Open House C H I CAG O

When you’re designing somebody’s home, emotions tend to run high. Five Chicago designers open up to Editorial Director Joanna Saltz about the roller-coaster ride—and where it lets off. Tiffany Brooks @tiffany brooks interiors

Joanna Saltz: What do you want people to feel when they walk into one of your spaces? Shelley Johnstone: I’d say happy. I had one of my clients take photos of her four children jumping off a boat on vacation, in their happy place, and then I put that up on the wall in large scale. It’s not a home until it has those little details. Megan Winters: Joyful! Whether it’s the fabric on the back of the sofa or something they brought back from Paris, it needs to evoke something in the heart! Kara Mann: Comfortable. I personally love when you can put your feet up on the sofa, and dogs and cats can sleep in bed with you. People living in a space—really living in it—adds a layer.

when they come into their new spaces. Because so often, they have been waiting to design their home after a parent has passed, or their children are out of the house, or after a divorce, or after a marriage—waiting and waiting and putting off and putting off—so the fulfillment has to be beautiful and grand.

Joanna Saltz @josaltz Want to talk? E-mail me at editor@housebeautiful.com.

Tiffany Brooks: Mine is inspired. I love when my homeowners come into their home and feel refreshed and renewed. But I also want the space to be forward-thinking, so they’re inspired to do more with their home, to actually live in their home and to cultivate it. Jo: I’m fascinated by the emotional therapy of design— the ways that you help solve

Erin Shakoor: I love clients to have a sense of fulfillment

So that an avid equestrian could “be surrounded by a few of her favorite things” in a city apartment, Megan installed a life-size photograph of the client’s horse.

“I love the crazy, creative energy of working with my team.” —KARA MANN

In this dining room, Shelley paired upholstered walls with a lacquered ceiling, saying, “Dichotomy makes a space inviting.”

Tiffany: I love when a client calls me in to do a master bedroom—it’s not the space your in-laws go see, it’s not the space your guests are coming over to for a cocktail. It’s the room that’s all about you. I love when they realize they must take care of themselves by doing that space well. Kara: But people have to have their own happiness within. A chair is not going to change that. I agree that an environment is important to peoples’ well-being, but you’ve got to be realistic. Jo: Totally. Shelley: I have a lot of clients who call and say, “Thank you

so much—we’re now having friends over for dinner,” or “we’re entertaining outside!” I’m just amazed that they weren’t doing that before.

Erin: I want to say the great room, but lately it’s been master bathrooms.

Jo: What are the rooms—or even the colors—that clients get the most emotional about?

Jo: It’s a bit of a hidden jewel!

Tiffany: It’s the great room– kitchen area that really punches the gut. Not only is it functional, but your friends are going to see it. This is where your life is going to happen.

Erin Shakoor @shakoor_ interiors

Kara: A lot goes down in a master bathroom!

Tiffany: For colors, I’d say black gets people emotional. Some people say, “Oh my god, that’s so fashion-forward.” Or they find it very, very... brooding.

Kara Mann @karamanndesign

Megan: I love hot pink. But the most common reaction from men is, “You’re not going to do pink, are you?” Then I’ll usually throw back, “It’ll be your library!” That’s after I get the contract signed. Jo: Tell me about your emotional connection to your work. What are the highs? Megan: For me, it’s huge. I’m a brain cancer survivor. I shouldn’t be alive. I do believe I’m here to help create a more beautiful world for people whose lives I touch.

Erin doubled the seating in this dining nook with a banquette.

14

Shelley: Seeing them experience the home and enjoying it, that’s special!

Kara designed this room for both cocktails and piano practice.

Kara: I agree. When a really good project ends, you want to say, “Don’t leave me, you’ve been my best client ever!” So that’s a little emotional. Shelley: I married my best client. Kara: Guess he liked your work!

Platform 9¾. Invisible portals are synonymous with magic and intrigue—but they really exist! A jib door, disguised to match the wall, makes the room on the other side feel like its own secret lair. Or there are Murphy doors, which look like just another wall of bookshelves (turn the page to see one). How to Install a Jib Door

Blend It In

Magicians never reveal their tricks, but we do.

Practically speaking, a jib door is great for when “a door is needed, but visually in the way,” says designer Thomas Jayne. For this powder room by Cronk Duch Architecture, wall molding disguises the opening when it’s pivoted shut.

Give It Purpose Like jib doors, bookshelf Murphy doors are great at blending in with their surroundings (not to mention, they add storage). Pick out a style at murphy door.com; the units come with detailed instruction manuals for installation.

2. PREP THE DOORWAY A skilled carpenter can fit the opening exactly to the door so it’s flush with the wall when closed. Adding a touch-toopen spring latch will mean you don’t have to add a knob.

3. CHOOSE A DISGUISE Paint the door the same color as the wall and replicate any moldings. Or use a wallcovering; murals give a very storybook look. DESIGN BY REGAN BAKER DESIGN.

turned-designer Sarah Robertson always approaches her projects with a can-do mindset. Take this 1910 Queen Anne home in New York’s Westchester County. Originally, it held a dark and cramped kitchen. The backyard, on the other hand, was totally dreamy. So the owners reached out to Robertson, whose firm, Studio Dearborn, has specialized in kitchens for more than a decade. Working with Stoll & Stoll Architects, she moved the kitchen to the back of the house, where it looks out onto the greenery. To make the room feel expansive, they bumped up the roofline to create a wood-paneled tray ceiling and added eight windows. Robertson assigned storage to lower cabinets, drawers, and one wall. “We wanted that open connection to the backyard,” she explains, “and I like to maximize storage.” Here, everything has its place, all tucked within the cabinets Robertson designed with Schrocks of Walnut Creek, the undercabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore’s Rockport Gray. “It’s a historic house, so this color felt more right than white,” says the designer, who opted for modern hardware by Foundryman and DLV Design for “a cleaner, transitional vibe.” With a view this nice, why ever go outside?

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

24

Countertop Storage

Built-In Pantry

“We wanted to make it feel cohesive,” Robertson says of the full wall of cabinetry. Pull-down panels—complete with brass hardware by Foundryman—hide small appliances.

Snacks take up lots of space, so Robertson devised a pantry with tray shelves (which pull out so items in the far back are easily accessible) to stash all manner of dry goods.

Custom Drawers

Hidden Brilliance

Robertson designs all her cabinets with Schrocks of Walnut Creek , an Amish company in Ohio. This pull-out caddy for cooking utensils is conveniently situated beside the range.

Rather than taking up another drawer, a drying rack and cutting board are stashed between lower cabinets—they slide out easily thanks to sturdy leather pulls.

Stealing the Spotlight Lauren Buxbaum Gordon is the force behind Nate Berkus’s design firm. By Hadley Keller

L

AUREN BUXBAUM GORDON

may have started her career as a 21-year-old intern at Nate Berkus Associates, but this was no The Devil Wears Prada situation: “He really trusted me right from the start,” she says. Proof? Just weeks later, Berkus offered her a job; then, after a year and a half, she was promoted to designer and, as Gordon says, “it has not stopped since.” After nearly two decades at NBA, most recently as design director, she was named the firm’s first partner this summer. The daughter of antiques dealers, Gordon grew up browsing furniture markets, but she majored in political science before finding her way into design. “I loved going on those buying trips. That should’ve been a pretty good indicator,” she laughs. When she landed a job with Berkus, “I couldn’t believe I got to do this for my job,” she says. Aside from admiring “her eye for detail” and “unparalleled work ethic,” Berkus says he and Gordon “like to be around each other. We spend as much time laughing as we do discussing work.” Gordon and Berkus.

The No-Fear Guide To Antiquing Gordon’s best practices for finding, buying, and repurposing.

1. Don’t Take It Too Seriously For “free-spirited” clients with seven kids, Gordon paired circa-1900 gilt sconces from Maison Jansen with bold, contemporary artwork, saying, “It was such a fun, creative process.”

3. Research Before You Go Shopping When “I have the knowledge of what the price should be,” Gordon says, haggling isn’t always necessary. Two finds—a gilt mirror and brass table—perk up her former master bath.

Where to Find the Good Stuff 1. Old Plank Gordon’s parents’ shop in Chicago “carries some of the best old cabinets and commodes.”

4. Get Creative With What You Find When you “buy what you love,” Gordon says, you’ll find a purpose for it in any space. In her and her husband’s first home, for example, she used an 1800s French commode as a nightstand.

28

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

2. Pavilion Antiques & 20th C This Chicago spot is “the first antique store Nate introduced me to,” she says, and it’s her go-to for modern pieces. 3. Serge Castella “When I’m looking for extra-special vintage,” she shops this dealer in Girona, Spain, online.

PHOTOGRAPHERS, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: FRED GERLICH; HEATHER TALBERT (2)

2. Go Picking Off the Beaten Path “I find things to buy everywhere I go,” Gordon says. “The pawn shop, the trading post. The more obscure and weird, the better.”

Sleepover at John Robshaw’s An A-list textile designer transformed a ramshackle barn into the ultimate weekend hangout.

STYLIST: SARA RODRIGUES

“I had the walls and floors stained dark as a backdrop for all the bright textiles I knew I’d be using,” says Robshaw. Bookcases: custom-designed by Colby Wong. Sleeper sofa and chairs: John Robshaw for Duralee. Table lamps: vintage from Montage Antiques.

BEFORE: The former tobacco barn, which had been added to the main house after it was built, lacked heat and plumbing.

A

T F I R S T, T H E Y

ignored it. “When I bought the house, it was sort of just there,” says textile designer John Robshaw of the old barn a former owner had attached to the side of his 1840s farmhouse in Sharon, Connecticut. “I was using it as a print studio.” He and his wife, Rachel, finished a gut renovation of the main house before realizing their mistake. “I had guests coming over, and I didn’t have a bathroom downstairs— which my mother kept complaining about,” Robshaw recalls. So, with the help of architect Colby Wong and decorator Sara Bengur, Robshaw set about transforming the single-floor barn into what he describes as a

“library, loungey, everything living space.” After wiring for electricity

and heat, it was filled with pieces from his showrooms (like a pair of bookcases inspired by an Istanbul mosque) and extensive travels (he goes to India at least twice a year), and, of course, plenty of one-of-a-kind textiles. “It’s always fun looking through my warehouse’s excess fabrics—dye lots might be off or we made too much—and seeing what works,” Robshaw says. The added sleeper sofa, powder room, and outdoor shower made it visitor-ready: “My parents can get to this easier than the main house’s upstairs bathrooms—plus, everyone needs an outdoor shower in the country!”

Gonna Make You Sweat Home saunas have never been hotter. By Hadley Mendelsohn

T

H E F I N N S C R E AT E D

the first sauna some 2,000 years ago for bathing and staying warm during bitter winters. Fast-forward to the present: Technology has evolved, wellness is all the rage, and the rest of the world has (rightly) caught on. Today’s saunas are high-heat, vented rooms for relaxing and perspiring. They’ve become increasingly popular in home design—“and not just because it feels great to sweat it out,” says California-based designer Alison Pickart. A 2018 study published by Mayo Clinic found that sauna bathing produces the same physiological responses as moderate exercise, and can reduce hypertension risk, stress, and other chronic illnesses. So what’s the catch? None, thanks to a world of heating and design options: Installing a sauna is easier than adding a new shower, since no plumbing is required (you just need a heater). Here’s what you need to know to have one at home.

Cedar is a popular wood for saunas because it smells so good when heated.

Room for Two Applied Studio squeezed this two-person unit into a garden after the homeowners traveled to Europe and got hooked on sauna bathing.

Change the Mood Studio Griffiths gave this wooden paneling an inky stain, and then back-lit the walls for added drama. Heat-resistant lights are a sauna essential.

3 Things to Consider Before Getting a Sauna A cheat sheet for smoother planning and installation.

2. Heating To heat your sauna to between 150° F and 195° F, the recommended temperature zone for getting health benefits, use a stone-and-coal heater (the traditional Finnish way), a gas

or electric unit (more common in the U.S. today), or infrared heat (typically the most expensive, this heats only your body and not the whole room). Installing a carbon monoxide detector is also a good idea. 3. Material Wood is traditional for sauna design because it doesn’t retain heat like tile (so you can sit on it!), and while cedar is the go-to choice, Pickart also recommends hemlock, pine, and eucalyptus. Or, to help with respiratory issues, use saltstone on the walls.

Place It Strategically In this master bathroom by Blackband Design, a glass door on the sauna lets in additional light. Installing yours near a shower makes it easy to rinse off afterward.

Take It Outside Freestanding saunas can be more affordable than in-home models because they don’t require as much ventilation. They’re also easier to install: This Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 2 sauna from Jacuzzi takes 90 minutes to set up!

1. Location Turns out, you don’t need a ton of room: “A sauna can be as small as a 5' x 5' walk-in closet,” says Stephen Straughan of KAA Design. Even interior spaces will work, since ventilation can usually be run through the walls. Definitely add an exhaust fan, key to keeping mold at bay.

Reclaim Your Dining Room You should be spending more time in here. By Eddie Ross

huge house, every space needs to be extra-useful. Our dining room? Not just for special occasions. We designed it to make everyday entertaining a little easier, switching out a wood buffet top for lowmaintenance marble and reupholstering chairs in stain-resistant velvet. Because I love collecting china, I kept the color palette of my favorite pieces in mind while choosing the wall paint color—C2 Paint’s Brown Eyed Girl—and textiles. That way, even if I have to throw together a table setting in a hurry, it’ll coordinate beautifully. Just add flowers and serve dinner. Done.

homes—but what if your home could do more for you? If it could draw you in, activate all your senses, make you feel happier from the moment you open the door? Welcome to House Beautiful’s Whole Home Concept House, our 6,201-square-foot haven in Nashville that we built with Castle Homes and Wellness Within Your Walls. The idea was simple: Ask 14 designers from around the country to create spaces in which every design element has a purpose, and every room evokes a feeling. The result is more than a home—it’s an experience that brings you joy, energy, calm, and focus. And it will help you understand how to make your own home work harder, better, and more beautifully than it ever has.

1. The Foyer & Living Room • BY VERN YIP Walk into your home, and you should feel instantly at ease. That’s why Vern Yip, the Atlanta-based designer and television personality who tackled the entry and living room, focused on livability as much as looks: “Nobody wants to live in a museum where everything is so precious,” he says. “We don’t live like that today.” The two-story foyer was wrapped in a dragon-themed wallpaper, but he paired it with a quieter—and wipeable—vinyl shagreen in the living room next door. A supersize 15-foot sectional features a chaise on both ends, and is covered in one of Yip’s fabrics that can withstand boisterous children, wine-slinging adults, and playful pets. “I’ve literally taken a black Sharpie to this fabric. You can remove anything from it,” he says. Even the entry table, console, and coffee tables, done in a patented finish, are party-ready: “You don’t need coasters!” says Yip. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Furniture, wallcoverings, and fabrics: Fabricut. Tables: Aronson Woodworks. Accessories: Oly. Art: Jackson Fine Art. Rugs: Milliken.

It’s Three Tables in One! After multiple sketches, Chenault and Ed James created a dining-table base called Boomerang that can be adjusted to coffee-table height, and separated into two square tables instead of one. A removable custom ping-pong net makes the room the most versatile ever.

2. The Dining Room • BY CHENAULT JAMES Other than on holidays, a traditional dining room doesn’t see a lot of action, which is why Kentucky-based designer Chenault James reinvented the concept. Her husband, Ed, of Four Board Woodworks, crafted a shape-shifting table with three distinct uses. “I wanted a table that could function for dining and ping-pong, but also convert to separate coffee tables,” says James. “It was a big ask!” The leather net pops on when it’s game time, and the table can divide into two for card games—or cocktails, thanks to a well-stocked vintage bar cabinet. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Wallpaper: Trustworth Studios. Curtain fabrics: Schumacher. Table: Four Board Woodworks. Chairs: Bunakara. Settees: Chairish, in Ferrick Mason fabric. 3. The Kitchen • BY MATTHEW QUINN When dreaming up a new kitchen, it’s tempting to focus on the “pretty bits”: cabinet colors, quartz versus natural stone surfaces, hardware finishes. But kitchen-andbath expert Matthew Quinn starts with what’s practical. “I obsess over saving people time—because time equals luxury,” he says. “In this kitchen, I focused on saving steps: from the garage to the fridge, from the dishwasher to the cabinet. It all adds up.” An easy-clean quartz countertop is paired with a wood surface that has a charging pad built right in (meaning no tangled cords ruining your clean kitchen). Even the right appliances can save you time: “If you have a refrigerator that really preserves your food,” he points out, “you’ll make fewer runs to the grocery store.” Left: Lighting: Circa Lighting. Hood: Francois & Co. Cabinets: Downsview Kitchens. Hardware: Rocky Mountain Hardware. Fixtures: Kohler and Kallista. Countertops: Caesarstone (quartz) and Grothouse (wood). Paint: Benjamin Moore. Stools: Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Window treatments: Thibaut. Pantry, below: Mesh: Architectural Grille. Microwave drawer: Signature Kitchen Suite. Tile: AKDO. All accessories: Williams Sonoma.

The Details 1. The 18" wine column by Signature Kitchen Suite has two zones, so favorite bottles will keep at the perfect sipping temperature. 2. 4. The Master Bedroom BY JACKSON PAIGE INTERIORS “This is the parents’ retreat, a place to pull the curtains and read, meditate, or hide from the kids!” says designer Kristine Paige Kamenstein of the master bedroom. Her goal, accordingly, was to evoke a restorative feeling: that of lying in the grass and watching the clouds go by. Sunny yellow accents are grounded by a wallcovering that depicts cranes in flight (“ Who wouldn’t want to wake up in the clouds?” she points out) in a sophisticated gray scale. And a built-in window seat—complete with floor-to-ceiling drapery panels for aforementioned hiding—frames a private view into the backyard. Wallcovering: Phillip Jeffries. Bed: Lee Industries. Bedding: Matouk. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Rug: Woven. Tables: Serena & Lily. Window trim: Samuel & Sons. Window seat: G&P Custom Cabinets. Mattress: Stearns & Foster.

5. The Master Bathroom BY RICHARD ANUSZKIEWICZ Your first stop in the morning and the last before bed, a master bath should be a place of rejuvenation— ideally one where you don’t have to think. So for this corridor-turned-spa, kitchen-and-bath designer Richard Anuszkiewicz installed a programmable 12-piece showerhead, rainfall, and body jet system (featuring Bluetooth-enabled music) to snap you to attention in the morning or help you wind down after a workout. “There’s no need for the spa,” he says. “Everything in here is light and bright, so it immediately feels relaxing.” Plenty of storage reduces clutter, and therefore stress: On either side of the air jet–equipped tub are matching campaign vanities, each with an abundance of drawers to keep the counters clear. Fixtures: Kohler. Countertops: Caesarstone. Tile: Traditions in Tile and Stone. Hardware: Matthew Quinn Collection. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Cabinetry: Downsview Kitchens. Mirrors: Architectural Grille. Curtain fabric: Thibaut.

6. The Media Room • BY MODERN REMAINS In most homes, movie night is the most important night of the week—which makes a media room one of the most important in the house. But “a media room doesn’t have to focus solely on the television,” says Lauren Moore of Nashville-based trio Modern Remains. “We wanted to design a space where you can tuck away with a book, gather with the family, or have movie night.” A platform fits two back-to-back chaises, so their occupants can see over the leather sofa that’s housed in a custom wood surround. Floor-to-ceiling drapery panels can be shut during showtime or opened for less intimate affairs. And just outside, a cozy stair landing serves as an additional hangout space. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Sofa: Stressless. Sofa surround: Reinhardt Restoration. Bookcase: Five String Furniture. Paint: Benjamin Moore. Chaises: Design Industry by Grant Trick. Art: William McLure, Jack Spencer.

Mosaic Magic A woodland scene—The Glade by New Ravenna—brings unexpected playfulness to the shower.

7. The Kids’ Rooms BY AMY BERRY Children are drawn to places where their imaginations can run wild; their bedrooms should be no exception. Dallas-based designer Amy Berry had this in mind when she wrapped the boy’s room in a mural of the Virginia countryside, and the girl’s in a French blue toile. “I thought of it as: How will they remember this when they grow up?” A traditionalist at heart, Berry went for classic motifs with staying power: “I imagined the sister as being older than her brother, so I wanted her room to be more sophisticated: a chaise for reading, a secretary for working, and a great bed,” says Berry. The boy’s room features less precious pieces—and fewer of them, so there is room to play. Above: Wallpaper: Mural Sources. Rug: Dash & Albert. Bed: Amy Berry Home with Fermoie fabric. Bedding: Pine Cone Hill. Right: Rug: Stark. Fabric: Fabricut. Bed and tables: Amy Berry Home. Bedding: Lenora by Dina Yang. Lamp shades: Fermoie.

64

All Things Cushioned To create a timeless look, Berry used blue-and-white fabrics for pillow-like surfaces all over the room: The headboard, chaise, and even the walls are upholstered. Fabric lampshades complete the look.

8. The Mudroom & Bathroom • BY CASTLE HOMES The first thing you do when you walk into your home? Drop everything, literally. The ideal mudroom always looks put-together no matter how many purses, coats, and bags are deposited there. Directly off the garage and side entrance, this one by the Castle Homes design team has two full peg-and-bench units for storing belongings, and it’s conveniently equipped with a laundry zone so kids can pop their own dirty jerseys right into the machine. “There’s no need to lug dirty sports gear or pet toys all over the house,” says vice president Heather Looney. Just upstairs, lead designer Joy Huber took cues from the nearby music room to design a bathroom that’s “artful, funky, and fun,” starring a wall of large-format marble tile. Opposite: Paint: Benjamin Moore. Washer and dryer: LG. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Chair: Palecek. Door handle: Rocky Mountain Hardware. Above: Tiles: The Tile Shop. Fixtures: Kohler. 9. The Office • BY DANIELLE ARPS “Creative people need to move around,” says Danielle Arps, founder of the buzzy firm Dani Arps, who typically spends her days designing offices for New York City start-ups (we’re talking 20,000-square-foot spaces). Her first step towards a clutterless home office with room to stretch? Eliminate the desk. “ Most files are stored digitally, so bulky office furniture with tons of storage isn’t necessary,” she explains. Instead, Arps favors large work tables that are perfect for meetings, and lounge-like seating for closer convos. By placing comfy chairs together around a little coffee table, “a secondary work area can be achieved, even in a small space,” she says. Furniture: Industry West. Wallcovering: Calico. Window treatments: The Shade Store. Accessories: Favor. Planters: The Sill. Paint: Benjamin Moore.

69

10. The Music Room • BY FORBES + MASTERS If you have a passion, make room for it. For this space tucked above the garage—the kind that so often goes underutilized—the Atlanta-based Forbes + Masters had a vision: “We’re in Music City! What better way to use a bonus room than to turn it into a listening lounge?” says Monet Masters. She and her partner, Tavia Forbes, chose furnishings that felt collected over time and deliberately 1970s-inspired: a modern shag carpet, a houndstooth sofa, and even sound-dampening wallpaper. “The ceiling paper felt a little trippy, which we loved, and the suede-like wallcovering reminded us of old-school speakers,” says Forbes, whose father crafted a storage unit to house a massive collection of vinyl. “This is the room where you just want to chill out.” Furnishings: Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Wallpaper: Arte. Ceiling paper: Mitchell Black. Record dividers: Architectural Grille. Lighting: Circa Lighting. Black swivel chair: Showroom 58.

70

Who needs acoustic tiles when you’ve got soundsoftening wallcovering?

11. The Back Porch BY BARCLAY BUTERA One of the best things about living in a house—as opposed to a comparably sized apartment—is spending at-home time outside. To create this complete outdoor living space, Newport Beach, California, designer Barclay Butera chose coral, white, and blue powdercoated finishes for the furniture, then layered them with hard-wearing outdoor fabrics in a range of patterns. “There’s nothing wrong with buying an outdoor set, but add some personality,” says the designer. Another trick: mixing real and faux outdoor plants. “Silk plants look so realistic now, and you don’t ever have to worry about watering them!” says Butera, which means more time actually lounging outside with a cocktail. Furnishings: Castelle. Fabrics: Kravet. Outdoor kitchen: Lynx. TV: LG. Rug: Jaipur Living. Umbrella: California Umbrella. Accessories: Napa Home & Garden.

WHO LIVES HERE? While vacationing on the Kona Coast, a couple with two young kids fell in love with the area and decided to build a (now frequently visited) second home.

“It’s definitely a cozy post-beach kind of room,” says Kwong. The B&B Italia sectional was the first piece the clients chose. Art: Michael J. Spear. Tray: Nickey Kehoe. Sconces: Orange Furniture. Rug: Holland & Sherry.

FOLLOW A PATH UP FROM THE OCEAN, across a sandy beach and rocky lava fields, and you’ll reach it: a vacation home tucked into the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, where stark simplicity provides a respite from the area’s prevailing tropical colors. “When we took on the project, the clients told us right away that they’re minimalists at heart,” says San Francisco– based designer Catherine Kwong. “That’s an easy thing to do in a big city loft, but we had to figure out, how did that translate to a house that’s open to the elements? And how do we make it a kind of place where people want to unwind?”

Kwong and her team worked with the home’s architect, Shay Zak of Zak Architecture, to lay an ideal foundation, using hard-wearing, weather-friendly materials like Alaskan yellow cedar and basalt (a.k.a. lava stone) to create a clean-lined structure where the indoors and outdoors—temperatures hover in the balmy mid-80s yearround—flowed easily into one another. For Kwong, the challenge was to bring in furnishings and decor that would make it feel relaxed, not austere.

Porch swings blend indoors and out.

Her answer: layer, layer, layer. “It’s a neutral color palette,” she says, referring to everything from the textiles (a mix of grays and ivories) to the artwork (all black and white, and all behind UV-filtering glass), “but it incorporates different types of media. The materials and fabrics all have a tactile hand, which makes it seem cozier.” Even the white paint that was used on all of the interior walls was chosen with warmth in mind. “The lighting on the Big Island is really bright, so we didn’t want a pure white,” Kwong explains. “We spent months testing out colors and ended up with Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee—actually a super-popular color that has a little softness to it.” And while the idea of white anything in a beach house occupied by two adults with two little kids might cause hesitation, Kwong assures that the pieces she chose—from the beige hemp rugs to indoor-outdoor canvas cushions on the dining chairs—are totally GR E AT RO OM family-friendly. “We made sure to Art: Sophie Tottie. balance the client’s minimalist Picture light: Remains aesthetic with how a beach house is Lighting. The Weatherproof Home For a house that can handle the elements—and kids, and vacationing adults. ALASKAN YELLOW CEDAR Popular with local builders because of its ability to withstand extreme heat and humidity, this wood has a clean, modern look. UV GLASS All of the art was placed behind light-filtering panels, so there’s no risk it’ll get faded when doors and windows are left open. BASALT For indoor and outdoor floors, Zak used basalt: a dark gray, hard-wearing lava stone native to Hawaii. “It keeps cool in the heat but has a nice softness,” says Kwong.

Two European metalworkers hire their New York–based daughter to create their dream home in the Utah high desert, beauty ensues.

project even if the clients weren’t her parents. Architect and interior designer Anik Pearson couldn’t say no when Malou and Patrice Humbert, European expats who run an ornamental ironworking business, bought a remote ranch in southern Utah in 2003 and asked for her help. The

Pearson created these adjustable slatted panels, similar to large shutters, to keep the walkway shaded and cool.

previous property had to be razed to create the home of their dreams. “The climate is very aggressive,” says Pearson of Salt Gulch, the valley where the home is situated. “The wood siding was completely deteriorated from UV rays. Birds were trying to burrow in the boards,” she recalls. “It was just going back to the land.”

Their plans for the new build: an attached guest house for visits from family and room for their metalwork and pottery, as well as furniture picked up on their travels. Fireresistant materials like steel, copper, and concrete were trucked in from as far as three hours away. A covered breezeway connects the main and guest houses, the pavement shaded by slatted steel panels; sturdy eaves protect against snowfall in winter. Pearson calls the house’s aesthetic “kind of Arts and Crafts, but inspired by Swiss chalets and traditional Japanese houses.” So that occupants can “see long distances across the vista and catch the elk, coyotes, mountain lions, and

mule deer that walk through,” Pearson placed five-paneled glass windows throughout. These also maximize sunlight, warming up surfaces and cutting down on energy costs. Even the interior was inspired by the property, which boasts an orchard full of fruit and nut trees and a stream for catching trout. “I collected different-colored stones that were strewn around. They became the color palette for the house,” Pearson says. The family’s passions collide in the kitchen. Malou oversaw the acid etching of a metal backsplash, which complements shelves displaying her collection of Van Briggle, McCoy, and Roseville pottery. Pearson’s idea for a gridded laylight ceiling is due to the kitchen being in the middle of the floor plan, away from any windows. While the home was imagined as a vacation spot, Pearson’s parents now live there full time. “They like it so much, they never like to leave,” she says of their self-sufficient estate. “They run out of wine before they run out of food!”
