W

ell, did you make it to the Glastonbury Festival? If you did, then we really hope you enjoyed it and weren’t one of the many caught in the traffic or stuck in the mud! If not, then they good news is that there’s still time to grab a ticket for the Godney Gathering – although we recommend being quick about it, as they’re selling out fast. It’s a special issue of The Basis this month, as we’re devoting four pages to the Gathering. We think it’s exactly the kind of local event that should be encouraged, as it’s affordable, great fun and does lots to help local businesses and organisations. If you’re going, then we hope to see you there. Dean Mortlock, Editor

THE

hen you consider that the Priddy Folk Festival was started in 1991 by the PTA as a fundraiser in the local village hall, it’s impressive to see how it’s grown to be one of the best and most respected events in the folk music calendar. And the good news is that, 25 years on, it’s still raising important funds for the local community, with money going to everything from clubs to helping with maintenance costs at St. Laurence Church. Running from July 8-10, this year’s musical highlights include The Drystones, Rory McLeod, Belshazzar’s Feast and Breabach. In total there’s around 40 acts playing over the three days, and with artists from all around the world coming to play, there’s guaranteed to be plenty of variety, too. There’s still a few tickets left for sale, and a standard adult ticket costs just £70 for the weekend,

ARTISAN MARKET RETURNS TO BROWNE’S Bargains galore at popular event

I

f you weren’t able to get tickets for the Godney Gathering and you’re still looking for something interesting to do on Saturday, July 16, then we recommend that you head over to Browne’s Garden Centre in Keward, Wells, as they’ve got another of their hugely popular Artisan markets happening on that very day. The fun starts at 10am right through until 3pm. There’s free parking and lots of lovely local stalls, including food, crafts and gifts.

SUMMER FUN AT VICTORIA FIELD CLUB

V

ictoria Field Social Club in Street has got plenty going on in the month of July, starting with a wine tasting evening on Friday, July 1, and then the Street Cricket Club’s Fun Day on Sunday July 3. The wine tasting evening will give everyone a chance to sample a selection of fine wines that have been provided by Molson Coors – the drinks distributor for the club. You’ll then have a chance to vote for your favourites, which will then become a permanent addition to the club’s wine menu. Arrive at the club at 6.30pm, for a 7pm start. The Street Cricket Club Fun Day kicks off at 10am on July 3, and promises to be a fun day for everyone. The Women’s Active8 Cricket Festival will be hosted on the day, as well as many other matches – including a chance for parents to get involved up against the under-11s!

Local punk rock favourites Don’t Do Tuesdays have a video ready for your eager eyes. For the past couple of years they have been rocking our their own version of MGMT’s Kids so much to popular demand that they have now recorded it and even put a video together – and it comes highly recommended. If you get a chance to watch them play this live then please do. They even whack out the trumpet, priceless. Country rockers Square One have just released an EP called Let’s Go. Their faces may seem familiar to you, that’s because they have all dabbled in a mixture of bands between them and have solid reputations to boot. There is a lot of talent in that band, and their new EP simply proves that. You can check it out on Apple Music now. And lastly on the radar this month is folk singer/songwriter Henry Wacey from Frome, who has just released his new EP. In fact, he has released two: On my Travels Again and the acoustic version. Physical copies are available but if you wish to download it then head over to his bandcamp page. Another fine example of the talent we have in Somerset, so let’s make the most of it. OTHER EVENTS The Friends of Street Library Coffee Morning Saturday, July 2, 10am-12.30pm Street Library

So you thought radio chat show presenters are always calm and relaxed? Er, no. That might be true on the BBC but not on modest community radio stations like GFM, where there is no producer, no Green Room, no assistants. Most GFM presenters sit alone with a warm sound desk and the cold fear that your guests will not turn up, leaving you desperately thinking of funny stories to fill vacated air time. Luckily only one guest has not appeared in my more than 130 Media Talk shows on GFM, and she was taken seriously ill. However one week I had booked a local cider producer to do a cider taste test in the studio. I won’t name him, as it is unwise to annoy such people. Anyway, he arrived just as the show started and when I said “Lets do the taste test now” he went pale (which is unusual for cider makers) and muttered “I have left all the bottles at the farmhouse.” So I made a slightly rude remark and brought forward another item in the show to give me time to think. Then about 15 minutes later, Mrs Cider Man burst into the studio waving bottles of the cider and saying “I heard on the radio that the dope had left the bottles so I grabbed them and drove here like Lewis Hamilton.” The day was saved and the cider tasted so good! A NOBLE JOURNEY

Courses now available with renowned local artist, Mark Noble

A

fter a difficult time at school, and nearly 20 years working in a local factory, Mark Noble set out to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Inspired by the work of Turner, he hoped to be able to express the mystical, dream-like and sublime through delicate attention to the common-place or overlooked, expressing the emotional and cognitive realities of the inner life as suggested by the beauty and transience of nature. Mark has exhibited works across the UK and Europe, most recently as Artist-in-Residence at the CREATE:SPACE pop-up gallery in Street, and has received interest from as far afield as South America. Later this year a new series of Mark’s astronomical paintings will be on display at the Starlight Studio Gallery in Shepton Mallet.

With his work being exhibited across the UK and Europe, Mark is getting to realise a creative dream he harboured for 20 years. Now a grandfather, he is setting out on a new journey to help others pursue their own artistic hopes and vision. You can find out more about Mark’s work, or get in touch with him at www.marknobleart.co.uk where you can also link to his social media, or give him a call on 07730 038 619.

TALENTED LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER ‘ON TOR’ You really shouldn’t miss this chance to enjoy one of Glastonbury’s best landscape photographers

K

ev Pearson is a local landscape photographer who specialises in photographs of the Tor and other local beauty spots – you may have seen him out and about with his gear at an ungodly hour, whatever the weather. Kev’s got a big exhibition coming at the Blue Cedar print works in July and tells us all about it: “Since moving to Glastonbury last September I have built up a good fan base for my work, not just from locals but also from regular visitors to the town who feel that my images keep them connected to a place they hold dear,” Kev explains. “But as I work from home, it’s frustrating that I have no gallery space of my own. When Blue Cedar approached me to do a show in July it was a no-brainer.” Kev has already published a photo-book called Monochrome Moods, which contains black

and white images from Glastonbury, other parts of UK and Iceland, but the Blue Cedar show will be different. “It has 30 of my most popular (and personal favourite) images solely from Glastonbury and slightly further afield in Somerset. It will be a collection of standard format prints, some black and white and also several panoramic images, which have never been shown anywhere else – mostly because I’ve never had the space. “This is a landscape with which I can already feel a deep connection and I try to capture as much of that as possible in my photographs.” The Kev Pearson Photography Exhibition takes place at the Blue Cedar Printworks on Silver Street in Glastonbury, and is open daily until 30th July.

THE GATHERING STORM!

Over the next four pages we take a much closer look at one of our favourite annual events, The Godney Gathering

O

ne of the annual highlights in the Somerset music scene, The Godney Gathering has established itself as one of the friendliest and fun one-day festivals in the country. All the fun kicks off on July 16, and the good news is that although the festival is on track to be a sell-out again this year, there are still a few tickets left. Entry for the day costs just £25, and don’t forget that every full-paying adult can also bring in a child of 15 and under completely free! With over 75 acts, 10 whole hours of music spread across six stages – ranging from the Brothers Main Stage to the Jaywalk Guitars Stage and the GFM Local Stage – and a maximum capacity of just under 5,000, it’s no wonder that The Godney Gathering is so beloved by those that go every year.

Camping Although The Godney Gathering is just a one-day festival, camping is available at the campsite at Garslade Farm, complete with shower/toilet block and even some electric hookups. Space is limited though, so if you want to be able to completely relax at the festival, safe in the knowledge that your bed for the night is just a short walk away, then head to www.thegodneygathering.com/ accommodation to book your place now.

Food and Drink If you remember, we covered the food area of the festival pretty well a couple of months ago – with everything from BBQ Smokehouse to The Humble Pie Company – but it’s also worth mentioning that one of the festival’s main sponsors are the cider makers Brothers, so there will be plenty of opportunities to try out their brilliant range. The whole of The Basis team will be at The Godney Gathering, so hope to see some of you there on the day. If you fancy putting your name down to perform at next year’s Godney Gathering, then submissions open on September 1. See the website at www.thegodneygathering.com for more information.

TOP OF THE POPS

With a back catalogue of some of the catchiest pop songs released in the last 20 years, this year’s Godney Gathering headliners are Scouting for Girls

T

he band Scouting for Girls have released four albums and a greatest hits compilation in the nine years they’ve been recording together. Now with a brand-new EP, a whole ton of festivals under their belt and many crazy stories to tell, the band are headlining Somerset’s finest all-day Festival, The Godney Gathering. We managed to grab some time with the band’s singer and main songwriter, Roy Stride, to ask him about the band, Glastonbury and, typically, drinking too much cider… You have a hectic schedule coming up, how are you preparing for it? For us it has already started, as we’ve already played a few festivals. We finished a long tour to promote our new album at the end of Christmas so we are pretty match-fit anyway. We are just really enjoying this summer.

BASIS

THE

24

When you get to Godney Gathering will we get to hear a special rendition of Glastonbury? We are expecting to find you by the cider bus. Yes definitely! That is where I will be. That song is about the penultimate time we played Glastonbury. Scouting for Girls got their first break through the Glastonbury unsigned competition, and it was the first time anyone from the industry had ever got back to me about music. We got through, came to the festival and played in the Working Men’s Club. We didn’t win, but we got put on a CD which a DJ then picked it up and started playing. That is basically how we got our record deal, so Glastonbury has been very good to us. Glastonbury the song is about the time I went and met the person who put the whole unsigned thing together – we met at the cider bus. I only had two, but it was like 11% with a double shot of rum, and I literally couldn’t remember anything after that!

QUIZ

I missed the headliners. I just went back to my bed and went to sleep. We are really looking forward to coming to Godney, too. I’ve been looking at the videos on the website and it looks really fun. So what can we expect from your slot this year? Will you be playing your new material or are you going for the classics? We are going to play a few songs from our new record, as we are really proud of it. But there will be a heavy dose of the classics in there as well. We will play most of the songs that people want us to play.

You can tell that through your music, as what you write is very relatable. Have you had fans write to you saying they are listening to A Level Pain right now? I remember actually writing that song in my mum’s bedroom, halfway through revising for my exams and this is nearly 20 years ago now! Every year around this time we get messages saying ‘Oh my god this song is my life right now’. We have to ask… will we need extra security for your fan club, the Wolf Pack? Well see! It all came from our mailing list, so that

July 2016

everyone who was part of that became part of the wolf pack. Next year is the tenth anniversary of our album, so we are going to do something to celebrate that and resurrect how we started it, with the little books and the membership cards, merchandise, the limited edition CDs. I am so proud of this band and what we have done. We did it for all the right reasons. We did it because we were mates and we loved music and adventure. We never did it to be successful, as we never thought we’d be famous, which is like how bands used to start. I love it more now than ever, as our band is very much a community. We literally love festivals like Godney. It’s a family inclusive thing. It’s about having a few drinks, jumping up and down, and having fun with your mates. That is what we are about. We will see you at the Cider bar on July 16th. Yes, you will!

THE

What is it like hearing things like ‘your song was our wedding song’? You know, I never take it for granted. I spent 10 years trying to be a musician and I think that is how we managed to last for so long. We are a family, not in a sentimental way but in a ‘can’t get rid of them’ way. There are no secrets, there are no barriers, there’s no resentments. We stick together really well, and our personalities work well together.

LOCAL HERO

ROBERT BURNS

The boss of Burns the Bread has now opened his own bakery school and picked up an MBE! This is one man who’s had a very busy year…

I

July 2016

There’s been a bakers on the High Street site since the late 1700s! to leave the world a little better than when you came into it. Through the bakery and special fundraising events, Bob has raised a considerable amount of money for St. Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton. And, as a token for all the hard work he’s done, Bob was made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list this year! We’re all obviously very pleased for Bob, and believe it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

BASIS 27

THE

t was back in 1983 that Robert and Sandra Burns opened up the first Burns the Bread shop on the High Street in Glastonbury. The couple had previously been working as partners in a bakery business with Sandra’s parents, but when the opportunity came to buy the business from Mr. Janes, who’d owned it since 1942, it was too good a chance to miss out on. Initially, Bob kept the name on, and only changed it to Burns the Bread in 1987 after spending around £35,000 on a complete refit of the shop. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength, and Burns the Bread shops can now be found in Street, Wells and Castle Cary – as well as two further branches in Glastonbury! What’s the key to their success? Everything is cooked fresh every day at the main High Street shop, which we saw when we had a grand tour of the site by Bob himself. It’s a tightly run ship, and everything was organised perfectly, with ovens timed to turn on and warm up so that bakers could arrive in the middle of the night to get the bread and savouries baked fresh for the morning. With over 40 years’ experience in the business, Bob now feels it’s time to share that with the public, so you can now book up for one of his ‘School of Baking’ days that run regularly throughout the year. Courses are all day, and are the perfect introduction to the magic of baking! For more information, email burnsthebread@ burnsthebread.co.uk or telephone 01458 831532. Bob’s also done a lot for charity since moving into the area, as he has the philosophy that you should try

M

ark Anthony, a man of many musical talents, is now working on a brand-new project called ‘Hidden Gentlemen’, along with Kyle Cullen and Greg Shepheard. Formed earlier this year, they have already released their first EP, First Quarter, and it looks like we are set to be blessed with even more music from them as they recently posted snaps of themselves in the studio on social media. Many will recognise the name as Mark has been an established musician in the area for years – as well as his son Kyle, who is carrying

on the family musical traits. Mark takes many influences, including the likes of rock and blues, and even dabbling in a bit of modern day pop every so often. Many of his tracks are available to download from his website, too. I had the pleasure of catching Mark at his album launch party last year, and he’s such a talented musician, and a testament to his craft. With two more talents on board you’ll bound to see Hidden Gentlemen plastered everywhere, and rightly so. Georgie Robbins
