WELCOME! OCTOBER 2016 #125
N
othing sums up the enthusiasm and creativity of the area more than the annual Glastonbury Zombie Walk. One day a year the High Street is closed off and all manner of the undead shuffle, crawl and groan their way through the town. And some of the outfits look truly stunning! And the fact that the whole event is a fundraiser for a local charity is just the icing on the cake. The nights may be drawing in and there’s a definite chill in the air, but there’s still plenty of top events, gigs, shows and fairs to keep you entertained through the autumn months. And, best of all, they’re all featured in these very pages. Hope you find something fun to do and see you again next month. Dean Mortlock, Editor

hursday October 6 is National Poetry Day, and Street Library and the Wells Journal’s Clare Blackmore are hosting an event between 2-3pm where they’ll share poetry by Somerset’s own Victorian poet, William Calcott.
CRISPIN COMMUNITY FOCUS
Everyone at GFM is delighted that the station’s new aerial has been successfully installed. “The vast majority of our listeners are now able to get a stronger signal,” said GFM studio manager Bob Lloyd, who is pictured above, “and I am so pleased that the whole saga is complete at last.” BT’s months of delays and confusion in installing the necessary broadband line have caused Bob enormous frustration and the loss of already scanty hair… “Their various engineers and managers did not appear to communicate with each other,” explained Bob. “BT’s delays just went on and on.” However everything is now working and Bob would like to thank the following: Our MP James Heappey who wrote to BT on the station’s behalf in August and stirred them into a sense of urgency with Bob getting regular calls from their chairman’s office. The Mendip Local Legacy Fund which provided most of the money for the better aerial. GFM’s volunteers who helped to raise the rest of the money.

MUSIC TALK
Oxjam is on its way around to us quite rapidly, and this year we are being blessed with an absolute corker of an event that involves a punk rock throwback, a lot of noise and one hell of a good time. 40 years of punk will be held at The King Arthur on October 22, with the promise of a few surprises on the night. Joining the bill are the likes of 50 Shades of Punk and The Setbacks, who will show us just why punk will never die. Not only will it be a night of nostalgia but a chance to raise some funds for an important cause. One of my absolute favourite local bands, Marsh Fires, have been spotted back in the studio and I couldn’t be more excited for this. It has been a number of years since I was introduced to these guys, who coincidentally have played at a couple of my events before, and are complete gentlemen, talented and such dedicated guys to work with. And lastly The Shires are on course to release their second album – and early previews are promising a stellar follow up to Brave. Former local boy Ben Earle has had incredible success in this record-breaking Country duo. I am so honoured to have followed them on their journey. Georgie Robbins

Despite his song I can’t get a gig at Glastonbury This Year, singer-songwriter Beans on Toast is coming down for a very special performance…

means that he’s built up a solid fan base over the years. “Regardless of whether my song is about chicken farming or how much I love my wife, it’s clear what the song’s about because the lyrics aren’t shrouded in any kind of mysterious poetry. It’s ‘say what you see’ kind of music. It’s the way I’ve always done it, and it’s the only way I know how.” Born on December 1, Beans releases an album every year on his birthday, and his eighth, A Spanner in the Works, promises something a little different. “It’s a bit of a different-sounding record because I made it on a laptop. It’s still very much a Beans on Toast record because the simple songs are there, but it’s got some different ideas going on musically.” If you fancy checking out his sound for yourself, then we recommend heading to beansontoastmusic. com to be a good starting point, as there are plenty of links to Beans’ music. Finally, we had to ask… what’s with the name? “We could’ve spent half out lives sat in a pub coming up with imaginary band names, but I think that Beans on Toast is quite descriptive of the music I make: Easy, Cheap and English.”

riginally down to play at this year’s Godney Gathering, a family illness meant that ‘Drunk Folk’ legend Beans on Toast was unable to play. Rather than disappoint all the people looking forward to seeing him, he’s rescheduled for a very special gig at the Bocabar on October 21. He’s a busy man, but we did manage to grab him for a brief chat to find out more about his connections with the area. “I’ve got a lot of love for Glastonbury,” says Beans on Toast (real name Jay McAllister). “I’ve been going to Glasto since I was 16, and I’ve never missed one. As corny as it sounds, it really did change my life. When I first started going, the only way I could get there was to hitch down. I’d get there really early and spend a week in Glastonbury town camping underneath the Tor! “I’ve played the festival for the last 6-7 years. This year my show was at the Avalon Stage, which was quite a step up from what they had been. It was the best gig I’ve ever played, basically.” Beans is incredibly laid back and amiable. Born in Essex and still living in London, he sings from the heart about love, politics and how wonderful (or not) the world can be. His easy-going nature and natural warmth

here are many ways you can celebrate Halloween, but one of the best and most original must surely be to take part in the Glastonbury Zombie Walk on October the 22nd. Kicking off the Halloween celebrations in style, the roads close in the town at 5pm, but if you head up to the Avalon Constitutional Club from 3.30pm onwards, then there’s plenty of opportunity to dress up and get your face painted – so you don’t even have to come dressed as a zombie to join in! Local dance company Mean Feet are even choreographing a zombie dance, and there’s a party at the Constitutional Club starting at 6pm.

EVENT TO MARK ANNIVERSARY
T
his October, Street Harvest Church are celebrating five years of their community programme in the Upper Room at the Crispin Hall. Although we will be giving thanks for all the good things that have been provided, meeting practical needs and making the programme possible, it is the people of the community that we will be celebrating. Over the last five years we have met hundreds of incredible, diverse, individuals. Each one has been a blessing as they’ve shared part of their journey with us, and the Street Harvest Church family has grown and connected with every part of the local community. As we remember the stories and faces of the last five years, we will also be thinking about the wider Harvest Church story from our 23rd year as a local church. It’s been a great year. Since our last anniversary we’ve had our largest fireworks party ever, book launches, Christmas events, the pop-up CREATE:SPACE
gallery, the Valentine’s weekend, baptisms, BBQ’s, our Charmouth holiday, and so many small stories from the daily experience of sharing life together. We didn’t get here on our own. If it’s been good, it is because God did it, and we can’t wait to see what God has in store for the next part of our story.

His work is passionate and dramatic, with charcoal being used as the basis for much of his artwork, overlaid with different media such as acrylic paint, pastel and graphite powder. “Some might think that a landscape that is predominantly flat can be dull and featureless,” says Matthew, “but I feel that the more I draw it I am getting nearer to the essence of the land, establishing a greater understanding of its changes as the seasons pass.” Whether you’re aware of Matthew work, or new to the local art scene, we strongly recommend checking out this stunning exhibition.

WORKSHOPS WITH LOCAL ARTIST
I
nterested in learning some watercolour techniques in a relaxed and friendly environment? If so, then local Glastonbury artist Jackie Henderson has the perfect course of workshops for you. Jackie’s course of six Watercolour Workshops have been designed to guide you through some basic techniques and give you the confidence to ‘have a go’ at some of the more challenging aspects of watercolour painting. They’re ideal for complete beginners, or those wishing to progress a little further with their painting. The workshops are held at Jackie’s own stunning house in Glastonbury, run from 9.30am to 3.30pm and cost just £35 per session. There’s a 10% discount if you book all six workshops, but you’re free to book any number of individual ones if you’d prefer. The classes are limited to a maximum of eight people, so we recommend you contact Jackie as soon as possible if
you’re interested, as they’re sure to book up fast. The first workshop is in January, and is a gentle introduction to watercolour techniques. The workshops then run monthly until June, and cover topics such as still life, natural colours, and landscapes. For more information on Jackie’s courses, you can either phone her on 07896 104405, or email her on jhenderson13@fsmail.net. There’s also a leaflet available from various outlets in the town (including Glastonbury Galleries) detailing all aspects of the individual courses.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM ANXIETY?
K
irstie Salter, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist from My Mind Solutions explains how we can create anxiety and how we can learn to control it… “Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways. You may find that, for no reason, your heart starts pounding, you’re struggling to breathe, you break out in a sweat or you’re shaking. “It’s natural to feel anxious some of the time, as we live in a society where great demands are placed on us. Most of us can relate to feeling tense at the thought of going into hospital, taking a driving test, attending an interview or sitting exams. Even during exciting times such as going on holiday, having a baby or getting married. But when we produce too much anxiety, it can spiral out of control and it can be problematic, so we become less able to cope in everyday situations. “It may be something that happens gradually, or maybe it presents itself through an unforeseen event that happens out of the blue. Sometimes we can suffer with continuous, low-grade anxiety, where we start to wonder whether we’ll ever feel normal again.
It’s important to realise that anxiety is not a sign a weakness, it’s simply a response to stress.”
Mindful Techniques Kirstie has a hugely successful track record in helping clients to correct this by using solution-focused hypnotherapy. “By introducing neuroplasticity with the use of guided visualisation (hypnosis), clients are able to feel calm and in control again, as well as boosting confidence and empowering them to focus in a positive way.” To find out more, or to book an initial consultation contact Kirstie Salter at My Mind Solutions on 07966 517708 or email kirstie@mymind.solutions. LOCAL HERO
IAN LIVERSIDGE
This month it’s the turn of GFM’s Thursday Live presenter Ian Liversidge to get the Local Hero treatment…
A
nyone who’s caught Ian’s show on Thursday evenings between 7pm-9pm will already know that he’s a man with his finger on the local music scene. A mixture of classic and modern Indie music, it’s peppered with tunes from local artists, as well as regular guests that pop in for sessions and conversation. Ian can regularly be spotted at local gigs and also launched the Glastonbury Calling one-day event this year, which raised an impressive £1,500 to help fund the running of GFM. Ian’s been hosting his popular show for around five years now, and has been a fan of the local music scene for much longer than that. After managing a butter factory in Baltonsborough – where they produced a staggering 100 tons of butter a month! – Ian and his family took over the running of the King Arthur pub in Glastonbury, where they helped to build up the trade and also create a leading venue for bands in the area. But not many people may know that Ian was actually in a band when he originally lived in Chippenham. Called Nobody’s Heroes, they were a punk band that became well-known on the local

Ian and some of his guests at the GFM studio. scene. Ian was the singer in the band and, in his own words, “Jumped up and down and shouted like an idiot!” Ian’s punk roots have inspired him to arrange the Glastonbury Rebellion event on October 22 at the King Arthur. Playing live will be The Setbacks and 50 Shades of Punk, with DJ Dr. Amaqueen playing some excellent vinyl, too. Proceeds from the event will go towards the extremely worthy Oxjam charity. Glastonbury Calling will also be running again next year – on February 25. Spread over five pubs (the Riflemans, King Arthur, Hawthorns, Bocabar and Market House), the music starts at Midday and plays through until 1am. A £10 ticket will get you entry to all five venues throughout the day and, once again, all proceeds will go to GFM. If you want to listen to the show yourself (and we strongly recommend that you do), you can tune into GFM on a Thursday night (7-9pm) at 107.1FM. The show is repeated on a Sunday between 2-4pm, and you can listen to past shows online too, at www.mixcloud.com/Livers.
