A Night’s Tale
Fun and fundraising for the Mind in Somerset charity at St Benedict’s Church in Glastonbury
A
valon Phoenix Players’ production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at St Benedict’s Church, Glastonbury promises to be a lot of fun, and also features live musical accompaniment by an ensemble which includes members of the MSO (Mid-Somerset Orchestra). “It’s possibly the best antidote to Brexit,” suggests the play’s director, Richard. And so, on March 29, why not come out and enjoy a wonderful evening of comedy, romantic drama, music and song, while at the same time supporting an essential local charity – Mind in Somerset! Twelfth Night is easily one of Shakespeare’s funniest and most accessible plays. This glorious romantic comedy, where confusion over identity and gender combine with the mischievous jokes and drunken revels of an anarchic Sir Toby and his friends, create many hilarious moments. “If the performances are half as much fun as the rehearsals you will be in for a treat.” says Richard. “We are a new local drama group with an age range from teens to mid-sixties, and with talented novices playing alongside seasoned professionals. If you are interested in joining us we still have some smaller walk-on parts available.” The Avalon Phoenix Players would like to thank all the clubs and businesses that have supported them, included Themes, a prop hire business from Glastonbury, and Evercreech’s Drama Group. It’s guaranteed to be a lot of fun, and all for the bargain price of just £8. Tickets will be available at the door at St Benedict’s Church (unless the event sales out) and also online at www. avalonphoenixplayers.weebly.com.

YOUTH THEATRE GROUP TAKE ON A CLASSIC MUSICAL
M
ark Youth Theatre put on a large-scale production each year, and are returning to Strode Theatre again this March with their production of Singin’ in the Rain Jr. Comprising a talented set of 8 to 18 years olds, the Mark Youth Theatre Group is based in the nearby village of Mark. Working through the medium of drama, the team aim to help children gain confidence and learn to express themselves. Singin’ in the Rain Jr has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in ‘talking pictures’ without
the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her… Hilarious situations, snappy dialogue and a hitparade score of Hollywood standards make this the “Greatest Movie Musical of All Time”. Singin’ in the Rain Jr will run from March 28-30 at the Strode Theatre. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Theatre box office or online at www.strodetheatre.org.uk.

THE BOTTOM LINE
QUIZ
interview
Heading to Godney Gathering this Summer are super-cool pop punk outfit The Bottom Line. With some new music on the horizon – which promises to be their best yet – and a hectic festival season ahead of them, there really is no better time to be a fan. But what we really want to know is, who is the biggest liability of the band and whether they are truly prepared for the sheer volume of cider available at The Godney Gathering? We sent Georgie Robbins out to find out the answers…
It seems like you have a busy year ahead of you. What are you most looking forward to?
we finish our set making sure everyone has had a good time then that’s all that matters!
This year and last has been a tough one for us. We’ve had so much going on behind the scenes, but not being allowed to talk about it has made everything frustrating. But we’re now coming into our new album, which is soon to be announced and we can’t wait to get this music out. It’s been a long time coming and we have never been more proud of the music we have made in the last two years. We’re really looking forward to showing our fans!
You will be heading to Godney Gathering in July. Are you prepared for the cider intake? We cant wait! This is our first ever show in the Glastonbury area so we’re very excited to see what it’s all about. Cider is a given for us at any UK Festival so we want to say that we’re absolutely ready, but maybe we’ll be kicking ourselves for saying that at the end of the festival!
What would you say in your time as a band has been a particular highlight? In 2017 we did a 71-date world tour across China, UK, Europe, America and Canada, and that was one of the most insane and ridiculous things we’ve ever done as a band. I still can’t believe while typing this that we actually did it. Part of that tour was alongside The Offspring In Europe – we played an ice hockey arena in Prague to 7,000 people. It was absolutely incredible and one of the biggest shows we’ve ever played in our career so far.
So we hear you’ve just signed an important deal? Tell us about it.
So we’ve just said goodbye to being independent and signed a record deal with Marshall Records. It’s a really big step for us as a band and a step we are really excited about. For us it’s all about getting our music out there for people to enjoy, and we feel that Marshall are the right people to do it. And How will you leave a lasting impression also being invited into the Marshall family is a huge honour for us, as they are a company that we have on us Somerset folk? all grown up with and respected. We always put 110% into our live shows, always We can’t wait to show you what we have been have and always will. We really try our best to cater working and wemusical are so spirits excited to get to Sum work41 combined of Blink 182, for as wide an audience as possible, and plan to Channelling theon, and Green Day, and with some cracking tunes too, The Bottom with Marshall, too. do so for Godney Gathering this year. As long as Line will have you leaping about like your shoes are on fire.

On April 1, Niall Taylor and his wife, Alison, will retire from the partnership, although they will continue part-time. Niall qualified in 1982, started in mixed practice, settling in Glastonbury with Alison in 1992. Niall writes: “At Orchard Vets I was responsible for expanding the pet side of what was then a mainly farm practice. I helped design and construct new premises, and the practice moved from our location in Glastonbury to spacious luxury in Wirrall Park Road in November 1997! “My time in practice certainly had its extremes. From the tragedy of loved pets succumbing to disease or a farmer with a herd wiped out by TB, to the joy of bringing new life into the world and occasionally saving lives. It is an honour to have been part of the profession – a vocation, not just a job. I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest, professional people I have known as they care for the animals in their charge. “I had to stop doing out-of-hours work 10 years ago but my colleagues continue to provide a full 24-hour service, from our own premises to all our clients. This is something fewer practices do now, many opting to shut in the evenings and expecting owners of poorly animals to transport them to a central provider a considerable distance away. “I am proud to leave Orchard vets in capable hands, working to high clinical standards, advocating for animals and helping owners navigate difficult choices. CREATE:SPACE RETURNS TO STREET FOR A VERY SPECIAL EXHIBITION
A
staging post is the gathering of people and resources ready for a great expedition. It’s the base camp from which pioneers and explorers set out into the unknown, creating new trails and pathways for those who come after… This March we will begin gathering the CREATE:SPACE II community in our Spring exhibition at the Old Tesco Unit in the Crispin Centre, ready to set out on the amazing new adventure that is Street Art Trail on May 4. Our ‘Staging Post’ will run from March 25 to May 4, at which point we will break out into the new spaces and creative opportunities that will come as we launch the first ever Street Art Trail, creating innovative, collaborative pathways, and leaving our footprints for others to follow.
The Street Art Trail
Street Art Trail is a collaborative arts event bringing together artists, makers, performers, and organisations from Street to celebrate the shared heritage, environment, and creativity of our community. We’ll have much more on this very exciting event in an upcoming issue, but we can already tell you that it’s definitely going to be one of the highlights of the Street calendar! If you would like to perform as part of Street Art Trail 2019, or have a suggestion for an event, then please get in touch via dylan@ fourwalkinginthefire.com. #ARTTRAILINSTREET

DARK SOULS TRILOGY FROM: Bandai Namco FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One, PC
RELEASED
The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

I
t’s hard to completely recommend a trilogy of games that are so damned hard that you may smash your way through a number of joypads in frustration to get to the end, but recommend this trilogy we do, as it also contains some of the finest gaming moments of the last 10 years. You’re getting a lot for your money too, as the trilogy contains not only the three games, but also all the associated DLC (and there’s quite a lot of that!). Dark Souls may well be one of the most difficult game series ever made, but it’s also smart enough to reward those with the dedication and stamina to get through them.
