ow, what a month! Firstly, a big welcome to all our new readers in Wells and Shepton, and thank you so much for the positive feedback you sent us. We’re really pleased that you like the magazine, and we look forward to keeping you entertained over the coming months and years. As this is the busiest time of the year, we’ve got our biggestever Event Guide for you to check out. Finding all the events going on from now until the New Year wasn’t easy, but we think we’ve captured most of them. And we like to think there really is something there for everyone, regardless of what they fancy doing. Finally, it just leaves us to say that we really hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and an amazing New Year. We’ve got a funny feeling that 2018 is going to be a bit of a corker, so we’ll see you next year with an even bigger and better The Basis…

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAYRE!
Shepton Mallet gets its own Victorian Fayre this Christmas
T
here really is no shortage of stunning Christmas events this year, and one that shouldn’t be missed is the Victorian Fayre in Shepton Mallet. We asked the organiser, Nick Reader, for a few words on what we can expect, and here’s what he kindly sent us… “Come one, come all to the Shepton Mallet Victorian Christmas Street Fayre, running from 1pm-6pm on Sunday, December 17 2017 at the Market Cross and Town Street. Take part in festive family fun for all ages, with a Victorian costume competition, vintage fayre organ, a working blacksmith’s forge and traditional Victorian playground. Fayregoers can also enjoy Christmas carols by a local choir and hot food, including roasted turkey dinner, mince pies, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.
A variety of new and regular stalls will also be offering Christmassy treats and trinkets where you will be sure to find the perfect gift.”
GLASTONBURY PHOTOGRAPHER LAUNCHES ‘BE A SANTA’ CAMPAIGN Neil Bremner, a photographer with a studio in Glastonbury, has launched the ‘Be a Santa’ campaign, designed to give two people a surprise gift this Christmas. If you know anyone who’s had a tough time recently and deserves a bit of a treat in the shape of a portfolio of photos from a professional photographer, then you can nominate them by emailing Neil on info@madeportraits. com, detailing who you would like to nominate and why. Neil will then pick two winners on Christmas Day and notify them that they’ve won a photoshoot consisting of an A4 print and 10 digital images at Neil’s Made Portraits studio. The Be a Santa campaign was launched on World Kindness Day (November 13), and nominations can be submitted up until December 23.

There are two Christmas hampers waiting to be won in Street! Touts Pharmacy in the High Street has kindly offered again this year to display the prizes for Street Parish Council’s Shop Window Competition. Theo the Christmas ichthyosaur is hidden in shop windows up and down the High Street. There are entry forms in many shops, the library and Street Parish Rooms, and to be in with a chance of winning a hamper, entrants must write down in which shops Theo can be found in. The competition starts on December 2 and closes on December 18. As a change from previous years, there will be two prize draws: one for fully completed and correct forms, and one for forms that have shown effort but may not be fully completed. Good luck, and merry Christmas! Nina Swift

ARE YOU CONSIDERING CRISPIN? “I work with nutters,”says GFM presenter Steve Lee, but he is not talking about colleagues at the community radio station. Steve means he is an artisan nut roaster at an upmarket West Pennard food producer whose clients include Harrods. Called Steve Lee’s Drive Thru, his show blends music and chat with humour and a dash of poetry. “It is eclectic, esoteric and deals with issues that affect us locally,”says Steve, who has been running the show for five years. “I like the freedom GFM gives its presenters to speak freely and raise issues that matter.”They include Hinkley Point, health and the environment. “We must remember that we are looking after this space for future generations, but the powers that be are not doing enough to look after the planet.” Steve likes acid rock music from the late 60s/ early 70s, as well as current singer songwriters. “The main thing is to offer an alternative narrative to that offered by the national media and help the underdog,”says Steve. Steve Lee’s Drive Thru broadcasts live on Wednesdays from 5-7pm on 107.1 FM and glastonburyfm.co.uk online, then repeated on Sundays 4-6pm. Philip Welch

Raucous music & swampgrass revelry at local nightspot Annual Celebrations Threaten Community
By A. De Gooder
Once more our peaceful town is under threat from the demon drink, loud blues music and a complimentary finger buffet late in the evening. With Doors opening at 8pm and not closing until god knows when, the New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Hawthorns, Northload street Glastonbury will be the talk of the town for at least another year. Tickets are £10 and are on sale NOW Known sinners and party types Swampgrass (pictured above) will be providing “Entertainment” and “Grooves”. Dancing is to be expected. Be warned.
MARSH FIRES will be travelling all the way from Street to play at this wicked event. Expect original, groovy blues inflected rock, loose morals and drinking. Local bootlegger Steve Henderson (pictured far right) will surely be in attendance playing songs from his debut EP Silver Birch.
Can this man be stopped? Local “legitimate Business Man” and definitely not head of any crime families, Simon Sturt persists in inviting people of all backgrounds and creeds for what can only be described as a great vibe and relentless party atmosphere in his “establishment” The Hawthorns. For how long will our town have to endure this Fun?

LET THERE BE LIGHT!
An annual Christmas event in Shepton Mallet, the Lantern Festival is a great night out for all the family. Here’s how you can get involved
E
very year a dedicated group of people create a wide range of stunning lanterns in preparation for the Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival, which this year is taking place on Saturday, December 23. If you’ve never been to one of the previous festivals (this is the eighth one) then you really have missed out, as the parade of dozens of beautifully designed lanterns slowly winding their way through the town is a sight to behold. There is even a series of workshops running up to the festival where you can make your own lantern. In total there are six workshops on the weekends of December 3, 10 and 17. Running from 10am until 4pm on both the Saturday and Sunday, the workshops are held at The Paul Street Community Centre and the tuition is completely free. All you have to pay for is the materials, and basic lantern kits start at just £2 – all lanterns are made from tissue paper and willow. The 2017 Parade is going to be bigger than ever, with hot food and drink to keep the winter chills at bay. The Collett Park Cafe will stay open to serve hot chocolate, tea, coffee and snacks while all the lanterns gather in the park for the 6pm start. The Shepton Sings! Choir will be kicking off the proceedings and then, at
6.30 sharp, the drummers of Jamme de Samba will start the parade off and lead the procession, while the Little Big Horns make sure everyone makes their way around the park and then all the way through town to the Market Place. This year there will be a whole host of food and drink for sale while the bands keep playing, including mulled cider and wine, a BBQ, wood-fired pizza and roast chestnuts. Willmotts Transport are one of the new major sponsors, joining forces with Shepton Mallet Town Council and Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts to ensure that every year the Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival can light up our winter nights! The Last Post
T
he sad news this month was the one of our favourite shops in Wells, The Trading Post, is to close in the spring. If you’ve never been (and to be honest, we find that unlikely) then it’s a shop like no other. It stocks, among other things, vinyl, furniture, clothing, tools and Nazi mice (yes, really). Rounding up the whole bundle is the delightful pairing of Robin and Tanith Tothill (otherwise known as Mr and Mrs Post), the dynamic duo who’ve made Shopping in Wells a little bit cooler and more interesting for the last 20 years. We could go on and on about the shop, but we felt it would be more suitable to hand over to the Posts to sign off in their own inimitable style… “Some of you may have heard rumours on the grapevine that we are closing. This is true. There are many reasons, but the simple fact is the old place just isn’t earning its keep, and this is due to a variety of factors. The market has changed significantly, as when we opened 20 years there was no eBay, Gumtree, etc., and Facebook hadn’t been born. Now the competition is fierce! We have become more of a tourist attraction, but unfortunately compliments aren’t paying the bills and they aren’t going away. Within a few months of the dreaded development next door going up we will lose all parking in our end of West Street and will also be hemmed in by residential properties. When we opened the entire area was industrial. The final reason is Mrs Post’s health. Regulars will know about slipped discs, excruciating pain and regular migraines. Mr Post is convinced they are stress related, and he’s right. So it’s with a heavy heart but a terrific sense of relief and excitement that we have made the decision to close the doors on March 31. We fully intend to remain in the trade we both love, so watch this space. Finally, it goes without saying, but thank you. Thank you all for all your support. We wouldn’t have managed 20 years without your custom, loyalty, laughs and company. We will not, however, miss hearing about your bum operations or ingrowing toenails. Here’s to what the future brings!” Thanks guys, and we all wish you the very best for the future.

THE WALKING DEAD – TELLTALE SERIES: COLLECTION
FROM: Warner Bros. FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One
I
f you haven’t yet experienced the joys of The Walking Dead game from Telltale, then you’re really in for a treat. Technically, it’s an adventure game with its roots firmly planted in the point-and-click titles of old, but it’s also so much more than that. A proper storyline that splinters off neatly from the TV show (there’s also a Michonne mini-series included here) and pulls you emotionally from the very start to the final stages And the fact that you’ve got all three seasons of the game plus extras and you’ve got a whole lot of game for your dollar. There’s some great titles released this month, but this is definitely the cream of the crop.
The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

MEN’S SHEDS ASSOCIATION
What is it? What do they do? And where do they meet? It’s time to find out more about the organisation that’s taken off in a massive way in Somerset
T
he Men’s Shed Association started off in Australia, but quickly spread around the world. In a nutshell, it’s a way for men to meet up, have a chat, learn new skills and just socialise with other men. Most towns now have their own group, and the Heads Up charity in Wells is in the process of setting one up themselves, thanks to a grant donation from the Masonic Community Fund. They’re aiming to get it finished by the spring of 2018, and are hoping to create an environment for men to work on small projects such as furniture recycling, woodworking, etc. They are in need of tools though, so if you have anything you can donate, please do drop them a line on 01749 670667 or email them on info@headsupsomerset.org.uk.
Dawn of the shed Street have been holding their own Men’s Shed group for some time. The Street Shedders are actively trying to create a genial space in Street where men can come together around practical tasks, such as woodworking, and also have a tea or coffee, meet others and have a chat. They meet at Unit 10 in The Tanyard on Tuesdays (9am-1pm) and Thursdays (12.30-4.30pm). They are now members of the Shape Mendip lottery (www.shapemendiplottery.co.uk), which raises funds for charities and organisations in the Mendip area. When you buy a ticket from their page on the Shape website, the Street Men’s Shed will get 50% and you get a chance to win up to £25,000.
If you think that this might be for you then please come along at the times mentioned, or contact Brian Bastable on brianbastable9@aol.com for details and dates. You can also check us out on our website at www.streetmensshed.btck.co.uk. More information about Men’s Sheds in the Mendip area can be found on the Men’s Sheds Association UK website at www.menssheds.org.uk.

Keeping Your Pet Safe at Christmas Chocolate One of the
Grapes, Raisins and Currants Lots of Christmas treats
are full of raisins – dried grapes. These can make dogs seriously ill with acute kidney failure. We don’t really know why grapes and raisins are toxic, sometimes even in very small amounts, so keep all forms safely stored away.
Onions and Garlic can cause the destruction of red blood cells (anaemia), though generally only in very large quantities.
Bones and Scraps Leftover Christmas dinner might seem like a lovely treat for your pet, but be careful. Cooked poultry bones easily splinter into sharp fragments, and fatty leftovers can trigger acute pancreatitis. A little lean turkey meat should be fine, but hold the skin and gravy! Tinsel, Baubles and Lights Shiny tinsel can be
irresistible to cats and kittens, but if ingested can cause severe intestinal damage. Dogs have been known to ingest glass baubles (we don’t know why either!), and chewing on electrical cords can obviously cause electrocution.

A Walk from Godney to Glastonbury via Meare

Article and photographs by John Fleming
Grab a pint and lunch at the Sheppey, then head off on this lovely walk
S
tart from the Sheppy Inn in Godney. The walk is one way, so get a lift there if you don’t want to walk all the way back! From the pub, turn left and go into the cul-desac at the corner. At the T-junction, turn left. When you come to a farm entrance on the right (by a black corrugated iron barn), go through the gate and turn right. Follow the farm track until it emerges into a field, then keep going straight ahead with a hedge to your right. As you walk, look across to your left. This whole area used to be Meare Pool, the large freshwater lake from which Meare derived its name. Arriving at Division Rhine, there is a World War II pillbox on your right. Walk along the right-hand river bank, cross the bridge, go through the gate, and proceed with the small rhine to your right until you reach the River Brue. Turn left, and keep on the left of the Brue past the distinctive Meare Bridge, and Rectory Orchard on the opposite bank. Now make sure that you cross the next bridge. Just before the main road there is a kissing gate on the right, the path takes you to the Abbot’s Fish House (see image to the right). The Abbot’s Fish House was built in the 1330s to house the Abbey official in charge of fishery. Meare Pool provided an abundance of pike, bream, tench, roach and eels. There would have been a channel to

the lake leading from a thatched boat house just to the right of the main building, and a ‘pretty’ house on the far side of the field for the fishermen to drink in. If you want to go inside the Fish House, the keyholder’s contact details are on the door. Now backtrack, re-cross the River Brue, walk along the left-hand bank of the river and keep going until you reach the Godney road. As you approach Glastonbury, the way is completely blocked by a chicken coop, but the path in fact goes through it, just make sure you close the gates behind you.
