WELCOME! NOVEMBER 2016 #126
C
hristmas is just around the corner (and I’ve already had several present lists from my children!) but before we get caught up in all the excitement of the holiday period we’ve got the Carnival season to look forward to. So many people put in an incredible amount of work to make sure that, every year, you get a fantastic night of entertainment. From the carts to the dancers and other performers, it’s a huge amount of fun for all the family. Not only that, but we’ve also got the Frost Fayre in Glastonbury this month and the Christmas Cracker extravaganza in Street at the start of December. Looks like it’s going to be another busy month! Whichever Carnival you go to, make sure you bring loads of change with you, as these free events rely on your support to keep going, and with your donations, they’ll be able to continue for another 160 years! Here’s a breakdown of all the Carnivals coming to you in November: North Petherton – Saturday, November 12 Midsomer Norton – Monday, November 14 Shepton Mallet – Wednesday, November 16 Wells – Friday, November 18 Glastonbury – Saturday, November 19

THE
O
nce again it’s that time of the year where months of hard work are about to pay off, as the Carnival Clubs gather together to put on a spectacular show for us. There’s been a Carnival in Glastonbury for over 160 years now, and every year it seems to get bigger and even better. Around 100 entries start off at 7pm on the Relief Road, wind down to the Wyyral Park roundabout before heading up into town, along the High Street before ending on the Wells Road. All in all, it takes around four hours to get from start to finish, and the many thousands of visitors to the Carnival can look forward to around two hours of entertainment as the procession slowly moves past.

RADIO TALK
Not many teenagers secure an exclusive interview with Emily Eavis and messages from rap chart-topper Tinie Tempah. Back in February, Emily told GFM presenter Duncan Warnock before any other media that Muse would be Friday’s headliner at June’s Glastonbury Festival. Duncan is now 15 and was trained by GFM to become a radio presenter. He was only 13 when he approached one of GFM’s directors in 2014 to see if the station could further his interest in radio. Now Duncan has his own show called Connect, which broadcasts every Saturday from 9-10am. “I look at trends in music, technology and the Internet, with plenty of great songs,” said Duncan, a Year 11 student at Wells Blue School. It is aimed at teenagers and the young at heart. He recommends GFM to young people looking for radio training “especially if you are interested in music, music technology or just fundraising for a particular cause” – Duncan has raised more than £1,000 for a local charity. GFM has opportunities for people with all sorts of skills, as well as running a training programme. They include website design and maintenance, advertising, marketing and the technical side of radio. If you would like to get involved then simply email admin@ glastonbury fm.org.uk.

n Wednesday November 30, Travestees Comedy Club will be featuring four award-winning comics at Tor Leisure Centre in Glastonbury. Carey Marx makes a welcome return by popular demand. Carey has been a circuit favourite for many years, mixing his own blend of dark humour with his mischievous and gleeful delivery. His wilful disregard for the controversial and delicate is tempered beautifully by his ability to find joy in the most unexpected places. This hilarious mix of edgy topics and playful gagsmithery can be seen at all the top clubs around the world, and Carey regularly comperes many of the major festivals. Also on the bill will be the delightfully eccentric Harriet Dyer and ‘Amused Moose Laugh Off’ winner George Lewis (previous winners include Sarah Millican and Jack Whitehall). MC for the night is ‘heavily tattooed idiot’ Jim Smallman. Tickets are £10 on the door. 7.30pm (comedy starts at 8pm). www.travestees.com.
November 2016
We are blessed to have such rich and vibrant music flowing through our Mendips. Thankfully, no one is shy of putting it out there for us all to soak up, and there’s plenty of it to go around. For example, two hot acts in the area are releasing brilliant new music this month. The Bad Cowboys are first on the list with a blend of satire, poignant and, in their words, irrelevant music brought together in a shiny album that’s now available for our consumption. This music collaboration have been creating sweet sweet tunes for many years now so expect nothing short of quality and entertainment. At Home With the Bad Cowboys is available now! Fantastic news from camp Oska Zaky as he is set to release more music on November 18 at The Hawthorns. Since my first meeting with Oska I have been simply blown away by not only his raw talent, but his determination and his sparkling personality, making him a superb all-rounder. He won’t be on my ‘to watch’ list for too long though because within a couple of years everyone will know his name. Georgie Robbins

ABBEY RECREATES MEDIEVAL KITCHEN GARDEN
A
medieval kitchen garden in the style once seen hundreds of years ago at Glastonbury Abbey is to be recreated. Centuries ago the Abbey would have grown its own produce for use within the Abbot’s Kitchen, which catered for the Abbot and his high-status guests, such as the Royal family of the time, as well as to feed the monks and employees. The plan to recreate the garden is the brainchild of learning assistant Luke Loader. The project was formally launched on October 20 at the Abbey. “We hope to have the garden created and growing crops by next summer,” says Luke, “and we plan to use the garden to help schools and visitors learn about seasonality of produce and how people grew what they ate. We will also use some of the produce in the Abbot’s Kitchen.

LOCAL HERO
PAM WALKER
With a love of shoes and Medieval history, you could say that Pam Walker has the perfect job…
T
November 2016
The Museum Officer of The Shoe Museum, Dr. Pam Walker. Running the Museum is a demanding job, and aside from the constant displays (including a Roman sandal that was excavated from the Roman villa at Low Ham, and a range of Medieval shoes, too), there’s also the regular exhibitions to organise. Currently, and running up until the end of the year, the Shoe Museum has a display of shoes from the time of William Shakespeare – to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death. Next year is the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen, and the Shoe Museum will be remembering the famous writer with a stunning exhibition of some of the classic footwear of the period. ‘Shoe Heaven – A Day in the Life of a Shoe Museum Curator’ is being held at the Methodist Church Hall, Leigh Road, Street on Tuesday, November 22 at 7.30pm. Tickets are just £2 each to non-members of the Street Society. For more information on the Shoe Museum, head to www.the-shoe-museum.org.
BASIS 11
THE
he history of Street’s shoemaking heritage is obviously very well known, and the perfect way to find out more is to visit the brilliant Shoe Museum on the High Street – which is free to enter, and also offers a range of family activities during holidays, which are also free. Over the last four years the Museum Officer has been Dr. Pam Walker, who’s giving an informative talk on her role at the Methodist Church Hall on November 22. We thought that was the perfect opportunity to find out more about Pam and her fascinating job. Pam’s had a love of the area since visiting Glastonbury Abbey as a child and then, six years ago, she finally moved to the town for good. Pam, who’s originally from Cheshire, was a journalist for a number of years and also has a PHD in Medieval Art History. She’s worked in various museums for over 10 years though, and with a natural love of historic items (as well as shoes!) Pam thinks she’s got the perfect job.

og and Sprocket are an independent bike shop with over 20 years’ experience. Their shop was previously located in South Petherton, but after looking for larger premises, they’ve settled in nicely in their new home on the High Street – in what was previously ‘On Your Bike’. As well as an impressive range of mountain bikes, road bikes and kids’ bikes from respected brands such as Tifosi and Orbea, they’ve also got an excellent range of helmets, clothing, parts and accessories – the perfect place for Christmas presents for your bike-riding friends or family! If your bike just needs a bit of TLC, then Cog and Sprocket also has a full workshop facility with a range of servicing options – and you can take your bike along for a free no-obligation quote, too. The shop also has gift vouchers to purchase
and even a range of electric bikes. Whatever your biking needs are though, we recommend paying them a visit soon, as it’s a stunning shop that caters perfectly for those of us that love all things two-wheeled. fter the success of last year’s event, Street Parish Council are delighted to be running their Christmas Cracker extravaganza again on Thursday, December 1 from 4pm to 9pm. The High Street will be closed off, along with a section of Farm Road, and the event will include a wide range of market stalls, as well as the shops (which will be all opening late), live entertainment and the Magical Wishing Tree for children in the Crispin Centre Courtyard. Santa Claus himself will be appearing in his Grotto, and it’s the perfect all-round opportunity to get some Christmas Shopping done, sing a Christmas Carol or two and enjoy a delicious warm cider from Hecks. The night of the Christmas Cracker will also see the launch of the Teddy Bear Window Competition. Pictures of the Teddy (see the picture below) have
been placed in shop windows in the town, and you’ve got until December 23 to find them all and enter a draw to win a Christmas hamper! You can pick up an entry form on the night. There’s still space for stall holders, so if you’d like to join in the fun then please email assistant@streetpc.gov.uk.

CARING IN THE COMMUNITY
O
ver its 16-year history, Somerset Care and Repair has had to change with the times. In addition to our core work helping the elderly and disabled to stay independent, we have expanded and diversified our service provision to help bring empty properties back into use for those in greatest housing need, recycle unwanted building materials, and at the same time help to support and train the long term unemployed and ex-offenders. Somerset Care and repair offer a number of services throughout Somerset. We supply a full range of adaptations to keep its clients mobile and independent in and around their homes. From wet rooms to full house extensions, stair lifts to access ramps, kitchen installs to roof repairs, SC&R offer any building or adaptation service you may require, and we only use trusted contractors to ensure there are no instances of ‘cowboy builders’ turning up at your door. And we project manage each case to ensure you’re happy with the quote, workmen and service you receive. We are experts in stair lifts and can offer straight lifts from only £1,100 new or £850 reconditioned (subject to availability). With our in-house design and installation team, we will provide a free stair lift survey and offer advice on the best lift available to suit your requirements. To see the range of lifts we offer visit www.somerset-stairlifts.co.uk. SC&R services are available to anyone, whether you have a disability or not. We can carry out private work or, if you qualify, are able to provide services under the Disabled Facilities Grant Scheme.

A Short Walk to Asney Got half an hour to kill? We’ve got the perfect walk for you
A
t the end of Gravenchon Way, which goes between Lidl and Sainsbury’s in Street, there is a stile. If you have some time to kill while waiting for somebody doing a lot of shopping, or perhaps need to exercise your dog, this is an excellent short walk, as it can be completed in about half an hour. Climb over the stile and follow the path straight ahead, until you come to a bridge over the stream on your left with metal gates at either end. After crossing this bridge, turn right. At the corner of the field there is a wooden bridge with stiles at either end. Crossing the second stile, there are three different paths to choose from, take the one on your right – you can see the next stile to head for in the hedge. Turn left after this, negotiating two more stiles will bring you to the small hamlet of Asney. Turn right, and follow the road. To your right is Asney Farm – some wooden remains were unearthed here in 1991, which are possibly part of a prehistoric

trackway. Further up the road, the driveway on the left is one of the entrances to Sharpham Park, which dates back to the Bronze Age. The 300-acre estate was conferred by King John to the Abbots of Glastonbury, until the dissolution of the monasteries. The high fences are there because it is a deer park, and you may be lucky enough to see some. On the right hand side of the road, opposite the Sharpham Park driveway, there is another stile. From here the path continues diagonally across this field. In the next field, there is a stile beside a gate in the hedge on your left. Climb this, and walk towards the row of bungalows, emerging in Houndwood Drive. Turn right along the road, and as you round the corner you will see the next footpath signposted on the right. This will lead you behind Sainsbury’s, and back to where you started. If you do the walk at the right time of the year then you might be lucky enough to bring back a large bounty of blackberries with you too!

The Importance of Posture Without good posture your overall health and total efficiency may be compromised, as the long-term effects of poor posture can start to affect digestion and breathing, as well as effecting muscles and ligaments. Poor posture can make a person feel fatigued and unable to work efficiently.
Poor posture and pain symptoms
Fatigue – Poor posture can cause our muscles to work so much harder so you are wasting energy just by moving. Tight, achy muscles – You may feel tightness in muscles and ligaments. 80% of neck and back problems are caused by years of bad posture. Joint stiffness and pain – Poor posture and limited mobility can increase the likelihood of ‘wear and tear’. Range of movement – This can become limited as muscles and ligaments can be permanently shortened or stretched.
Tips to help improve posture
Keep weight down – Excess weight around the stomach can pull on the back, weakening your core. Regular exercise – Such as a circuit-based class can keep you flexible and toned. Straighten up and be posture aware – Hold your head high, shoulders back, chest out and stomach tucked. Regular massage – This can prevent tight and achy muscles and improve flexibility and mobility. Studio 10 can offer classes and sports massage to help address and rectify any posture problems that you may have.
