uring the weekend of May 27-29, gardens across the country will be opening their gates for the National Garden Scheme (NGS) as part of its 90th Anniversary and Festival Weekend. The NGS was founded by the Queen’s Nursing Institute in 1927. In 1980 it was made an independent charity and in 2005 was made a charitable company. Since 1927 the NGS has donated more than £45 million to its nominated beneficiaries and partners – mainly Nursing Charities. There will be many hundred of gardens open countrywide. In Somerset, 11 gardens will be opening during the weekend, two of these gardens are themselves Group openings comprising 13 gardens between them.

GLASTONBURY RADIO TALK TALK

Glastonbury Town Council has approved the funding of an additional Police Community Support Officer. From this summer, an additional Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) will be working in Glastonbury – this will be in addition to the regular Police who patrol the town. Glastonbury currently has two beat managers and three PCSOs, and following a recruitment and training process, they will be joined by one more. The difference is that the additional PCSO is to be funded entirely by the town council. While employed by the police, he/she will be dedicated to Glastonbury, and only in an emergency will they be drawn away from the town. The Mayor, Cllr Jon Cousins, and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Emma George, have been working diligently for many months, initially raising the awareness of the police to some of the problems being experienced in the town. More recently, they have been working with the police to identify a solution to the shortfall of police presence.

Somerset Day is coming to Street! You can find out more about what’s on and when on page 27 this month, but we’re all looking forward to a packed day of events and fun for all the family. It’s also a great place to sell your products, so if you fancy setting up a stall on the day then the good news is that there’s still a few pitches left (at the time of writing this, anyway). If you’re interested then contact the Street Parish Council office on 01458 440588. The list of events planned for the day includes everything from Morris Men to the chance to meet King Alfred himself – and he’s not looking too bad for a man in his 1,168th year. There’s also going to be a Busk Stop, where acoustic musicians can showcase their own music or knock out a couple of cover versions. Again, contact the Council office if you’re interested in performing and they’ll give you all the information you need. The Street Somerset Day celebrations are sure to be one of the highlights of Street’s calendar, so make sure you keep Saturday, May 13 free and we’ll see you there.

n Monday, March 20, an assortment of past pupils, a member of staff, a parent and other visitors visited Crispin School to spend the day with a group of 28 pupils from years 7 to 9. They split off into groups of varying sizes, and some decided they wanted to work on their own, developing their performance skills while composing their own songs. Special thanks go to all the adults who offered their time and experience, and Lucy Ramsdale for assisting and helping the pupils. It’s very much appreciated that they gave up their time to help the next generation of musicians.

STEVE HENDERSON LAUNCHES DEBUT EP

It is set to be a massive year for local band Safehaus who are playing a variety of huge shows this year, including Godney Gathering, and at Cedars Hall supporting Red Sky July. Their single Leave It All featured in a gaming advert recently (Dark Souls 3, no less) which solidified their incredible writing talent. If you haven’t already checked them out then you are most definitely missing out. I am a huge fan of theirs and I can’t wait to see them sky rocket in to the recognition they so rightly deserve

FOCUS ON NEW COURSES

C

Charlie Taylor started it all for Chloe Dell. The BBC Somerset presenter began his now full-time broadcasting career as a volunteer with GFM and suggested 22-year-old Chloe try the same. She took Charlie’s advice, and her work with GFM has inspired her to start a one-year journalism course at the University of the West of England in Bristol. “At GFM I started by researching possible guests for Allan Trinder’s Community Show,” explained Chloe. “Then I began helping Allan present the show and coming up with ideas to make better use of our recorded material as well.” Her aim now is to enter sports journalism and end up at the BBC. She loves radio but likes TV, too. “I would recommend volunteering at GFM,” said Chloe.“Getting the chance to broadcast live on radio is a wonderful opportunity, and I have also learnt about the technical side. It is great fun.” Another skill Chloe has acquired is laughing sympathetically at Allan Trinder’s bad jokes… She also works one day a week at Millfield School, and as a volunteer fire steward at Glastonbury Festival. Sport is another interest, particularly playing hockey and cricket, as well as rowing. If you’re interested in becoming involved at GFM email admin@ glastonburyfm.org.uk. Philip Welch

STELLAR SCRIBES EVENTS IN MAY

E

ver wanted to write that book or just love reading and are interested in the writing process in general? Then come along to one of the Stellar Scribes events in May. Stellar Scribes is a group of five published authors living in mid-Somerset who write crime, romantic comedy, literary fiction and children’s books. You may know them already: Barbara Spencer, Anne Randall, Jan Ellis, Nikki Copleston and Sonja Price are offering workshops, panels and discussions on all aspects of creative writing. They have already appeared at Street and Glastonbury libraries in March and April, and are now lined up for panel discussions at Wells Library (Wednesday, May 10 from 2-4pm) and the ACE Arts Gallery in Somerton on Somerset Day (Thursday, May 11 from 3-5pm). Booking is advised but not essential.

The authors want to talk about their books and their diverse paths from solitary scribbling to bookshop. Is an agent necessary or can you approach publishers directly? In fact, is traditional publishing the answer or should writers self-publish? Stellar Scribes will also answer questions about their writing routine, their day jobs and their sources of inspiration. You will have a chance to talk to each author personally and also to buy signed copies of their books. So come along and meet the authors. They’d love to meet you too!

This year the course is running in the opposite direction to previous years and with some new fences, on the grounds at Millfield Prep. INTERVIEW: STEWART LEE

His Comedy Vehicle show was one of the funniest things on TV for years, and now Stewart Lee is headlining the Wells Comedy Festival this May. Here’s a rare opportunity to find out a bit more about the man and his method. Do you have much of a connection with Somerset? I went to Butlins as a kid with my mum, and to lots of All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals there in my 20s and 30s. You’ve been a stand-up for 28 years now, and you’ve won every award going. How do you find the will to keep going? Well, duty to the kids drives me forward. And it’s all I can do. I write more material than any other comparable stand-up, and I cover a lot of ground on the tours every year, but I am getting worn out. I started writing the new show in June and then Brexit happened. Brexit and Trump have made comics’ lives hard. How people are behaving is beyond satire, so what do you satirise? Your new live show is called Content Provider. What can people expect? Will it be the same as your BBC2 series Comedy Vehicle? Or will it be different? It’s very different. Comedy Vehicle was four series of six, 30-minute, self-contained sets. This is one, two-hour set, although I’ve had to keep the ideas and structure a little less rigid than usual to cope with the sudden surges in news events. Other shows you have been involved in have been very controversial, like Jerry Springer The Opera. Is the new show shocking? This show is, I suppose, ‘less shocking’ than usual. I think my core audience is having a bad time at the moment, so I feel it’s time to cheer them up, not engage in terrifyingly dark black comedy!

BASIS

THE

16

Your BBC2 show was cancelled in February after ten years and four multi-award winning series. Were you surprised? Not really. The BBC is facing massive cuts due to the government trying to systematically dismantle it, so something had to go from the comedy slate. Also, I’d done about all I could with that format. The truth is, financially I am better off touring that amount of material for two years, making a live DVD and then selling it to Netflix than I am giving more material away to BBC2 for less money. I am 48 with two kids and doing a job with no pension plan, so I need to be realistic about making hay while people want to have my hay. You’ve been described as ‘the comedian’s comedian’. Is that flattering? I don’t think it’s the case. I think most of the younger comedians seem to hate me, and because I’m not on the club circuit any more, and do my shows in theatres, I’m not part of any community. And none of the new ones know or see my stuff anyway, which is good I suppose, because if they did they would give up. What question have you never been asked in an interview that you wished you had? I don’t really like doing interviews so I’m happier not answering anything anyway! What are your plans for the future? I’m touring this Content Provider show until 2018, and then I’m supposed to be making a folk rock album

then I’m supposed to be making a folk rock album with the group Trembling Bells. I wrote a comedy drama about Brexit in September that is currently with a production company trying to find someone who’ll pay to make it. After the tour ends in the Summer of 2018 I’ll lie on the sofa for a bit and watch 1960s Italian Westerns. They’re all I’ve watched for the last few years really – I’ve see nearly 200. I like them because the directors and writers tried to slip weird, interesting and political things into them undercover of the movies being genre. I suppose that’s what I try to do with stand-up. At the end of the day it’s still just comedy, but maybe you can make it meet something better halfway. he date when Alfred the Great beat the Danes at the battle of Edington on May 11, AD 878, was chosen by Somerset residents as the date for Somerset Day. Street Parish Council are putting on a series of activities to celebrate on Saturday, May 13, including local produce sales, the Burnham Brass Band, a country dancing display and Morris Men. The fun kicks off at 10am and goes through until 4pm. It’ll be hard to miss the action too, as the events are being hosted at either the Crispin Centre or the Library Gardens. SPOTLIGHT

THE VILLAGE AGENT PROJECT

Our Community Spotlight feature continues with yet another brilliant local organisation doing incredible work in the community

F

or this month’ s Community Spotlight, we met with Heather Colman, a Village Agent based in Street and working to support people living in the local area. Heather works as part of the Village Agent Project which is managed by The Community Council for Somerset, a charity working to support community groups, organisations and individuals in Somerset. Village Agents help bridge the gap between individuals who feel isolated, excluded or vulnerable and services which can support them to resolve any challenges they may be facing. Heather describes the process: “When someone first contacts me, I arrange to meet them to find out what challenges they are facing. We will then discuss a way forward and work together to resolve any issues they may have. This may involve connecting them to an agency that can support them or providing up to date, correct information that can help them. The aim is to empower people and help them live independently and safely in their community for as long as possible.” All of the Village Agents live in or near to the area that they work in, which ensures they have good local knowledge and are well placed to connect people to the best service that can resolve their individual issue. They work with all ages, and people that are looking for assistance can contact their local

agent directly so there is no need for a referral from a professional. As well as helping individuals, Village Agents can also support local people to work together to respond to a local need, for example, by helping them to set up a coffee morning or car share scheme. Heather explains: “My aim is to support people to work together which helps create a strong, resilient community where the needs of the residents are met.” Heather works in the parishes of Baltonsborough, Butleigh, Glastonbury, Godney, Lydford on Fosse, Meare & Westhay, St. Cuthbert Out, Sharpham, Street, Walton, Wells, West Bradley, Westbury and Wookey. You can contact her by emailing heather@ somersetrcc.org.uk or telephoning 07908 160736.

THE

Orchard Vets is an RCVSaccredited small animal training practice. This means that we have both vets and nurses that act as clinical coaches for student veterinary nurses. Since 2007, Orchard Vets has proudly helped train more than 30 nurses. Veterinary nursing is now a recognised profession, with the nurses gaining specific qualifications that allow registration as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). There are two routes to becoming qualified as an RVN: vocational training, which means working in a veterinary practice while attending regular college days resulting in a L3 diploma, or studying full-time for a degree. As well as providing expert advice, RVNs can also perform minor surgery under the supervision of a vet. For example, when your pet comes in for a dental, the vet and nurse will work closely together, with the vet carrying out any extractions and the nurse performing the scaling and polishing. Veterinary nurses are trained to run nursing clinics, including clipping claws, microchipping, taking blood samples, weight management, advice on puppy and kitten care, guidelines on worming and flea treatment and bandage changes. One of their most valued roles is caring for your pets when they are staying with us as inpatients. Some of our critically ill patients require intensive care and management. They are ever-vigilant, checking drip lines, changing bedding, giving medications and most importantly providing that little extra TLC to make their stay as pleasant as possible.
