Each issue is packed with local information guaranteed to give you plenty to do with your free time. The Basis is very much a community magazine, which means that if you have a story you’d like included in a future issue or would like to write a piece for the magazine, then we’d love to hear from you. S
o the good news is that the summer holidays are finally here, and kids have got six weeks of fun to look forward to! If you’re a parent struggling to crowbar them off the PlayStation though, the bad news is that it can be tricky to find things to keep them entertained. But there’s a bit more good news, as we’ve got a feature in this very magazine that’s packed with over 120 things for families and kids to do. We’ve tried to find things that are reasonably priced, too. Anything else? Why, yes. We find out more about Shepton Mallet Prison, the guy behind the House of El events at the Bocabar, and a closer look at the highly anticipated Children’s Festival. Enjoy!

Well that’s Godney over with for another year, and what a cracking day it was, too. It was the first year we had an interview booth, and it was also the first time we ever interviewed with this set up. It was great fun. We’ll be doing it all again at this September’s Music Expo and Rock Against Cancer events, so look out for that. I would also like to give a massive shout out to Constructions Rocks for sponsoring our interview booth at Godney, it was greatly appreciated! Other events coming up soon… we have Ryan Webb and Friends coming to Wedmore Village Hall on September 21. It’s going to be a fantastic evening of music and tickets cost £5. Then, on August 31 at The King Arthur there’s the Summer’s End Showcase withLast One Home, Ham Legion, Lewis Poole and Zaranis. That is £4 entry, which is another absolute bargain for you!

ONE-DAY EVENT TO REPLACE CANCELLED FESTIVAL On Sunday, August 5, local promoter Live From The Living Room will host a one-day music event to replace the Sat in a Field festival, which was sadly cancelled at the end of June. The line-up reads like a who’s who of some of the best grassroots festival acts on the circuit. The day will kick off at 2pm with a set from GFM Songwriting Competition winner Maaike Siegerist, who will be followed by Tamsin Quin, Brian Stone, Paul Henshaw, Jake Martin, Doozer McDooze, Funke and The Two Tone baby, and Gaz Brookfield and the Company of Thieves. Not only is it rare to catch Gaz playing with a full backing band, but when he does, it’s normally at much bigger venues than the Bocabar, making this a gig definitely not to be missed. Tickets are on sale now from Eventbrite.co.uk for the bargain price of just £15, (£18 on the door) and

DON’T MISS THIS BUSINESS NETWORK BREAKFAST
F
or 15 years now, local businesses have been meeting over breakfast each Friday morning to grow their customer base, their order book and their income. It has been a remarkable success story, with over £5million worth of business being invoiced in those years, of which approximately £500,000 was in 2017 alone. All these businesses are members of the area’s most established business referral group, BNI (Business Network International), a group founded in America but with over 230,000 members worldwide. Over the years there have been many great success stories, from new start businesses launching successfully and now providing employment for local workers, to established businesses breaking into new markets – which can be both local and national. Unlike open networking events, BNI restrict involvement to one person per business category. When you go to a networking event and see your two biggest competitors sat at the next table it can be off-putting. BNI’s exclusivity provides a competitive edge, which is something they value very highly.

“Everyone looks out for each other, which is important when you start out in business,” says BNI Yeovil’s, Shelly Smit. “We know our business system works; we’re focused and track results. We especially hope to attract women in business to visit our new venue, Haynes International Motor Museum, with its excellent conference facilities.” You now have the opportunity to meet all the local BNI members at a Business Breakfast on Friday, September 14 at Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford, Yeovil BA22 7LH, as well as have a chance to look around the museum itself. You will find out how BNI members achieve such success without you incurring any further obligation. All you need to do is book in by emailing your details and any dietary requirements to paul.clegg@mac.com. Attend between 6.45am and 8.30am; bring your business cards and £15 for the breakfast. It’s an unmissable opportunity to focus on growing your business over the years ahead.

CRISPIN YEAR 7 TAKE PILGRIMAGE TO GLASTONBURY This year’s Glastonbury Pilgrimage took place on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th of July. All of Year 7 Mendip travelled on the first day, with the slightly smaller Quantock cohort on the second. Students all made the journey by foot from school, along the Pilgrims’Way, and dropping down Wearyall Hill to the town centre, led by school staff and Leofric, a living history guide from Glastonbury Abbey. As part of the day, students were welcomed into St John’s Church in Glastonbury, where Rev MacGeogh told them about the history of the building and the legends of the holy thorn. In the Abbey grounds, students were given guided tours of the Abbey ruins, investigating the many years of history and the lifestyle of the monastic community. They also participated in a fun and challenging session on Christian values delivered by Pastor Dylan from Street Harvest Church.
After a full and exciting day, students caught coaches back in time to Crispin for the end of the school day. The Glastonbury Pilgrimage is a special day of learning and reflection for all our students and is only made possible by the continued support of our amazing community links. I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has made this year another memorable event and look forward to continuing to work with you all next year.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST There’s a new business in Street! The Hare Inn Barbers shop recently opened on the High Street next to the HSBC bank, and offers a full, traditional barbershop service for gentlemen. Owned and run by Carl Binding, who’s been working as a barber in the local area now for over 10 years, the Hare Inn’s name comes from the fact that his grandparents and great grandparents were all in the pub trade, and Carl is replicating that pub vibe with Hare Inn Barbers, keeping it relaxed and friendly. Check them out on Facebook by searching for ‘Hare Inn Barbers’.

A PRISON BREAK
There are incredible events happening at Shepton Mallet Prison all-year round. In the first of our Prison features, we take a closer look at its gory history…
S
ome people hear History and Heritage and they ‘sit up’ and listen, they are fascinated by what has been, is this the same for everyone? On some level, yes, history incorporates so many areas how can it not? Shepton Mallet Prison is an attraction that has something for everyone. From the ex-officer guides sharing stories from years gone by to the buildings dating back to the 17th Century, this piece of ‘dark tourism’ in Shepton Mallet ticks the boxes for historical architecture, links to events of historical interest and stories of tragedy. Decommissioned in March 2013, Shepton Mallet Prison was the oldest working prison in the country. Originally built as a house of correction in 1610, the prison has a grim history. In the 17th and 18th Centuries, men, women and children would have been imprisoned together. Primitive sanitation led to regular outbreaks of gaol fever, venereal diseases and even death. Following any deaths within the house of correction, bodies were taken to an unconsecrated burial ground just outside the prison – the door in the wall on Frithfield lane still exists, as do nine unmarked graves within the grounds.
BASIS

The prison has a long history of executions. It was used by the American military during the Second World War, and the British Military during which time it housed the Kray Twins (it was here that they met Charlie Richardson!). It also housed over 300 tons of documents including the Domesday Book, Magna Carta, and the HMS Victory logbook at one point. In 2017 Jailhouse Tours took over the prison and opened its doors to the public, with guided and self-guided tours enabling visitors to take in the history of this fascinating building as well as learning about prison life. Other tours and activities at the prison include ghost tours, night tours, paranormal investigations, overnight sleepovers and escape rooms, educational tours and corporate events. Whether you’re interested in the ‘dark’ stories, the 17th Century architecture, treadwheel house (one of the only ones left in the country) or just want to know if a prison wing is ‘really like it looks on the TV’ then Shepton Mallet Prison is worth a visit. History and Heritage really can be for everyone. Take in the fascinating facts, experience this atmospheric building, walk in the footsteps of history and make some memories. www.jailhousetours.com.

SHEPTON’S FANTASTIC FREE ONEDAY SHOW FOR ALL THE FAMILY
I
t’s just a few weeks to go now until the MidSomerset Show, so we thought we’d give you a flavour of what you can expect. Returning once again will be the ever-popular Sheep Show, as well as a full range of trade stands, the South West Cheese Awards and the Somerset Cider Championships!
New for 2018 are new livestock classes and the Paws for Thought Dog Display team. The Mid-Somerset Show is a traditional one-day agricultural show with new breed-specific livestock classes including cattle, pigs and sheep. Our equestrian classes include heavy horses, driving, hunter classes and showjumping. While in other parts of the show you can see poultry, arts and crafts, flower show, floral art and classic cars. Something for everyone. As always, entry to the show remains free for pedestrians, and costs only £13 for parking – meaning it’s a great fun-filled value for money day out. For more information on this fantastic show, head to www.midsomersetshow.org.uk or contact the showroom office on 01749 938044.

The best in animal care, the best in client care disease. Collars are available to repel biting flies, and you should avoid wooded areas at dawn and dusk when sandflies are most active. If you’d like further advice on this topic, please feel free to give us a call on 01458 832972.

ncreasingly, many of us are choosing to enjoy holidays – in the UK or overseas – with our pets rather than leaving them at home. But what do you need to know about protecting your pet against illnesses that might not be present overseas? There are certain legal requirements when travelling – your pet must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, and they must be treated for tapeworms by a vet between 1 and 5 days before returning to the UK, and have this recorded in their passport. But there are other threats to your pets’ health, often carried by arthropod vectors such as ticks, that you may need to be aware of when travelling. There is no longer a legal requirement to treat your dog for ticks when travelling to and from Europe. However, we strongly advise that pets holidaying in Europe are protected from tick bites for the duration of their trip. The reason for this is that ticks can carry diseases that may affect your pet, such as babesiosis, anaplasmosis or ehyrlichiosis. If your pet acquires these illnesses, they can be very difficult to diagnose and in some cases almost impossible to completely cure, so effective protection is vital. In hotter areas in southern Europe, biting sandflies can carry Leishmania – a similar type of organism to malaria – which can be transmitted to dogs. Leishmaniasis in dogs can cause a variety of illnesses including skin disease, painful joint problems and potentially fatal kidney

I
f you haven’t heard of it by now (and you probably should have), House of El is a music event promotion company based in Glastonbury. They have had a string of successful events at the Bocabar club at the Red Brick Building, and they have some great events lined up for the rest of the year. We caught up with its founder, Jor-El Starborn (aka Starborn Se7en), for a quick Q&A to find out more about the House of El and its ambitious plans for the future… Who is the House of El and how long has it been going? I founded House of El myself three years ago, kind of by accident! I threw a birthday party at the Bocabar in June 2015, which I promoted as a public event, and it ended up being wall-to-wall packed! Getting the taste for promotion I then put on a second event the following August and I’ve not looked back since. What inspired you to set up House of El? Just the fact that there was nothing going on in and around the local area in terms of music entertainment for young adults. If you want to have a decent night out you have to go to Bristol or somewhere that’s even further afield. I really just wanted to create something for people who want to stay local, spend less money and enjoy really good music!
BASIS
THE
28
What is the goal behind what you are doing? I’m a strong believer in community, and the only way a community can flourish is if its residents continue to invest in it. With the closure of Envy and no other local establishments really offering late-night music entertainment, people are partying elsewhere which means that money is not being spent in the community. The Bocabar has a license until 1am, so I decided to base myself there and provide good music and good vibes for people. So House of El really is about plugging people back into the community, and getting money going into community projects such as the Red Brick Building, which is a fantastic place with loads to offer, but needs the support of the local people. My aim is to help rebuild the Glastonbury of 10 years ago with a flourishing music scene and positive vibes everywhere: Make Glastonbury Great Again!

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.
I
ncredibly, this is the 10th game in the F1 series, and it’s never looked in better shape. Codemasters have a wide selection of updates and improvements for the 2018 version of the game, including massive revisions to its Career mode and a simplified progression system with your car – where you develop its engine, chassis and aerodynamics. Classic cars will return, only this year they will include brand new ones, and new tracks mirror the 2018 championship, so the Circuit Paul Ricard and the Hockenheimring are in, and the Sepang International Circuit is most definitely out.
