WELCOME! FEBRUARY 2017 #129

C

old enough for you? As we’re caught up in Winter’s icy grip, it’s worth remembering that there’s plenty of hot stuff to look forward to! This month we’ve got the brilliant Glastonbury Calling one-day festival – and you can find out all about the line-up by turning to page 22 now. But there’s more than that. We’ve got the run down on this year’s Glastonbury Gathering, and news on the Glastonbury Fringe, too – which kicks off with a musical extravaganza at the Glastonbury Abbey in June. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got a bulging news section, four pages of local events and even space for a few features, too! Enjoy, and see you next month.

BIG PLANS FOR 2017’S GLASTONBURY FRINGE

The Glastonbury Fringe kicks off in June with an unmissable launch event

February 2017

The Glastonbury Fringe is growing every year, and features a wide range of events on the 13 days it’s on. Music is a big part of that, but there are also plays, workshops, markets, competitions, poetry, comedy and spiritual events, too. The Fringe seeks to highlight just how diverse the culture in Glastonbury is, so they want events of all types during the Fringe. There’s still plenty of time to submit an event, too. If you’re thinking of putting something on during the Fringe, which runs from June 9-21 then head to the Fringe website at www.glastonbury-fringe.org.uk and sign up. The Fringe site is also the place to find out the latest news and events, as well as get your tickets for the stunning launch event.

BASIS 05

THE

T

he Glastonbury Fringe is celebrating its sixth year in 2017 by hosting its biggest launch event yet. On June 9 at the worldfamous Glastonbury Abbey, Fringe 2017 will launch in spectacular style dancing into the night with the amazing 3 Daft Monkeys, Tankus The Henge, Swampgrass and Lazy Daze. Doors open at 5.30pm and tickets are just £10 in advance or £15 on the door (subject to availability). 3 Daft Monkeys and Tankus The Henge are mainstays of the UK festival circuit, as well as performing throughout the UK and Europe all-year round. Swampgrass bring high energy R&B and swing to the show while Lazy Daze kick off proceedings with their particular brand of melodic folk.

RADIO TALK

Allan Trinder has welcomed well over 1,000 guests on his GFM radio show. Not all at once, but since he launched his Community Show in 2009, shortly after Ofcom gave GFM a licence to broadcast 24/7. “The programme is a community newspaper on air,”explained Allan, who was a teacher for 18 years, then worked for 15 in the voluntary sector. “It gives local people the oxygen of publicity to promote what they are doing, have their say, get others involved and make new contacts.” Allan, who epitomises the friendliness and informality of GFM itself, cut his broadcasting teeth on hospital radio and reporting rugby matches. Now he is a director of the station with more that 400 editions of the Community Show under his belt. “GFM aims to make a difference but it is also great fun. Broadcasting has given me extra confidence and allowed me to meet so many fabulous people.” Allan, who says he is blessed with “wonderful wife Monica and two children”, wants to hear from people interested in taking part on the Community Show. “Email me on admin@glastonburyfm. org.uk, text 07800 761883 or phone 01458 899811. We want to hear from community and amateur dramatic groups, sports, businesses, charities and fundraising events.” The Community Show broadcasts live on Thursdays from 3-5pm and repeated Sundays from 10am-noon. FAMILY-FOCUSED ACOUSTIC CAFE OPENS IN WEST PENNARD

L

aunched at the end of last year, the Pennard Acoustic Cafe is a semi-regular event that’s held at the West Pennard Village Hall. Hosted with support from Mean Feet Dance and The Peoples’ Health Trust, it’s designed to encourage and develop new performers in music and poetry – especially younger people and families who can’t make it to the open mics and gigs at pubs. The Acoustic Cafe is a mixture of open mic, cafe and craft activities, with a featured artist performing at the end of the session – the first guest performer in November was ex-Albion Band member, Ashley Reed. It’s a fun and cheap event (entry costs just £2 for adults) that will hopefully become another regular fixture on the local entertainment calendar. The next date is on Sunday, February 5, and you should head to the Pennard Acoustic Cafe Facebook page for more information.

THE

F

ive young local Squash players have helped Somerset’s under-15 county squash team pull off an unexpected, but richly deserved victory in the National Inter-County Squash Finals. Team Manager Tony Milford said “ The boys are a credit to their clubs, their schools and to themselves. To

watch them pull off victories that on paper they should have no right to win, and be clear-headed enough to deal with the inevitable ups and downs that come with competitive sport at this level has been a privilege. “I’d like to thank Somerset Squash & Racketball, and the clubs at Merriott, Street and Wyvern for their support. Most of all I’d like to thank the boys for giving me, their parents and everyone who supports junior squash in Somerset one of the best weekends in recent memory.” For further information about Junior Squash in Street, Taunton or Merriott, or more widely in Somerset, including opportunities for complete beginners of any age, please contact Tony Milford on 07970 448896 or via tonymilford@hotmail.co.uk.

ored of the cold, grey weather? Feel like it’s months before everything warms up a little and you can get out and have some fun? Fear not, as we’ve got the perfect solution for you! The next Travestees Comedy Club event will be held on March 1 at its usual venue of the Tor Leisure Centre, and here’s the line up to look forward to… Tony Law Due to very popular demand, multi-award-winning Tony is back for some more absurd, shouty and powerful, yet meaningful nonsense. Many of you will know him from Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe and plenty more. Sunil Patel Sunil is a calm, ultradownbeat stand-up with an aloof, outsider perspective who is able to find laughs in the bleakest of topics.

Chris Betts Chris has a style that is confident, thoughtful, ridiculous and mischievous, and he has been entertaining audiences across the UK ever since his arrival from Canada. Troy Hawke After a few months off, gleefully prancing around Poundland, Wetherspoon’s and Wilko’s (Google it), the delightful Troy Hawke is back as MC. Tickets cost just £10, and for more info or to reserve tickets, head to www.travestees.com.

It would seem Somerset is producing even more talent these days, and thankfully BBC Introducing are noticing and putting our stars in the limelight. Folk singer/songwriter Sharon Lazibyrd is the latest musician making waves with her single What Time is Later? featuring on stations such as Radio 6 and others across the country. We recommend you take a listen over on her Bandcamp or soundCloud pages – just type in Sharon Lazibyrd. You can also keep up to date with her latest news over on her Facebook page. Glastonbury Calling is fast approaching with this new one-day festival still making waves from last year’s incredibly successful debut. Six venues, a whole host of local talent, and all at the amazing value of £10 a wrist band! Available to buy at The Bocabar, Jaywalk Guitars and online at Bristol Ticket Shop. See you there!

THE GODNEY GATHERING 2017 LINE-UP REVEALED! On Saturday 21 January, The Godney Gathering hosted a very special radio show on GFM to announce the line-up for their 2017 festival, and it’s another brilliant list of talent from the world of music. Featuring some top stars and the cream of the local talent, it’s one day in July that you really don’t want to miss. Here’s a breakdown of some of the highlights…

THE DARKNESS

The Darkness are the ultimate singalong festival band. Formed in 1999, their album Permission to Land sold 1.5 million copies in the UK and spawned the hit I Believe in a Thing Called Love.

FEROCIOUS DOG

In their own words, Ferocious Dog are a full-on six piece sound that encompasses folk infused with rock, reggae and Celtic vibrations. Sounds good to us!

AND THERE’S MORE…

Local bands are well supported at the Godney Gathering, so you can look forward to performances by the likes of The Leylines, Kev and the Destroyers, Chloe Warren, Ant Noel and the Peabody Drakes, Missy Edwards Band, Sharon Lazibyrd, Shoot the Moon and Safehaus.

CALLING ALL THE HEROES

T

he Glastonbury Calling one-day music festival is back, and bigger than ever. Now running over six venues, you get a great range of music for the bargain price of just £10 (if you pay in advance, or £13 on the day). You pay a one-off ticket fee and then you’re free to go to any of the venues, and each one has between four and 10 bands and performers playing. Best of all, all the money raised goes to a very worthwhile cause, GFM, and as they managed to raise over £1,500 last year, hopes are high that they’ll raise even more this year! Glastonbury Calling takes place on February 25, and the first bands are on at 12.30pm – and the last

ones finish at 2am on the morning of the 26th. Sounds good? Course it does, and anyone who went last year will testify that it’s a brilliant day out. If you fancy it then we advise you to get your tickets asap, as they run out quickly. There might be a few left on the doors of the venues on the day, but the best way to guarantee a place is to book in advance. You can get tickets at Jaywalk Guitars, the Bocabar, the Hawthorns or through the Bristol Ticket Shop (www.bristolticketshop.co.uk), and you’ll save £3 on the day price, too! To give you an idea of the bands and where and when they’re playing, check out the guide below…

CHANGING BAD HABITS FOR GOOD

H

ave you started the new year with good intentions to lose weight, get fit, quit smoking, only to find out that a month later the old habits are creeping back and motivation has gone out the window? If so, then don’t feel bad, as it happens to many of us, and although it’s irritating and demoralising when it does, there is a solution: hypnotherapy. “We all understand the concept of being in two minds about something. Our rational, intellectual mind that may say something like ‘I’m going to quit smoking’ or ‘I’m going to give up sugar’, and then the other part, the emotional, more primitive part may say something like ‘But smoking helps me relax’, or ‘Oh, one doughnut won’t hurt’. And it can even send certain cues, such as salivating, at even the thought of eating a chocolate bar.”

In Hypnotherapy we will discuss your desired goals. Hypnosis (trance) brings the subconscious into play (we also go there in daydreams loads during the day). New habits are formed with the conscious mind and the subconscious mind working together, and this is how we strengthen our commitment to our goal. And because our emotional arousal level is lower, we then feel much more in control so we’re less likely to go off course when we’re feeling stressed. Hypnotherapy is a mutual alliance, both therapist and client working together to reach the client’s goal. My Mind Solutions are offering a free consultation throughout the month of February, where we can discuss your needs and then decide whether hypnotherapy is right for you. To find out more, call Kirstie Salter on 07966 517708 or email kirstie@mymind.solutions.

Child’s Play J

ust in case you missed it, a new shop opened up on Street’s High Street (number 54, to be exact). Isla Inspired, which is owned and run by Fiona Burrows and Gabby Costello, stocks a wide range of the finest organic children’s clothes, as well as a selection of Neal’s Yard products and other items. The shop has been open for just a few weeks now, and is already proving popular with people looking for high-quality clothing at reasonable prices. Another feature of the shop that sets it apart from other children’s clothes shops is that it offers a unique Clothes Library – as well as buying the clothes you can rent them! The library provides parents with an economical and sustainable way to clothe their kids (from birth to three years old) and it costs just £25 a month. The library is modelled on a Danish scheme. They found that people were spending a lot of money on kids’ clothing and their children were growing out of them in a couple of months. By renting the clothes, they

could send them back after a short period of time and get a complete new set in a slightly larger size. The clothing packs come in a range of sizes (from Newborn to 30-36 months) and are kept for a period of time that ranges from one month to six – as children obviously grow considerably quicker in the first year of their lives. The clothing brands are some of the finest on the market, including From Babies With Love, Frugi, Kite Kids, Piccalilly and Panda and the Sparrow. All the clothes are laundered and pressed with ethical and neutral-smelling products before they’re passed onto the next child. Considering that the average family spends over £1,000 on new clothes and shoes in just the first year of their child’s life, it’s clear to see that the savings are potentially huge! For more information on Isla Inspired and their Clothes Library, head to www.islainspired.co.uk or pop into the shop to see Fiona, who will be more than happy to help.

Trading Places

I

t’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s so great about the Wells Trading Post. We’ve walked through the front door of the converted mill countless times, and yet there’s always something new and surprising to see – the last time we were in there we spotted a very rare illuminated NME sign that would look stunning in our office! It’s run by the very amiable couple Robin and Tanith, and aside from the wide selection of furniture, antiques, tools and smaller gems, they also have a growing selection of pre-loved clothes and vinyl records. “Digital music can be a bit soulless,” Says Tanith. “And there’s something very special about buying a record, as you often get extras like lyrics or posters. We had a very rare first-pressing of the first Sex Pistols album in recently, and that came with a poster and single, too. That went for £200! “Vinyl is obviously very popular again, which is great. Our sales of records have rocketed since the vinyl revival, and we’re getting loads of new stuff in all the time.” And it’s a real mixture, too. Everything from Disco, Jazz, Punk and even a section on Steam Train Recordings (no, really). But what record is requested more than any other? You may be surprised to hear that it’s Tapestry by Carole King. Why? As Robin said: “It’s got loads of great songs, and most of them have been covered loads of time. It’s a classic.” “What’s great,” says Tanith, “is that you get a lot of young people coming in and hearing records being

played on our radiogram and not believing the sound quality you can get. Some actually go out about buy record players just because of that!” The Wells Trading Post is also expanding its pre-loved clothing section, too. They’ve got a brilliant range of clothing for men and women, as well as loads of accessories as well. It’s the perfect place for outfits for fancy dress parties and festivals. “We get people rushing in just as we’re closing and panicking as they need outfits for something like a 1920’s party. Obviously we’re happy to help!”

20 years of the Post On May 1 this year, the Wells Trading Post will have been open for 20 years. Tanith has been there from the start, and worked for nothing for five years to learn the ropes. She bought half the business in 2006 and then, three years ago, Tanith and Robin bought the other half. Tanith has a strong connection to the building, as her grandmother ran the offices when it was a mill. So when you’ve next got a spare moment and a burning desire to buy something, we suggest you go to the Wells Trading Post. From the weird and the wonderful to the beautiful and the stylish, they’ve got it all covered.
