GET MUSICAL WITH MADDIE
A
new CBeebies Radio series produced by local production company Audio Factory is out now and aims to encourage young listeners and their families to exercise by taking part in music and movement based activities. Musical Maddie consists of 10 episodes in which Maddie and friends study how different things move in the world around them and then recreate those movements with their bodies during simple dance routines. Having previously produced two series for BBC’s CBeebies Radio, Audio Factory co-founders Arran Dutton and Dave Perry have continued to involve the local community in their productions and many of the episodes feature families based in and around the Mendip region. Furthermore, the leading character of Maddie is also played by 10-year-old local schoolgirl Ruby, who does a
wonderful job in leading the audience through Maddie’s very own touring music and movement class. The series also features music and songs composed by Gary Smith, who many will know on the local music scene as Mr Keep Calm. When asked what to expect from Musical Maddie, series creator and writer Arran Dutton said, “There’s lots of great music and songs that will get listeners in the mood to dance and move with all sorts of fun activities.” Links to Musical Maddie episodes are available at www.audiofactory.co.uk/childrensradio.

It is with great sadness that the Strode Live stream of shows has come to an end. I managed to catch a few of their performances, and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. Many performers left a lasting impression, and it won’t be long until we see them again somewhere. They offered a wide variety, whether it was solo singer/songwriters, folk, band or well anything you can think of, they had it there for you! The likes of Chloe Paull, Somer Tomlinson, Tolly Snell, Arthur Cullen, Emma Browne and so many more gave us a little taste of the names we should be looking out for in the coming years. The Bocabar seems to be churning out some incredible evenings lately, one of course being GFM’s songwriting competition. The finalists battled it out for festival slots across Somerset, including The Godney Gathering. The likes of Safehaus, Kevin & The Destroyers and My Social Orbit were finalists in the third annual competition. Each year the contest gets stronger and the entries come thick and fast but this year the panel chose to crown David 9 Lunas the winner. It was a tough one to decide, and I’m thankful I wasn’t a judge! Georgie Robbins

The space where we have built our studio is ideal, but the only problem is that while the building is surrounded on three sides by flat land, on the other we have Wearyall Hill, Windmill Hill and The Tor. This severely limits our range of transmission, as radio waves travel in straight lines, so if you live on the other side of these hills then the radio wave will go over your receiver. The best way to reach all parts of the community is to raise the aerial as high as possible. Obviously the Tor is the highest point but we didn’t think the National Trust would want an aerial on top of the tower. The next highest point is Windmill Hill where St Edmund Community Hall have agreed to house the aerial. From this position a strong signal will reach all parts of our licensed area of Glastonbury, Street and Wells, plus the surrounding villages. We had to apply to Ofcom for approval to change the aerial position and Mendip District Council for planning permission. The cost of the project is around £8,000, of which a grant of £6,600 came from the Mendip Local Legacy Fund. The remainder we have raised ourselves. The new aerial should be transmitting by the end of May, and we really can’t wait! Bob Lloyd Station manager

These offer knitting, sewing, Rangoli, flower craft, fairy making, wicker sculpture, painting and more. You can book spaces for these on our website or by phoning 01823 690299.
On Saturday, June 11 there will be an amazing gig at the village Hall, featuring Nick Parker and The False Alarms and the critically acclaimed energetic and crowd-stomping Coco and The Butterfields. A SPACE TO CREATE Come on in. Rest, create and be inspired
C
REATE : SPACE is a pop-up community creative space celebrating local artists, musicians, authors, and, maybe, you! As we rush to get through the competing list of demands that consume our time and energy, this is a place to reflect and breathe. Here some of the most talented and inspirational people from our local community have given something just to celebrate you, give you a chance to think, to express yourself, and to be the focus for just a few moments before you hurry on. Wave as you walk by. Engage with one of our daily creative activities. Sit a while and read. Lose your thoughts in an image, or watch the world passing by the window. Stay for a moment or an hour. Here you cannot buy or sell. Here you are not a customer but a collaborator.
This is not one more thing for your ‘to-do’ list. This is for your ‘to be’ list. We are delighted to share with you the creativity of… Norman Parker (artist), Arik Casey (artist), Caroline Byrne (artist, writer), Mark Noble (artist), Irene Williams (artist), Hazel Wood (artist), Simon Williams (photographer), Liz Thomas (artist), Judy Sharp (artist) – and many others. CREATE : SPACE is part of the life of Street Harvest Church. You are welcome here.

The friendly service and relaxed atmosphere is already proving popular with students and local workers (who get a discount at lunchtimes), and the whole bar is even available to hire for private functions, too.

T
he big event in the area this month is undoubtedly the Glastonbury Fringe, which is now in its fifth year. To kick off the festivities in style, there’s a very special launch party taking place at the United Reform Church on Thursday, June 16, which will feature four excellent local bands for the criminally low price of just £5. The four acts down to perform are Liam Howard & the Truthseekers, Ant Noel & the Peabody Drakes, The Billy Shinbone Show and Bob Gallie, a quartet of bands that play the area regularly but very rarely on the same bill – making it a unique opportunity to see them all in one place.

It’s impossible to live in Glastonbury and not know Knight’s Fish and Chips, but how well do you know ex-Mayor and boss, Kevin?

This photo is, we believe, of Frank Knight himself, along with Nan Knight. everyone benefits from the diverse culture we have here, and it’s great.” It’s always heartwarming to hear of a traditional business that keeps going and keeps serving the community, and as Knight’s have also won several awards and featured in many Top 20 lists for their food, they’re clearly doing something right. A warm welcome and some of the best fish and chips you’ll taste is clearly their recipe for success.
Kevin stood outside the famous Knight’s Fish and Chip Restaurant.

THE
night’s Fish and Chip restaurant is the oldest family-run chippy in the country, as well as the oldest business in Glastonbury itself. Incredibly, there’s been a fish and chip restaurant at the same location of 5 Northload Street in Glastonbury since 1909, when Mary ‘Louisa’ Phillis opened the first one with Mrs Hockey. Knight’s was then born in 1932 when Frank Knight took over the business, and the shop is now run by Kevin Mitchell, who’s married to Bill Knight’s daughter, Charlotte – Bill was Frank’s son. Kevin moved to Glastonbury in 1967 as a young boy and went to school at St Benedict’s and St Dunstan’s – which is where, later in life, he met Charlotte. Kevin is well-known around the town, as he served two four-year terms on the local council, helped to set up the local play scheme and was even the Mayor in 1997. Most of his working life he worked in sales, but it was when his father-in-law wanted to retire that Kevin learned the ropes of the shop – as well as the secret recipe for their amazing batter, which has been handed down through the generations. Kevin and Charlotte have owned the business for the last eight years, and Kevin has never been happier. “It’s the people that make it,” he says. “We’ve got customers that have been coming here for over 50 years. And it makes this job worthwhile when they say ‘It’s as good as we remember it’!” As someone who’s spent the majority of his life in Glastonbury, it’s to be expected that Kevin has seen a few changes in the town. “Obviously there’s a big alternative scene in the town, but I really think that

Off to Bride’s Well The perfect short walk on a balmy summer’s day
T
his month’s walk is relatively short, and could be completed in an hour, but I would recommend taking a bit longer. The St Ives artists Peter Lanyon and Terry Frost famously used to walk through the Cornish landscape to ‘get intimate with it’; had I been rushing, I might not have noticed the roe deer in the distance. Starting from the Red Brick Building, walk towards Street on the A39, keeping to the grass verge on the right-hand side of the road. Where the dual carriageway starts, the road crosses a waterway known as South Drain; go through the kissing gate and walk along the right-hand bank. Don’t cross the bridge when you come to it, but go over the stile and carry on until you arrive at a small rhine; climb both stiles and follow the path to the right. The now-flooded former peat workings will be on your left, which is a superb place to observe wildlife. At the corner, take the path that goes off to the right across a small wooden bridge; cross the field

and climb the gate. There is a stile here, but it’s very overgrown and brings you out on the wrong side of the barbed wire. Proceed onto and along the tarmac drive, turn left at Hulk Moor Drove, and then right into Porchestall Drove. After crossing the bridge, go through the gate on your right to walk along the lefthand bank of the River Brue. Continue through the gates until you come to a seat and small tree beside a boggy pond; this is the site of St Bride’s Well. Having paused at the Well, walk away from the river – roughly towards the tall Bailey’s Building chimney – and you will see the kissing gate leading to Beckery Island (St Bride’s Mound) where, at the time of writing, there is an archaeological dig underway. Although the excavations will almost certainly have been filled in by the time The Basis is delivered, the artefacts that have been found will be displayed at the Red Brick Building sometime in July. Walk down the hill, and past the ZigZag Building to get back to where you started.
