be found on the Children’s World web site at www.childrensworldcharity.org (follow the links for Off the Streets). You can also find details on Facebook by searching ‘Off the Streets’.

Strummerjam is heading our way this August. Jam-packed with a stellar line up which sees the likes of Missy Edwards, Stone Cold Fiction and David Lunas take to the stage to raise money for Glastonbury FM and The Red Brick Building. It is presented by the Joe Strummer foundation and it promises to be an evening of fantastic music. The entry price has been suggested at £4 and August 20th is the date – kicking off at 6pm! Rock Against Cancer is another important event you should be heading to this August. Square One, Syren City and (In Brackets) are among the artists heading over to The Victoria Club in Street on August 13th as part of the charity event. It starts at 2pm right up until 11pm. A day full of a mixture of musicians that will surely keep you entertained. Now the dust is settling on another year of Godney Gathering, I have to give another shout out to the man that is Kane Greenhalgh. Dance isn’t usually my sort of thing but this guy is so talented I get drawn in every time. His set at Godney had everyone on his channel, it was simply phenomenal. I can see him go far, such an incredible DJ. Georgie Robbins

heddar Ales have hit the ripe old age of 10 this year, and to celebrate they’re having a blowout beer festival at their brewery in Draycott Farm, Cheddar. The one-day festival is split into two events, with four bands playing in the afternoon – local band The Drystones are headlining – and three top-quality acts performing in the evening, ending with a blistering set from The John Fairhurst Band. As well as music, there will be plenty of food and children’s entertainment, and Cheddar Ales will be launching a very special 10th anniversary beer at the event itself! If all that wets your whistle, then head to www. cheddarales.co.uk for more information and to book tickets. If you’re feeling lucky though then why not enter our competition? We’ve got four tickets to give away for the evening session, and all you have to do to stand a change of winning is send an email to the editor on dean@ super8media.co.uk with the subject line ‘Cheddar Ales Competition’. We’ll then pick one winner at random. Good luck!

TIME TO GET CRAFTY Diverse craft fair comes to Walton
O It all started with Jaws. “That was the first film I watched, and it stopped me swimming in the sea for 30 years,” said Andy Cockerill, presenter of GFM radio’s Movie Mash-up Show. Now he watches four movies a week, reads Empire film magazine and listens to film podcasts to help him compile his GFM show, which broadcasts from 6-7pm on Thursdays and is repeated on Fridays 2-3pm. Andy is a software engineer who works from home in Glastonbury, and first featured on GFM when his Americana folk group The Outsiders was invited to play on Ian Liversidge’s Thursday Live show. After the band dissolved, Andy decided to pursue his long-held ambition to host a cinema programme on radio. “GFM gave me the free training and we did some test broadcasts before launching Movie Mash-Up in 2014,” said Andy. Andy features some blockbusters on his show but aims it more at people who enjoy film but don’t get to a cinema as often as they would like. “My favourite film is The Shawshank Redemption but I would love to hear what is yours and which films you recommend,” he said. “Contact me through Glastonbury FM’s Facebook page or glastonburyfm. co.uk.”

SOFT PLAY CENTRE OPENS IN WELLS
W
e recently had the chance to take a closer look around The Square soft play centre – which is to be found in the old EMI building on Priory Road, Wells – and are happy to report that it looks amazing. More than just a soft play centre though, The Square serves a fine cup of coffee and has a wide range of healthy and tasty food options at reasonable
prices. It’s the ideal place to meet up with other parents with young kids, as you can relax and grab something to eat or drink, safe in the knowledge that your kids are having a brilliant time! The Square is made up of two areas: the Toddler area for under-3s and the main area for 3-12 year olds, and features a wide selection of things to climb over, through and under. And it’s also the ideal place to book out if you have a kids’ birthday coming up, as you can just roll up, let the kids go crazy and let Steve and his staff do all the hard work for you! “I simply wanted to create the sort of soft play centre that I’d love to visit with my own son,” says Steve.” But don’t just take our word for it. The Square’s Facebook page is already proving very popular, and they’ve already got around 50 glowing reviews from very satisfied customers.

Benefits of Sports Massage
Sports massage isn’t just for people who train. We all live busy lives and put demands on our bodies, and stress can build up from our daily routines. Tension can often create pain. Everybody knows that they will benefit from a massage but do you know how important it is for your overall health? A massage will invigorate tired, aching or injured muscles and help rid the body of toxins and waste. It also reduces stress and can even enhance metabolism and circulation.

Fancy a Workout? It’s less than four miles, but there’s a lot of climbing!
T
here is a bus service to the Tor in the summer months, leaving from Glastonbury Town Hall. However, if you are feeling particularly energetic, you can do a circular walk from the town. Starting at the Market Cross, walk up the High Street and turn right into Chilkwell Street. Take the second turning on the left, Dod Lane, and follow the signs to the Tor – perhaps spinning the Tibetan Prayer Wheels as you walk past the Ashram. Go through the gate into Bushy Coombe. Those of you who follow my walks might remember this route, as it was the start of a walk to Gog and Magog in a previous issue of The Basis. Bushy Coombe is registered as a nature reserve, and at the top of the hill, the land to your left is where some of Glastonbury’s May Day celebrations take place. Arriving in Bulwarks Lane, go straight on. When you reach the left-hand bend, go through the kissing gate on the corner. Two stiles later you will arrive in Well House Lane. Turn left, so that the

Tor is on your right. The path is about 300 yards up the road on the right-hand side. Having reached St Michael’s Tower on the summit, you can treat yourselves to a well-earned rest as you enjoy the views – and look out for the kestrels! You will be able to read about the history of the Tor and the execution of Richard Whiting, the last Abbot of Glastonbury, on the plaque inside the Tower. Make your way down the hill on the other path, to emerge at the bottom of Well House lane. At this point, you could make a small detour and turn left to the springs. The red spring is on the left and the white spring is on the right – both produce very drinkable water, so take your pick. Having refreshed yourselves, go back down to the main road (A361) and turn right. At the mini roundabout, turn left and walk on the right-hand pavement – the Rural Life Museum is to your left. Stay on the right-hand side of the road, turning right at the bend to go down Fisher’s Hill past Abbey Park. The town is straight ahead.

LOCAL HERO
MIKE DANIELLS
We caught up with the man behind The Godney Gathering on one of his rare quiet moments to find out more about the chief Gatherer…
T
he Basis office recently tried to organise a family event, which included hiring a caterer and booking a band, and we cannot begin to explain the amount of stress and panic just a relatively simple event like that caused, so we can’t imagine how it must be to organise an entire festival! Mike and Sue Daniels had organised music events for some years before they got the idea for The Godney Gathering. Born and bred in Street, Mike grew up as a member of the Boys Brigade and the Avalon Marching Band – Mike and Sue were three times the British National and League Marching Band Champions, as well as World Gold Medallists. It was in 2011 that he launched The Godney Gathering on the world though, and it’s been a yearly event since then, helping to support local causes and also local talent. “We wanted to produce something for local groups and, more importantly, local musicians. It’s hard for local bands to get festival gigs, so we wanted to give them a place to show off their talent!” In the five years since it started, The Godney Gathering has risen in popularity to become one of the best one-day, family-friendly festivals in the country. But Mike is very keen to stress that the Gathering is small and perfectly formed, with no plans to expand. “We know what we can do and we do it very well. A one-day festival is more accessible and affordable for everyone.” And if people do want to make a weekend of it then they can always camp next door at the Garslade Farm camp site, which many of the Gatherers (as they’re commonly known) do.

The man himself on the site of The Godney Gathering festival. As if that wasn’t enough to keep Mike busy, he’s also heavily involved in the local carnival scene, and has created some of the most memorable and original entries they’ve ever seen. From ‘Supermike’ to ‘The Chair’ (which was modelled on an actual American execution chair) to ‘Sister Michael’ (see below), it’s clear that Mike’s talents, energy and passion for creativity have no limits. Mr. Daniells, we salute you.
Sister Michael was a highlight of last year’s carnival.

Spencer Cox (left) with the other members of September Son
O
ne part of the brilliant local Southern Rockers band September Son, Spencer Cox is a local music legend with the heart of a soul man and the talent to draw you in and then keep you hooked until the guitars are unplugged and the landlord is thinking about locking up. He is a classic wordsmith with the charm to convey the simplest of things in a meaningful manner, and the fact that the music that’s combined with his words is terminally catchy too can only be a good thing. A true artist through and through, Spencer spends most of his time

developing his craft and influencing others, and is now part of the new and exciting Sunday Sessions event at The Railway Inn at Ashcott Corner. Held every couple of weeks, Sunday Sessions showcases some of the best local talent while having a few beverages and a good ol’ laugh. But it’s mostly with September Son that you’ll see Spencer, and the band play at various venues across the South West. You can check them out on Facebook, and make sure you keep up to date with their upcoming gigs, as they’re not to be missed. Georgie Robbins
