t’s an exciting month for us for many reasons. Firstly, the Glastonbury Fringe is back, with almost two weeks of top-class entertainment packed into numerous locations around the town (page 14). And when that dies down, we’ve got the Godney Gathering to look forward to next month – in this issue we take a closer look at their Silent Dome experience, and speak to a couple of the DJs performing (page 16). It’s also the 80th anniversary of the Greenbank open-air pool in Street, and they’re celebrating with a fantastic party with all kinds of entertainment for you. Head to page 5 to find out more.

The main celebrations happen on July 1 though, as there’s a Fun Day running from 10am-5pm and then a Pool Party from 6-10pm! mazingly, it’s now been 80 years since the Greenbank Outdoor Pool first opened its doors to the people of Street. Originally the pool was gifted to Street (primarily for women and girls) by Alice Clark, and although it’s been updated many times over the years, it retains its unique character – and is, in fact, a listed building. There’s a 30x12m main pool, a children’s pool and also a wet play area too, complete with slides and fountains. Surrounding the pool are beautifully tended lawns, helping to create a wonderful oasis in the middle of the village. Everyone in the area knows and uses the pool, going back several generations. On April 30 this year there was an opening celebration to mark the 80 years, and the guests of honour included Richard Clark, Eleanor Gould, Councillor Stuart Dowden and James Guy, an Olympic medallist and British Champion! AFFORDABLE NEW ART EXHIBITION AT THE RED BRICK BUILDING

O

ne hundred years ago the artist Wassilly Kandinsky said that there is a bit of oneself in every painting, and he was right. Local artist Pip Wilson understands that more than most, as he calls his exhibitions an ‘Eclectic Melange’, because he studies various artists, mixes them up with current inspirations to produce vivid, original and striking work. My rambles around the Collard Hill area near my home have resulted in orchard paintings inspired by Higher Brooks and farm buildings,” says Pip, “while my recent visits to the Clarks Shoe Museum have resulted in a tongue-in a cheek series of shoe paintings!” Sound interesting? Good, because Pip, along with other artists, has put together an exhibition called An Eclectic Melange of Art, which will be running at the Red Brick Building from June 15 to July 23. “The bonus here is that the Red Brick’s commission rates are so reasonable that my prices are really keen,” laughs Pip. “My aim has been to make this a truly affordable art show, so come along and enjoy!

Bike Week is an annual national event to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life, by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. The week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, and is taking place on June 10-18. Street Parish Council will be demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling on Saturday, June 10, with an event in The Library Gardens from 10 until 4pm. A range of bicycle-related activities are planned. The two local cycle clubs of Street and Mendip will be offering information on their rides, and the local bike shop, Cog and Sprocket, will be also be there to give residents a chance to try out an electric bike! Sustrans, the charity that is making it easier for people to walk and cycle, are holding a consultation on cycling in the local area, as they have been employed by Street Parish Council to draw up a cycling and walking feasibility plan for Walton, Glastonbury and Street. The local police will be on hand to undertake bicycle security marking, and The Neighbourhood Watch will also be there to advise on security issues. And there will be a visit from unicyclists and BMX riders. Street Parish Council have had a major focus on health and wellbeing in the past year, and hope this event will add to what has already been achieved.

he newly formed Wells Theatre Company is kicking off in fine style, with a three-night promenade performance of Hamlet at The Bishop’s Palace on June 29-30 and July 2. A promenade performance differs from a standard one in that the first act will move through the grounds and palace, with the audience following the actors. The second act will be set solely on an outdoor stage. Ambitious? Certainly, and with a setting such as the Palace, this could easily be one of the dramatic highlights of the year. You can find out more about the Wells Theatre Company on Facebook, and if you’re interested in booking tickets for this performance, head to https://bishopspalace.org.uk/theatre.

June 2017

Usually I enjoy writing my monthly column, seeking out news and supporting local musicians, however this month is tinged with sadness. May brought us the devastating news that local musician and all-round legend Ben Kench sadly passed away. A friend to many, an inspiration and a family man, the influence he had is immeasurable. Over the years he shared his talents in many different forms, whether it was song writing, teaching, or in various bands. I got to know Ben when he began plugging away with Safehaus, a band close to my heart. Over the past couple of years I have seen them play at countless venues with different friends, all of whom fell in love with them too – a testament to his talents and personality. Ben was always grateful for our presence, friendly and blessed us with his soul. His last show was his parting gift, and one I feel honoured to be a part of. Ben, thank you for the music, thank you for the influence. Georgie Robbins

LOCAL BUSINESS WINS ETHICAL AWARD

T Don’t prepare. Just chat. That’s the secret of success for Big Air. This popular show on GFM has been running for seven years and ain’t stopping now. “We come to the studio completely unprepared. We don’t talk to each other beforehand. We rely on 35 years of friendship to make the show work,”says co-presenter Lynne Alecsander. The other half of the show is Sara Benham, who combines performing her own stand-up comedy with a day job as an estate agent. “There are similarities,”says Sara. “In both jobs you are communicating with people, hopefully with more for the stand-up.” Big Air is full of weird and wonderful humour, plus mainly new music, and the two friends encourage other women to come forward with ideas to hopefully present their own GFM show. “It’s great fun, and presenting a radio show as a duo works well,”says Sara. Lynne, who works at the Little Imps toyshop in Glastonbury, says they welcome feedback from listeners on their Facebook page Lynne and Sara’s Big Air. The Big Air show broadcasts every Friday from 10am-noon at 107.1 FM and online at glastonburyfm. co.uk. Philip Welch

THE FRINGE BINGE

T

he Glastonbury Fringe enters its sixth year in 2017 with more events than ever before and its biggest opening event yet. With the Fringe dates changed to June 9-21, it runs slightly longer than previous years and no longer clashes with Glastonbury Festival. For 13 days Glastonbury will be awash with music, theatre, seminars, workshops and street performances, all produced by local people. The Fringe has always had at its centre a core purpose to showcase the quality and diversity of the artistic experience Glastonbury has to offer all year round. In this, the Fringe is a much-publicised snapshot of what a visitor can expect in Glastonbury at any time but condensed into a two-week experience.

Ready to launch

The launch party in 2017 is being held at Glastonbury Abbey on Friday, June 9, and features local acts King Artisan and Lazy Daze along with national touring bands 3 Daft Monkeys and Tankus The Henge. Tickets are £10 in advance or £15 on the door, and the event is expected to give this year’s Fringe its biggest kickstart yet. The Abbey is an iconic landmark in which to host the launch party and will provide a spectacular backdrop to an amazing night. The Fringe is also hosting a stage at the Abbey open evening on Saturday, June 10, which will also include many market stalls. The Fringe stage returns again in 2017 and will be on show in multiple locations in the town, showcasing live performances every day of the

UEUE S ISS HI S ISS

Fringe. If you are a performer and you’d like to perform on the Fringe stage, please get in touch via the website at www.glastonbury-fringe.org. uk. The Fringe stage is always popular and hosts a very diverse range of acts and styles.

Win stuff!

In 2017 Glastonbury Fringe is also launching its Instagram account with a competition that will showcase what people think represents Glastonbury pictorially. By uploading a picture to Instagram that tags the Glastonbury Fringe Instagram account and uses the hashtag #Only1Glasto, you are automatically entered into the competition. You can find details of the competition, including the prizes on offer, at the Fringe website. The Glastonbury Fringe program will be available again this year for free throughout the town, and will contain details of the events and venues as well as information about the many local businesses that actively support the Fringe. Without the support of local businesses the Fringe would not be able to run, and we are very pleased that this support increases year on year. So from June 9-21 get yourself out and about in Glastonbury to catch the amazing array of talent and entertainment this town has to offer. Grab your tickets to the launch party and help the Fringe grow again in 2017. You can stay abreast of Fringe news via the website and you can also keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There’s always something happening in this town!

Kane Greenhalgh

What’s your DJing experience? I first started learning how to DJ at around 14/15 years old, and playing The Godney Gathering in 2015 opened many doors to venues in the South, such as Blue Mountain, Basement 45, VanWest Festival and many more. Why will people who’ve never tried it love the Silent Dome? The Silent Dome is something so surreal. Everybody goes to have an incredible time, and each year the dome gets better and better. What sort of stuff will you be bringing with you to play? I’ll be mixing my music genres up, but I’ll make sure the energy is always at 100%! I’ve been asked to headline this year in the Dome and I really don’t plan on going half-hearted, so if you’re attending this year expect something crazy! Hope to see you all there.

Eko Matrix

What’s your DJing experience? I started DJing when I moved out to the USA four years ago, and I’ve managed to play at state music festivals such as GANZA, as well as play in much larger clubs alongside renowned artists such as Crywolf, Brewtal and Sightlow. Why will people who’ve never tried it love the Silent Dome? It’s crazy looking up into the crowd and hearing everyone sing a massive track when there are no speakers, just headphones. I know a few who spend the entire day at Godney in the Dome! What sort of stuff will you be bringing with you to play? I will definitely be bringing some of my American influences with me. Anyone who has seen me play before will tell you that I love to tease the crowd with dirty mash ups and unexpected drops.

SENSE STYLIST GETS ON HER BIKE TO RAISE £1,000 FOR GREAT CAUSE

A

ll the staff and customers at the Sense salon in Coxley wanted to let one of their star stylists know how proud they all are of her. Lindsay Grantham recently undertook a 40-mile charity cycle ride for the charity My New Hair, and when all the cash was added up, Lindsay had raise a staggering £1,000 for this brilliant cause. By her own admission, Lindsay hadn’t cycled for a while, so undertaking a ride of this length was quite a challenge. Luckily her determination and hard work paid off, and she zipped through the 40 miles in a stunning time. The team at Sense all got behind Lindsay, and in the week running up to her ride, every team member was offering a File and Polish or Blow Dry in return for a donation. They also hosted cake sales, too.

My New Hair is the new charity founded by Trevor Sorbie MBE. Their aim is to provide public advice and support to a national network of salons who provide wig styling for people suffering from cancer and medical hair loss. As you can imagine, this is a time when people need sensitive support and guidance and just want to look their best. Luckily, My New Hair can help them, with the support of fundraisers like Lindsay! For more information on My New Hair, head to www.mynewhair.org.

SPOTLIGHT

CONTACT THE ELDERLY

This brilliant, long-standing organisation ensures that elderly people living alone get regular contact and companionship

S

upported by a network of volunteers, Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people aged 75-plus who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. The charity has been going since 1965 and there are now over 700 groups nationally – and we are really growing in Somerset. There are several local groups in the Street, Glastonbury and Wells area, so why not find out more and see how you can help?

How it Works Once a month, usually a Sunday afternoon, each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the charity’s drivers and older guests remain the same. This means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Volunteering – Three Main Ways to Help Driver – Use your own car to collect guests and then take them to that month’s hosts home for tea. You’ll do this once a month – or less often if you put yourself down as a reserve.

BASIS

THE

28

Host – Welcome the group to your home for tea, just once or twice a year. You will need to live in a house with a downstairs toilet, and there can be no more than three steps required to get into the house. Group Co-ordinator – We have an urgent need for people to come forward to help organise the monthly tea parties and visit new older guests.

Be a Guest (or refer someone) Do you know someone 75 years or over who lives alone, has little contact with friends and family and finds it a bit harder to get out and about? Our friendly tea parties are a lovely way to brighten up an empty Sunday! Guests are not expected to host any of the tea parties and the service is free. To find out more, contact Helen Ker-Bridges, Regional Development Officer, on helen.ker@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk or 01225 873812. You can also check out the Contact the Elderly website at www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk.

The best in animal care, the best in client care

BASIS 31

THE

Sultry summer days are here again, but with them come those creepy crawlies which bother our pets. This includes ticks, which are often found in areas with thick vegetation such as woodland or heath, where they climb to the top of long grass and wait for a potential host to pass by. As with any bloodsucker, ticks cause irritation where they attach, although they don’t cause the same fierce itching that fleas and mosquitoes do. This is because while they are attached, they don’t want the animal to realise they are there – their saliva actually acts like a local anaesthetic! Ticks can transmit disease when they bite, and although uncommon in the UK, Lyme disease is still a threat and is very difficult to eliminate from the body once an infection has been acquired, so as always, prevention is better than cure! It’s important to realise that some of the commonly suggested ways to remove a tick, such as applying Vaseline or alcohol, or pulling them with your fingers, do more harm than good. By distressing or squeezing the tick, they cause it to inject more saliva, thus increasing the risk of disease transmission. Orchard Vets have several products available to either kill or better still, repel ticks, so do feel free to contact us for advice. We can also book complementary nurse appointments to demonstrate how to remove ticks safely, reducing the risk of infection or leaving the mouthparts in.

T

he bad news for those of you that haven’t already got your tickets for The Godney Gathering is that, at the time of writing this, they were heading for an early sell-out. The good news though is that The Godney Gathering have given us two pairs of tickets to give away to two lucky winners! Headlining this year’s festival are The Darkness, but there’s also the Dub Pistols, Ferocious Dog, Nathan Grisdale, The Leylines and many, many more to look forward to – as well as the Comedy and Cabaret tent, which make its debut this year. Winning the tickets couldn’t be easier. All we’d like you to do it tell us the date that this year’s Godney Gathering will be held on. Got the date?

DON’T GET USED TO STRESS!

T

he first thing to say is that stress in itself, is not harmful. The most dangerous thing about stress is how easily you can get used to it. It can start to feel familiar, even normal.

But how do I deal with it?

Recognise when you are stressed and keep a record of stressful situations – understanding this is the start to taking back control.

Learn how to relax

Meditation, a good book, mindfulness… try to do whatever it is that relaxes you. Get enough sleep, as we all manage better after a good night’s rest.

Time Management

Getting organised is a good way to relieve stress.

Look after your physical self

Exercise and a healthy diet can increase self-esteem and confidence.

Positive thinking

Don’t dwell on failures, reflect on achievements.

Seek help from others

Friends/family are a great resource but sometimes a professional is needed. As a Quest-trained Cognitive Hypnotherapist, See Life Changing have scientific evidence that what we offer works – published in the Mental Health Review Journal. The effectiveness for treatment of depression and anxiety showed that 71% considered themselves recovered after an average of four sessions. This compares to an average of 42% for other approaches using the same measures (like CBT). Contact us for a free 30-minute chat to find out how to help you become a ‘Stress Terminator’! Drop us a line on 020 8798 3849 or head to www.seelifechanging.co.uk.

Distance 3 miles Terrain Gentle Slopes

A Walk to Collard Hill

P

artially buried in a hedge in Keen’s Elm Lane, about 100 yards from the Somerton Road end on the right hand side, you will find a wooden Public Footpath signpost. There is no stile, so you will have to open the metal gate or climb over it. Follow the path through this and the next field – walk to the right of the hedge as you approach the woods, go over the stile and footbridge and turn right. The Hood monument becomes visible as you near the top of the hill. Carry on until you come to Gate X – it’s marked on the map. Don’t go through this gate, but turn right to walk along the edge of the field you have just crossed. Proceeding to the next field, you will need to head for the far left corner. There are two stiles here so take the first one, in the left-hand hedge, negotiating the ditch and bank to reach it. The area you emerge into is the site of Marshall’s Elm Roman Villa. Head for the gap in the trees, following the track and then the driveway, turn left at Reynald’s Way. There are no pavements, so take care as it can be a busy road. About 50 yards along there is a lay by on the right; go through the kissing gate here and then the next one. You have reached Collard Hill, home of the recently reintroduced ‘Large Blue’

BASIS

butterfly – their main habitat area is surrounded by a blue rope. They are not actually particularly big, but they take their name from the fact that they are bigger than the ‘Common Blue’ butterfly, which can also be seen here. June or July are good months for observing both species, but even if you don’t see any butterflies, the view is fantastic! To complete the walk, turn left and follow the path through two more kissing gates. 100 yards or so after the second gate, turn left onto the grassy track between two clumps of stinging nettles, and then right to the gate leading back to Reynald’s Way. At the road, turn left and then right into Westfield Lane. This will eventually lead you a sharp right-hand bend, and Gate X (mentioned earlier) is on the corner.
