W

e’re creeping into the high point of Summer now. Solstice is just around the corner now, and people are starting to work out how few clothes they can survive on at Glastonbury so they can fill their rucksacks full of booze. Putting the festival to one side for a wee while, there absolutely loads to get excited about this month. We’ve got Somerstock happening this month, a drinks festival that cleverly mixes cider with cheese, and five pages packed to the gills (if pages did actually have gills) with a massive selection of events for the month ahead. Don’t forget that if you want even more events to choose from across the whole county, check out www.thebasisonline.com.

Local charity is holding an abseil charity event at Wells Cathedral

T

his autumn the Shepton Mallet-based charity, SOS Africa is organising its toughest fundraising event to date – a 124-foot freefall abseil from the North West Tower of Wells Cathedral! From Friday, September 27 to Saturday, October 5 from 9am to 6pm, brave participants dressed as their favourite characters from children’s books will climb the 262 steps to the top of the tower (the height of nine giraffes to be precise) and freefall abseil from a cantilever platform assembled on the tower roof. When they touchdown safely at the base of the tower they will have secured vital reading support for another child in South Africa and raised invaluable funds for the upkeep of the Cathedral.

June 2019

The SOS Africa Charity was founded by an 18-year-old gap student from Shepton Mallet in 2003 to fund the education of underprivileged South African children, and now operates four education programmes supporting 178 children across the country. “Proceeds raised by the event will fund the introduction of holistic reading programmes at each of our Education Centre’s across South Africa,” says SOS Africa Founder, Matt Crowcombe. So if you think that’s something you’d like to try then for more information please visit www.sosafrica.com/ wellscathedralabseil or contact SOS Africa CEO Matt Crowcombe (matt@sosafrica. com/01749 344197).

STREET LIBRARY LATEST Now that Street Library has reopened in its new location, Angela Southern from The Friends of Street Library explains a bit more about how it’ll work

A

pril 29 marked the last day that Street Library was open in the building which had been its home since the purpose-built library was created for the people of Street in 1924. Members of Street Parish Council called an emergency meeting at which the Councillors voted to work together with Somerset County Council to create a new Library using the Street Parish Council building. On Wednesday, May 29 the Library re-opened at 9.30am on the opposite side of Leigh Road. The Friends of Street Library, who have played a key role in keeping a Library service running in Street, will soon be part of the Street Community Library Partnership, consisting of Street Parish Council as the Lead Partner, Somerset County Council and the Friends of Street Library. Besides their usual activities of supporting Street Library in many ways – not least organising activities in the Library for children – the Friends of Street Library are playing an important role in organising volunteers to work alongside the professional library staff now that the new Library has opened. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer

or in joining the Friends of Street Library to support them financially, then please enquire in the Library itself and someone there will be glad to help you. www.glastonburyreclamation.co.uk 01458 831122 info@glastonburyreclamation.co.uk @GlastonburyReclamation @glasto_reclaim @ GlastoReclaim

FARMS OPEN UP TO THE PUBLIC FOR OPEN FARM SUNDAY

O

n June 9 hundreds of farms all over the country will once again open their gates for LEAF Open Farm Sunday 2019. As the farming industry’s annual open day it offers an opportunity for people to discover real farming first hand, and see for themselves how their food (and much more besides) is produced. It is also a chance for farmers to shine a light on what they deliver and why supporting British farming matters. Last year Neil Macdonald opened Orchard Park Farm, at Hornblotton, for Open Farm Sunday for the first time. Over 1,000 visitors came to see the cider orchards, farm machinery and animals and to enjoy local food and woodland entertainments. This year he plans to do the same thing again, with even more

farm related events for visitors to enjoy. Another farm in the area that will be open to the public for the day is Godney Farm near Glastonbury. There are plenty of activities available on the farm, so it should be a fun day out for all the family. For more information on Open Farm Sunday, head to farmsunday.org.

When you have owned your pet since they were a few months old, it can be tough to come to terms with the fact that the years have flown by. With age comes, almost inevitably, some health problems. At Orchard Vets we pride ourselves on helping you take great care of your senior pet. As pets age, a health check at least once or twice a year is really important. Your vet will weigh your pet, listen to their heart and lungs, check their joints for signs of arthritis, and their teeth for painful dental disease. Depending on their findings, they might suggest blood tests to check the health of their internal organs, or trialling something like a pain medication to improve your pet’s comfort levels. The more regularly a senior pet is seen, the earlier changes in their health are detected and the more effectively we can manage underlying conditions. You can make changes at home to help your senior pets. Steps or ramps can help them get in the car, or reach a favourite seat or perching spot. Older dogs may struggle with long walks, and cope better with a few shorter ones. Senior dogs and cats can suffer with dementia-type changes. Puzzle toys that keep the brain active can help. Natural supplements that are rich in omega oils help keep your pet’s body and brain healthy for longer. Our veterinary and nursing team can give you advice on all aspects of your pet’s lifestyle to keep them feeling young!

ART OF AVALON A

QUIZ

See Matt’s art at: St. Margaret’s Chapel Almshouses from June 10-16 Visit: www.mattwittart.com

fter spotting Matt Witt’s artwork (one of which is on this month’s cover) we were determined to find out more. With a unique style and a fantastic use of colour, Glastonburybased Matt illustrates the landscape around him to stunning affect. He’s also a wizz with computers and websites and hosts a regular Tree Walk in Glastonbury, but more on that later…

Why do you do it?

Who are you?

What do you have coming up?

I am Matt Witt, artist, musician, tree walker; a human that likes to indulge in nature and his creativity. I live in Glastonbury and am originally from Salisbury. I am an honorary Bard of Ynis Witrin (Glastonbury), having been enrolled at the annual Gorseth last year.

What do you do? I have been dedicating art to Avalon since 2013, when I committed to drawing Glastonbury every day for a month – which turned into 56 days in total. Over time my primary medium has developed into the digital realm. I create graphical illustrative work inspired by regular walks around the Glastonbury countryside, as well as taking influence from internal experiences in dreams and meditation.

Expressing myself creatively is a behaviour that has been nurtured since childhood. It is the thing that comes most naturally to me, but it wasn’t until I met Avalon that I began to embrace it as a form of spiritual practice. I now work to merge these things, art, nature and spirituality, developing an ongoing collaboration with the landscape and community.

I am resident artist at the St Margaret’s Chapel Almshouses in Glastonbury from June 10-16. My work is currently available to purchase from the walls of Coffee Zero, on the High Street, as well as White Rabbit. You can buy prints online too at www.mattwittart.com.

Tree walks Join one of Matt’s inspirational walks into the countryside to meet some of the oldest living beings in Avalon. Matt ventures out around the island most weekends to visit the trees, sing some songs and be inspired by nature. Head to www.tothetrees.co.uk for more information.

festival of cider and cheese is coming to the garden of the Rose & Portcullis in Butleigh near Street on June 15. The Cider Box and Hecks are joining forces to celebrate our region’s greatest exports: fine cider and brilliant cheese, with a fun-packed day full of both, with a fine accompaniment from some of the best live music in the area. The local legends Hecks are fifth-generation cidermakers, and will be bringing a mouthwatering selection of their fine fermented juices, including rare single variety ciders, lip-smacking perrys, and fancy new blends, to be soaked up with a mountain of great cheese from producers across Somerset. The day will soundtracked with cracking live music from The Legendary SnakeSNAKESnake and John D Revelator, as well as the famous Cider Box Soundsystem. There will also be stonebaked pizzas and well-kept real ales from the innkeeper at the Rose & Portcullis, too. There’ll be free talks and tastings throughout the day, plus village fete classics including Bat The Rat and The Coconut Shy. We’ve also heard rumours of a Wurzels karaoke flashmob, and there’s even whispers of a secret gin bar…

John Challis, better known as Boycie from Only Fools and Horses, will be at the one-day show promoting his series of books. Stop by and you might be able to grab a quick selfie and signature! To get involved in this year’s show or to find out more, please contact Christine Barham on 01749 938044 or go to www.midsomersetshow.org.uk. Schedules for the dog show, horses, cheese, and arts and crafts are available online and from secretary@midsomersetshow.org.uk.

SUPER MARIO MAKER 2 FROM: Nintendo FORMATS: Switch

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too. RELEASED

JUN 28

A

ny new Mario game is cause for celebration, and this update for the Wii U and 3DS original takes the basic premise and adds enough new features to make it an essential purchase for Nintendo’s Switch. Simply put, you are able to create your own Mario levels and then share them online. What that means is that you suddenly have access to thousands of user-generated Mario levels – some of which easily rival some of Nintendo’s best ones. There’s also multiplayer support and even a single-player Story mode.
