ANDRÉ RIEU: CHRISTMAS WITH ANDRÉ
THE NUTCRACKER
STARRING André Rieu CERT U RELEASE 8th Dec (10.30am) LENGTH 130 minutes
The Royal Ballet’s glorious production of The Nutcracker, created by Peter Wright in 1984, is without doubt the production par excellence of an all-time ballet favourite. It’s Christmas Eve, and Drosselmeyer sweeps young Clara away on a fantasy adventure in which time is suspended, the family living room becomes a great battlefield, and a magical journey takes them to the Kingdom of Sweets. Tchaikovsky’s glittering score, the gorgeous festive stage designs and The Royal Ballet’s captivating dancing – including an exquisite pas de deux between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince – make this Nutcracker the quintessential Christmas experience.
André Rieu: Christmas with André is a 130-minute festive celebration, featuring a never before seen 90-minute recorded Christmas concert packed with all the favourites including Hallelujah, Jingle Bells, White Christmas, and many more performed by André and his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra along with his sopranos and tenors. As an exclusive for cinema audiences, André will be inviting his fans to his hometown for a live intimate tour of Maastricht’s magical Christmas highlights, as well as participating in a Q&A with questions submitted by cinema audiences.

Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, broadcast live to cinemas from Wyndham’s Theatre, London. Two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories more unbelievable, the conversation soon turns into a power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. Also starring Owen Teale and Damien Molony, don’t miss this glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic. The broadcast will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and director Sean Mathias.

Derek Cooper, the Poppy Organiser of The Royal British Legion Wells branch, would like to say a massive thank you to all who gave and the many helpers. Those who stood in the cold in the streets at the market stall or did house to house. The dozen of helpers who sat in our supermarkets, and the team that helped get all the poppies and boxes out and back again, count all the money from all over Wells and the surrounding villages – you have been brilliant.

GUILD CELEBRATES FIRST YEAR The perfect place for locally made beautiful presents
T
he Somerset Guild of Craftsmen is celebrating its first year in Wells. The Guild is one of the oldest Crafts Guilds in the country, having been founded in 1933. It has operated from several locations in Somerset, but it is hoped it has now found a permanent home in Wells, the true cultural centre of Somerset. “The first year has not been easy,” reports Guild Master, John Candler. “The economic uncertainty over the past year
has had a noticeable effect on trade.” This Christmas, the Guild is offering a wide range of new products all from excellent local makers – unique gifts at a wide variety of price points. As this small stone relief shows, the Guild will fight hard to become an integral part of Wells life, and we look forward to celebrating with them many more anniversaries to come. The Guild is at 23a Broad Street, through the archway beside Pickwicks. www.somersetguild.co.uk

I
ncredibly, The Last Guardian has been in development for nearly 10 years now. Announced way back in 2007 and originally planned for release on the PS3, delays have meant that now the game is to be released on PlayStation 4 only. And what a game it is. Created by Fumito Ueda, the genius that previously brought us Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, in The Last Guardian you play a young boy who befriends a giant half-bird, half-dog called Trico. Both the boy and Trico are in danger, so it’s up to you to guide the creature to safety. Graphically, The Last Guardian is in a league of its own, as its unique look and feel is unlike any other PS4 game you’ve played. But the standout feature of the game has to be the technical achievement of bringing Trico to life. The way the animal moves and the interactions with the boy is outstanding. Ueda’s previous games are emotional rollercoasters that pull you in, engage you and force you to create attachments to the characters within them, and it’s clear that The Last Guardian continues that theme.
