ou have to feel a little sorry for poor Max (Louis C.K.), a terrier who lives in an apartment building in Manhattan. Every day his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) leaves him in the flat while she’s at work. And then, to make matters even worse, she goes and gets a giant sloppy mongrel named Duke (Eric Stonestreet) into the apartment to live with them. Max and Duke fight from the start, but they have to put their quarrels behind when a seemingly adorable white rabbit named Snowball (brilliantly voiced by the hilarious Kevin Hart) and his army of abandoned animals (lovingly called the ‘Flushed Pets’) launch a criminal conspiracy to exact retaliation on all happily owned pets and their owners – clearly this is one rabbit with some very serious issues.

Fans of the Minions might also want to check out The Secret Life of Pets, as there’s a new Minions short film called Mower Minions that will be played exclusively before it.

How Despicable The co-director, Chris Renaud, is responsible for the superb Despicable Me films, and the same sense of humour and style runs through The Secret Life of Pets – which you'll get if you've seen any of the trailers. A fun film from start to finish.

TRAILER TRAWL The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 Max was a perfectly happy dog, until his owner brought home another dog to live with them – Duke. 2 And things for Max go from bad to worse when the pair are mistaken for stray dogs. 3 Things improve when Snowball busts them out… 4 …and takes them to ‘safety’ in his underground base.

Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel), leader of the humans, and Durotan (Toby Kebbell), leader of the Orcs, are then sent on a collision course that will decide the fate of their families, their people and their home. Films based on video games have had a chequered past to say the least (check out our feature from issue three for more info), but with Warcraft and the forthcoming Assassin's Creed, which stars Michael Fassbender, we have every belief that the tide is finally turning.

FILM FACTS Warcraft was initially down for a December 2015 release. Obviously another big film was released that month (can you guess which one?), so Warcraft was pushed back. An Orcish dialect was created specifically for the movie.

Soon they find themselves on a tortuous journey through Paris to a safe house in the Swiss Alps and, with the might of the Russian Mafia closing in, begin to realise this particular match has the highest stakes of all…

Money Monster is a tense three-hander, with Clooney and Roberts (appearing together for the fourth time) on top form, and the brilliant Jack O'Connell (who was so impressive in '71) almost steals the show as the man driven to despair. A smart, tense thriller that keeps you hooked until the very end.

the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction once again.

FILM FACTS The budget for this sequel was a whopping $200,000,000 – which was $125,000,000 more than the first film! Will Smith was originally scripted to appear, but apparently his fee of $50 million for two films was a little rich.

Hamlet has the world at his feet, as he’s young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then his world shatters when word reaches him that his father is dead. Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona, 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of The Audience – featuring Helen Mirren’s awardwinning performance as Queen Elizabeth II – returns to cinemas in celebration of the monarch’s 90th birthday. For 60 years, the Queen has met with each of her 12 Prime Ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. No one knows what they discuss, not even their spouses. Written by Peter Morgan (The Queen) and directed by two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours), these special encore screenings include an exclusive Q&A with Helen Mirren and director Stephen Daldry.

Based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of the poet Werther’s hopeless love for Charlotte, who is committed to another man. The music is packed full of lyrical beauty, passion and emotional fervour – there is no wonder that Werther is often considered to be the composer’s finest work. The Royal Opera’s Music Director Antonio Pappano returns to conduct film, theatre and opera director Benoît Jacquot’s classic production. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigòlo is perfectly cast as Werther, alongside Joyce DiDonato, who sings her first Charlotte (one of the great French mezzo roles) in this staging.

COMMUNITYNEWS IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE

N

ow open for business, we recently had the chance to take a closer look around The Square soft play centre – which is to be found in the old EMI building on Priory Road – and are happy to report that it looks amazing. More than just a soft play centre though, The Square serves a fine cup of coffee and has a wide range of healthy and tasty food options at reasonable prices. It’s the ideal place to meet up with other parents with young kids, as you can relax and grab something to eat or drink, safe in the knowledge that your kids are having a brilliant time! The Square is made up of two areas: the Toddler area for under-3s and the main area for 3-12 year olds,

and features a wide selection of things to climb over, through and under. And it’s also the ideal place to book out if you have a kids’ birthday coming up, as you can just roll up, let the kids go crazy and let Steve and his staff do all the hard work for you! “I simply wanted to create the sort of soft play centre that I’d love to visit with my own son,” says Steve. “I’ve lived in Wells for over a decade and you may know me from my time at The King’s Head on the High Street.” But don’t just take our word for it. The Square’s Facebook page is already proving very popular, and after being open for just a couple of weeks, they’ve already got around 30 glowing reviews from very satisfied customers.

UNMISSABLE OUTLINES EXHIBITION AT THE HERITAGE COURTYARD STUDIOS

T

he Heritage Courtyard Studios in Wells, which is owned by co-curator Heather Jane Wallace, is proud to announce OutLines, an exhibition running from June 2-25 at 6 Heritage Courtyard in Wells. The six artists for the exhibition have been chosen because of their differing use of line. By turns spare and sensuous, the marks and surfaces on display show that drawing techniques and sensibilities have a range that we think is worth discovering. Meticulous working process connect each of our artists, and we invite the viewer to share their curiosity about drawing and to appreciate their ability to harness the drawn line to visual thinking and sensation. The featured artists include Anne Bourbeau, Vanessa Clegg, Esme Clutterbuck, Debbie Locke, Tony Martin and Jilly Morris.

A

s sure as night follows day, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before a LEGO Star Wars game showed up based on the new film, and this month it’s finally here. Luckily for Star Wars fan though, it’s a bit of a gem. Primarily, the action follows the plot of the film (as you would expect), but there are also extra scenes in the game that didn’t make it into the film, helping to flesh out the characters like never before. There’s also a brand-new ‘Multi-Builds’ feature that allows you to use any available LEGO bricks in the game to open up new paths. Then, when you’ve done that, you can reuse the bricks to open up different hidden areas – creating a gameplay area much larger than you would expect.

GYMS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE YOUNG!

…or why you don’t have to put up with your aches and pains

A

s a person ages, muscles become shorter and lose their elasticity, bones start to lose their density and your metabolism slows down. The effect of these unfortunate facts of life usually results in us slowing down over time, which can also contribute to your core strength ebbing away, and may cause aches and pains and a loss of balance. The good news is that although we can’t stop the ageing process altogether, we can slow it down. There are many benefits with exercise, and at Perfect Fit in Wells we can design a programme specifically for you. Here are a few examples of the types of training you can do in the gym or at home:

Weight/Resistance Training You are never too old to start weight training! This type of exercise, when done correctly, will improve bone density, slowing down the process of osteoporosis. This happens by strengthening the muscles and ligaments, and the force applied to the bones creates a restorative response. It can also help improve co-ordination and self-awareness.

Flexibility and Mobility Joint problems and tight muscles can improve from regular exercise and stretching. Stretching helps to improve blood circulation and also lengthens the

muscles, too. Doing this by yourself or in a class can also help provide a feeling of general wellbeing.

KING KONG

RELEASED: 1933  DIRECTORS: Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack  STARRING: Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot, Frank Reicher Setting the scene… Wildlife filmmaker Carl Denham, while filming in an exotic location, stumbles upon the giant ape Kong and brings him back to New York to make money from him as an exhibition. Unfortunately for the New Yorkers though, Kong escapes and, after picking up his sweetheart, Ann Darrow, climbs up the Empire State Building to his eventual doom…

CLASSIC MOVIE MOMENTS

Did you know? The classic scene of Kong on top of the Empire State Building was the first image director Merian C. Cooper had for the film. He then had to build up the story back from there. The model of Kong was only 18-inches tall and used a innovative metal skeleton to make the stopmotion animation more realistic. It took animators around half a day to shoot one second of film.
