The first, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, will be released on the 16th of December 2016, and now Lucasfilm have released details on the second one – and as we’d hoped, it’s an origins film for Han Solo. The film will be co-directed by the duo behind The Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of

2018 “This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever.” There’s no news on who will be playing Solo in the film, but our money’s on Anthony Ingruber – who played a younger version of Harrison Ford’s character in the recent The Age of Adaline. Ingruber also does a spookily accurate impression of Ford, which you can find on YouTube.
After the success of Disney’s Maleficent, they’re looking at some of their other films for live-action origins stories, and the one that apparently is going to be next is the genie from Aladdin.
Considering that it made over $300 million, it’s probably not that surprising that a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph is in the development stages. No news on the plot, but we’ve heard that Disney have approached Nintendo to include Mario.

On Eddie Plant’s childhood “Eddie was the other guys’ childhood nemesis. He really has quite a large ego, in terms of his championships, and he loves to remind everyone else how good he is. That’s the way he’s portrayed as a child – and when we jump to the present day, his attitude hasn’t changed all that much.” Creating a distinctive look for Eddie “He’s definitely mentally and visually stuck in a certain time. You go to the arcade, hang out with your friends, check out the girls – or the one girl who might have been there that day. They played music. It was like being at the rollerskating rink, and it was so much more fun.”

We also know that the story focuses on Wiig and McCarthy, who’ve written a book claiming that ghosts are real. Mocked by practically the whole world, everyone’s forced to eat their words when the spooks are unleashed on Manhattan. Finally, we’ve heard that one of the original Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd, has been on set to film a cameo role. Ghostbusters will be released on 22nd July next year.

GAME OVER?
With the rise in popularity of video games in the 1980s, it was only a matter of time before the movie world took notice. Unfortunately though, a lot of the films made from video games haven’t done the source material justice. But all that is about to change‌ 18

ideo games have been around now for nearly 40 years, and it’s fair to say that the technological leap from the first blocky basic games to the visual treats we have now has been enormous. Although classic games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders still have gameplay that makes it hard to put the controller down and walk away, games have become more and more cinematic. Where once it was possible for a single person to create a game in a bedroom, now a game’s development is similar to a film’s – armies of people slaving away to a deadline, and often with a seven or eight-figure budget. Recent games like The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Uncharted now rely on a sharp and unfolding narrative just as much as their visual flair, with graphics that are verging on the photo-realistic. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take Hollywood long to realise that they had a captive audience by translating the hugely popular characters from the gaming world into movies. Unfortunately for us

With an all-star cast and a strong game behind it, Prince of Persia went on to becoming the highest-grossing film based on a video game. though, these films tended to be rather poor. And, sadly, the quality of the films that followed didn’t do much to improve on that, despite roping in some big names. The following year saw the release of a film based on the beat-’em-up Street Fighter (which, despite earning nearly $100 million, is widely regarded as being dreadful) but the following year Mortal Kombat (again based on a fighting game) improved matters somewhat. Over the years there have been films released on everything from Tomb Raider (starring Angelina Jolie) to Resident Evil to last year’s Need for Speed, but despite the odd gem here and there, the quality has generally been rather low.
20
widescreen
August 2015
So why is that? Kirk Kjeldsen, a professor in the Cinema Department at the VCU School of the Arts, believes it’s all down to the narrative. In a recent interview he said: “Translating a non-linear narrative into a linear three-act structure is like making a song out of a painting or a sculpture,” says Kjeldsen. “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is probably the best way to go with a video game adaptation – take the best parts of the game, discard the rest.”
A bright future While the first story-led video games were often written by anyone at the development studio capable of stringing a sentence together, more recent games have become a lot more sophisticated, and the writing and dialogue has improved dramatically. Modern video games are hugely influenced by the movie world – The Last of Us, a recent release on the PlayStation console, has echoes of post-apocalyptic films such as I Am Legend, for example – and now deal with serious and emotional issues. George Lucas is a big fan of video games. He says: “The big game of the next five years will be one in which you empathise strongly with the characters through a love story. That will be the Titanic of the games industry, because you have actual relationships on-screen instead of people being shot.” It’s clear that as games develop then so will the films that are spawned from them. One of the most popular video games of all time, Warcraft, is a multi-player online experience where gamers interact with each other to undertake missions. With such a rich, open world that’s steeped in history and backstory, it’s the perfect game for a film translation. And next year, on June 3 to be exact, we’ll find out if we’re right, as director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) brings his movie version of the game to the big screen.
TRAILER
NEED FOR SPEED (2014) Starring Toby Kebbell and Dominic Cooper, Warcraft should go some way to readdressing the balance and making video games a viable source for movies in the future. “The source of your material is not necessarily going to dictate whether you can make a good movie,” said Duncan Jones in a recent interview. “It’s finding an element of truth in it, or a thread which you can build a story around. Fortunately, Warcraft has 20 years of storytelling to pick from. And for us, the obvious choice was to go right to the beginning of that story when Orcs first met Humans. That was kind of our initial set up, and then a lot of things fall into place from that.” Clearly Jones is a director who’s paid attention to the films that have come before and is very keen to not repeat the mistakes of the past. So, to conclude, we believe that after a whole bunch of average films, the video game-based movies we’ll see over the next couple of years will be a massive improvement over what we’ve had so far. Pixels began life as a short film by French animator, Patrick Jean (and can be found on YouTube), but clearly that was enough to entice Harry Potter director, Chris Columbus. “Reading the Pixels script felt so unique that I just had to do it,” he says. “I loved the blend of comedy mixed with action, which gave me an opportunity to do something I hadn’t been able to do since Harry Potter.”
1 NASA launches a time capsule into space, with examples of modern Earth culture – including video games. 2 But it’s seen as an act of war, so the world’s best games players are assembled. 3 Mimicking the oldfashioned games, the aliens begin their attack… 4 …including a fight with Donkey Kong himself!
Humanity’s last hope All is not lost though, as the President (Kevin James, obviously) then ropes in his old arcade gameloving school mates to once again use their skills to attempt to defeat the alien invasion. Leading the pack is Brenner (Adam Sandler), Ludlow (Josh Gad) and Eddie (an alwaysbrilliant Peter Dinklage). After decades of finely tuned gaming skills, the President believes that they have the knowledge and experience to beat the aliens. Will they succeed where the armed forces failed? The only way to find out is check out Pixels when it comes to the Wells Film Centre on the 12th of August!

ith the IMF now disbanded and Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, a new threat – called the Syndicate – soon emerges. The Syndicate is a network of highly skilled assassins and rogue operatives who are dedicated to establishing a new world order via an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Faced with what may be the most impossible mission yet, Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a disavowed British agent who may or may not be a member of this deadly rogue nation.

Luckily for Hunt, the whole gang are back, including William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and the brilliantly named Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames). Also, in a superb piece of casting, British actor Sean Harries is the main antagonist, Solomon Lane. After a shaky start with the first Mission: Impossible film, it's been non-stop action ever since. And Tom Cruise once again demands that he perform the majority of his stunts. In Rogue Nation there are two sequences that prove that when it comes to going the extra mile, Cruise is still the man for the job.
FILMFACTS Famously, Tom Cruise likes to do the majority of his own stunts on all the films he works on. For Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Cruise was strapped to the side of a flying airplane 5,000 feet in the air and also had to learn how to breath underwater for over six minutes!

ixar’s Inside Out is a totally original tale that takes us inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old girl that’s struggling with her emotions – as well as dealing with the fact that her father’s job has relocated the family to the other side of America. In Inside Out you get a first-hand view of what’s going on inside Riley’s head when you meet the five Emotions that control her emotional state – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. To complicate matters further, Sadness loses Riley’s happy memories, leading to her and Joy heading off to find them – and leaving Anger, Fear and Disgust in charge of Riley’s emotions! The best Pixar films mix originality, humour and emotional elements to perfection and Inside Out may well do that better than any of the Pixar films that have come before it. A future classic.
FILMFACTS If you look closely at the images in Riley’s memories you’ll spot scenes from other Pixar films – including Carl and Ellie from Up. Writer/director Pete Docter claims that the dining scene came from his own family experience.

n Hot Pursuit, Reese Witherspoon plays the role of Rose Cooper, an uptight cop who’s forced into protecting Daniella Cortez (Sofia Vergara), after Cortez’s husband agrees to testify against a powerful drug lord. Things don’t go according to plan though, and within the blink of an eye, people are murdered, things explode and the pair are fugitives on the run – literally handcuffed to each other. With the drug gangs and enough corrupt cops to fill a New York station house hot on their trail, Cooper and Cortez are forced to work together to survive and, hopefully, clear their names. After more serious roles recently, it’s worth remembering that Reese Witherspoon is a fine comedy actress, and here she gets to prove it. Sofia Vergara also gets to flex her comedy acting chops here, too. And together? Well, they’re the perfect comedy match.
FILMFACTS Hot Pursuit was released 28 years to the day after the 1987 film of the same name – both films are very different, though. During a scene, Sofia Vergara was accidentally a bit rough with Reese Witherspoon and Reese ended up in hospital! August 2015

he Fantastic Four comic first appeared over 50 years ago back in 1961, and so far there have been three other Fantastic Four films released. Unfortunately though, the four's journey to celluloid has not been a happy one. The good news is all that is about to change with this action-packed and dramatic reboot. You see, this one's based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic series that relaunched the superheroes in 2004 – and which was co-written by Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service writer, Mark Millar. With a tweaked storyline, darker tone and

sharper script, it brought the four mutated heroes slap bang up-todate and reinvigorated the series. Taking on the roles of the Fantastic Four are Miles Teller (Mr. Fantastic), Kate Mara (The Invisible Woman), Michael B. Jordan (The Human Torch) and Jamie Bell (The Thing). Finally, playing the role of archenemy Doctor Doom is the excellent Toby Kebbell. Setting the tone for the film is director Josh Trank, who's used to working on teenage superhero movies, as one of his previous films was the superb Chronicle.
FILMFACTS The filmmakers cite Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, David Cronenberg’s The Fly and Scanners, and Josh Trank’s Chronicle as influences. It’s rumoured that Fantastic Four exists at the same time as the X-Men, so we could be looking at a future collaboration.

R
obert Carlyle's directorial debut recently opened the Edinburgh Film Festival to unanimous praise. Part Ealing Comedy and part Coen brothers, The Legend of Barney Thomson proves without a shadow of a doubt that there's much more to Carlyle that a psychopath in a Irvine Welsh story. Carlyle also stars as the hero, Thomson himself. A socially awkward barber from Glasgow, Thomson falls foul of the law when he accidentally bumps off his boss, but it’s the trail of chaos that escalates from that point onwards that makes the film a dark, twisted joy to watch.
As the killings increase and the net closes in on Thomson, it falls to the foul-mouthed Holdall (Ray Winstone) to link the hapless barber to the murders. In a surprising yet perfectly played piece of casting, it's Emma Thompson who steals the show, though. Despite only being a couple of years older that Carlyle, Thompson is almost unrecognisable as Barney's 77-year-old mother. With little fan-fair behind its release, it would be easy to miss out on The Legend of Barney Thomson, but to miss it would be a crime, as it's one of the better films you'll see this year. August 2015
FILMFACTS Although she plays his mother in the film, Emma Thompson is only two years older that Robert Carlyle – Thompson was born in 1959 and Carlyle in 1961. Robert Carlyle is best known for his role as Begbie in the brilliant Trainspotting from 1996.

rish director Tomm Moore follows up 2009’s The Secret of Kells (which is a firm favourite in the Widescreen office) with this Oscar-nominated beauty. Song of the Sea is another Celticinfluenced tale as it’s based on the ancient myth of the Selkie, a creature that lives in the sea as a seal but then transforms into human shape when it steps onto land. The film concentrates on the life of Saoirse, a six-year-old girl who lives with her brother, Ben, and their father, Conor in a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Ireland. When Saoirse is coaxed into the ocean one night by a group of seals,

they reveal not only the creature that she is but what mission she has to accomplish in the future. Song of the Sea made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year where Toronto Review critic Carlos Aguilar described it as ‘one of the most blissfully beautiful animated films ever made’. Oscar nominations aren't given out to just anyone (if you remember, there were shouts of rage when The Lego Movie wasn't nominated in the animation category), so if you want to see what all the fuss is about then you really shouldn't miss this gem when it comes to Wells.
FILMFACTS Clues to Saoirse’s identity come when you spot that her shadow is that of a seal. If you’ve seen The Secret of Kells (and if not then you really should) then keep an eye out for the character of Aisling as she makes a cameo on the bus that Ben and Saoirse get on.

et against the backdrop of the early 1960s, and at a time when the Cold War was a cause of much tension between the United States and Russia, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. focuses on U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) agents Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). The two agents are forced to team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation, which is bent on destabilising the fragile balance of power between the two countries
through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organisation, They must race against time to find her and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. Guy Ritchie, who managed to bring Sherlock Holmes to the big screen in style has now turned his gaze to this classic 60's TV show, and thankfully he's managed to replicate the style of the show perfectly. If you're looking for a dose of secret agent action while you're waiting for Bond, then this is perfect. August 2015

The duo are a formidable pair, and quickly become an invaluable duo in the war against the Taliban. Disaster strikes though when Kyle is killed, and Max, who is now too traumatised to remain in service, is flown back to the States to be adopted by Kyle’s grieving family. Spooked by the slightest sound and finding it hard to adapt to civilian life, Max initially rejects the family, and although they are keen to keep him, fears grow that Max may be too difficult to remain with them. All that changes though, when Kyle’s brother Justin (Josh Wiggins) – who’s initially reluctant to have Max live with them – realises that he’s the only one who can bond with Max.
FILMFACTS The dog of the film, Max, is a Belgian Malinois, which is a type of Belgian Shepherd. This is the same breed of dog used by Seal Team 6 in the hunt for Bin Laden. Thomas Haden Church is probably better known for playing the role of Sandman in Spider-Man 3.

arth is planned for destruction by an alien race, and the only hope for its survival rests with one man – Neil Clarke (Simon Pegg). The aliens (played by the entire Monty Python team of John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin) are kindly giving humanity one last chance to redeem itself and have bestowed upon Neil the power to do anything he wants – and, depending on whether he uses his new powers for the good of the planet or his own selfish aims, he has the power to either save or doom the planet! Absolutely Anything has a classic comedy premise, and the wishes that Neil initially attempt get him into all sorts of trouble. One of the best though, is getting his faithful canine companion Dennis to talk – and the voice supplied to him is none other than the late, great Robin Williams.
FILMFACTS Sadly, this is the final film of Robin Williams, who supplies the voice for Dennis the dog. Although it’s not officially a Monty Python film, it’s the first time that all five surviving members have appeared in the same movie since 1983’s The Meaning of Life.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
RELEASED: 1981 DIRECTOR: Steven Spielberg STARRING: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies, Denholm Elliott, Alfred Molina Setting the scene… With a dramatic start to the film, Dr. Indiana Jones is exploring the Temple of the Chachapoyan Warriors in Peru when he comes across the object he’d been searching for – the Golden Idol of Fertility. Despite initially believing he’d fooled the trap by replacing the idol with a bag of sand of equal weight, it would appear his calculations were wrong, as the trap is set. It’s then a race against time to escape the temple before Jones is crushed by a giant boulder – only to lose the idol to his rival, René Belloq, when he emerges unscathed.

CLASSIC MOVIE MOMENTS
Did you know? The boulder in the scene was actually made of fibreglass, and the production team had an enormous amount of difficulty getting the correct sound effect for it. Eventually, they found it by recording the sound of a car coasting down a gravel embankment. Raiders of the Lost Ark also features the first major acting role for a young Alfred Molina. He played the guide Satipo, who was killed by a trap in the temple after double-crossing Indy and attempting to steal the idol for himself.
