itting here writing this in the middle of a chilly spell in a drizzly Somerset town, it’s sometimes to get the motivation to get up, out and find something to do. Luckily, February is particularly packed with stunning stuff that it’s impossible to sit still. The biggies are the Snowdrop Festival in Shepton Mallet and the welcome return of the Glastonbury Calling festival – which this year is spread over two days. Check out our bulging events guide that starts on page 23, and start booking in those dates! Speaking of events, after a longer development period than we initially expected (as is always the way!) we’re finally ready to launch The Basis Online. We’ll have more news next month, but expect it to go live around the 10th of February – www.thebasisonline.com. Hope you like the magazine, and be sure to check out the website for hundreds of local events!

STREET LIBRARY TO REMAIN OPEN

S

treet Library is set to remain open from April 1st 2019! This is great news, and it has happened because of a great deal of hard work on the part of Street Library Trust, Street Parish Council and the Friends of Street Library working with SCC. The new Street Library Partnership is built on this work, and from April the Partnership will take over the running of the Library. This brings both responsibilities and opportunities! Street Parish Council, on behalf of Street residents, has committed money to ensure that they still have trained, professional staff in their Library. Alongside these staff they will need volunteers to work during the afternoons. At present they have a team of willing people who are starting training and are committing to weekly or fortnightly shifts. If anyone else is

interested in volunteering, Street Parish Council will always need more to ensure that they meet all of their staffing obligations. Please contact Claire Axten on 07880 951428 or cllr.axten@ street-pc.gov.uk for more information. As well as volunteering, the new Partnership will also bring other opportunities, and people will be able to use the library for a variety of events, particularly to celebrate the arts. There are definitely challenging and exciting times ahead for Street Library! Situated on the A37 Near Shepton Mallet – BA4 6RY

Keeping Up To Date With Pet Vaccination As vets and pet owners, one of the most important things we can do for our pets is to make sure they are protected against infectious disease by vaccinating them. Why don’t we simply let the animal develop immunity naturally? Well, these diseases are extremely serious and often fatal. Vaccination saves many lives and countless hours of suffering. Vaccination is first carried out when animals are around 8-10 weeks of age to stimulate immunity as soon as possible, but after the passive immunity from mum, which can interfere with the vaccine, has waned. The vaccinations given to a pet will depend on their lifestyle. All dogs in the UK should be vaccinated against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus, and leptospirosis. Dogs which attend daycare or kennels should be protected against infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), and dogs which travel require rabies vaccination. Cats should be vaccinated against the pathogens that cause cat flu, as well as a deadly panleukopaenia virus. Vaccination against feline leukaemia virus is also strongly advised. Pet rabbits require vaccination to protect them from myxomatosis, and both strains of viral haemorrhagic disease – VHD 1 and VHD 2. Due to a large wild population, these infections are a real and serious ongoing risk to pet bunnies. It can be easy for your pet’s vaccination to slip your mind, but

FOOD FOR THE SOUL

The Food Forest Project is coming to Shepton Mallet

W

ould you like to see more trees in your community? How about more bird song, and free food? Welcome to the Food Forest Project, a group that plants community food-producing woodland, and they’ve got a project happening in Shepton Mallet. The Food Forest Project was born out of the need to help combat the rise of mental health issues and loneliness within society. It exists to help reconnect people with their natural surroundings through permaculture to help ease the burden of loneliness and stress by creating a safe space for people to forge relationships with each other and their natural surroundings. The Food Forest Project works with landowners and Land Trusts to acquire intensively used land for local communities to use as woodland allotment spaces. Working with local people, they turn these spaces into natural food-producing woodlands for people to use as a space to be with their neighbours, plant food and to enjoy all that nature has to offer. Quite simply, food forests meet some of our most basic

needs, completely sustainably! In a recent paper published by Parliament UK, Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, it is suggested that, “Local green spaces may provide important areas for social interaction and integration that can indirectly increase public well-being. Access to green spaces may also have more direct and immediate benefits for mental health and well-being.” We all feel better when we’ve been outside in a natural environment, and The Food Project want to offer everyone that opportunity, but with free food! The Food Forest Project have been granted an acre plot near Shepton Crematorium to plant a food forest. The Woodland Trust have given them some fruit trees and fruit shrubs, and in March they will be calling on the community of Shepton to come and help the Project plant them! There will be hot food and cakes, and all the money raised will go back into the organisation for more community projects. ocal Treasures is a business which uses the skills and experience of the over-50s to do all sorts of jobs in and around the homes and gardens of Shepton Mallet, Wells and surrounding areas. The ‘Treasures’ (the over 50s) do gardening, DIY, housekeeping, sewing, cooking, dog walking, decorating, childcare, admin, tutoring and much more. As the UK population is ageing rapidly, more people are finding that they need extra money each month to make ends meet. Local Treasures is set up to provide flexible ways to earn money working locally, well into retirement. You can work five days a week or one hour a month, it really is up to you. The business was established in 2013 in Hampshire and has recently won a grant to launch into the South West. “It is the flexibility that our Treasures love the most,” says Sarah Heyworth founder of Local Treasures. “They can continue to use their skills and earn money, but don’t have to be tied down to set days and times.” The business vets all Treasures and every one is insured for the work they do. The team are supportive and are there to make sure the jobs go smoothly. “We think it’s important to give both customer and Treasure confidence that the work will be done well and that the back-up is there should it be needed.” If you are over 50 with any skills and experience to put to good use and would like to earn money by working locally, by taking a dog for a walk or reading the newspaper to an elderly customer, decorating a bedroom or cooking a shepherds pie, Local Treasures could be ideal for you. The latest games destined for your console or PC

FAR CRY NEW DAWN FROM: Ubisoft FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One

RELEASED

15 FEB

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

T

he Far Cry series of games has been quietly growing in stature for some years now, and 2019’s New Dawn could be one of the series’ best yet. A narrative sequel to last year’s Far Cry 5, the game’s world has been coming to terms with the events at the end of that game – namely, the Nuclear War that obliterated most of the planet. The world is slowly rebuilding itself and so, 17 years after that event, we join the action. The map is based around Far Cry 5’s, but with new areas to explore. Some familiar characters also return, but there are more than enough original gameplay touches to make New Dawn stand up on its own merits.
