The Moat Boat Races bring people together in an atmosphere of competitive fun
6 I moat boat races
Welcome to the Annual Moat Boat Races 2018. This year’s Races are the 17th we’ve held and once again bring people together in an atmosphere of competitive fun. It wouldn’t take place without the countless hours of planning and discussion that have taken place between members of the Air Cadets, the Lions, the Council, local business sponsors and the many volunteers who are determined to make the day a joyous one for all the family, young and old. The Lions were founded 101 years ago, and this year we have elected Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir, from Iceland. Gudrun is our first female International President of the Lions, recognising the contribution everyone can make to their community whatever their sex, race or religion.
In the Lions we have a purpose, which is to empower individuals to serve their local communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs. Apart from the money you drop in the yellow buckets at the Races, who do you know who is searching for an opportunity to make a difference? Perhaps someone you know wants to widen their circle of friends. Or someone who wants to give back and make a difference locally, as part of an organisation with an international reach spanning over 100 years. Together we can do amazing things. Talk to the team on the Lions stand or contact me direct on cityofwellslions @gmail.com.

A message from Cllr. celia wride The 645th Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells
Wells has shown it can keep faith with traditions while fully embracing modern ideas
8 I moat boat races
Firstly, I should probably introduce myself. My daughter, Sarah, and I are honoured – and still a bit startled – to find ourselves the Mayor and Mayoress of this wonderful city. I would like to warmly welcome you all to the annual Moat Boat Races. I know that Wells is a City steeped in history and traditions dating back centuries, and is fast becoming a popular festival venue – food, comedy, literature and now theatre – but Wells has also shown that it can keep faith with traditions, while fully embracing modern ideas. I don’t think Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury ever envisaged that The Bishop’s Palace’s Moat would be used in this way. The moat was created more to keep the then community out, but I would like to think that
he would have absolutely supported the charitable aims of this Wells Lions and Wells Air Cadets ‘Jewel in the Crown’. I am sure that the Council elders, in days of yore would have been relieved to see their community, if allowed by the then Bishop, enjoying themselves and focusing on fun, and distracted from rather contentious civic issues. I have learned that until fairly recent times, a team of councillors would enter the event. I am heaving a sigh of relief that thankfully this tradition has fallen away! So in closing, may Sarah and I wish all competitors good fortune on the high seas. Keep the wind in your sails and endeavour to keep all hands on deck! Bon Voyage!

Cathedrals exist to connect, and we are delighted to do so
I am honoured to be asked to write this piece for the Wells Lions. And I do so to celebrate the links between the Cathedral, the City of Wells, and the local area. Cathedrals exist for community, and they connect with so many communities – large numbers come here for regular worship, and civic occasions also draw significant numbers at Christmas, Easter, Harvest and
10 I moat boat races
Remembrance. People come here from right across the local community; the Cathedral School and other schools too have very close links. Visitors to the Cathedral from across the UK and the wider world support local businesses, and as Dean I am delighted to be involved with Wells and Somerset life. Cathedrals exist to connect, and we are delighted to do so.

Each year the rafts get more exotic and also much faster
12 I moat boat races
A very warm welcome to you all to the City of Wells Moat Boat Races. I believe this is the 17th year of this wonderful and very enjoyable event. Each year it seems the rafts get more and more exotic, and also much faster. I know that last year, despite putting in our top team and paddling as hard as we could, the Bishops’ team struggled to keep the competition in sight. It is however an enjoyable event for competitors and spectators alike, and is certainly one of the high spots of the year. I wish all those taking part this year a successful day. Let’s hope the weather is shining brightly on us again this year. It is my pleasure to nominate the Wells Connect Centre as a local charity to benefit from money raised at this event. Their
Community Outreach team works with other organisations across the Mendips to support people challenged by complex and multiple needs, such as homelessness, unemployment, addiction, mental health or other difficulties. They have a skilled and dedicated team who provide short and long-term care which makes a real difference to people’s lives. It is good that some of the proceeds of this day will go to help people who need support in this way. Please do give generously and support all the stalls and charities that are here. Particular thanks go to those who have helped to organise today, especially the City of Wells Lions and the Wells Air Cadets. I know how much hard work goes into this event and we are very grateful to them.

Stallholders
Check out our stallholders The Wells Lions would like to thank all the stallholders for helping to make the Moat Boat Races day so special. There are over 40 stalls around the Bishop’s Eye plus lots more in the park – there’s a wide variety to choose from, too. And keep an eye out for the charity stalls we have dotted throughout the area as well. From commercial stalls selling a wide
range of artisan crafts to a fine choice of food stalls and plenty of rides and slides to keep the kids entertained, there’s something here for everyone. And don’t forget that Tincknell are here with go-karts to race on. If you head into the park then there’s music in the bandstand throughout the day, and you can enjoy a beer or cider from our local micropub, Just Ales.
thank you The Wells Moat Boat Races committee thanks all our sponsors, organisations and individuals whose help and support has made today possible. With all our costs covered through such generous sponsorship, every penny you donate today will find its way to a worthy cause. We’d especially like to thank our principal sponsor The Swan Hotel, and our other main sponsors Butcombe Brewery, Tincknell Country Stores and Bluebird Care. Thank you to St. John Ambulance for providing first aid cover today, and to Tony and Sylvia Robbins of The Venue, South Street, Wells, for hosting all our committee meetings.

A message from Wells air cadets Flight Lieutenant John Blackburn, Officer Commanding – 1955 (City of Wells) Air Cadets
This year marks 100 years since the RAF came into being
20 I moat boat races
A very warm welcome to the 2018 Moat Boat Races on what has been a milestone year for the Royal Air Force. As I’m sure you will have seen in the media, this year marks 100 years since the RAF came into being – on the 1st April, 1918 – yes, April Fool’s Day! It has been a year of events and celebration across the country, and of course our cadets were in the thick of it where possible. Our Cadets and staff took part in the Centenary parade through Windsor earlier in the year, and we had a local service and a ‘raising of the colours’ too. This year, Wells Cadets have been able to fly – something we have missed the last couple of years. Hopefully more flying will be available from now on. We were very honoured to be chosen by
last year’s Mayor of Wells, Cllr John North, to be one of his supported charities during his term in office, and so we are now using our newly refurbished flight simulator at the Squadron – to hone those skills the Cadets need when they go flying for real. We have also seen staff changes at the squadron. Squadron Leader Les Tanner has stepped down as the Wells Commanding Officer to support Air Cadet activities closer to his home. I’m holding the reins in Wells for now. You may well recognise me as I was the CO in Wells before Les took command. So the writing of this piece fell to me as one of my first official tasks. I hope you all have a great day. I am sorry that there is no fly-past this year. We did try, but as you can imagine, the RAF are very busy this year!

CITY OF WELLS
HEAR YE!
Well’s Town Crier, Len Sweales, is in a poetic mood, and put pen to paper to give us this ode to the Moat Boat Races… It’s great to be in Wells on this Bank Holiday Monday, where it promises to be a sun-filled fun day. Every year The Bishop’s Palace raft races take place on the Moat, where local organisations try to float a boat. All in costume and trained to win, but everyone knows they always fall in. It’s the Wells Lions and the Air Cadets that put on this magnificent event, with charity fundraising their sole intent. The Football and Tennis didn’t go our way, but everyone will be a winner today. So if you see a collecting tin, take some time and put a donation in. Every penny goes to a worthwhile cause, so donate freely without a pause. I will be out giving them all a cheer, I am too old to participate again this year. So enjoy yourselves in Wells, have a great day out. Support the Lions as it’s what charity’s about.

Various work and improvements were carried out over the centuries, culminating on November 27, 1998 when the Town Hall was granted a Licence to conduct Civil Marriages. In addition to being equipped for conducting Marriage Ceremonies, the Town Hall has a Public Entertainment Licence, a self-contained bar area and a modern, well-equipped kitchen that can cater for up to 180 people. The Hall is also available to hire for receptions,
dances, concerts, fairs and meetings. Fans of Poldark will have surely spotted the Town Hall in the TV show, as it doubled for the Warleggan Bank in Truro. The production company spent two days constructing new pillars and walls, and generally changed the front of the building to make it the perfect representation of an 18th century bank. SAM EVANS Sam is another act that you’ve almost certainly seen around before. He’s been gigging hard over the past five years in the UK and Europe, popped up at a lot of festivals (including one he actually organised, the Free Harmony Festival) and has released six CDs of wonderful music.

SOUPER DUPER Everyone's a winner at Wells SOUP! – an initiative from Wells Independents It is a powerful tool to start conversations, enjoy yourself and improve where you live. So far 39 local good causes have benefited from Wells SOUP! It is our city’s quarterly micro-granting lunch which launched with great success in Seager Hall on Union Street in 2016. It raises £700 each time for local charities and good causes that benefit the city and people of Wells, as well as providing an opportunity to make new contacts. Now SOUP! has outgrown Seager Hall and moved to the bigger Connect Centre at the junction of Chamberlain Street and Portway.

These Blue School girls helped the school’s catering manager Lisa Western make the choice of soups for April 14th’s event
The next one will be there on Saturday, October 27th between 1-2pm – it’s best to be there by 1.45pm to get a good seat.
How SOUP! works £5 gets you delicious soup, fresh bread and a vote. Drinks are available. At each SOUP! lunch there are four four-minute presentations by local Wells projects then the audience votes. Whichever good cause gets the most votes wins half of the money collected at the door, match-funded by sponsorship, for their project. The runnersup share the other half. So all four come away with new funds. Winners come back to a future SOUP! to share what their project has achieved. You can apply to present at Wells SOUP! through the website wellsindependents.org. Go to the Community Projects section and
look under SOUP! Email SOUP@ wellsindependents.org if you have any queries. Wells SOUP is organised four times a year by Wells Independents, a non-party political group who work as volunteers to make a difference in the city. The group’s other projects include: Providing volunteer meet and greeters at Wells coach park as part of the Visit by Coach initiative. This encourages visitors to spend more time and money in Wells shops and restaurants, and encourages the coach drivers to stay longer in Wells rather than rush off to Clarks Village. Providing volunteer drivers to bring elderly or vulnerable people, including those living with memory loss and health issues, to and from the Lawrence Centre charity in Wells which provides daytime activities.

SOUNDS FAMILIAR? Forget The Traveling Wilburys, it's time to meet The Unravelling Wilburys!
Chances are that you’ve already heard of The Traveling Wilburys, probably the greatest supergroup ever assembled, featuring Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The band released two albums and then decided to call it a day after Roy Orbison passed away in 1988. Which leads us neatly to the present day and a band of local
36 I moat boat races
musicians who claim that their music was actually stolen by the Traveling Wilburys! Disheartened by this, the band went on to tour for over 20 years as Sgt Pepper’s Only Dart Board Band. After a lengthy legal battle, a judge ruled that the band could get their true identity back and play their old songs. Not only those ones though, but a choice selection of classics from some of the biggest stars in music – including Pretty Woman, Mr Blue Sky, Mr Tambourine Man and Here Comes the Sun. This band are The Unravelling Wilburys, and although their tales may be on the tall side, their musical ability is unquestionable.
This isn’t the first time that The Unravelling Wilburys have played in Wells, as they did another concert at St Thomas Church in Wells back in December of last year. That one was a complete sell out, so if you don’t want to miss out on one of the musical events of the year, we recommend you get your tickets as soon as possible. The second concert by The Unravelling Wilburys will once again be held at St Thomas Church on 30th November, and tickets cost £12 in advance (£15 on the door) and can be purchased from www.cityof wellslions.org/wilburys.
