S
o autumn is officially here, the trees are trashing the ground with their summer foliage and the evenings are crisper than a brand-new Fiver, but there’s lots of things to look forward to. There’s something big happening around the 25th of December (more on that next month) but before then there’s all manner of nightly bumping going on, with parties, fairs, zombieness and general all-round monstery goodness happening towards the end of the month. We’ve rounded up a find selection of Halloween events to keep you, friends and little ones amused and maybe ever-so-slightly scared. Have a cracking month and see you in a month’s time for more of the same…

usician – and certainly not athlete – friends Andy and Sonny have just set off cycling from England to Oslo in Norway, raising money and awareness for mental health, suicide prevention and bereavement charities – ones that are very close to their hearts. The pair are part of a team of three, named ‘Most Roads Lead To’, who raised £5,000 completing a demanding 2,000 kilometre ride to Rome back in April, which saw them face injuries, an avalanche, a blizzard and a buckled wheel. FREE WORKSHOPS AT THE ART BANK
C
ome along and enjoy some mood-boosting creativity and friendly conversation at the Art Bank in Shepton Mallet, as they begin their series of free arts and craft workshops. Local artist Mandy McKenna, who led their wonderful Cheshire Cat workshops for the Art Bank’s Alice In Rubbishland exhibition, will help you make African-style masks from recycled materials. After being used for the Art Bank’s Festival of Death and Dying masquerade in November, you will be able to take your mask home. You can attend all six workshops if you wish to create an intricate mask or just one or two if you are happy with something more simple. These are dropin workshops but it would be helpful if you could let the Art Bank know you are planning to attend. The mask workshops are completely free and are being hosted every Tuesday throughout
October between 11am-1pm at the Art Bank. They also have a free arts and crafts workshop on Wednesdays in October too, and this one runs from 1pm-3pm.

A UNIQUE MUSICAL COMBO!
B
araka is a unique combination of musicians from Ghana, Senegal, Dominica, Trinidad and Southern Ireland, and you’ll get to find out exactly how unique they are when they play at the Bocabar/Red Brick Building on Saturday, October 12. Each musician contributes his individual sound and style - Reggae featuring a Kora and Djembe, Township with a Calypso bassline, Hilife with Blues Harmonica, Soca with Balafon and Flute. Baraka features musical collaborations that you are unlikely to hear with any other band. This is not just one person’s music translated by backing musicians, as so many ‘world’ music bands seem to be. Baraka is edgy, experimental and innovative without losing sight of the fact that entertainment is the key. Fronted by the great Ben Baddoo’s vocals and percussion, Baraka make vibrant pan-African music
with a Caribbean undertow, plenty of rhythm and a rich instrumental sound that takes you from Kingston to Kinshasa and back again. Tickets will be £5 in advance or £7 on the door. This is bound to be a popular event, so we recommend getting your tickets ASAP from the Red Brick Building site at www.redbrickbuilding.co.uk.

How to Protect Your Pets During Fireworks Season

THE
Fireworks season is approaching fast, and while displays provide enjoyment for many, November to New Year can be stressful for pets with a fear of fireworks – and for their owners. It’s natural for animals to be frightened of loud noises, so feeling surrounded by them and unable to escape can be very upsetting. The most important thing to do around Fireworks Night is to ensure your pet is safe! Pets trying to escape from fireworks can run into roads, injure themselves on fences, and get thoroughly lost. Keep windows and doors securely closed, keep cats in after dark, and try to walk dogs earlier in the day, well before dark. Keeping curtains closed and lights on can muffle the noise and flashes from fireworks, making them less noticeable. Having the television or radio on can also be helpful. Try to keep the atmosphere at home as relaxed as possible – your pets can often sense if you are tense. Distract them with food or their favourite toys. Frightened pets often want to hide. Cats may want to be somewhere high up. A crate covered with a blanket can be a safe space for dogs; draping a blanket over a table can also make a den. Other pets may seek out your company for reassurance. If they do, try to remain relaxed yourself, to help them stay calm. Natural pheromones or calming products can help anxious pets. There is a wide range available – our trained staff can help you choose the right product for your pet.

Radio Active
If you have checked out Feedback – With Mark & Jam (and Sometimes Dan) on local Radio, then you’re really in for a treat…
F
rom being involved in numerous musical projects in the South West, Mark & Jam are known names. Jam is an accomplished musician that attended the Academy of Contemporary Music and collaborated with Mark on every project he embarked on. Rock/Funk /Metal/Hip Hop have all been in their repertoire. Radio Shepton approached Mark to offer him his own show, and having worked in TV and Radio previously, It didn’t take much to get a workable concept together. “From being on both sides of the microphone at certain points in my career, I had a good idea of what the artists want to get out of appearing on the Radio, and how to achieve it from a production point of view.”
Music discussion and exploration They needed to get one more person to present the show to make the concept work, and the ideal candidate was Dan Pursey, a well-respected Dance DJ with Broadcast experience on a few Internet stations. Dan can’t commit to every show as he is in demand elsewhere, hence ‘Sometimes Dan’. The line-up now resembles a human Venn diagram of music that covers all genres. The show is music discussion and exploration.

Most shows will have a guest artist for the full two hours. Jam explains: “The idea is to explore the guest’s tastes, techniques and development that makes them the musician they are. It makes for a very varied show in terms of musical content; we may have a Metal band in the studio and the Bass player will pick a track by The Pet Shop Boys because that’s what was played in the car on days out as a child.” Once a month the show has the sub-title The Round Table of Comedians, where they are joined by three stand-up comics to discuss music and comedy. Dan adds: “The show has made an impact in both the comedy circuit and in the music community. We are certainly able to draw all genres in together, and from the correspondence we have from listeners, we are currently reaching across Europe and parts of the US. Keep your eyes peeled, as every show we have done so far is currently being packaged as a podcast – find us on Facebook for updates on everything!” Feedback – With Mark and Jam (and Sometimes Dan) can be heard every Friday at 9pm on Radio Shepton and GFM. Every show is also available on Mixcloud at www.mixcloud.com/FeedbackMJD. Left to Right: Jam, Alex Reading, Connor Cooke, Philomena Wilkinson, Mark and Dan.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHILDREN’S HOSPICE SOUTH WEST
Children’s Hospice South West is holding a series of open days at its home in Wraxall
C
hildren’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives through the provision of the best possible hospice care for children and young people aged 0-21, with life-limiting conditions. The care offered is wide ranging: respite and short breaks, emergency care, palliative care and end-of-life care. CHSW operates three hospices: Charlton Farm in North Somerset, Little Bridge House in North Devon, and Little Harbour in mid Cornwall. The local hospice, Charlton Farm, is a special place where children with life-limiting conditions and their families can take a short break away from home to recharge their batteries in a homely, warm and welcoming environment. Providing a much-needed break to parents from the ongoing strains of caring for their children at home, juggling professional and medical appointments as well as maintaining family life and employment. It provides a haven; a place where children and their families can be nurtured, returning home with renewed vigour and a sense of anticipation for their next visit.
for Charlton Farm, the charity has benefited from collections in the local market, and a representative of CHSW has recently given a talk about its vital work in the library. Visitors to the town’s main shopping area will be aware of its store on Queen Street, which is a treasure trove of hidden gems! The charity would warmly welcome anyone from the town who would like to see inside Charlton Farm during one of its monthly Open Days. An experienced guide will show you around, make you feel welcome and any reservations you may have had about visiting a children’s hospice will soon disappear. The next Open Days at Charlton Farm are October 14, November 11 and December 9. Please call 01275 866600 to book your place.
A home-from-home Nestled in beautiful countryside in Wraxall, Charlton Farm is an imaginative restoration of a listed farm and farm buildings, which has retained the homely feel of the farmhouse and yet provides stunning and spacious accommodation. The hospice is fully accessible and has been built and designed to be like a home-from-home. The community in Wells has shown great support to CHSW over the years. The Lions Club of Wells has raised significant funds and awareness

We don’t just do funerals, we celebrate life
W
e at Wells Funeral Services offer affordable funerals to the people of Mendip and beyond. We set up in 2016, and pride ourselves on delivering funerals that people want, as our clients’ needs, wants and budgets are very importance to us as a business. We like to get to know our families, and that’s why we have a stall at Wells Market every Wednesday from January to November. We’re there to answer any questions you have about funerals and plans, but we’ll also happily talk about anything, as it’s more getting to know you. When selecting a funeral director, try to use an independent like me, and look at their reviews – either on their site or Google. After all, you’re only as good as the last funeral you delivered. For more information, call us now on 01749 670100 or email rod@wfs.me.uk. Rod Major, Wells Funeral Services

CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE
RELEASED
OCT 25
FROM: Activision FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One
The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.
I
t’s fair to say that the Call of Duty series needed a bit of a rethink – after all, this year’s edition is the 16th Call of Duty game! Thankfully, that’s exactly what developers Infinity Ward have done. The name might be Modern Warfare, but aside from the return of Captain Price, this is an all-new battle. It’s a darker, more serious Warfare game, where you’ll now be judged by how many civilians you kill or injure. The game also focuses on realism and features tactically based moral choices. Sadly there’s no zombies mode, but the really exciting news is that this is the first CoD game to feature cross-platform support for multiplayer!
