Welcome

On Sunday October 8, your welcome to the city of Wells and to the 2017 Wells Food Festival will be as warm as ever. The Management Team, all volunteers, have put together what they believe is their best Festival ever: more than 150 market stall spaces, sold out months in advance, new talks and book signings by famous authors, foraging and fermentation demos and, for the first time, a special ‘foodie’ tour of the Cathedral. Once again, entry is free. There is so much for everyone to learn, and children have their own special ‘foodie’ play zone.

OUR HISTORY Wells Food Festival, a celebration of Somerset’s rich culinary heritage, is back for the fifth year running. From just 45 stalls and 3,000 visitors in 2012, last year numbers had swelled to 150 exhibitors and as many as 15,000 visitors – with 94% in an exit poll saying they will be back this year. Throughout this period of wonderful growth, the same core Management Team of local people, now joined by other volunteers, has overseen the entire event. Possibly the prettiest food festival in England, the Festival begins in the Market Place, the medieval heart of the city, with the iconic backdrop of Wells Cathedral. From there, market stalls meander along the Bishop’s Palace Moat into the Recreation Ground, ending in the 15th century Bishop’s Barn.

OUR PURPOSE From the very beginning, our main goal has been to celebrate and showcase Somerset’s rich and amazingly varied artisan food and drink producers. By encouraging visitors to sample delicious products made from the best of ingredients, and to learn about the landscape during a great day out, the Festival is proud to give a significant boost to the city’s prestige, its tourism, and the local economy.

Tasty Talks There are three ticketed talks taking place in the Wells Cathedral Education Room. These are; Christopher Somerville, Walking Correspondent of The Times, will follow his tastebuds around the Mendip Hills and adjacent lands with Ales, Trails and Snails. Kate Lynch, an artist and social historian, has spent nearly 20 years documenting traditional farming and crafts in Somerset. Her latest book FARM – Paintings, drawings and Somerset voices features small farmers mainly on the Somerset Levels. A cider-tasting tour of the UK with local expert, Bob Chaplin, comparing ciders from different parts of the country. Each talk includes a unique 30-minute, themed ‘Taster Tour’ of Wells Cathedral. One of the Cathedral’s knowledgeable guides will bring to life stories and customs over centuries of history reflected in representations of food and drink in the medieval stone carvings and stained glass. It will include a private tasting session in the Vicars’ Hall, the original dining hall for the men of the Cathedral Choir, almost unchanged since the mid-14th century and not normally open to the public.

Tickets for all the talks are just £6 and available in advance from www.bradsons.co.uk

CHARLIE BIGHAM’S DISCOVERY ZONE This new attraction is adjacent to the Bishop’s Barn. It’ll be packed to the rafters with interactive stands from innovative exhibitors such as Tracebridge Fermenteria, who are based in Wellington, demonstrating the art of fermentation. Waitrose will be holding cheese and exotic fruits tastings, alongside a fish identification stand and a butchery section.

Morrisons Children’s Zone There’s plenty to interest younger visitors to the Wells Food Festival too, with their own section of the festival housed in the Bishop’s Barn and expertly run by Noah’s Ark PreSchool from Wells. This theme for this year’s section is ‘Have Fun with Food’, and all the senses will be used to ignite children’s imagination, from planting seeds through to composting.

Artisan Market & Street Food The Artisan Market is at the heart of the festival, stretching from the Market Place, along the picturesque Bishop’s Moat and into the Recreation Ground. Over 150 stalls will be showcasing the region’s finest produce, and visitors are always struck by the diversity of food and drink produced in the region. In addition to some of the world’s most celebrated cheese and cider, expect to find everything from sushi and bratwurst to charcuterie and chocolate.

TOWN HALL The Town Hall will host stalls from local artisan craftsmen. You’ll find handmade earthen ware pottery by Chris Wright, beautiful hand-poured candles from Echo Candles, who are based deep in Somerset, and great tasting, unusual tea from the Leafy Tea Company. Be sure to visit the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen and Heritage Courtyard Studios, too.

wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

William Sitwell William Sitwell is one of Britain’s foremost food writers, and a familiar face on TV shows such as BBC’s Masterchef. He will be giving a talk in the Bishop’s Palace Undercroft at Midday on the subject of his book, Eggs or Anarchy. It reveals the heroic tale of how Lord Woolton, Minister for Food, really fed the people of Britain during the trying times of the Second World War. William’s talk will include a tasting of Woolton Pie, recreated for the occasion by The Unusual Pork Pie Company based in Shepton Mallet.
