nspired by the incredible true story surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival when a freak weather front threatens their lives.
The film's A-list cast is headed up by Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke, who play the two leaders of the expeditions, Scott Fischer and Rob Hall. The rest of the cast includes Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley and Emily Watson. Everest was filmed in 3D, and we recommend you see it in that format if possible, as the stunning vistas and jaw-dropping caverns become very real when viewed in the third dimension. Whichever format you see it in though, you're in for a cinematic treat, as Everest is a truly epic movie experience.
TRAILER TRAWL The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 The trailer begins with a dramatic shot of Mount Everest. All seems peaceful so far. 2 Two teams join at the base of the mountain to make camp and phone back to loved ones. 3 The journey to the top of the mountain goes with incident, and the teams are able to celebrate their success… 4 …until a freak storm comes in on their descent.

he may have won three Oscars in her glittering 40year career, but one thing Meryl Streep has never done before is play a rock singer. Directed by Jonathan Demme (who previously gave us, among others, The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia) and written by the brilliant Diablo (Juno) Cody, Ricki and the Flash centres on the life of Ricki Rendazzo (Streep), an ageing rocker who gave up her family to follow her dream of being a famous rock ‘n’ roller. When her daughter Julie (played by Streep’s real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer) goes through a personal

crisis, Ricki decides to put her music career on hold and return to help out her family. Ricki and the Flash is another brilliantly crafted film from Diablo Cody, and is packed full of sharp lines and brilliant scenes. Streep is clearly enjoying her work here, and if you read our quotes from her on page 28, you’ll know that she loved the regime of learning how to play rock guitar. With a rocking soundtrack (all performed by Streep and her band) and an emotionally charged storyline, Ricki and the Flash is looking like being another winner for the world’s best-known actress.
September 2015
FILMFACTS Meryl Streep’s on-screen daughter, Mamie Gummer, is actually her daughter in real life. Writer Diablo Cody (who’s better-known for writing the brilliant film Juno) based Ricki on her mother-in-law, who’s been playing in bands for years.

Nine years ago they discovered a dead body together but now, at their Central Florida high school, Q’s a nerd while Margo is uber-cool. One night, before graduating, Q is basking in the predictable dullness of his life when Margo persuades him to join her in some midnight mayhem and vengeance… and then vanishes. While her family shrugs off this latest disappearance, Q follows Margo’s string of elaborate clues – including
an unnerving poem about death. Q’s friends Radar, Ben and Lacey help with the search, and then a surprising post from a website turns up: Margo will be in a certain location for the next 24 hours only. They immediately head off, driving through the night and racing against the clock. Will Q get to Margo in time? And will she even be there when they reach the location? he pupils of Abbey Grove school have finished their GCSEs and, to go out in style, their teacher Alfie Wickers (Jack Whitehall) has promised the whole class a holiday in Cornwall. Of course, as the pupils' parents are concerned, the trip will be an educational one, but in reality, all Alfie wants to do is go on an almighty pub crawl which would end at a house party of one of his former class mates. Naturally, things go spectacularly badly, with a SWAT team dispatched to the Eden Project and Cornish Nationalists staging a full-on riot! Fans of the massively popular TV show will find a lot to love here, as writers Freddie Syborn and Jack Whitehall have taken the outrageous humour of the series and ramped it up to bring you a hilarious and original film that'll will keep you laughing from the first frame to the last.
FILMFACTS You might think this is the first film role for British comedian Jack Whitehall, but he actually had a smaller uncredited part in Frozen. Harry Enfield, another top British comedy star, plays Jack’s father in the film, Martin Wickers.

o-one suspects that underneath his drop-out exterior there’s actually more lurking beneath Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg). The truth is that he’s actually a highly trained lethal sleeper agent – with ‘sleeper’ being the operative word here. Mike lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart) and seemingly has no knowledge of his violent past. As his previously life comes back to haunt him though, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly government operation and is forced to summon his inner action hero in order to survive! Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis teams with Project X director Nima Nourizadeh for this past-paced action comedy. Eisenberg is once again hilarious as the lead character, and the remaining cast – which includes Topher Grace, John Leguizamo and Bill Pullman – support him brilliantly throughout the film.
FILMFACTS Writer Max Landis, the son of director John Landis, also penned Chronicle and the forthcoming Victor Frankenstein. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart previously co-starred in the indie hit, Adventureland.

n this next chapter of the epic Maze Runner saga, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organisation known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all. Based on the young-adult books by James Dashner, The Scorch Trials is the second film of the trilogy of

stories. Taking the Gladers out of the maze of the first film, they’re now placed in a terrifying post-apocalyptic world in a new fight for survival. The key to the film – aside from its original and powerful storyline – is its excellent young cast. Headed up once again by Dylan O’Brien as the leader of the Gladers, Thomas, he’s rejoined by Kaya Scodelario as Teresa, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt and Ki Hong Lee as Minho. September is another excellent month for film, and especially for a teenage audience, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is easily one of the highlights.

FILMFACTS To make sure that fans of the book series will still get the odd surprise or two, director Wes Ball has confirmed that The Scorch Trials film will be slightly different from the source novel. Thomas Brodie-Sangster is known in the UK for starring in Love Actually and Nanny McPhee.

n 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels – armed only with their lyrics and raw talent – stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their
voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today. Music biopics are nothing knew, but Straight Outta Compton not only deals with the rise and fall of one of America's most beloved rap bands but also highlights the social unrest at the time – something that's unfortunately echoed down through the years, making Straight Outta Compton's message as relevant today as it was nearly 30 years ago. It's the music that shines through though, and amazingly the songs still feel as fresh and important today as they were when N.W.A released their first album in 1988. September 2015
FILMFACTS All five members of N.W.A were from Compton, a poor area of Los Angeles that became renowned for gang warfare in the 80s and 90s. Among the bands members were Ice Cube (who’s now a famous movie star himself) and producer Dr. Dre, who went on to launch the Beats range of headphones.

STARRING: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke, Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon, Connie Britton DIRECTOR: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon RUN TIME: 105 minutes
O
n the face of it, the premise of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a slightly depressing one. Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) is a high school senior and a bit of a loner. His only real friend is Earl Jackson (RJ Cyler), and the pair spend most of their free time making films together. Greg's parents decide that he needs to expand his circle of friends though, and suggest that he rekindles his friendship with Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a childhood friend that's recently been diagnosed with leukaemia. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl could easily be mawkish and
14
widescreen
overly sentimental, but the reality is that it’s far from that. Rather than concentrate on Rachel’s illness, the film is actually a beautiful example of teenage life. It’s both funny and heartfelt, and rather than feel sorry for Rachel, you quickly fall in love with the characters and their growing relationship. Based on the debut novel of the same name by Jesse Andrews, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl has obvious shades of The Fault in Our Stars, and fans of that book and film will find a lot to like here, but this is a movie that also manages to stamp its own mark on the film world, too.

hen you think about who the perfect actor would be to play the duel roles of notorious 1960's gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, we would imagine that the name that leaps into most people's minds is Tom Hardy. Luckily for us then, the producers of Legend, the biopic that charts the rise and fall of the twins, had the same idea. Based on the excellent book The Profession of Violence, Legend focuses on the life of Reggie Kray, the older of the twins, as he tries to juggle married life, their rising criminal empire and also the psychotic tendencies of his brother, Ronnie.
Legend has been written and directed by Brian Helgeland, who's no stranger to crime fiction. In 1997 he wrote the brilliant L.A. Confidential and went on to write the screenplays for films such as Mystic River, Man on Fire and 42. The star of the show though has to be Tom Hardy. Despite their obvious physical similarities, the personalities of the twins couldn't be more different. While both have a quest for power, Reggie's desire for balance in his life and married bliss was sharply at odds with Ronnie's violent ways, and Hardy plays both roles to perfection. September 2015
FILMFACTS The Kray twins were born in 1933 in East London, and during the 1950s and 60s they rose in power to become the kingpins of organised crime in the whole of London with their gang ‘The Firm’. Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1969, Ronnie died in 1995 and Reggie passed away five years later.

uring a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm forces the rest of his crew to abandon the mission and accidentally leave him behind on the planet. The crew believed that Watney died during the storm but the reality was that he survived, only to then find himself stranded on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity and spirit to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of scientists work tirelessly to

bring him home, while at the same time his crewmates plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, The Martian is the second recent film starring Matt Damon as an abandoned astronaut (Interstellar being the other one), but this is a very different movie to Christopher Nolan’s epic tale of humanity’s race for survival. A tense and dramatic plot and some stunning performances from Damon himself, as well as Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig, means that The Martian is a thriller that will keep you on the edges of your seats.

FEATUREBOND FACTS
SPY HARD
The 24th James Bond film in the series, Spectre, is released next month, and to celebrate the fact, we thought we would raid the MI6 vaults to bring you a list of Bond-related facts you probably don’t know. 18
widescreen
September 2015
1 CLINT SAID NO It’s hard to imagine an American playing a very British spy, but when Sean Connery left the role of Bond the series’ producers were very keen for Clint Eastwood to play the part. Obviously he turned the job down – for the reason that he thought Bond shouldn’t be played by an American, but it’s interesting to imagine what Eastwood would have brought to the role. Eastwood wasn’t the first (or the last) actor not interested in the job though, as other actors who’ve turned down the chance to play Bond include Hugh Jackman, Cary Grant, Liam Neeson and Burt Reynolds – like Eastwood, Reynolds also believed that an American wasn’t right for the part.
2 A VERY DULL NAME You may think that the name ‘James Bond’ was plucked from thin air, but Ian Fleming actually had inspiration when it came to naming his all-action hero. When he was writing the first Bond story, he wanted Bond to be an extremely dull and uninteresting man to whom things happened. One of Fleming’s favourite books as a child was Birds of the West Indies, and its writer? Yep, one James Bond. “I thought, my god, that’s the dullest name I’ve ever heard, so I appropriated it,” said Fleming in an interview.

FEATUREBOND FACTS 3 BOWIE AS MAD MAX? Although A View to a Kill is unlikely to top many people’s best Bond film list, we do happen to think that Christopher Walken was brilliantly cast as the utterly crazy Max Zorin. A surprising fact that we recently discovered though, was that Walken wasn’t the first (or even second) choice to play the part. Originally, the role of Zorin was offered to David Bowie, who turned it down, saying: “I didn’t want to spend five months watching my stunt double fall off cliffs!” Bladerunner’s Rutger Hauer was also offered the job, but thankfully it was third time lucky, as it’s hard to imagine anyone playing Zorin so perfectly as Christopher Walken did.
20
widescreen
September 2015
4 EYE SPY Goldeneye, the first Bond film to star Pierce Brosnan, was named after Ian Fleming’s house in Jamaica in which he wrote many of the Bond novels. There are a few suggestions as to where Fleming got the name from, but the most plausible one is probably that it was named after a plan he developed during his time in World War 2 working for Naval Intelligence that was a plan of action in case of a Nazi invasion. Fleming bought a large plot of land and built the house himself, after visiting the island during the War. After his death, the house was sold to Bob Marley, and then a year later to the founder of Island records, Chris Blackwell.
5 FAMILY CONNECTIONS Ian Fleming’s cousin by marriage was Christopher Lee, who you will remember was so memorable for playing the tripple-nippled baddy in The Man with the Golden Gun. Fleming initially wanted Lee to play the title role in Dr. No, but Lee turned it down. Rumour has it too, that Lee was one of Fleming’s choices to play Bond himself. The two men were connected even further though, as they also fought together during the Second World War. Although never confirmed by Lee, it’s believed he was assigned to the SAS!
6 LANGUAGE BARRIER It’s not uncommon for actors to exaggerate their skills in order to get a dream role, but in the case of Goldfinger, the agent for German actor Gert Fröbe could be accused of stretching the exaggeration a little too far, as he claimed that his client could speak perfect English. In fact, as Roger Moore wrote in his book Bond on Bond, Fröbe could only speak a couple of sentences in English. The producers were still keen on him playing the role though, and all his lines was dubbed over by an English actor by the name of Michael Collins.

FEATUREBOND FACTS 7 SAY NO TO GUNS When looking around for a new actor to play the iconic role of James Bond, there are obviously many attributes that the producers are looking for, and you’d think that Roger Moore would fit the bill perfectly on all counts. And, in fairness to Moore, he practically did. Unfortunately for him though, Moore suffered from something called hoplophobia which, believe it or not, is a fear of firearms! Ever the professional actor though, Moore went on to star in a total of seven Bond films – from Live and Let Die in 1973 to A View to a Kill in 1985 – and no-one ever realised that he suffered from the phobia.

September 2015
8 FAMILY MOTTO Shown above is the family crest and motto for the Bond family, something that’s first revealed when Bond goes undercover as a heraldry expert in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Nothing too unusual about that obviously, but when you realise the English translation of the Lain inscription is ‘The world is not enough’ then it all makes more sense. In the film of the same name (the 19th Bond film to be released), Elektra King says to Bond: “I could have given you the world. Bond’s reply? “The world is not enough.” Classy James. Very, very classy.
9 WHAT’S IN A NAME? Ever since the first Bond film, the head of the Secret Intelligence Service (and Bond’s direct boss) has always been codenamed ‘M’. Several actors have played the role but quite possible the best has been Judi Dench, who first appeared as M in Goldeneye in 1995 and lasted up to Skyfall in 2012. It was only at the end of that film though, when Bond was gifted a porcelain dog by her though that her real name was finally revealed: Olivia Mansfield. It’s believed that the real identity of M lies in the fact that, as a boy, Ian Fleming often called his mother M. She was a hard woman who constantly demanded success from her son, echoing M and Bond’s relationship perfectly.

Two actors who played James Bond during their careers, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan, could both have actually starred as the super spy much earlier in their careers. Apparently, Dalton was the first choice to replace Sean Connery when he retired from the role in 1968, but at 24 he considered himself too young to play Bond. However, if the producers had their way, it would’ve been Brosnan who played Bond in The Living Daylights, meaning Dalton would never have played Bond at all, but Brosnan was still contracted to star in the US show Remington Steele.

CAST SHOT RELEASED FOR ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Meet the gang that will bring down an Empire
W
hile the hype is now building steadily for the new Star Wars film, people are already looking to next year and the first of the Star Wars spin-off films: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. To help build on this, Lucasfilm recently released a cast shot that shows the band of Rebel spies that will star in the film. that stole the plans for the Death Star that Princess Leia passed over to R2-D2 before being captured. Led by felicity Jones in an as-yet unnamed role, sources close to the film have stated that we can expect an Dirty Dozen-style movie, as a gang of experts are brought together to pull off a seemingly impossible job. And, judging from the shot above, we can probably expect a dark and gritty tone to the film with, hopefully, less CGI than the later Star
SNIPPETS The hottest movie news, in bite-sized pieces
The hottest rumour on the movie grapevine at the time of going to press is that the writer/director of Mad Max, George Miller, is to direct the sequel to Superman: Man of Steel. Personally, we think that would be an incredible film.

2016 Wars films and more reliance on proper sets – following on from The Force Awakens. One rumour we’ve recently heard about Rogue One though, is that Grand Moff Tarkin (played by Peter Cushing) will be digitally resurrected for the film using state-ofthe-art CGI effects. As he was the driving force behind the creation of the Death Star then it seems sensible to include him. And then, of course, there’s Darth Vader, who we believe will be once again voiced by James Earl Jones.
Rapidly becoming a cult classic, the comedy vampire film What We Do in the Shadows could have a sequel. Star/writer Jemaine Clement said in a recent interview that a sequel was ‘in the planning stages’.
Disney are clearly in the remaking mood, as along with a new version of The Jungle Book, they’re also working on an update of Pete’s Dragon. The story of a runaway boy who befriends a dragon, it will star Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard.

ROCK OF AGES Multi-Oscar winning star Meryl Streep has played a variety of roles over her career, but as she explains here, picking up a guitar is a new experience for her…
On learning to play the guitar “I started learning on an acoustic guitar with a teacher in New York and then moved to the electric guitar about a month later. Then I worked pretty much every day with this genius guitar teacher. He put the Telecaster in my hands and taught me a lot of tricks that rock ‘n’ rollers use – bar chords, quick changes and stuff like that.” Explaining rocker Ricki, her character “We all have to live with our mistakes. I think she wishes that her kids liked her more and understood her. I think that is a regret, but she’s

pretty clear-eyed about it. Ricki lives in the moment – she acts on the impulse that feels imperative to her. It’s a relief to play someone who doesn’t act how everybody thinks she should be. She’s saying, ‘I can’t help being the way I am’.” On Mamie, her on-screen and real-life daughter “Mamie is very dramatic, and always has been, so we’ve been acting together for a long time. It’s tough to come into our business, with a mother who’s so prominent in Hollywood, but kids have a unique vision of their parents, which is not really to put them on a pedestal.”

BEASTLY SHOOT GETS UNDERWAY
Filming has begun on Harry Potter Spin-off
J
.K. Rowling recently announced that filming has started on the Harry Potter spin-off story, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – which was released in 1997 as a novella to raise money for Comic Relief. Set 70 years before the Harry Potter books, Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, a ‘magizoologist’, who’s on a mission to document all of the most unusual creatures in the magical world. Directed by David Yates (who directed four Harry Potter films), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released next year.
Following on from our Alien story in the last issue, we’ve since heard that the Neill Blomkamp sequel will begin filming after Ridley Scott has completed work on Prometheus 2. That means that Alien 5 (which, confusingly, is set after Alien 2) will shoot in 2017 for a release in 2018.

side from the small matter of a new Star Wars film, the movie that everyone is waiting desperately for is Spectre, the 24th Bond movie, the fourth with Daniel Craig in the lead role and, quite possibly, the last one to be directed by Sam Mendes. With a script penned by Skyfall writer John Logan, Spectre sees James Bond forced to revisit his painful past when he discovers objects relating to his childhood. Promising to reveal more about his childhood than we've ever seen before, Bond's journey leads him into the very heart of darkness as his path forces him into a dramatically and potentially fatal confrontation with the shadowy organisation known only as SPECTRE – headed up by the wonderfully evil Franz Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz).

COMBAT STRESS AND WORRY WITH THE POWER OF HYPNOTHERAPY Kirstie Salter explains how hypnotherapy can help you live life to the full

re you experiencing overwhelming, unrealistic fears or worry? Have you ever suffered a full-blown panic attack for no apparent reason? Perhaps you just feel restless and struggle to get to sleep at night? Kirstie Salter, Clinical Hypnotherapist from Mymind Solutions in Wells explains: “Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways. You may find that suddenly, for no reason, your heart starts pounding, you’re struggling to breathe, you break out in a sweat or you’re shaking. Sometimes clients know why it happened the first time but repeated attacks out of the blue have stopped them living the lives they want to. Anxiety can bring on a range of symptoms such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints and migraines.
Has
“It’s natural to feel anxious some of the time, but when we produce too much anxiety it can spiral out of control and it can be problematic. Anxiety is created from the following elements: the physical sensations you experience, the emotions you have while experiencing them, and the thoughts that go through your mind at the time.” The subconscious part of our mind stores our behaviour patterns and the triggers that can create anxiety – after all, its job is to protect us from harmful situations. And when we’re faced with life or death situations, we’re grateful for our fast physical reactions. But sometimes our subconscious can get things wrong and send off stress signals, a bit like a fire alarm under ‘false alarm’.
Mindful techniques Kirstie helps the client correct this by using hypnotherapy. Through teaching them basic and mindful relaxation techniques, and with the use of guided visualisation (hypnosis), clients are able to feel calm and in control again. While the client is in this relaxed state they are more able to visualise their preferred future, and by seeing this they become more aware of the necessary steps to achieve their desired future. This process doesn’t involve going to sleep or losing control. As David Speigel, Director for the Stanford Centre for Integrative Medicine comments, “People think hypnosis is about giving up control. But it’s actually giving control back to the patients.” To find out more, contact Kirstie Salter at Mymind Solutions on 07966 517708 or email kirstie@mymind. solutions or visit www.mymind.solutions. As a special introductory offer, Kirstie is offering customers a free initial consultation throughout the month of September.
Anxiety taken control of you? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is an effective way to treat all kinds of emotional, nervous or psychological problems. By using a combination of psychotherapy techniques and hypnosis, I help people overcome anxiety and stress related issues including:
• Anxiety • Panic attacks • Insomnia • Depression • Phobias • Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Confidence • Anger issues • Over eating • Other unwanted behaviour habits Hypnotherapy allows the client to regain control of their thoughts and behaviour patterns, leading them towards a better, brighter future.
