Hope you enjoy the magazine, and see you in the cinema soon. Sally Cooper Proprietor, Wells Film Centre
The Wells Film Centre was established in 1992 by Derek Cooper. Derek has been in the cinema industry for over 30 years, and started in the old Regal cinema – just next door to the Wells Film Centre. Originally a village hall and scout hut, Derek built the cinema up from a single screen to the three state-of-the-art digital screens it now houses. In the last couple of years, Derek has passed the management of the Wells Film Centre over to his daughters Sally, Becky and Libby, who share Derek’s passion for film and will ensure that the Wells Film Centre remains a family business that the whole community can enjoy.

aking such a beloved national institution as Dad's Army and rebooting it for a modern audience is always fraught with danger. With a new cast and a fresh script, can it possibly recreate the fun and humour of the original, while making sure it appeals to as many new cinemagoers as possible? Directed by Oliver Parker – who’s previously given us some classic British characters such as St Trinian’s and The Importance of Being Earnest – and written by Hamish McColl, the writer of the brilliant Paddington film of 2014, it’s fair to say that this new version of Dad’s Army is in safe hands. With the catchphrases of the original TV series fully intact (‘Don’t panic!’ and ‘Stupid boy’ to name but two) and every character perfectly cast, fans of the show from the 1970s will
immediately feel right at home. Speaking of casting, the boys of Walmington-on-Sea have all found their perfect modern counterparts. The lead role of Captain Mainwaring is taken up by the always-brilliant Toby Jones, while Bill Nighy plays Sergeant Wilson, Michael Gambon plays Private Godfrey, Tom Courtenay respectfully plays the part of Lance Corporal Jones (originally played by Clive Dunn), and the bumbling Private Pike is The Inbetweeners’ Blake Harrison. The film is set in 1944, nearing the end of the Second World War. Although the war has been quiet for the lads of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, all that is about to change when MI5 inform them that a German spy has been transmitting from the town. Can they catch the spy and save the day before the Germans invade?
TRAILER TRAWL The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones) receives word that there’s a German spy in the area. 2 Then journalist Rose Winters (Catherine Zeta-Jones) turns up to write an article on the Home Guard. 3 There’s excitement when they discover a coded message! 4 The ‘boys’ go undercover to catch the spy, but will they manage it in time?

he Danish Girl is set in the early 1920s in Copenhagen. The illustrator and artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband, Einar Wegener (Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne), to stand in for a female model, but the popularity of the portraits leads

to Gerda painting her husband in further pictures as a woman. Einar develops an attraction for the female physical appearance and begins living as a woman named Lili Elbe. Eventually, Elbe becomes the first ever recipient of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery, and Gerda supports her decision, although their marriage becomes strained when Gerda realises that Lili is no longer the person she married. Beautifully filmed and featuring stunning performances from all the leads, The Danish Girl is a powerful and thoughtful film that definitely should not be missed.
January 2016
FILM FACTS The Danish Girl is based on the novel of the same name by David Ebershoff. The book is a fictionalised account of the life of Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe, and although some elements remain true to Lili’s story, many bits have been created for dramatic effect.

– along with two other bounty hunters they meet along the way. At Minnie’s they encounter four more strangers: Bob ‘The Mexican’ (Demian Bichir), Oswaldo ‘The Little Man’ Mobray (Tim Roth), Joe ‘The Cow Puncher’ Gage (Michael Madsen), and ex-General Sanford ‘The Confederate’ Smithers (Bruce Dern). Through betrayal and deception, the eight strangers soon learn that they may not make it to Red Rock after all. Keeping the Western theme of his previous film, Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino is back with another slice of Old West gold in The Hateful Eight.
FILM FACTS The first draft of the script to The Hateful Eight was leaked online a couple of years ago, initially forcing Tarantino to cancel the film. After he got the actors together for a script reading with an audience though, he was convinced to go ahead and make it anyway.

ring by Ivan Drago in the classic film, Rocky III. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a professional boxer, Johnson begs Rocky to train him, and although he’s reluctant at first, the young fighter soon wins him around. Can the young hopeful climb out of the shadow of his father’s success and claim the title for himself? Thankfully, you don’t have long to find out. Creed has garnered some stellar reviews from the movie press, with most people saying that it’s a worthy addition to the Rocky series – which is no mean feat.
January 2016
FILM FACTS At the time of the film’s release, Sylvester Stallone was the same age as Burgess Meredith (69) was when he starred in the first Rocky movie in 1976. Stallone has indicated in interviews that he would love Creed to become a series of films.

As she prepares herself for the fifth and final wave, Cassie teams up with a young man Evan (Alex Roe), who may become her final hope to find Sammy – if she can only trust him. The latest Young Adult novel to be converted to film, The 5th Wave is an action-packed movie about what could happen when the aliens come and they're far from friendly. Determined to wipe out humanity and claim the planet for themselves, the hope of the human race lies with the handful of survivors who are left after the previous attacks. January 2016
FILM FACTS Chloë Grace Moretz was the only actor to audition for the lead role of Cassie Sullivan, as she was a fan favourite from the start. No one was more delighted about this than Moretz herself, as she is a big fan of the books – there is a total of three books in the series.

The film follows Glass’ navigation of a vicious winter to survive and seek vengeance on those who left him to die and murdered his young Native-American son. And in case you were wondering about the name of the film, a revenant is a being that returns from the dead. There's no denying that The Revenant is a bleak film with an extremely dark tone, but it's also one that's hard to forget, and for the right reasons. Violent and powerful, it's a stunning tale of revenge and retribution that pulls no punches whatsoever and leaves a lasting impression on anyone who sees it.

although they were still alive, it was a race against time to get to them before their meagre food supplies ran out. Antonio Banderas stars as 'Super' Mario Sepúlveda, who became the public face of the miners who sent videos to the rescuers to update them on the captive's condition. And although you might think you know the story, The 33 is a riveting drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first frame until the very closing credits, and is an uplifting tale of the human spirit and determination for survival against almost impossible odds. January 2016
FILM FACTS The owner of the mine ignored warnings that it was unsafe, and the mining company responsible for it did not attempt a rescue, assuming that the miners had all been killed. It was only when the Chilean government stepped in that the rescue began.

The first official shot for the Ghostbusters reboot spooks the Internet
O
ne of the biggest films due to come out in 2016 (July 15, to be exact) has to be the Ghostbusters reboot. With an all-female cast, this new film takes the bare bones of the original story and takes it off in a different direction, so if you’re expecting the same plot and character names as the 1984 original then you’re likely to

be disappointed – or pleased, depending on how excited you are about this reboot. Starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as the two leads (Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert respectively), and with Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones making up the quartet, the plot for the new film sees a ghostly invasion of Manhattan and,

Although yet to be released over here at the time of writing this, Creed has been such a huge success in the States that Sylvester Stallone is considering at least one more film to continue the story of Apollo Creed’s son.
Speaking of Rocky, Jeremy Renner is apparently in talks to take the lead in a biopic of boxer Rocky Marciano. It’s early days yet, but studio heads seem to think that Renner would be perfect for the role.

JULY despite the group being a laughing stock in New York, it quickly becomes apparent that these four women could be the only ones to save the world! Interestingly, the film features cameos from the living stars of the first two films – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts – but it’s not clear if they will be reprising their original roles.
Another film series apparently planning a reboot is The Mummy, but after the last film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was so disappointing, the distributors are going all out to makes sure the next one is a success – and are chasing Tom Cruise for the lead role.

IN THEIR
OWN WORDS
PIECES OF EIGHT Before The Hateful Eight was filmed, Quentin Tarantino hosted a special event where the stars read the script live on-stage. Here the actors share the experience in their own words.
Kurt Russell (John Ruth) “When I found out we were going to be doing this at a theatre with 1,600 seats for charity, I thought, ‘okay, this is good’. It was kind of special. There was a lot of energy in the theatre. People were excited to hear it.” Tim Roth (Oswaldo Mobray) “The reading was a mixture of film and theatre. It was extraordinary fun but I was exhausted by the end of it. Everyone was revved up and nervous. Quentin made a show out of it, and it was a hot ticket. The audience went crazy for it.”

Walton Goggins (Chris Mannix) “In that moment, we all looked at each other, and we all felt the same way: whether this gets made or not is irrelevant. We were here for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, and if it were to get made, then that would just be the icing on the cake.” Samuel L. Jackson (Marquis Warren) “People gave us a standing ovation after the reading, which was amazing. We all looked at each other, thinking, ‘how’s he not going to make this movie after that?”

STAR WARS CAMEOS REVEALED!
The stars were lining up to appear, apparently
T
he chance to appear in The Force Awakens was too much to resist, so here’s a few hidden or rare cameos of stars that were desperate for a role in the new Star Wars film.
1 Daniel Craig (Stormtrooper JB-007) Craig shows up as the
Stormtrooper charged with guarding Rey.
Lawrence Fishburne has been spotted filming scenes for John Wick 2, reuniting him with Keanu Reeves – the two both appeared in The Matrix. We’re hoping that the sequel, which is due out later in the year, will be every bit as good as the first film.
2 Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt) A larger role for the massive Star Wars fan, Pegg plays the trader who Rey collects for. 3 Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) McGregor came in to record a few lines of dialogue for a flashback sequence. 4 Thomas Brodie-Sangster (First Order Officer) In a small cameo, The Maze Runner’s Brodie-Sangster plays a First Order baddie. 5 Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix) Carrie Fisher’s own daughter gets a small role as one of the Resistance in the main base.
6 Harriet Walter (Dr. Kalonia) Downton Abbey’s Lady Shackleton plays the doctor who tends to Chewbacca’s wound.
One of our favourite films of 2014 was Guardians of the Galaxy, and we’re excited to hear that director James Gunn is keen to sign up veteran actor Kurt Russell to play Star-Lord’s father.

hen FBI agent Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) goes undercover to catch a criminal gang of extreme sports athletes led by the charismatic Bodhi (Édgar Ramirez), little does he know that he’s being drawn into a world that could end his life. The original Point Break film, which was released in 1991 and starred Patrick Swayze as Bodhi and Keanu Reeves as Utah, has become something of a classic. And for good reason, but this remake ramps up the action with some stunning stunts, making it a thrill-ride of a movie from start to finish.

ased on a true story, The Finest Hours tells the tale of a rescue mission that took place in 1952 off the Cape Cod coast after two oil tankers, SS Fort Mercer and SS Pendleton, were destroyed by treacherous winter winds and waves. Obviously the drama level is ramped up to the max in the film, but it also deals with the various personalities onboard the tankers and how they are forced to work together to survive. Visually stunning throughout, The Finest Hours should be one to watch this month.

Many suitors dream of marrying the lovely and sweet-natured Bianca, including Lucentio. However, her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered Katherina, is married herself. French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy tailored to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, non-stop dance unlike any other, revealing the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way. This new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi and cannot be seen anywhere else!
Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, defined the English style. In this double programme, the Company celebrates Ashton and his legacy in two contrasting works. Rhapsody, created in 1980, is one of Ashton’s final pieces. Created for Mikhail Baryshnikov, it is a celebration of the male virtuoso – though Ashton also endows the Principal female role with choreography of breathtaking clarity and speed. The Two Pigeons (1962) is a quintessential Ashton work. In his story of a wayward young man blind to the value of what is right in front him, Ashton explores the nature of love in one of his most charming, elegant and moving works.

World War II drama, Another Mother’s Son, recently filmed in Wells
t’s been a big year for filming in Wells, what with the sequel to The Huntsman shooting at the Bishop’s Palace in the summer and scenes for US show Galavant as well. It was rounded off in December with Another Mother’s Son, a World War II drama starring John Hannah, Jenny Seagrove, Boyzone’s Ronan Keating (in his first major role) and Sherlock’s Amanda Abbington. The Market Square was transformed into wartime St. Helier for the film, which is based on the true story of Jersey woman Louise Gould, who took in an escaped Russian prisoner of war and hid him for the course of the war. There’s no firm release date for Another Mother’s Son at present, which was entirely shot in the South West – including Priddy and Bath.

COMMUNITYNEWS PILATES KNOW HOW
Pilates Body Aligned’s Zoisa Holder explains how Pilates really helped her recovery after an operation
M
y name is Zoisa Holder and I have been teaching Pilates and other movementbased activities for over 10 years. I love movement and love how Pilates is more that just exercise, it is about becoming aware of how you move, your alignment, each and every part of you as a whole and individually. We have such amazing bodies that are adaptable and carry us through our lives that sometimes we take them for granted. I love the selfknowledge, awareness and personal empowerment that doing and teaching Pilates has given me. In January 2015 I had a C-section myomectomy to remove a large fibroid. Then, during October to December 2015, I had three further operations to have one mole removed from the calf that turned out to be a melanoma, one from the bottom of my other foot (all clear), and a third was a further excision on the calf – and also two sentinel lymph nodes removed from the groin area. My experience and knowledge of Pilates has been such an asset to assist me in my on-going recovery and rehabilitation, as well as giving

me invaluable experiential knowledge of how it feels to be a beginner at Pilates, and to have to learn how to move again. I learned where extra tension was created in my body due to lack of mobility and ways that I compensated so that I could still move. I gained more knowledge and understanding of what people can go through and to help rehabilitate anyone who has gone through similar experiences, whether through injury or operation. Pilates for me is about being able to live your life and move with ease. It is gentle, strengthening and mobilising. Each class is tailored to what people need and require at that time. It’s about getting to know your body, working to your abilities on that day at that time and honouring it. Come and join me at Pilates Body Aligned, 9a Market Street, Wells, and experience it for yourself. You can also call on 07973 852529.
