THE WELLS FILM CENTRE STORY

WELCOME

The sun’s shining and summer is most definitely here, and the blockbuster films are heading to the Wells Film Centre! We had Jurassic World and Minions in June and we’ve got Inside Out to look forward to this month. We were overwhelmed with the response to the first issue of Widescreen. The amount of positive comment we had from it was lovely to hear, and we’re so pleased that you all liked it. Remember that it’s very much a community magazine, so if there’s

The Wells Film Centre was established in 1992 by Derek Cooper. Derek has been in the cinema industry for over 30 years, and started in the old Regal cinema – just next door to the Wells Film Centre. Originally a village hall and scout hut, Derek built the cinema up from a single screen to the three state-of-the-art digital screens it now houses. In the last couple of years, Derek has passed the management of the Wells Film Centre over to his daughters Sally, Becky and Libby, who share Derek’s passion for film and will ensure that the Wells Film Centre remains a family business that the whole community can enjoy.

SPIDER-MAN TO REBOOT WITH NEW ACTOR

It’s Garfield out and Holland in, as Marvel announce that they’ve found their hero

T

om Holland, a practically unknown 19-yearold British actor, has landed the role of his lifetime and has signed up to play Peter Parker (aka, Spider-Man) in another reboot of the series – beating five other actors to the part. The next Spider-Man film isn’t due out until 2017, but those keen to see him in action will only have to wait until April next year when he has a small cameo in the next Captain America movie.

July 2015

Holland started his acting career in the theatres of the West End, appearing in Billy Elliot the Musical, before small but pivotal roles in film. His first major part was in 2012’s The Impossible, where Holland played the son of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and he’ll next be seen in Heart of the Sea. Holland is a keen dancer and acrobat, although whether or not that had an influence in him getting the role is unclear. Having seen the videos Holland

2017 posted on Instagram though, it’s obvious he’s got the moves to do the Webslinger justice. Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) was one of the leading candidates to play Peter Parker, but apparently it all came down to a series of complex screentests that Holland and the other shortlisted actors had to go through – acting alongside Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. – and clearly Holland had the edge over the others. We look forward to seeing his take on the classic superhero next year.

After the hype surrounding the release of Pixels, another 80’s video game is heading to the big screen. Rampage, starring Dwayne Johnson, will see giant gorillas, lizards and wolves terrorising a city.

The hot rumour this month is that, after starring in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March of next year, Ben Affleck will direct and star in a standalone Batman film in November 2018. The title? It’ll simply be called The Batman.

ccasionally, when a movie still or poster appears online and we simply have to share it, then this is the place you’ll find it. This month we were spoilt for choice, as it was a closerun thing between the brilliant shot of Chris Pratt taming the kids or this promotional poster for Ted 2 that perfectly mimics the Flash Gordon original. If you remember from the first film, both John and Ted are huge fans of the cult 80’s film – and its star, Sam J. Jones even shows up at Ted’s housewarming party – but even we weren’t expecting a poster this good.

STARS LINE UP FOR NEW BOURNE FILM

TBA

In a perfect piece of casting news, Vin Diesel has been confirmed as the new face of Kojak – the hit cop show from the 1970s. No news on a release date, but British writer Philip Gawthorne has just been signed up to write the screenplay.

Filming to start soon on Bourne 5

A

new Bourne film starring Matt Damon and directed once again by Paul Greengrass is definitely happening, and there’s been some interesting casting news recently, too. Julia Stiles recently confirmed that she’ll once again be playing the role of covert agent Nicky Parson, and the latest info released from the production team is that Ex Machina’s Alicia Vikander will also appear in a currently unnamed part. But that’s not all, as we’ve heard a rumour that the villain of the film may be none other than Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen.

WE’RE THE MILLERS 2

No news on how many of the original cast are returning for the sequel, but we do know that a script has now been written for it.

DODGEBALL 2

The sequel was announced a couple of years ago, with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller returning, but there’s been little news since then.

Another rumour currently attached to the movie grapevine is that Beyoncé is in talks with Marvel to join the cast of The Avengers. There’s no news on the role Marvel have in mind, but she’d definitely make a welcome addition to the team.

LATEST ON INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

2016

Everything we know so far

A

t a press conference this week, the cast of Independence Day 2 (which is now subtitled Resurgence) gave out some interesting titbits about the film, which is pencilled in for a release on the 24th of June next year. It’s been 20 years since the first alien invasion, and despite getting defeated then, they’ve regrouped and are trying again. With a bigger threat to the safety of Earth, it’s reassuring to

find out that Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch are returning as David and Julius Levinson, and that David is in charge of protecting the planet. Also back are Bill Pullman as the (ex) President and Vivica Fox as Jasmine, the girlfriend of Will Smith’s character. Sadly Will won’t be back as Steven Hiller, but youthful alien ass-kicking will be ably supplied by Liam Hemsworth as the main new addition to the cast.

STAR OF THE MONTH CHRIS PRATT

If you’ve seen Jurassic World then you’ll remember the scene where Chris Pratt’s character, Owen Grady, attempts to calm a trio of bitey raptors. Well, after zoo keepers around the world replicated that image (it’s called ‘Prattkeeping’, apparently), he decided to reclaim it in style by staging it with three patients of a children’s hospital in Louisiana. While he was there, Chris also found the time to chat to the kids, sign some posters and play games with them. What a hero.

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS

THE BEAR

FACTS The man behind the voice of Ted himself, Seth MacFarlane, gives us his thoughts on making the sequel to one of our favourite comedies.

On how Ted 2 nearly didn’t happen “I actually hadn’t planned on making Ted 2, but any time something does well, that always comes up. There’s no reason to do it if you’re going to repeat the same movie. It’s not satisfying for the audience, and it’s really boring for us.” Working With Mark Wahlberg “Mark is brilliant at everything you ask him to do. His attitude is always, ‘If it works for you, I’m in.’ He’s a fantastic dramatic actor and he’s a fantastic comedic actor, and that includes both subtle verbal comedy and physical comedy. There’s nothing the guy can’t do.”

Morgan Freeman is a wizard? “It was a huge coup for us to get Morgan. We needed somebody who, when you open that door to his office and he stands up, you know instantly that this is the wizard at the end of the yellow brick road.” Acting opposite an invisible character “It’s difficult for an actor to act opposite a character that’s not there, because so much of your performance depends on what you get from the other person. Here we tried to make it easier because I was physically there doing the lines from the movie. They’re at least getting the voice of the character, and not just somebody doing a read-in.” July 2015

ith Inside Out, the 15th film from the Pixar studio due for release any day now, it’s easy to forget how, in such a relatively short space of time, Pixar has gone from nothing to become one of the largest film studios in the world. But how did they get there, and what are the secrets of their success?

Not-so-humble beginnings The company we now know as Pixar began in 1979 when Star Wars’ George Lucas created the Graphics Group, part of the computer division of Lucasfilm. The aim of the group was to develop state-of-theart computer technology for the film industry. Lucas was a true visionary and could see the potential of computer graphics in films, so he wanted to build a team that would do it better than anyone else. The early years of the group were spent developing a rendering system and special effects

sequences with Industrial Light & Magic – another group created by Lucas that created some of the most memorable movie computer graphics sequences of the 80s and early 90s. The Graphics Group were slowly making a name for themselves, but the turning point would be when Apple’s Steve Jobs (who’d just been fired by the company he set up) shared Lucas’ vision and bought up the company, renaming it Pixar and developing a computer system that could then be sold on to companies so they could create their own graphical effects.

Rising star One key figure during this time was a young animator by the name of John Lasseter. Hired to create animation demos to show off Pixar’s technology, it was when he made the legendary Luxo Jr., a short film about two lamps and a rubber ball that people really sat up and took notice. Not only did Pixar have the hardware and the software, but with talent like Lasseter, they had the creative minds to make the very most out of both of them. “I started working on doing lamps,” says Lasseter. “I modelled one Luxo lamp, and then a ››

I went back to working on the lamp, but wondered what the lamp would look like as a baby. So I animated it, and the story developed as I went. Basically, I wanted people who had never even seen a computer before to look at it and enjoy it as a film.”

And enjoy it they did. While Pixar began to realise that sales of its computer systems were declining, others were noticing their animation work. Companies began to hire them to produce their adverts and then, in 1991, Pixar signed a distribution deal with Disney to produce three films for them, the first of which would be Toy Story. As we all know, Toy Story was a massive hit, grossing over $360 million worldwide – it was also nominated for three Oscars. Following that with A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2, it was clear that Pixar were already the leading force in the relatively new medium of computer-animated films.

The rise and rise of Pixar Knowing a good thing when they see it, Disney bought up Pixar in 2006 for a whopping $7.4 billion, and the hits kept on coming. Finding Nemo went on to be the most popular DVD release of all time (selling 40 million copies worldwide) and the sales for the merchandise for Cars totalled a staggering $10 billion! Usually dealing with original topics (a rat that’s a chef and controls a human by tugging different clumps of hair?), strong characters and a level of humour that was unheard of in previous family films. Adults would suddenly happily take their kids to see a Pixar film, knowing that they’d enjoy it as much at their children did.

A meeting of minds It’s fair to say that Pixar contains some of the brightest minds in the industry. Famously, during a single lunchtime meeting at a diner, the creative heads gathered there managed to come up with the story ideas for A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc., Finding Nemo and WALL-E – the diner, Hidden City Cafe, was immortalised in a scene in Monster’s Inc. to acknowledge this.

And, with six films in development, it’s clear that Pixar will be around for many more years to come.

FILMFACTS If you want more minions films, then there are three short minions movies on each DVD or Blue-ray for Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. Missing Gru? He’s not in the Minions movie, but Despicable Me 3 has been confirmed for release in 2017.

QUEEN AND COUNTRY 15

RELEASED

3 JUL

STARRING: Callum Turner, Caleb Landry Jones, David Thewlis, Richard E. Grant, Vanessa Kirby DIRECTOR: John Boorman RUN TIME: 114 minutes

A

sk anyone of a certain age what their favourite film of the 80s was, and we'd wager that a fair few of them would mention John Boorman's Hope and Glory in their shortlist. It was a semi-autobiographical film about Boorman’s own experiences of growing up in London during the Blitz of World War 2, and despite the potentially gloomy tone, it was surprisingly uplifting – and the scene where the boy realises he’s getting time off school because it was hit by a bomb has now become a classic. Skip forward a whopping 27 years and, with Queen and Country,

Boorman has finally given his fans what they wanted and continues the story of Bill Rohan (this time played by Callum Turner). It’s nearly a decade later in the story and Bill has been drafted into the army and begins basic training during the Korean War in the 1950s – although he never actually gets to travel to the war itself. Bill quickly teams up with troublemaker Percy (Caleb Landry Jones) and push their superior officers Major Bradley (David Thewlis) and Major Cross (Richard E. Grant) to their limits as they ignore orders and generally try to survive the army with as little stress as possible. July 2015

FILMFACTS Queen and Country is a sequel to the 1987 film, Hope and Glory. Director and writer John Boorman (who also directed, among others, Deliverance and Excalibur) based both movies on his experiences as a child growing up in wartime Britain and his time in the army during the 1950s.

8 JUL

STARRING: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman, Sam J. Jones DIRECTOR: Seth MacFarlane RUN TIME: 115 minutes

T

he idea behind Ted was so fresh and original that it was always going to attract people's attention. The fact that it was also hilarious just made people fall in love with it – as well as its foulmouthed star. Considering that the first Ted film was one of the biggestgrossing comedies of 2012 (in fact it’s the highest-grossing original ‘R’ rated comedy of all time) meant that a sequel was always going to happen. Thankfully for us, Ted 2 is just as funny (if not funnier!) than the first film. Seth MacFarlane returns as writer, director and the voice of Ted, John’s teddy bear that magically came

32

to life and grew up with slacker John (Mark Wahlberg) to eventually settle down, marry his sweetheart TamiLynn (Jessica Barth) and think about starting a family. Without going into too much biological detail, this proves difficult for the couple and when they plan to adopt, the powers that be say that Ted must prove that he’s a real person and not just property before him and Tami-Lynn can become parents. So, on one hand you could say that Ted 2 is a gross-out comedy and on the other it’s a morality tale. Luckily, it’s a combination that somehow works perfectly.

FILMFACTS Fans of the TV show Entourage might be interested to know that Mark Wahlberg’s friend Johnny Alves (who the character of Johnny Drama is based on) auditioned for Ted 2. Mila Kunis sadly couldn’t appear in Ted 2 as she was pregnant at the time of filming.

THE CHOIR PG

10 JUL

STARRING: Dustin Hoffman, Garrett Wareing, Debra Winger, Kathy Bates, Eddie Izzard DIRECTOR: François Girard RUN TIME: 103 minutes

T

he young Stet (Garrett Wareing) is a troubled and angry 11-year-old orphan who, after the death of his mother, is placed in the National Boychoir Academy, a boarding school for young boys with a talent for singing. Grieving for his mother and feeling abandoned by his father (who’s remarried and has kept Stet a secret from his new wife), Stet is unpopular with the other students and undisciplined, despite having an enormous talent for singing. The master of the choir, Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman), soon notices the boy’s singing ability and gives Stet the

encouragement he needs to rise up the ranks to become one of the stars of the choir. Dustin Hoffman excels as the demanding but sensitive Master Carvelle, but despite his enormous presence in the film, the rest of the cast of The Choir are given the space to more than hold their own. The young actor Garrett Wareing is superb as the troubled Stet and the supporting cast of Debra Winger, Kathy Bates and Eddie Izzard are all perfect for their roles. Those looking for a smart and heartwarming film to watch could do a lot worse than check out The Choir. July 2015

FILMFACTS Much like his character in the film, Dustin Hoffman seriously considered playing the piano professionally – luckily for us though, he chose acting as a career. Next year, Hoffman will return to play Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda 3.

RELEASED

17 JUL

STARRING: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Judy Greer, Hayley Atwell, Bobby Cannavale DIRECTOR: Peyton Reed RUN TIME: 115 minutes

T

hey say good things come in small packages, and although Ant-Man may be diminutive in height, his first foray into the giddy world of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is definitely a triumphantly large one. Ant-Man starts with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that created the technology behind Ant-Man and is now looking to pass it on to someone new. That (initially) reluctant hero is Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a petty criminal that’s looking to change his career path and find himself a job that’s unlikely to get him arrested. After talking to Pym

34

widescreen

July 2015

though, he eventually takes on the role of Ant-Man – a job that won’t get him arrested but could get him killed. When Lang dons the Ant-Man suit he’s immediately reduced to the size of an ant, which obviously isn’t as threatening as some superheroes we could mention, but when you factor in the fact that the suit gives you super-human strength, it gets much more interesting. With technology of that power, it’s not long before the bad guys discover it and try to steal it for themselves though. Ant-Man is most definitely a different type of superhero, and we recommend it wholeheartedly.

FILMFACTS Wells’ own Edgar Wright was originally signed up to write/direct Ant-Man, and worked on the film for 10 years, but left last year due to ‘creative differences’ with Marvel. It’s difficult to know if the final film is similar to the one Wright proposed, but he still has a writing credit, so we’re hopeful.

MAGIC MIKE XXL 15

RELEASED

17 JUL

STARRING: Channing Tatum, Elizabeth Banks, Matt Bomer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Andie MacDowell DIRECTOR: Gregory Jacobs RUN TIME: 115 minutes

T

he first Magic Mike film was probably the surprise hit of 2012 (the same year that we were introduced to a certain talking teddy bear, too) as it cost just $7 million to make and took a staggering $167 million at the box office. It made a star of Channing Tatum, who came up with the original idea for the film, and so a sequel was inevitable. In Magic Mike XXL, we fastforward three years. At the end of the first film Mike bowed out of the stripping life at the top of his game, and it appears that the rest of the Kings of Tampa stripping crew feel

the same way. The guys want to go out in style though, and a reunion (complete with Mike himself ) is organised to take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for one last blow-out performance. So the guys organise a classic road trip, pack the baby oil and off they go. One thing we can happily promise is that fans of the first film will find a lot to like here. Although Matthew McConaughey will not be returning for the sequel (due to pay demands, apparently), the rest of the Kings will be, along with newcomers Elizabeth Banks, Jada Pinkett Smith and Andie MacDowell. July 2015

FILMFACTS Channing Tatum was actually the inspiration for the first Magic Mike film. Around 1998 he was working as a stripper under the name of ‘Chan Crawford’ but after leaving that to become a model, he said in an interview that he wanted to make a movie about his experiences. The rest, as they say, is history.

HOT PURSUIT 12A

31 JUL

STARRING: Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara, Matthew Del Negro, Robert Kazinsky DIRECTOR: Anne Fletcher RUN TIME: 87 minutes

F

ollowing hot (ahem) on the heels of 2013's The Heat, which starred Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, comes this new unlikely buddy movie, Hot Pursuit. In it, Reese Witherspoon plays the role of Rose Cooper, an uptight cop who's forced into protecting Daniella Cortez (Sofia Vergara), after Cortez’s husband agrees to testify against a powerful drug lord. Naturally though, things don’t go quite according to plan, and within the blink of an eye, people are murdered, things explode and the pair are fugitives on the run – literally handcuffed to each other.

36

widescreen

July 2015

With the drug gangs and enough corrupt cops to fill a New York station house hot on their trail, Cooper and Cortez are forced to work together to survive and, hopefully, clear their names into the bargain. After more serious roles recently (Wild, for example), it’s worth remembering that Reese Witherspoon is a fine comedy actress, and here she gets to prove it in some classic scenes. Sofia Vergara also gets to flex her comedy acting chops here too, as Daniella is a character that’s spoilt, difficult to please and impossibly demanding. And together? Well, they’re the perfect comedy match.

FILMFACTS Hot Pursuit was released 28 years to the day after the 1987 film of the same name. Although they do share a name, both films are very different. During a physical scene, Sofia Vergara was accidentally a bit rough with Reese Witherspoon and Reese ended up in hospital!

SONG OF THE SEA PG

RELEASED

7 AUG

STARRING: Brendan Gleeson, Lisa Hannigan, Fionnula Flanagan, Lucy O’Connell DIRECTOR: Tomm Moore RUN TIME: 93 minutes

I

rish director Tomm Moore follows up 2009’s The Secret of Kells (which is a firm favourite in the Widescreen office) with this Oscar-nominated beauty. Song of the Sea is another Celticinfluenced tale as it’s based on the ancient myth of the Selkie, a creature that lives in the sea as a seal but then transforms into human shape when it steps onto land. The film concentrates on the life of Saoirse, a six-year-old girl who lives with her brother, Ben, and their father, Conor in a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Ireland. When Saoirse is coaxed into the ocean one night by a group of seals,

they reveal not only the creature that she is but what mission she has to accomplish in the future. Song of the Sea made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year where Toronto Review critic Carlos Aguilar described it as ‘one of the most blissfully beautiful animated films ever made’. Oscar nominations aren't given out to just anyone (if you remember, there were shouts of rage when The Lego Movie wasn't nominated in the animation category), so if you want to see what all the fuss is about then you really shouldn't miss this gem when it comes to Wells. July 2015

FILMFACTS Clues to Saoirse’s identity come when you spot that her shadow is that of a seal. If you’ve seen The Secret of Kells (and if not then you really should) then keep an eye out for the character of Aisling as she makes a cameo on the bus that Ben and Saoirse get on.

I

f you want to find out more about the TV shows and films shot in Wells then we recommend you check out Siobhan’s Film and TV walk, or her Hot Fuzz location walk. Each one begins and ends at the Crown and lasts about an hour and a half. Siobhan also does a Wells Heritage walk, which leaves the Crown at 11am every Wednesday until the middle of October, countryside rambles, a Children’s walk, Literary walk, Food History walk and a Ghost tour. Upcoming tours for this month include the Hot Fuzz walk on 18th July at 3pm and the Ghost tour on the 25th July at 7pm. Word recently got out that a major Hollywood movie is filming scenes in the city around the 16th of July. The Huntsman, which is a prequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, is the film rumoured to be coming to Wells, although it’s still unclear which of the stars will be filming here.

Wolf Hall Based on the novel by Hilary Mantel, sections of Wolf Hall were filmed around Wells Cathedral in July of last year. The Hollow Crown The second series of The Hollow Crown, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Richard III, is due for release on TV next year. Dr Who The Time Lord himself came to Wells in 2006 to film sequences for The Lazarus Experiment episode – which also starred Mark Gatiss. The climatic scenes for the episode were all shot in the Cathedral. Hot Fuzz Surely everyone in the city knows that Hot Fuzz was shot in Wells, but did you know that there are some surprising cameos in the film? And that Edgar Wright’s old drama teacher appears, too? Siobhan does, and those and many other behind-the-scenes titbits are all part of the Hot Fuzz tour.

ocal Pilates instructors Corali Sacerdote, Zoisa Holder and Clare Jevons were delighted with the success of their first charity event, held at the Pilates Body Aligned Studio in Wells on Sunday 14th June, which raised over £1,600 for three charities. The Pilates Marathon, which saw over 45 clients take part in up to four hours of Pilates classes, raised funds for Transverse Myelitis, the MS society and Parkinsons. Vicky Whittaker from Chewton Mendip, who took part in the marathon, was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis in 2014. She said, “Attending regular Pilates classes has definitely helped with my recovery.” Studio co-owners, Zoisa Holder and Corali Sacerdote, said, “We were overwhelmed by our clients’ enthusiasm for this event and are delighted to raise awareness of Pilates as a movement training method which assists with the management of these particular conditions.” The organisers would like to say a massive thank you to all those who participated and kindly supported this event. A special thanks goes to local businesses Good Earth and Intersport, as well as Body Control Pilates, Sissel UK and the three charities.

JURASSIC PARK

RELEASED: 1993  DIRECTOR: Steven Spielberg  STARRING: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Samuel L. Jackson Setting the scene… Towards the end of the guest’s tour of Jurassic Park, Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) cuts the power and heads off to sell the dinosaur embryos. With the tour halted due to a power failure, the protective electric fences are disabled and one, rather large, attraction of the park decides to use this opportunity for a bit of a walkabout. It’s then that Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero) – who’s in a jeep with John Hammond’s (Richard Attenborough) grandchildren – spots the ripples in the glasses of water on the jeep’s dashboard…

CLASSIC MOVIE MOMENTS

Did you know? It was when Steven Spielberg was listening to a bass-heavy song in his car that he got the idea for the scene, but getting the ripples right was proving tricky. Then one of the special effects crew noticed that a glass of water rippled perfectly when placed on a guitar when a bass string was plucked. They then rigged up a string underneath the jeep’s dashboard and the scene was set. Oh, and to get the roar for the T-rex they had to use a combination of dog, tiger, alligator, penguin and elephant sounds! 
