Pete’s Dragon was one of my favourite films as a child, so it was such an honour to work on this movie Bryce Dallas Howard (Grace)

I

n the Pacific Northwest United States, Forest Ranger Grace Meacham (Bryce Dallas Howard) finds a young boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) who lived in the woods for six years with a mysterious dragon named Elliott. With help from her wood-carver father (Robert Redford) and Natalie (Oona Laurence), the daughter of lumber mill owner Jack (Wes Bentley), Grace sets out to find out Pete’s identity and the truth about Elliott. But problems arise when hunter Gavin (Karl Urban), Jack’s brother and

SEE IT IF YOU LIKED

The BFG (2016)

Natalie’s uncle, plans to capture Elliott for themselves. What then follows is a race to protect Pete and Elliott, but can the convince Gavin that Elliott means no harm?

Spook central The original Pete's Dragon film from 1977 is a firm favourite with many an adult, but while that film used a mixture of live action and cartoon animation (to stunning effect), the 2016 update uses cutting edge technology to bring Elliot to life. Pete's Dragon was shot in New Zealand, so the production team called on nearby Weta Digital (who'd previously worked on Planet of the Apes) to create the dragon. Coincidentally, Weta were also working on the giant in The BFG at the same time! It's thanks to the skilled artists at Weta that Elliott is such a wonderfully memorable character.

The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 Forest Ranger Grace finds a boy in the wilderness who’s clearly been feral for some time. 2 They find out that Pete has been out in the wild for six years, so they obviously bring him in. 3 Grace soon discovers that the reason Pete lived so long in the forest was that Elliott the dragon was looking after him. 4 The baddie role is played by Karl Urban.

1

3

FILM FACTS Director David Lowery explained why Elliott is a furry dragon in a recent online article, saying that he’d rather have “the kind of dragon you really want to give a hug to” than a Game of Thrones-type dragon, which he described as “cool, but scaly and cold”.

TRAILER TRAWL

Despite only being 10 years old, Oakes Fegley (Pete), has already been in a string of films and shows, including This is Where I Leave You and Boardwalk Empire.

that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, so the trio takes off on an adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation centre and aquarium. In an effort to find her parents, Dory enlists the help of Hank (Ed O’Neill), a cantankerous octopus; Bailey (Ty Burrell), a beluga whale; and Destiny (Kaitlin Olson), a nearsighted whale shark. Rarely has a sequel come along that we're so excited about, and if Finding Dory is even half as good as the original, then it's a film that simply cannot be missed.

FILM FACTS There was a long campaign for a sequel, which was eventually revealed on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show. It’s been 13 years since Finding Nemo was released, but Finding Dory is actually set just one year after the first film.

Matt Damon returns to the role that made him an unlikely action hero, and joining him is Julia Stiles (reprising her role as Nicky Parsons), Tommy Lee Jones as Robert Dewey the CIA Director, and Alicia Vikander as Heather Lee, a CIA agent. Fans of the series will be delighted to also hear that Paul Greengrass, the director of the second two Bourne Films, is back to direct this one.

FILM FACTS The rumoured title for the film before production began was The Bourne Betrayal. Jeremy Renner will return to the franchise in the next couple of years to shoot a sequel to The Bourne Legacy – which will be released in 2018 or 2020.

Adopted by his own family, he begins to experience what life is truly like for the family pet. If any hope exists of returning to his family, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence.

FILM FACTS Director Barry Sonnenfeld previously gave us the excellent Men in Black movies. In a career spanning over 80 films and TV shows, this is the first time that Kevin Spacey has played a cat – although he did play an insect in A Bug’s Life in 1998.

brought together for a mission that will surely end in their demise – or possibly not, as the comic book has been going for some time now. The Squad features a list of criminals all incarcerated by Batman himself, so you have Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc and, of course, The Joker (played wonderfully by Jared Leto). Batman himself shows up at one point too. Suicide Squad is gloriously over the top, and packed with action throughout. If you prefer your superhero movies with an extra slice of comedy, then this film may well be for you.

FILM FACTS Most of the cast and crew got the tattoo ‘SKWAD’ in honour of the film. The tattoos were even applied by Margot Robbie and Will Smith. Suicide Squad will be released on the 50th anniversary of The Joker’s live-action debut.

After a certain amount of bickering though, the two groups join forces against a common foe – the girls' uncle James (Rafe Spall), who's moored up near the island to write his memoirs. They nickname James 'Captain Flint' and decide to fill their empty summer days pretending he really is a pirate. Before long, it’s clear that burglars are in the area, but what exactly are they after? And what is James’ involvement with it all? All will be revealed in this classic tale.

dgar Wright, the director of, among others, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, returned to Wells and The Blue School, which he attended from 1985 to 1992 to unveil a plaque placed there to celebrate him and his achievements. The plaque was organised by Philip Welch of the Wells Civic Society, and we were delighted to be invited along as well to meet Edgar and be there for the unveiling. Edgar thanked his teachers for their encouragement during his time at the school, saying that the school actually lent him the equipment needed to film one of his first movies – which he then screened at the school, charging 50p a time!

EVENT CINEMA Here’s a breakdown of all of the brilliant special cinema events coming to the Wells Film Centre in the following months.

THE DEEP BLUE SEA

Puccini’s Turandot is one of the greatest operas ever written: brilliant melodies for music lovers, a gripping story for those that need action and drama, an exotic setting and plenty of movement for lovers of stagecraft and visual splendour. Not forgetting an incredible version of Nessun Dorma sung by Riccardo Massi. Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng’s epic take on this Chinese fable, about the ice-cold princess and the suitor determined to win her, will be one for the history books.

STARRING Helen McCrory CERT 12A RELEASE 1st Sep (7pm) LENGTH 150 minutes A flat in Ladbroke Grove, West London in 1952. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile veneer of post-war civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing.

TURANDOT STARRING Dragana Radakovic CERT 12A RELEASE 15th Sep (7pm) LENGTH 135 minutes This year, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour presents a story of a death-marked love told with salt in the air, light on the sails and the city skyline as a backdrop. BUFF BONES WORKOUT AT THE PILATES BODY ALIGNED STUDIO

C

ome along to our NEW Buff Bones classes. It is a medically endorsed full-body workout that is about building your bone strength, functional movement and joint mobility. At around the age of 35, we start to lose bone mass so it’s important to protect and keep bones and joints healthy. Did you know that 1 in 2 women over the age of 50 and 1 in 5 men over the age of 75 have low bone density or osteoporosis? We offer the perfect class for bone building, called Buff Bones. Classes are held on a Monday at 12pm or

Thursday at 12pm at the Pilates Body Aligned Studio. Your Buff bones class involves weight bearing, resistance and impact work. It also enhances muscle tone, improves fascial integrity of the muscles, joint flexibility and mobility, reduces the risk of falling by incorporating the three methods of balance – visual, vestibular and somatosensory (eyes, turning of head and proprioceptors). Book and reserve your places for any classes by calling Zoisa 07973 852529 or Corali 07984 426488 or emailing info@pilatesbodyaligned.uk.

NO MAN’S SKY

T

here’s no denying that No Man’s Sky is a game with lofty ambitions. Part Elite: Dangerous (but with much simpler gameplay) and part Spore, it’s a game with four core values – in it you can indulge in exploration, survival, combat and trading. And plenty of it too, as the game is ruddy huge, as you fly between galaxies and planets, exploring new worlds, collecting new plants and trading with other gamers. The open universe in No Man’s Sky has a total of 18 quintillion planets, so it’s safe to assume that you’ll never visit them all, but you can upload your date to a central Atlas so that it can be traded with other gamers – earning you in-game credit at the same time. Oh, and while playing No Man’s Sky is better online, it can be played offline too. Ambitious in every way and utterly gorgeous to both look at and also play, No Man’s Sky is essential gaming, and a perfect example of what can be done with the current generation of gaming technology when developers make the effort.

5 EXERCISES TO KEEP YOU FIT THIS WEEK Start your path to fitness today! 1. Cardio

4. Flexibility

Try to include some cardiovascular exercise in your daily routine. This can be achieved by going on a halfhour run/walk or visiting your gym. However, there are lots of other things that you can do, such as dog walking or gardening, and sports such as golf or tennis. Even cleaning the house can be hard work and go towards your weekly active minutes.

Child’s Pose – 30 seconds hold x 2

2. Strength Always warm up before starting exercise with some jogging on the spot or skipping, light dynamic stretches and shoulder rotations. ¾ Press Up – 2 sets of 15-20 reps On your knees. Keep hips low and core engaged. Squats – 2 sets of 15-24 reps Head up, shoulders back and chest out. Aim to keep weight over heels.

3. Core Crunch – 2 sets of 15-24 reps Sat up, fingertips on temples, raise shoulder blades off floor and return. Standing March – 2 sets of 15-24 reps Stand up straight, shoulders back, chest out and with both hands on a door frame pushing away from you – don’t lean into it! Then lift one knee up high and then the other one, marching on the spot.

Quad stretch – 30 seconds hold x 2 Standing up with a wall for support, lift your heel towards the back of your leg until you feel a stretch. Try to maintain good posture and push your hips forwards to increase the stretch.

5. Balance Exercises that promote balance are good for training the core muscles that you use every day. Ball move in and out – 6 x 2 reps on each leg Find a ball of any sort and stand on one leg – don’t lock your knee out, keep it soft or slightly bent. Slowly roll the ball out with your foot to the right side and back, and then forwards and backwards, and then to the left and back. Repeat this twice on each leg, but avoid putting too much weight on the ball. James Amos 07783 679532 www.perfectfitwells.com
