RADIO TALK
After art school, Tess Lipin worked as a printer composing pages for the Telegraph magazine and ran her own restaurant for several years before retraining in horticulture. Now she presents two monthly programmes on the radio station. Garden Gurus, which you may have guessed is about gardens and gardening, while Twin Tracks focuses on Somerset’s ecology and landscape. “I swear I thought of the name Twin Tracks before any other broadcaster,” said Tess with a smile. But GFM is a different thing to the BBC. Programmes on community radio are local and offer something the BBC and commercial stations cannot. Part of community radio’s charm is that it is not always slick.” Tess was encouraged to become a GFM presenter about eight years ago by Las Latty, who did a jazz music programme for the station. “GFM has given me much more confidence,” said Tess, “and we would welcome more women presenters. “Local radio is one of the cleverest ways of bringing together the different elements in a community, giving you the chance to chat to interesting people you would not otherwise have the chance to meet. I have also learnt new skills on the technical side.” If you are interested in getting involved in your local radio station email admin@ glastonburyfm.org.uk. There are lots of other opportunities besides presenting a programme.

MUSIC TALK
The exciting news this month is that there is a new band in town, and they go by the name of One Eye Open. As a band they are literally days old; as musicians, they are extremely talented, and it is exciting to see the combination of Sherrie, Colin and Jamie. As it’s early days, it’s tough to say in which direction they are going, however knowing them all separately we are guaranteed something special. Following the success of this year’s Rock Against Cancer event at the Victoria Field Social Club, the good news is that the organisers are already putting next year’s event in motion. If you would like to be considered for a slot at this incredible event then contact Max James through the Rock Against Cancer Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ RockAgainstCancerSomerset. He also has his hands in other music projects in the area, so if you are looking for performing opportunities then he is your guy. Lastly, I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas. Thank you for reading my column each month. I hope to continue through to next year with more and more exciting news! Georgie Robbins

LOCAL HERO
LIZ LEYSHON
She’s run the Strode Theatre for the past 23 years, but how well do you know its Manager, Liz Leyshon?
December 2016
From the age of four she went to the Hindhayes primary school – in fact, she used to get the school bus on her own aged four, and was taken in by one of the teachers. The bright lights of London pulled Liz away for a while, and during her time in the city she worked for a press agency and was also the PA for the writer, Rebecca West. She moved back to Somerset in 1980, and began work at the Theatre as a part-time Clerical Assistant. Liz became the Theatre Manager in 1993, but said at the time that she’d just do the job for a couple of years! During that time she’s been lucky enough to meet a string of interesting and delightful stars, but still believes that the actor Sir John Mills was the nicest. “He was the most charming man I’ve ever met,” says Liz. After so long working at the Theatre, Liz will obviously leave with a lot of great memories. “The thing that makes it worthwhile are the people. We try to make it as much fun as possible to work here,” she says. “Street has been good to me. I’ve had all these mad ideas, but people just go with it!” Liz has got plenty of plans for the future though, and plans to get involved in local politics, and may continue working on a history of Clarks and Street.

W
e’re privileged in the area to have such a superb theatre as the Strode. Opened in 1963, it’s delighted audiences with a staggering selection of plays, film, musicals and talks. From the latest blockbuster to the local pantomime, there’s a varied and interesting selection always playing throughout the year. All of this couldn’t be achieved without a dedicated team of staff, and heading the list is the Theatre Manager, Liz Leyshon, who’s retiring from the job next April after working at the Theatre for 37 years. We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to ask Liz about her time at the Theatre and also her connection to the area. It turns out that Liz is very much a local, as her parents moved to Glastonbury in the 1950s and owned a shop at the top of the High Street. Liz’s mother was a designer and her father owned a printworks, so the shop was a mixture of things that Liz’s mother designed and her father printed. The shop was well-known in the town during the 1970s, as it was the one covered with paintings of flowers!

GAME ON!
I
f you want to try out the latest games, or just want somewhere safe to drop off the kids while you go shopping in Clarks Village, then you really need to check out the The Games Pod mobile gaming booth. It was at Clarks Village for the halfterm holidays, and will be back every weekend in December, as well as most of the Christmas holidays – you’ll find it parked up outside Red 5. The Games Pod is a state-of-the-art gaming setup, kitted out with the latest consoles and games, including the brand-new PlayStation VR, and three huge TVs and a full force feedback steering wheel set up for driving simulations. Whatever age you are, The Games Pod costs just £3 for 15 minutes and £5 for 30 minutes. If you want to check out the PlayStation VR (and you really should, as it’s amazing!) then that costs just £5 for 15 minutes. Better still though, if you take along a copy of this magazine or just cut out the voucher here, then you’ll get 10% off the price of a half-hour or VR session – so either will cost just £4.50.

A Walk to Dundon Beacon
It’s time to get the wellies out again!
Y
ou can park on street hill near the Youth Hostel, or walk there from Street if you are feeling energetic. Head toward Marshall’s Elm, and take the narrow road (Pages Lane) on the right just before the crossroads. Walk all the way down past Ivythorn manor and take the footpath across the field ahead, following the hedge to your left. Crossing stiles as you find them, the path emerges into Hurst Drove. At the crossroads, walk straight on into Peak Lane. The turning on the right at the top of the hill leads to St Andrew’s Church, which boasts a very impressive ancient Yew tree in the graveyard. Before that, there is a very sharp left-hand turn called School Lane; proceed along here and up the track on the right past the gate (don’t cross any stiles). Take the small footpath on the left just after the ‘nature reserve’ sign. Continuing around the hill, you eventually start to walk up some steps and come to a shady clearing with a much-repaired rope swing. If you look back before leaving the space, you will see a face in a tree trunk. This, according to the locals, is a representation of Michael Eavis, and if you dance naked round

the tree on April the first he will grant you a Glastonbury festival ticket. Apparently. Ahem. At the top of the hill is one of those odd metal stiles, pull the gates apart and step through the gap. You have now arrived at Dundon Beacon nature reserve, Iron Age hill fort, and a good place for a picnic on a sunny day. The path in front goes across the reserve to the track leading back down to School Lane. Just before the gate there is a concrete water trough, close to which is part of a fallen tree trunk covered in toadstools. I was told to look out for the ‘fun guy’ on this log, but sadly he wasn’t there when I walked past. There is an alternative route back from Hurst Drove; it’s marked on the map, and worth taking if the starlings are around as they congregate en masse in the cattle sheds. Locals say this is (ahem) Michael Eavis!

GET INVOLVED WITH YEAST!
T
he Yeast Scrapstore is a community project which is a haven for upcycled and recycled crafts. We have a small team of dedicated volunteers who keep our doors open, and we are seeking to grow this team. We offer a variety of arts and crafts courses and would love to offer more as the team grows. If you have a spare couple of hours and would like to get involved we would love to hear from you. It’s a great way to learn some interesting new skills and also meet some lovely people at the same time. At the moment we are in the exciting position of purchasing our building, and this will offer us some really exciting new opportunities, including a garden, fully fitted kitchen and also a meeting room, too. Obviously all these things need funding so we are also looking for people who might be interested in supporting us financially as we enter the new phase
of our community project. Whatever you’d like to talk to us about, you can reach us on the contact details in the advert below. Finally, the team would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and blessed new year.

t’s impossible to live in the area and not have heard of the Wells Trading Post. Expertly manned (or should that be ‘personed’?) by owners Robin and Tanith, it’s an incredible treasure trove of antique furniture, clothes, trinkets and other wonders. If you’re looking for a stocking filler or small item for a loved one, then they have a range of glass cabinets that have been rented out to local traders that are full of stunning gems. Also, they’ve recently revamped their vinyl selection, so if you’re in the market for some records, then we recommend you pop over to take a look – there’s everything from classic albums to the cheesiest 80s pop compilations (which we all secretly love, right?) and everything in-between. We suggest a visit at your earliest convenience, and remember to tell them we sent you.

Gary Stringer
A very good year 2015 has been one of the best years for Reef for years. They’ve had a string of successful gigs, support slots for Coldplay at Wembley in June, and they released a stunning new single in March, How I Got Over, which was debuted on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2. It was also the first single with their new guitarist, Jesse Wood – the son of Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood. “We auditioned around eight new guitarists when Kenwyn left, but it was clear from the start with Jesse that it just worked straight away.”
December 2016
Despite living in London for a number of years, Gary has settled once again in Somerset. We wondered what brought him back to the area. “I think it’s down to the fact that I have a family now, and I want them to have the same sorts of things that I did growing up. Both my kids were born in London but when my eldest got to school age I thought why not see if we can skip back to Somerset and see how it goes. I’ve still got a place in London, and I love going up there, but Somerset has aways been home.” So what can those who’ve already bought a ticket expect from the Glastonbury gigs? “Everything, really. We’ll do a party set, as it’s that time of the year. It’ll be a real end-of-year blowout, and we hope to get everyone up and dancing! We’re a rock ‘n’ roll band, so we just want to connect with people and get them moving. There’s a good chance that those two nights could be really special.” Gary informed us that, at the time of going to print, there were still a few tickets available for one of the gigs, and they’re only available through Jaywalk Guitars in Street. So if you fancy a place at what’s sure to be one of the best local gigs this year then pop by the shop or give them a ring on 01458 441141.

A
s unbelievable as it sounds, Reef have never played a concert in their home town. All that’s about to change though, as Glastonbury’s own are playing two gigs at the Town Hall on December 16 and 17. “The last time I played in Glastonbury was in the Assembly Rooms when I was about 17,” says Gary when we spoke to him recently. “We’ve obviously played at the Glastonbury Festival a number of times, though. Last year we played at William’s Green there, and I have to say that it was one of the most special gigs I’d ever done.”

New Year Resolutions – Tips to Success
As the new year kicks in, around 50% of people will make a commitment to making a positive change in their life. The most common being to lose weight, start exercise or give up smoking. The new year makes us stop, reflect and be mindful. According to national surveys, you are more likely to succeed for over six months if you start with a New Year’s resolution.
Tips to succeed
1 Control your environment. Make positive changes while your will power is strong so you’re covered when your will power slips. Sign up for a block of classes instead of just one. Prepare good food and leave it in the fridge instead of snacking. Move your running shoes to the front door. 2 Don’t beat yourself up if you slip. You can just pick up where you left off, and it will make you stronger. 3 Treat your will power as a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. 4 Reward yourself for succeeding. 5 Set small achievable goals – take one day at a time. 6 Surround yourself with like-minded people. We are offering a £10 voucher towards Personal Training or Sports massage. Just cut out the voucher below, or bring the magazine into the Studio, to claim your £10 off!
