THE LIGHT FANTASTIC!

The Carnival is about to roll into town…

D

id you know that the illuminated carts can be up to 100 feet in length, 16 feet high, 11 feet wide and contain up to a staggering 30,000 light bulbs? Every year the amazing Carnival carts (don’t whatever you do call them floats!) seem to get better, more elaborate, and even more beautifully designed. Carnival season is here again, and the fruits of the labours of all the amazing local Carnival clubs will soon be heading to a location near you. As always, don’t forget to bring lots of spare change with you. Carnivals are some of the best free entertainment around, but they do rely on your support to be able to continue year after year. So make sure you get your programme, and if you’re able to donate just a £1 (at least!) each, then you can help to ensure that the Carnivals will be around for many more years to come. THE

Regular home care is important to prevent tartar build up, gum disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is one of the most common health conditions in pets, and untreated leads to painful infection in your pet’s mouth. Animals rarely show overt pain – usually only after dental treatments will owners comment how much happier their pet seems. Come in to see one of our trained veterinary nurses for a FREE dental check to examine your pet’s mouth and discuss home care to prevent periodontal disease. The best thing for your pet’s teeth, just like ours, is regular brushing. This needs to be at least 2-3 times per week to be effective, and like everything else, it can be easier to get pets to accept this when they are young. However, older dogs and cats can still be trained to enjoy having their teeth brushed. You will need a pet-specific toothpaste though, as human toothpaste isn’t very good for animals. If brushing isn’t possible for you and your pet, there’s a wide variety of other products that can help keep pets’ teeth healthy, from special foods which clean as they chew, to dental treats, to additives and to drinking water. If an animal is suffering from periodontal disease, that needs to be treated by a vet under anaesthesia. While the pet is asleep, their mouth is examined

INTERVIEW ANDREW HARDWICK

We catch up with the latest artist to have their work exhibited at the Atkinson Gallery

A

ndrew Hardwick is an artist from Bristol, and the latest in a long line of original and talented artists to have an exhibition at Millfield School’s Atkinson Gallery in Street. The exhibition of Andrew’s work runs from November 4 until December 7, and we thought it would be good to find out more about Andrew’s work and what to expect from the exhibition itself… We love the way you use objects and textures to create your art work. Could you explain a little more about your style and why you choose to create in the style you do. I have been working with paint and collage materials for a long time. My work comes from trying to find a powerful and personal way of

feeling the landscape, rather than a particular style. However I have wanted to find a gritty way/style of explaining my landscapes. Working on a farm by the sea, there are lots of collage materials that can be worked into suitable surfaces. These materials are not necessarily from the location they depict, their purpose is more to give a sense of time, surface, layers and memory. Often I also seek an awkwardness in the landscape. A landscape not composed and measured, but raw and powerful. You live in an area surrounded by industry and countryside. Are these extremes important to your work? The landscape around me has seen rapid change. The ruins of the old heavy industry, redundant Wartime facilities and the wilderness that surrounded them I knew so well have gone. They’ve been replaced by massive modern new docks, relief roads, motorways and enormous housing estates. Even the newly formed nature reserves are controlled and sanitised. Certainly because of this, I feel deeply the transient nature of the landscape; one that is also filled with memories. Is there a particular theme to this Atkinson Gallery Show? The Show is a mixture of the landscapes I paint, from very large triptychs to very small textural studies. Some of the work is inspired by walks across Dartmoor, others from the Severn Estuary.

Seven or eight pieces are purely from memory. They are of merchant ships now long gone, making progress westward from Avonmouth Docks, titled ghost ships. It is important for me that most of the work should be new, so in a sense it is a workshop of current ideas. What do you hope people get from the exhibition? A feeling of the power of the landscape. Its emotion and wonder. Hopefully both the large and small paintings will suck the viewer into their surface and depths. Although some may seem dark and muted, hopefully people will enjoy the muted colours and

a sense of the wild and the weather in which roads and civilisation do not always totally dominate. More information on all exhibitions at the Atkinson Gallery can be found from atkinsongallery@ millfieldschool.com, www.atkinsongallery.co.uk, @galleryatkinson or 01458 444322.

The Shepton Experience!

The new and improved Shepton Sunday Market restarts this month!

T

he monthly Sunday market held around the market cross in the centre of Shepton Mallet will now be run by a new company set up by a group of Shepton Mallet residents. Jude Jackson, a spokesperson for the group, says, “Our primary aim is to carry out events which will benefit the community of Shepton Mallet, with particular emphasis on the regeneration of the town centre. The Shepton Experience will strive to be ‘not just a market’ but a monthly event incorporating live music, street performances, themed attractions and fun competitions. “We have decided that these will be run on the last Sunday of each month, running from March through to November, with two additional special events. One to coincide with the very successful Snowdrop Festival on the appropriate Sunday of February and the other to coincide with the weekend event of the Lantern Parade on the appropriate Sunday of December. “The continued success of the market is reliant on the support of the local and surrounding community, and we also welcome all independent and suitcase traders in the area to come and trade with us.” The first Sunday event will be ‘Shepton’s Christmas’ on November 24 (10am-3pm). You can expect the usual Christmas cheer, the chance to see Father Christmas, plenty of stalls to get that perfect gift (with new and returning traders) and more. Lots of shops and cafés will also be open to compliment the market, and there will be free parking, too! This is followed by a ‘Victorian Fayre’ on December 22 (10am-3pm), which will complement the Lantern Parade taking place on Saturday December 21. Another great weekend event in Shepton Mallet to look forward to. So make a date in your diary and tell your friends and family.

You can find more details of these events on the new Facebook/Instagram page: @thesheptonexperience, on the Website: www.thesheptonexperience.co.uk or by email: info@thesheptonexperience.co.uk.

a touch of frost If you’ve never checked out Glastonbury’s Frost Fayre then you’re in for a treat

F

or us at the Basis office, it never quite feels like Christmas until we’ve been to the Frost Fayre in Glastonbury. Yep, there’s usually a fairly bitter nip in the air, but the warm welcome from the Fayre itself more than makes up for it. Everything kicks off at 10 in the morning, going all the way through until 7 in the evening. And there’s no shortage of things to do. For starters you have 140 Frost Fayre stalls, selling pretty much anything you can possibly imagine – and, we suspect, a few things that you probably couldn’t. On top of that, you have 15 Farmers Market stalls and Christmas Markets, too. Aside from the traders though, there’s also Father Christmas and his helper Fairies and Elves, and buskers and live entertainment on throughout the day. There will be noticeboards at the various stages throughout the Fayre letting you know who’s playing and when. When you get peckish then you can pick up something to eat from either the stalls themselves or the many cafés and restaurants dotted throughout the town. You can pick up a business Map at the

Phoenix Rises Again! The Avalon Phoenix Players are back with a new production…

F

ollowing the success of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in March 2019, local amateur theatre group the Avalon Phoenix Players return with an enchanting dramatic comedy for Christmas – Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Sir Gawain is adapted from an anonymous medieval poem, beloved of JRR Tolkien: a tale of knights of Camelot, challenged on Christmas Eve to complete a Quest: find the monstrous and magical creature, the Green Knight. Writer Lee Housley says, “The Green Knight poem has a wonderfully mystical medieval flavour, both familiar and sometimes alien to the modern reader. This unique take on the story is full of wry spirit for the festive season, affectionately playing with the atmosphere of the poem. We have a brave young knight, an arrogant older knight badgering his every step, a larger-than-life Lord, a deeply unfunny Fool, a drunken Bishop, and a timelessly embarrassing mother… it’s a fine comedy with a heart firmly in Avalon!” The Green Knight is being performed in support of Glastonbury Bridging the Gap (GBG), a registered charity who oversee the provision of food parcels to those in need, and emergency shelter packs for

the homeless, containing items such as blankets and warm clothing. At Christmas, GBG help make sure the most vulnerable residents of Glastonbury have enough to eat, at what can, for some, be a particularly difficult time of year. Audiences are asked, if they can, to bring donations of non-perishable food, and there will be a cash collection box. “Come and see this brilliant creation put on by your friends, family and neighbours!” says Lee. “Take part in the fun with us; laugh and gasp, and maybe even drink some mulled wine in the interval. You’ll be glad you did! It’s going to be unforgettable.” Tickets are £10 and available from The Speaking Tree on Glastonbury High Street, or online via avalonphoenixplayers.weebly.com.

Limited Early bird tickets are £18, then Tier 1 – £20, Tier 2 – £25, Tier 3 – £28. Tickets available online soon!

f you’ve been one of the lucky ones to have joined in the festivities and Christmas dining at Bocabar before, rest assured it’s going to be another great choice for Christmas lunches, dinners, cocktails and music again this year. Bocabar will be sparkling with christmas pompoms, glitzy decorations and swags of feather bowers. Matt Brooks heads up the menu, with seasonal dishes sourced from the very best local and small suppliers – not forgetting too that Bocabar has attained Taste of the West Gold awards for the last three years in a row! For a bit of a Christmas jiggle, there are some key events on in December, ideal for friends and work outings, so best to get tickets in advance. kicking off the season is the Beans on Toast gig on Thursday, December 5, followed by Dr Meaker & House of Commoners on Friday 6. TIME FOR HEROES

We speak to Shane Green about his charity, Stoma Heroes, and why he set it up…

S

hane Green of the Stoma Heroes charity explains what made him set up the group that regularly meets at the Crispin Centre in Street: “In 2017 I had two lifesaving operations due to perforation of the bowel. When I awoke from the first procedure I had an ileostomy (stoma). I had no preparation for life with a stoma and, at that time, felt quite self-conscious and lonely. “Having recovered from my procedure, and my new life with a stoma, I made a decision to reach out to others in my situation with the intention of starting a social/help group. I gained access to other people in my position and, as a result, now have around 15 members who meet once a month, currently at the Crispin Centre in Street. It is a light-hearted group and not all members will turn up every month so we

have around 6 to 10 people at any one time comparing experiences. This has proved helpful to me and my new friends, normalising the life we now live. I am expecting an increase in numbers as we go forwards. “Occasionally we have a stoma nurse attending meetings which has proved invaluable for those who may need help or product advice. “If you are interested in joining us please contact me via email or mobile – shane@stomaheroes.com/ 07802 428074. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and at www.stomaheroes.com.

SPOTLIGHT ON STREET NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

We find out more about the essential link between residents and the Police…

T

he Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) has been in existence for nearly 40 years now, and has been in Street since 1996. It’s a communitybased project supported by local Police, and its aims are to reduce crime, to assist the police in detecting crime, to reduce undue fear of crime, and to improve police and community liaison.

It’s the most successful crime prevention initiative ever, helping to protect individuals and property, and reduce the fear of crime. Develops close liaison between the community and the Police. Helps residents protect themselves and their properties, knowing that neighbours are looking out for the unexpected. Encourages greater vigilance, fast and accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police, and fosters community spirit. Specific problems can be targeted such as vandalism, burglary, anti-social behaviour, street lighting, parking, scams, cold calling, etc. Street Neighbourhood Watch Association (SNWA) was set up in 2000 and provides a link between the various schemes in the village and the local Police, as well as with other organisations such as Street Parish Council. The Association’s mission statement is ‘Crime cannot flourish in a community that cares’, and it’s important to remember that Street is a safe place to live, but residents should never be complacent. Although Street is a No Cold Calling Zone, all residents need to remain vigilant about such activity including

November 2019

unsolicited salespeople and bogus workmen who trick people into having unnecessary work done at extortionate prices. An area of ever-growing concern is that of telephone and Internet-based scams of varying types, and the Association is able to provide information on what to be looking out for. NHW schemes are based on individual roads, and it’s very east to set up a scheme in your own road. A group of residents can approach the Police to set up a scheme, with one person agreeing to be the coordinator who acts as the link between the scheme and the police. SNWA will give total support to any scheme both during its set-up and going forward. For further information, visit the SNWA website www.streetneighbourhoodwatch.btck.co.uk or call David Atkins on 01458 443055.

Christmas at Stephens Butchers

I

t’s hard to believe that we are once again thinking about Christmas but it’s just around the corner so we need to start planning! The Christmas Day meal is the centrepiece of the holiday and on this day more than any other day of the year you need to know that the meat you buy is going to be the best you can possibly get. At Stephens Butchers we pride ourselves on being able to provide that extra special bird or joint while bearing in mind that our customers deserve value for money, especially at an expensive time of year like this. Let’s start with the birds: We have free-range bronze turkeys from Wedmore and free-range geese, ducks and chickens from Huish Episcopi near Langport. All our beef is Aberdeen Angus reared in Wick, Glastonbury. The meat is hung for 3 to 4 weeks, and you have a choice of sirloin, rib on the bone, rolled rib, topside, silverside, brisket or anything else you fancy at a price to suit your budget. Our pork is all outdoor-reared from two farms near Taunton. We have free-range dry-cured bacon from Wiltshire, and our lamb is from farms in Shapwick and Walton. Added to this we have locally produced mature cheddar, locally made pickles and chutneys, home-

cooked meats and pies and much, much more. Please pop into our shop in Glastonbury for a chat or ring 01458 832091. You can also check us out at www.stephensbutchers.co.uk.

STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDER

RELEASED

NOV 15

FROM: EA FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One, PC

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

D

espite having one of the best possible licences behind it, the vast majority of Star Wars games to date have mostly failed to do the film series justice. EA are hoping to change all that with Fallen Order, a third-person Action/Adventure game set shortly after Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. You play a young Jedi who escaped the cull but is now being hunted by an inquistor trained by Vader himself. Fallen Order has been developed by Respawn Entertainment (responsible for the excellent Titanfall games) and the initial gameplay videos look encouraging. We’re keeping everything crossed that this could be one of the finest Star Wars games yet seen.
