lipping heck we’ve managed to squeeze in a load of stuff for you this month. If you don’t believe us then just go on and flick through it and you’ll see what I mean. If, on the other hand, you’re the more suspicious type, here’s the proof… We kick things off on page 5 with a run-down of all the events at the Wells Festival of Film, continue on to page 15 and there’s everything you need to know about this year’s Styles of Somerset event. On the very next page we continue our Godney Gathering coverage (including an interview with one of the stars of the Silent Disco) and then find out more about the brilliant work Star Murray is doing with the Help the Homeless Coach Café. Need more? Blimey. Okay then, what about another chance to find out more about our brilliant new website (www.thebasisonline.com) and four pages stuffed with the largest event guide around? Not bad, eh?

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO!
Film Festival to celebrate Heroes in film
F
ans of film should definitely head to the Wells Festival of Film page on the Wells Film Centre website ASAP, as there’s a stunning variety of film-related treats heading their way this April. The fun starts on Friday, April 26 with an Avengers-themed Charity Luncheon at the Swan Hotel in Wells to raise money for MediCinema. Then, after that, you can pop down to the Wells Film Centre to see the brilliant new take on the Arthurian legend, The Kid Who Would be King, or Avengers: Endgame – which will be released the day before on the 25th of April. Saturday kicks off in fine fashion with the classic Pixar movie Wall-E, followed by Pick of the Litter, a film that follows a litter of puppies in their quest to become Guide Dogs – and £1.50 of each ticket sold will be donated to Guide Dogs. The day is rounded off nicely with the James Cameron-produced film Sanctum, an incredible 3D film centering on a group of underwater cave divers, and, finally, Shongram, a romantic drama set during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The Festival has plenty happening on the Sunday too, starting with the Local Heroes Ceremony, where those who entered the Local Heroes competition to win a Go-Pro Hero camera will see their short film on the big screen! Then, in the afternoon, you’re treated to a very special 3D screening of the incredible Peter Jackson documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old. The day – and the Festival itself – is rounded off with a performance of Ex-Dominatrix: A True Story, including a Q&A with Darren Cavanagh, the film’s director! For more information and to book your tickets, head to the Festival of Film website at www. wellsfilmcentre.co.uk.

COUNCILLOR RUNNING TO SUPPORT MIND

dric Hobbs is a local businessperson and member of Shepton Mallet Town Council. He’s also one of the people involved in organising the Shepton Mallet parkrun. After the tragic death of The Prodigy’s Keith Flint on March 4, Edric found a photo of Keith at Keith’s local parkrun just two days before. He shared it on the Shepton Mallet parkrun page and it went viral in a massive way – and has a reach on Facebook now of over 700,000! Although Edric had already entered to run the Yeovil Half Marathon on March 31, he then decided to set up a JustGiving page to try and raise £500 for the Mind, the mental health charity to try and help more people in Keith’s horrific situation. “They say charity begins at home,” says Edric, “well most homes are affected by mental health issues and that’s why I’m running the Yeovil Half Marathon for Mind.” If you’re reading this before March 31st then please do go to www.justgiving.com/ fundraising./edric-hobbs to donate, or if it’s after that date and you’d like to help, speak to Edric or contact Mind directly at www.mind.org.uk.

MOST ROADS LEAD TO ROME CHARITY EVENT
G
lastonbury Musician/Producer Andy and his Devon-dwelling fellow Musician friend Tobias are undertaking an epic-distance charity cycle ride from the UK to Rome, starting from Sunday, April 14 in Canterbury. The ride is to raise money for two areas they are very passionate about: Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. The ride will take around 30 days, and all money raised is going to The Lion’s Barber Collective, Clarity & Mind. Neither Tobias nor Andy were previously sporty or keen cyclists, so this represents a fresh challenge for the pair, who have been training together since last year. They met around 10 years back, when Andy was touring with his band Fandangle and Tobias with his band The Dead Betas. You can donate via their GoFundMe link at www.gofundme.com/mrltr and also follow their progress by joining the ‘Most Roads Lead To Rome’ Facebook Group. The pair will be documenting their travels, and many ups and downs – including climbing the Alps! – by video as they head across the continent.

he Community Council for Somerset (CCS) has won funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to facilitate the first village/ parish-based Good Neighbour scheme in Somerset. The scheme is intended to partner willing volunteers and helpers with anyone needing help with small one-off tasks, such as lifts to medical appointments, dog walks, or even simply sharing a cup of tea and a friendly chat. The aim is to bring people together and help build strong relationships and connections within local communities so that they can support each other in a neighbourly way. Keeley Rudd, Chief Executive of CCS said: “CCS is excited to launch Somerset Good Neighbours. While we know many people already informally Somerset Guild ad.qxp_Layout 1 15/02/2019 18:46act Page 1

The Style Council
QUIZ
Back for its third year, the Styles of Somerset street art event promises to be the best one yet…
O
n Saturday, April 27 the SOS crew will be putting on the free street-art event for a third year, with a solid backdrop of local DJs. They will be boarding up the whole perimeter of Glastonbury skatepark and inviting the South West street-art community to come and paint their styles alongside the local sound system that’s once again provided by Bin Skankerz. On the main ‘free wall’ this year we have long-standing South-West crew Unwelcome Relatives (Boswell, Paris, Pen, DeeKay, Shab), who are planning something special. Bristol, Exeter, Taunton, Gloucester writers and muralists have all confirmed attendance. The event will run from 11am until 10pm, and on the Sunday (28th) the music will continue with a strictly vinyl set from gloworm and guests from Midday-6pm. This gives a chance for all locals and artists to see the finished art produced on the Saturday, take photos and still enjoy the Bin Skankerz sound system. The ZigZag community (with support from Glastonbury Youth Council) will again open up the area by ‘the island’ to water-based workshops, as well as a chill-out area and music. As before the team ask for no glass on both sites, and bring your own food and drink – ID may be required on alcoholic drinks. Oh, and please walk, cycle or lift share if possible. For more information, Q&As and advice for those looking to volunteer (set up, steward, pack down) at this free community event, please contact Styles of Somerset on Facebook, or pop into Rogues Gallery on Glastonbury High Street.

Heading back to the Godney Gathering this Summer is local DJ Connor C, but this time he will be closing the Silent Disco. Georgie Robbins caught up with Connor to find out what we can expect from his 2019 Godney set…
What it is like knowing you will be the top dog in the silent disco?
Are you working on any new music right now?
When I found out I was the headliner for the Silent Disco I was really gassed about it! It feels like all the hard work I have put in over the two-and-a-bit years is all coming together nicely.
I am working on recording some new mixes for the Godney Promo CD3, and some more competition entries. Just producing loads of beats. I am sat on loads of new material that I can’t wait to show everyone.
What will you being bringing us that’s different than previous years? This will be my third year performing at the Godney Gathering, and I aim to bring a whole new show this year to make it100% better! I am bringing down some guest MCs to host for me, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HARE INN!
It was on April 14 last year that Carl Binding opened the doors to his first barber shop, Hare Inn Barbers on the High Street in Street. To celebrate, he’s got a very special competition running through the month of April! Every person who has their hair cut during April will be entered into a weekly draw, where you could win a free haircut for a mate. Also, the name picked from the draw will get to choose one from Hare Inn’s range of hair products, beard balms and aftershaves for themselves! So come on down to the Hare Inn Barbers to celebrate their birthday. Carl would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support in helping to make Hare Inn such a success, and looks forward to seeing you soon.

STAR’S TREK
Rather than just complain about the lack of services for the homeless, one man decided to do something about it…
S
tar Murray is a very ambitious man. 56 years old and born and bred in Yorkshire, where he lived for the first 40 years of his life, Star was unhappy with the way his life was going. He decided it was time for a change and made himself voluntarily homeless. “I gave up all my possessions, stripped away my identity, paid off all my debts and left with just a few bits,” says Star. As a homeless person, Star was frustrated by what he saw as a lack of sustained assistance for other homeless people. Churches would be available for drinks, but only if you could afford the 50p to buy one, and homeless projects could only offer assistance on certain days. It was then that Star had the idea to set up a mobile café, offering food, drink and support for free to those who need it. There are, of course, existing outreach services, however Star plans to work alongside Mendip District Council and aims to fill in any gaps where provision might not be available. Star ended up based in the South West, and after getting himself some regular work, bought

a 1980s Bedford coach, which he then set about converting into a fully functioning café. At present, Star and the team of amazing volunteers are getting everything ready for the official launch of the Help the Homeless Coach Café service in June of this year. A hugely successful GoFundMe campaign (at www.gofundme. com/help-the-homeless-coachcafe) raised over £3,000, which is going towards helping to kit the coach out with stainless steel kitchen units, solar power and improvements to the water system. Star also received additional funding through a Bristol business where employees donate a percentage of their wages to help small community organisations. The Coach Café will only be serving vegetarian soups (which are all mostly vegan, too) along with a selection of teas and coffees. As well as food, Star will also be able to offer a range of clothing, towels, soaps, toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products. For more information, please contact Star by text on 07542 317932 or follow Help the Homeless Coach Café on Facebook.

THE
With the Easter Bunny visiting us soon, sales of pet rabbits are expected to soar over the Easter period across the country. However, the commitment of taking on these fluffy friends is generally underestimated by new owners. Rabbits are far from being easy children’s pets and have a lot of specific needs: it costs on average £1,500 and a minimum 40 hours a month to care for a bunny properly, and they live for 8-10 years. Their diet, handling and housing are all unique considerations. Also, did you know that rabbits should always ideally live in companion pairs? So that’s two bunnies to think of! Sadly, it is estimated that 35,000 rabbits a year are given to rescue centres in the UK, the majority within three months of being acquired. If you’re thinking of getting a pet rabbit, give us a call to discuss it with one of our vets. Here at Orchard we are committed to providing up-todate advice on how best to care for your bunnies, with specific vets and nurses that have a special interest in rabbits. We are a member practice of the Rabbit Welfare and Association Fund and have our own dedicated Rabbit Health Plan. If your bunny hasn’t had a comprehensive health check with a vet recently, then treat them this Easter with a visit to us. We’re sure the Easter Bunny will treat you kindly in return!

LET ME TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF PURCHASING YOUR NEXT CAR

o, it was over a year ago now that I set up my own business after 32 years within main dealer showrooms. My first year of Rob Jones Cars has been pretty exciting, helping many customers and readers of The Basis magazine into new cars. I keep between 8-10 cars in stock at any time, which can be seen on my website at www.robjonescars.co.uk but I have also been able to source cars closely matching customer requirements – recent acquisitions include a BMX X3 and a new-shape Astra. To celebrate my first year and also the Easter break, I’m once again holding a competition on my Facebook page @robjonescars to give away some
delicious Easter Eggs! Why not join my page so that you will be ready for the competition? I’m excited to see what year two will bring, and to help more people into new cars! Please get in touch if you are looking to buy or even sell your car – I can also help do this. Rob Jones

Recruiting Support Workers £8.27 per hour
Affinity Trust are a national charity dedicated to providing high quality, personalised support to adults with learning disabilities. We support over 1,000 people with learning disabilities across England and Scotland, enabling them to live as independently as possible. We recently began supporting people across Somerset, and have a number of Support Worker opportunities for full-time, parttime and bank positions within our supported living teams in the following areas: Street, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Wells, and Baltonsborough. Whether enabling people to live in their own homes, giving opportunities to enjoy community-based activities, or supporting people into work, Affinity Trust aims to ensure that those we support can live life to the full. With flexible hours available, full training provided, paid-for DBS, and access to a range of excellent benefits, including 28 days paid holiday per year (Inc. bank holidays, and increasing to 33 days with length of service), Competitive pension scheme (we will match contributions up to 6%), Employee Assistance programme (24-hour helpline), and Savings of around £500 per year when using our discount and cashback scheme, ‘Affinity4you’.

DAYS GONE
RELEASED
The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

C
reated by Sony’s Bend Studio (better known for the Syphon Filter series), Days Gone appears to be another post-apocalyptic game in the mould of The Last of Us, but that would be to do it a disservice, as it has enough style and class to be its own game. You play Deacon St. John, a drifter caught up in a world where a global pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, turning them into ravenous infected (definitely not zombies!) that are quick and fight in packs. This is another PS4 exclusive that proves when it comes to First-Party titles, Sony still has the edge over the opposition.
