RADIO TALK
Jem Smith fizzes with passion and enthusiasm for world music. “John Peel was my hero,”says Jem with a smile. “And my mentor through his Radio 1 show which brought together all sorts of music. He introduced me to the infectious, sweet sounds of Africa.”This led Jem to tour West Africa then explore its music at African clubs. “I used to stay up most of the night and go to work in the morning after only two hours sleep.” Now Jem presents his own world music show on GFM each Wednesday from 7-9pm. It’s called World Beat and features local and global music from African to folk, Bluegrass, Gypsy, Latin, reggae, Asian and more. “Anything that is beautiful with a beat, rhythm, good melody and harmony can get played,”says Jem with his trademark grin. Jem also covers gigs and news from musicians and bands playing locally and in the region. Some shows feature a musical style or a country, or an unusual musical instrument. He has been presenting the show for two years after appearing as a guest on Allan Trinder’s Community Show and being trained by fellow GFM director Ian Liversidge. If any local or visiting band or musicians would like to play a session on the show you can contact Jem at jemworld@btinternet.com. GFM broadcasts locally on 107.1 FM and glastonburyfm. co.uk online. oes one of your goals include something about getting and staying active in later life? Perhaps you’ve got the healthy mind and need to work on your healthy body, too? Especially for those that are enjoying their retirement, we are pleased to introduce a new EXTEND Movement to Music class especially for the more mature adult. The classes are fun and designed especially for active older adults, those new to regular physical activity and people who may have physical disabilities. It’s really easy to pick up and so is ideal for older adults. It’s done at a lower intensity, not so fast, but just as much fun and is a good way to make new friends and is ideal for both sexes. If you want to get fit, or just to make new friends do come and see what it is all about. New classes will be restarting on Tuesday mornings in the New Year 121pm at The Crispin Centre. Sessions cost just £3.50 and everyone is welcome, so please do come and join us. This class is being funded through a partnership with Knightstone Housing and Creating Active Communities. Also new for the New Year are subsidised swimming sessions at Strode Pool on a Friday afternoon 2-3pm. Let us help motivate you to keep more active while having lots of fun! January 2017
Welcome to 2017! It’s a new year and I am sure a wealth of new talent is set to emerge. It is also set to be yet another killer year as Godney Gathering’s Mike Daniells threatens an insane line-up this summer, as well as the continual rise of young Oska Zaky. Chloe Warren had teased new things this year accompanied by a string of touring dates. This year I am also looking to set up a few networking events in the area for musicians, writers, and for the arts generally. It’s a chance for both you and I to get to know more about other people in the area, trade advice, contacts, and for others to learn more about their local area. Keep an eye out on Facebook for more details! Georgie Robbins

JANUARY AT WELLS CATHEDRAL Wells Cathedral Promenade Concerts Each year, in early January, the chairs are removed from the nave of Wells Cathedral allowing the congregation and visitors to appreciate the medieval nave in its original state – and completely without furniture. During the concerts, the audience can walk around and enjoy not just the space in the nave, but also the quire, transepts and side chapels. Some choose to wander the building, whereas others will find a special and unique place to sit where they can enjoy the performance. For details of all Promenade Concerts in the series, visit the Cathedral’s website at www.wellscathedral.org.uk. xpecting your Winter Fuel Payment? Don’t need it? Donate it! Surviving Winter is an awardwinning campaign that encourages people to donate some or all of their unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to other people in their communities who need it most. A Surviving Winter grant doesn’t just pay for extra heating. It’s hand delivered by one of our small number of trusted local partners, like Mendip Credit Union, Rotary Frome and Citizens Advice Mendip. A Surviving Winter grant becomes the foundation for a new relationship that can help overcome the isolation and loneliness that many older people experience. With the support of over 300 donors, Somerset Community Foundation was able to provide vital grants to 390 older people to help them through last winter. Please
help us grow this campaign to reach every isolated and vulnerable household in the county. To find out more about Surviving Winter, please visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk/winter. Lazy Daze
T
he unique sound of Lazy Daze may not simply come from a fusion of genres. Although a recipe of folk, rock, blues, country, along with classical influences, has the potential to produce something different. Another contributing factor could be that their lead guitarist, songwriter and occasional pianist, Davy Dall’oglio, trained as a percussionist, drummer James Arter is a bass player and guitarist, and bass player Gareth Lovelock is a guitarist. Appreciation for each other’s instruments, combined with the classically trained voice of Emma Dall’oglio, and Jon Nunn who adds guitar, mandolin and mandola to the mix, has produced what they sometimes refer to as Heavy Folk. For Lazy Daze, the last few years have been about evolving and refining their craft. From Emma and Davy Dall’oglio performing as a duo, to a five-piece offering rich, four-part harmonies and memorable tunes.
An exciting year ahead The band were recently professionally recorded and filmed live at Gareth’s birthday celebrations, so there is a Live EP and Live DVD due for release in early 2017. They were also lucky enough to be involved in the

They are also working on their debut studio album, pencilled in for release around April. Alongside all this, they have recently acquired a manager, Natalie Norton-Ashley, and sponsorship from Oomph & Lift, the lingerie shop in Street. Gigs scheduled include supporting Ant Noel and The Peabody Drakes at the Red Brick on January 21, Glastonbury Assembly Rooms on February 25 as part of Glastonbury Calling, supporting Sham 69 at the Cheese & Grain, Frome on March 31, and Hawthorns in Glastonbury on May 12. So, for the band, 2017 has the feelings of a new beginning. What with lots of new releases due and a plan already underway to pack the year with gigs and festivals, and work already started on their second album, Lazy Daze are band to watch out for. WHAT IS CROSSFIT?
T
he fitness program that everyone’s talking about, Crossfit is described as being ‘constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity’, which produces incredible fitness gains. Breaking down the traditional stereotypes of a standard gym, Crossfit is designed to be inclusive and encouraging to both the person with the fastest time as well as the person with the slowest one. Rather than have you alone in a room full of mirrors and crosstrainers, Crossfit is all about functional movement – squats, lunges, lifts, runs, etc. – and a real community atmosphere where everyone helps everyone else along. The Box Crossfit has been set up by two masters of the craft: Pete (a Royal Marines Physical Training Instructor) and Adam (a full-time Fire Fighter and ultra marathon runner), so you know that whatever you’re looking for, and however hard you want to train, there
are professionals guiding and supporting you every step of the way. Best of all, you can try it for free by simply adding your details below and handing them into The Box Crossfit at the address in the advert. There’s also a limited offer of membership for £40 a month, but you’ll need to be quick as there is limited availability for that offer.

GAMING MADNESS!
Looking for a new game, a retro title to add to your collection or a bargainpriced DVD? Then we suggest you head down to Insane Games in Street
S
elling everything from modern and retro consoles and games to Warhammer, trading cards and DVDs, Insane Games in the Crispin Centre in Street is the perfect place to unload some of that Christmas money that’s guaranteed to be burning a hole in your pocket! The shop has been in Street for a number of years, and they also have shops in Wells and Bridgwater, and they pride themselves on their massive range of titles and very competitive prices – check out the same title in Insane Games with any other games store and you’ll see what we mean. And as well as stocking the latest titles for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (as well as the consoles themselves), they also have a stunning range of retro consoles, games and controllers from the NES and the Master System upwards. They also know their stuff too, so if you have any gaming-related questions or are unsure which console would be right for you, then all you’ve got to do is ask and the staff will be glad to help. And there’s also the PlayStation 4 demo unit, which is packed with demos of the latest games to try in-store. Fans of Warhammer will find plenty to love here too. As well as a wide selection of sets, there are also

plenty of figures and paints, too. They even have their own Warhammer Club. If you’re interested in finding out more about that then just speak to a member of staff. All the Insane Games stores have a great selection of second-hand DVDs too, from films to TV shows to boxsets – and prices start at just 50p. And if you’ve got an old console or pile of games you’re looking to get rid of then you’ll get a great price for them at Insane games – and considerably more if you trade your stuff in for credit rather than cash.

A Walk from Godney to Glastonbury via Meare
1
Article and photographs by John Fleming
Grab a pint and lunch at the Sheppey, then head off on this lovely walk
S
tart from the Sheppy Inn in Godney. The walk is one way, so get a lift there if you don’t want to walk all the way back! From the pub, turn left and go into the cul-desac at the corner. At the T-junction, turn left. When you come to a farm entrance on the right (by a black corrugated iron barn), go through the gate and turn right. Follow the farm track until it emerges into a field, then keep going straight ahead with a hedge to your right. As you walk, look across to your left. This whole area used to be Meare Pool, the large freshwater lake from which Meare derived its name. Arriving at Division Rhine, there is a World War II pillbox on your right. Walk along the right-hand river bank, cross the bridge, go through the gate, and proceed with the small rhine to your right until you reach the River Brue. Turn left, and keep on the left of the Brue past the distinctive Meare Bridge, and Rectory Orchard on the opposite bank. Now make sure that you cross the next bridge. Just before the main road there is a kissing gate on the right, the path takes you to the Abbot’s Fish House (see image to the right). The Abbot’s Fish House was built in the 1330s to house the Abbey official in charge of fishery. Meare Pool provided an abundance of pike, bream, tench, roach and eels. There would have been a channel to

the lake leading from a thatched boat house just to the right of the main building, and a ‘pretty’ house on the far side of the field for the fishermen to drink in. If you want to go inside the Fish House, the keyholder’s contact details are on the door. Now backtrack, re-cross the River Brue, walk along the left-hand bank of the river and keep going until you reach the Godney road. As you approach Glastonbury, the way is completely blocked by a chicken coop, but the path in fact goes through it, just make sure you close the gates behind you.
