The Wells Film Centre was established in 1992 by Derek Cooper. Derek has been in the cinema industry for over 30 years, and started in the old Regal cinema – just next door to the Wells Film Centre. Originally a village hall and scout hut, Derek built the cinema up from a single screen to the three state-of-the-art digital screens it now houses. In the last couple of years, Derek has passed the management of the Wells Film Centre over to his daughters Sally, Becky and Libby, who share Derek’s passion for film and will ensure that the Wells Film Centre remains a family business that the whole community can enjoy.

isen tells the story of a Roman inquiry into the reported resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Pharisees and scribes of the day told the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate, that the followers of Jesus were claiming he would rise again in three days, and so requested to have soldiers guarding his tomb, in case Jesus’ followers tried to steal the body and claim he had risen from the dead. The order was given and the soldiers were posted, but three days after the crucifixion of Jesus,

the tomb was found to be empty. Confused as to where the body could’ve gone, the Roman senate ordered a Centurion by the name of Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) to lead an investigation, which soon leads him to Mary Magdalene.
CSI Jerusalem? Clavius soon finds himself on a road of self discovery, as well as learning who Jesus was, what exactly was his mission, and why the mighty Roman Empire felt threatened. Could this one man and his followers truly bring down the Roman Empire? Is it possible Jesus’ teachings were true, and Rome felt they must be silenced? A natural successor to 2004's The Passion of the Christ, Risen is a thought-provoking and powerful tale of one of the Bible's most endearing mysteries.
FILM FACTS In the film, Tom Felton plays a character by the name of Lucius. In the Harry Potter films, this was the name of his father – a coincidence? Oddly, Joseph Fiennes next role will be in the TV movie Elizabeth, Michael and
TRAILER TRAWL The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 Jesus Christ is crucified, but promises to return from the dead after three days. 2 As a non-believer, Roman soldier Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) has Christ’s body sealed in a tomb. 3 Then, unsurprisingly, Pilate informs Clavius that Christ’s body is missing from the tomb. 4 And the Roman guards then track down the one person who knows its whereabouts: Mary Magdalene.

I6’s top assassin has a brother. Sadly for him, he’s an idiot. Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen) has everything a man could want, but there’s one thing missing in his life: his little brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong). After they were adopted by different families, Nobby spent 28 years searching for his brother. After he finds out where he is, Nobby sets off to reunite with his brother, unaware that Sebastian has just uncovered a plot that puts the world in danger. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realises that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot. Sacha Baron Cohen is the master of creating unique and controversial characters, and if initial reports are to be believed, the same will be true with The Brothers Grimsby, as it aims to be hilarious and shocking in equal measure.
FILMFACTS In the film Sacha Baron Cohen’s character calls Scott Adkins’ one ‘Ukrainian Ben Affleck’. Ironically, Adkins auditioned for the role of Batman that went to Ben Affleck. No actual shots were filmed in Grimsby itself, as the council declined them permission to film there.

ddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is Capitol Pictures’ head of physical production in 1950’s Hollywood and, most importantly, the studio fixer. His job is to maintain the clean reputation of the company and its stars, keeping them free from controversy. But when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of Capital’s latest production, Hail Caesar, a Tale of Christ’s Life, is kidnapped and a ransom of $100,000 is demanded for his safe return, a chain of hilarious events spiral to push Mannix to the very limits of his abilities. Hail Caesar! is the latest film from writers/ directors Ethan and Joel Coen, and has already gathered a lot of praise from the preview screenings. It features a stunning all-star cast and the razor-sharp writing talents that have made the brothers one of the most interesting and watchable moviemaking teams in Hollywood.
FILMFACTS This film reunites Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown for the first time since Highlander in 1986. The made-up company ‘Capitol Pictures’ also appears in Barton Fink – another Coen brothers film.

Unfortunately for them, their peace is soon shattered with the arrival of Harry (Ralph Fiennes) a loud and energetic record producer and old flame of Marianne’s. Harry’s brought his daugher along, who soon makes it apparent that she has designs on Paul, while Harry himself is keen to rekindle the flames between himself and Marianne. A Bigger Splash is a remake of the classic French film from the Sixties, La Piscine. The story itself bounds along at a rapid pace, but it may well be a film that becomes better known over time for Ralph Fiennes’ incredible dance routine!
FILM FACTS Director Luca Guadagnino enjoyed working with the cast so much that he’s signed them up to star in his next film, Suspiria. Tilda Swinton says the character of Marianne is a mixture of David Bowie, Chrissie Hynde and P.J. Harvey.

While Superman and Batman are battling it out though, Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) takes the opportunity to create a little mayhem of his own and unleashes a new threat that could end up destroying both Metropolis and the entire world. Luckily, the boys get some help from a very unlikely and unexpected source…

Zip forward 16 years though, and that’s exactly what we’ve got. And the good news is that fans of the original will find it just as funny and touching as the first film. Most of that is down to the fact that Nia Vardalos (who also stars as Toula Miller) is back on writing duties. The sequel focuses on Toula’s teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), who, like her mother before her, discovers that growing up in a Greek family can be difficult. And when the family find out that Toula's parents aren't officially married, the stage is set for yet another Big Fat Greek Wedding.
FILM FACTS Despite there being 14 years between the original film and the sequel, most of the cast and crew of the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding have returned. Nia Vardalos and John Corbett also appeared together in 2009’s I Hate Valentine’s Day.

A LITTLE CHAOS 12A
As a tribute to the late actor Alan Rickman, who sadly passed away earlier this year, we’re screening his 2014 film A Little Chaos, which he both starred in and directed. The movie is a romantic drama that follows Sabine (Kate Winslet), a talented landscape designer, who is building a garden at Versailles for King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman). Sabine struggles with class barriers as she becomes romantically entangled with the court’s renowned landscape artist, André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts). The film will be introduced by the renowned conductor Charles Hazlewood, who was a friend of Rickman’s. BLADE RUNNER 2: THE LATEST
The most hotly anticipated sequel since The Force Awakens gets a release date
T
he much-anticipated sequel to the cult classic Blade Runner has now got a release date, and will be hitting cinemas in January of 2018. Blade Runner 2 (a working title) will begin filming in July this year, and stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role and, thankfully, the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, the original Blade Runner – an assassin hired to terminate the replicants. As you’d expect, details are a bit thin on the ground, but we do know that the first two acts of the film will centre around a hunt for Deckard, who’s missing and suspected to be dead – if you remember from the first Blade Runner film, it was

always unclear whether Deckard was the final replicant himself. Harrison Ford claimed last year that it was the best script he’d ever read (and he’s read quite a few!), and fans will be reassured to hear that Hampton Fancher, the screenwriter of the original Blade Runner, is back to co-write this one. Hopes are raised even higher when you read the list of talent working on it. In the director’s chair you have the brilliant Denis Villeneuve, who’s recently given us two dark gems in Prisoners and Sicario, and the legendary Roger Deakins will be the cinematographer, meaning that it’s almost

guaranteed to look incredible. All of this will be watched over by Ridley Scott’s sharp gaze, ensuring that the feel and style of the original comes through – despite there being a whopping 36 years since the first Blade Runner film was released. Like most people, we were unsure about a sequel to such a classic film. Everything was wrapped up neatly at the end of the first one, and it wasn’t one that was crying out for a continuation of the story, but we take a lot of comfort from seeing the talent picked to produce it, and the clear love and respect they have for the source material. We’re keeping everything crossed that Deckard’s return to the big screen will be a triumphant one.
There’s a new Predator film coming, and it’s being directed by Shane (Iron Man 3) Black, who appeared in the very first Predator movie as Hawkins. “It’s an inventive sequel,” says Black. “Why start over when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?”
Classic Eighties movie Highlander is heading for a reboot, with Dave Bautista signed up for the part of The Kurgan and Tom Cruise rumoured to be interested in playing Ramirez – the Sean Connery role in the original.

RISING STAR
JOHN BOYEGA
He’s the hero of Star Wars, but how much do you know about the man who plays the Stormtrooper-turned-good, Finn?
J
ohn Boyega hit the big time when he was cast in the lead for the excellent British sci-fi horror film, Attack the Block. Moody and introverted, his on-screen presence was one that made you take notice. Although he also auditioned for the part of Eggsy in The Kingsman and got down to the final three, it was when he was cast as Finn in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens that the world finally took notice of him. While all the new young leads have proven themselves to be more of a match for the Star Wars old guard, it was Boyega in particular who comes across as a major star of the future. Whether he’s bantering with Han Solo or thrust into a lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren, he’s proven that he can handle light moments just as well as the darker ones.
Obviously he’s got another two Star Wars films to think about (filming has already begun on Episode VIII) but Boyega can also be seen this year in The Circle, which co-stars Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and Karen Gillan.
STAR TRIVIA John’s parents are from Nigeria, and his father is a Pentecostal preacher. His first acting role was in Becoming Human in 2011, which was a spin-off show from the excellent Being Human.

LEO FINALLY WINS HIS OSCAR!
The new Mary Poppins movie might have found a practically perfect actor to play the lead part, as Disney are keen for Emily Blunt to play Mary. The film, which is apparently set 20 years after the original, will be directed by Into the Woods’ Rob Marshall.
DiCaprio walks away with the Best Actor award
T
he Oscars ceremony happened just as we were going to print, so we’ve just enough space to feature the main winners, and there were few surprises in the list: Best Actor – Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) Best Actress – Brie Larson (Room) Best Picture – Spotlight Best Director – Alejandro González Iñárritu Best Supporting Actor – Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) Best Supporting Actress – Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
CLINT EASTWOOD
Famed director Darren Aronofsky wanted to make a Batman film starring Clint. The perfect Batman maybe, but not at 70 years old, surely?
JOHNNY DEPP
After directing two Batman films, Tim Burton stayed on as a producer and suggested that Depp would be perfect for the Caped Crusader.
Johnny Depp will appear in a new version of the classic H.G. Wells horror story, The Invisible Man, the story of a renowned scientist who develops a formula to make him invisible. Unfortunately, one of the side effects is that it also drives you insane.
BILL MURRAY
Incredibly, Murray was a hot tip to play Batman after Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman was linked to a film in the early 1980s. March 2016

s you surely must already know by now, a chunk of The Huntsman: Winter’s War was filmed in Wells last summer – about 15 minutes worth if what we’ve heard is true. The Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace doubled up nicely for Ravenna’s castle, and although the evil queen (Charlize Theron) was killed in the first Huntsman film, she’s back from the dead, twice as powerful and determined to rule the land. Luckily there are a few people standing in her way – her sister Freya (Emily Blunt) and the Huntsman himself (Chris Hemsworth), and it’s only by the combined effort of all of them that Ravenna will be destroyed. For a once-in-a-lifetime moviegoing experience, don’t forget that we’re showing a very special gala performance of The Huntsman: Winter’s War in the Bishop’s Palace on Friday, April 22 as part of the Wells Film Festival. onsidering that it’s been 49 years since the original Walt Disney version of The Jungle Book was released, is young Mowgli still the king of the swingers? Or is he now less of a jungle VIP? The main difference between this and the original adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s book is of course that this is a live-action version, with the very latest computer technology employed to create a film that blurs the boundary between real-life and CGI like no other. In fact, despite it being classed as a live-action film, the only real thing in the entire film is actor Neel Sethi, who plays Mowgli. Everything else was filmed in a studio while Neel acts to a green screen. While there are two Jungle Book movies in production (Andy Serkis is directing the other one, called Jungle Book: Origins, which will be released in October 2017), Jon Favreau is the first one to get his finished and out there. “The process is so technical,” said Favreau recently. “It’s so difficult from anything I’ve done, and quite different from anything anyone’s done before.”

Forced to fight as a gladiator and kill one of his friends, Spartacus plots an unprecedented uprising. Grigorovich’s Spartacus was created at the Bolshoi in 1968, and has remained the Russian company’s signature ballet. This most spectacular production is an epic tour de force, giving full expression to the strength for which the Bolshoi’s male dancers are renowned. Principal dancer Mikhail Lobukhin is stunning in the role of the legendary gladiator, alongside Svetlana Zakharova as Aegina.
BORIS GODUNOV STARRING Bryn Terfel, Vlada Borovko CERT 12A RELEASE 21st Mar (7.15pm) LENGTH 180 minutes Boris Godunov’s complex route to the stage resulted in Musorgsky completing two quite different versions. Pushkin’s Shakespeare-inspired play about the 16th-century tsar, on which the opera was based, had only been cleared by the censors for performance in 1866. It was suggested to Musorgsky as the ideal subject through which to explore his ideas on realism and naturalistic declamation. In 1869 the young composer submitted the finished opera to the Imperial Theatres Directorate – who rejected it, on the grounds that there were no female characters. Musorgsky revised the opera, but his 1872 version went far beyond the requirements of the Imperial Theatres and suggests the composer was writing under a whole new ideology. lthough Ubisoft’s online third-person shooter was officially revealed to much whooping and hollering from the assembled masses at the E3 show in 2013, it’s taken the developers almost three years to get it out there. It would appear that The Division is one game that’s definitely worth the wait though, as the recent online Beta smashed records by recording a whopping 6.4 million gamers during its trial – which is the highest number ever recorded for a new game series on this generation. So what’s all the fuss about? Well, The Division is set in an alternative New York City, where a smallpox pandemic has sent the country into chaos. The government collapses within five days and law and order becomes a thing of the past as factions battle for survival. As you explore the city streets looking for missions and supplies, you have the option to team up as part of a squad or, if you’d prefer, you can battle it alone – and the game’s difficulty level automatically adjusts itself to compensate, making it easier if you’re playing alone. This is a beautiful game, with all sorts of clever touches and dynamic effects, but it’s the sharp tactical gameplay that will make The Division a game you keep coming back to.
