W
hen the removalists set down the last box in the kitchen of our new home, I was already scrambling to get my shopping list down on paper. I could see every single thing I needed to do and buy to make this my perfect kitchen. It always amazes me how a change in space can reinvigorate you, so that even the act of buying a new mop can bring great joy (this really happened). A new place always means a little housewarming and, to be honest, my table-setting skills needed some attention. Especially as styling dramatic tabletops for brunches, lunches and cheese feasts have become a thing again. You know the ones – where flowers abound, plates are expertly mismatched, handmade ceramics hold salt flakes and ground pepper, and hand-stitched cloth napkins keep everyone nice. So it was this idea of setting a great table that sparked a story (and a shopping list); our resident style specialist Natalie Johnson went wild with some delicious table settings on p34. The main game, however, is Kitchens & Bathrooms (or K&B as we call them around here). Showcasing some of Australia’s most beautiful homes, the selection process was tough — with expert consideration by Cameron Bruhn, Head of School and Dean of Architecture at The University of Queensland; Brett Ward, general manager of international marketing at Brickworks; and Inside Out magazine editor Eliza O’Hare. “The thing that makes this award different,” says Eliza, “is that it isn’t just about exacting design and innovation — although we’ve seen a lot of that — it’s about beautiful homes with heart. One of the main criteria is that the projects need to be homes that the judges would actually want to wake up in every day.” The winners will be announced on October 22.

paige northwood Moving to the desert has inspired a new hands-on way of living and making art for this talented ceramicist and painter Why did you decide to make the move from the beaches of the NSW south coast to the desert of the Northern Territory? I was
obsessed with the work of the Hermannsburg Potters, so I just went out there: I was like, I have to go, and I ended up staying. It wasn’t a choice, I had to go – my curiosity got the better of me. I felt very ignorant about what happens in our country and I wanted to learn about Indigenous art and how empowering that can be for Indigenous Australians. I went out to learn about that and found so much more. At the moment I live in a small Aboriginal community called Hermannsburg [in the Ljirapinta Ward of MacDonnell Shire] and in Alice Springs on weekends. I’ve never lived in an Aboriginal community before. I’ve had lots to learn, and there’s so much space and it’s so beautiful, but it’s also very difficult at times because there is all that space and it’s kind of confronting because there’s a lot of trauma here. Are you working in the community? I run the Hermannsburg Potters studio. It’s a group of about 15 ladies who make lidded terracotta vessels, and they do landscapes of the area and the flora and fauna and tell stories. They show at Sabbia Gallery in Sydney and the Art Gallery of NSW collects some of their work as well. I look after everyone and make sure our work goes out to different galleries and kind of conceptually guide everyone – technically a bit as well. The studio is a safe place for people, where they gather and feel safe and get advice and help. It’s really challenging, but probably the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. How has the move changed your practice? It’s changed so much. I started digging for clay on the south coast out of curiosity to see how it would fire, but out here there’s so much [clay]. It’s so remote that you have to make do and use what’s around. I don’t like using artificial materials because I use my hands a lot and I don’t want the chemicals, so I like everything to be organic and natural. It’s very hands-on, and you’re dirty all the time and involved in life and the materials, as well as the landscape, so my work is definitely changing. It’s getting much deeper and richer. The colour palette I can achieve is really beautiful, too.
Paige (pictured) has had a number of solo and group exhibitions. All the paintings (above and below) are from her recent Sacred Life show, which explores the notions of bodily experience and transcendence. So too is the bronze-glazed work Feel III (top left), featuring clay sourced from Alice Springs. The ceramic piece (top centre) is from a previous solo show, The Mind That Bends (2018).
What can you tell us about your recent exhibition, Sacred Life, at Jerico Contemporary? My new work has a lot to do with
Central Australia in general, but also the community I live in. It was about processing all the horrific things that I had to be a part of out here, because there is so much trauma and pain and suffering and death; I’ve never been around so much death. and a generous, ergonomically shaped seat and back cushions. What makes it special Very much encapsulating the style of famous Italian furniture from the 1950s, such as Marco Zanuso’s Lady and Senior chairs, Frattini’s 831, or Lina, armchair brings its own unique features: a thin plywood armrest that also holds the back cushion in place and a very substantial, carefully shaped seat. The chair, originally known purely as model 831, was designed by one of the masters of mid-century Italian design, Gianfranco Frattini, who went on to design the renowned snake-like Boalum lamp for Artemide with Livio Castiglioni. Working as the studio apprentice for Gio Ponti, his architecture teacher at the Politecnico di Milano, Frattini was introduced to Cesare Cassina in 1954 as the latter was in the process of starting a new eponymous furniture company. The same year, Frattini created the 831 (Lina) armchair, which appeared in Domus magazine shortly afterwards and became a sought-after classic of Italian postwar design. Frattini went on to create a number of highly successful designs for Cassina, including the Sesann sofa (featured in a past issue of Inside Out), re-editioned by Tacchini. The Lina armchair (also re-editioned by Tacchini) offers a solid, comfortable upholstered armchair but, due to the visual lightness of its A-frame timber legs and slender armrests, never feels stodgy or heavy. What makes it special Designed by Jean Louis Iratzoki for French furniture company Alki, the Lasai (meaning quiet, calm and peaceful in Basque) chair has a traditional mid-century Scandinavian air but was actually conceived in 2013. Its neat appearance is partially due to a fabric-covered moulded plywood structure that envelopes the back cushion. The design is extremely comfortable and available in a wide variety of fabrics, leathers and eco-leathers plus two-tone versions, including a leather back with fabric cushions. Alki is well-known for its use of solid natural oak, but offers a range of staining options: Ash-Grey Oak, Tourbe Oak (dark chocolate), Carbon Oak (close to black) and White Stained Oak. Opening our homes section is an inhouse treat – a basketball/ handball ‘court’ in a 3.3m-high Sydney garage. The brainchild of interior designer Melissa Koch, it’s a large single car space with stencilled epoxy flooring installed by HP Constructions. Husband Jeremy found the Spalding hoop and Melissa had a scoreboard (not shown) customised by El Oso Negro. One thing’s for sure, getting the kids off their screens is no longer a problem.

After a decade of living in a tiny New York apartment, space and big-city style were high on the agenda when this family returned to renovate their Sydney home

Who lives here Melissa Koch, an interior designer; her husband Jeremy Koch, a stockbroker; and eight-year-old twins Harrison and Stella. Style of home A tired 1920s threebedroom, one-bathroom bungalow on Sydney’s lower north shore, which is now a glamorous two-storey home with plenty of bathrooms and a mudroom. After buying the house in 2008, it was rented out until Christmas 2015 when the family returned from overseas. Architect Jeremy Bull was commissioned in July 2016. Plans were approved in June 2017 and construction started the following January. The build took 12 months.

In order to use the room more often they combined it with a library and home office. “We eat at the table every night,” says Melissa. “And the kids use it, too — they often grab a book and curl up on the window seat to read before bed.” The Gubi ‘Moon’ table from Criteria is teamed with 1960s Italian dining chairs from The Vault Sydney. uying a house sight unseen isn’t usually the
best strategy, but it’s worked out remarkably well for Melissa and Jeremy Koch. Back in 2008, the couple were three years into a 10-year stint living in New York, where Jeremy had been transferred for work. With plans to eventually return to Sydney, they started scouring Australian real-estate websites for a house. “We wanted to be fairly close to the city and, after so much apartment living in New York, a backyard was a priority for us,” says Melissa. So when they found a 1920s house on a large block on the lower north shore, they snapped it up – despite not having inspected it in person. “We did send our parents and siblings to have a look on our behalf though. And there wasn’t really any fear in not having seen it because we knew we were going to make it our own,” Melissa explains. Fast-forward to 2015, when the family – now including four-year-old twins Harrison and Stella – finally moved back to Sydney and into the house. Melissa admits the move was bittersweet. “I’d still love to be living in New York, but it felt like the right time to return. The twins were about to start school and we could see the advantages of being near the beach and having so much more space.” The couple engaged architect Jeremy Bull from Alexander &Co to help them design their dream home. “We knew how we wanted the house to function and flow, but he was amazing at finessing and improving on that,” says Melissa. For conservation reasons, the heritage facade had to be retained, but the couple decided to demolish the rest. A twostorey building was designed, although the upstairs level wasn’t visible from the street. That ‘secret’ second floor now contains three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Downstairs, the new floor plan features a grand entrance hall, as well as a family room, combined kitchen and living area, separate dining room, bathroom, powder room and a quintessentially American mudroom, which leads through to the laundry. During her stay in New York, Melissa, who had previously worked in advertising, retrained as an interior designer and spent nine years working for high-end Manhattan design firm Cullman & Kravis Associates. This role influenced not only the interior design of their new home but the layout as well. “I got a real appreciation of how you have to make every inch count in the apartments [I worked on] in New York,” she says, adding. “Here, we kept to the original home’s footprint, and because we had been used to living in smaller spaces we didn’t feel we needed a lot of [extra] air in a room for it to function well. I also learnt a lot about lighting and how you can use a few tricks to make rooms feel bigger.” KITCHEN Both keen cooks, the Kochs wanted a large kitchen where they could entertain as well as make their Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. “I also wanted a nice big island where the kids could sit and do their homework,” Melissa says. Despite working on a few projects in the Hamptons while she was in the US, Melissa says her design style has stayed “innately modern traditional”. It’s reflected in details such as the beautiful herringbone floors and panelled walls in the hallway, the bespoke joinery throughout and the sophisticated colour palette, some of which was influenced by the couple’s art collection. “It’s very classic and timeless,” Melissa says. “If we’re still living here in 20 years, it won’t feel dated.” Now that the build is finished, the family love being able to stretch out in their new home. The twins, who were sleeping in a curtained-off corner of the living room in the family’s one bedroom Greenwich Village apartment, are particularly enjoying their own bedrooms. However, Melissa says that her children’s favourite part of the house is actually the garage, fitted out with its own basketball hoop, ‘Koch Court’ scoreboard and table-tennis table. “It’s funny, you build this beautiful house and the room they love the most is the garage,” she laughs. FORMAL LIVING Two artworks by Danish artist Christiane Spangsberg influenced the design of the main living area. “We sized the panelling to highlight them,” Melissa explains. lessons learnt “Never use white grout with floor tiles in high-traffic areas” MELISSA KOCH, HOMEOWNER
“This is advice I give to all my clients but didn’t take myself! I desperately wanted white grout with our mudroom/laundry floor tiles – like the fresh, clean sample I’d seen – so against our tiler’s advice to go with light grey, I chose white. Those muddy sneakers and soccer boots destroyed the pristine white grout almost immediately and I’m now learning to love the ‘worn-in’ look! I would also say that it’s important to enjoy the process and expect things not to go exactly according to the program – no matter how much you pre-plan! Just as in life, deliveries are delayed or the wrong product accidentally delivered, things break or are discontinued, people get sick and weather intervenes. You need to learn to adapt and be flexible.”

With news that they were pregnant, a Melbourne couple ‘exploded’ their small renovation into a full-scale rebuild

Six years after buying in 2010, the couple submitted plans for the renovation to council. The building work took a year and by the end of it — mid-2018 — they were parents of two. While the project started out small, $$$$ the total cost was $500,000+.
COURTYARD At the back of the extension, the family room’s corner windows form a bench seat when opened. An ornamental grape vine provides dappled shade. Shaila bought the antique French table and chairs at Graham Geddes Antiques. “We eat out here a lot,” she says. The pavers are Fiandre ‘Core Shade Cloudy Structured’ porcelain tiles from Artedomus. ENTRANCE (opposite) Tessellated tiles on the verandah and a black-painted door (Dulux Domino) maintain the Victorian tradition at the front. “I love the green curtain of the Virginia creeper in summer, and the beautiful red tones of its leaves in autumn,” says Shaila.

baby changes everything, so the
saying goes, and Melbourne couple Adam and Shaila would heartily agree after their plans for a minor rejig took a much bigger turn. “We wanted a laundry, and to move a single wall in the kitchen, but the project grew – exploded in fact – after our initial brief to Technē Architecture + Interior Design,” says Shaila. The grand two-storey Victorian home in the city’s inner-north had been home to the professional couple for six years when they met with Technē co-director Nick Travers in 2015. “After coming to us, then learning that their first child was on the way, the project quickly grew to involve the whole house,” says Nick. “We removed the back half and created a new structure to connect with the outdoors. During the process, every other room – the existing bathrooms, bedrooms and front rooms – were enhanced.” After gathering ideas from magazines and Instagram, the couple were attracted to the idea of letting in more natural light while retaining a warm feeling through the use of timber. “I’d describe our style as simple, stripped-back and contemporary,” says Shaila. “We wanted a balance between function and form – especially in the kitchen area, which we really focused on to ensure it was convenient for everyday life and for entertaining. It was important for our existing Mark Tuckey dining table to fit into the space, and to have enough room around it for easy movement between kitchen and dining.” From this brief, a generous allowance of 1200mm between each of the kitchen benches and the dining table dictated the overall footprint of the extension. “Also, Adam and Shaila wanted to have a lounge setting that faced the garden,” says Bianca Baldi, senior interior designer at Technē. A pitched, pavilion-style roof design with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors allowed for the muchcraved natural light, and from there the design decisions flowed. “We used SketchUp 3D software to show Adam and Shaila our vision for the space, including our suggested furniture, which they fell in love with,” says Bianca. Favouring a neutral palette with a raw yet refined finish, they laid wide white-oiled oak floors throughout, and painted the walls Dulux Lexicon Quarter. In the original Victorian structure, the home office and formal sitting room were rejuvenated with striking black-framed steel doors, and full-height sheer linen curtains from Warwick to create a soft yet dramatic backdrop. Storage was scarce, so they looked for every opportunity to create more, including a stylish wine cellar tucked underneath the stairs. “Later in the project, we also created attic storage for all the baby stuff that takes up way too much room when it’s not in use,” says Shaila. “Also, Adam likes high-tech, so a home-automation system was installed throughout the house so we can control all the lights, heating, blinds and even the front door from our smart phones.” Both the compact front garden and the garden bed that runs alongside the pool were created by Eckersley Garden Architecture prior to the renovation. The final step was removing the high bluestone front fence and replacing it with more appropriate wrought-iron pickets. “It was the perfect finish to the renovation,” says Shaila, “enabling us to see out to the street – that completed our renovation journey.” Technē Architecture + Interior Design is at techne.com.au 64 | INSIDE OUT

DINING AREA “The angled roof is one of our favourite features,” says Shaila. “I was worried that our changes wouldn’t do the house justice, but it’s an amazing design.” Matching the timber lining on the ceiling and the floorboards was another priority; both surfaces are oak brushed with Extreme White Oil from Woodos Australia but the ceiling boards are a little thinner. The overhead cupboards in the kitchen and nearby cabinetry (heading down the hall) are faced with an Oak White Wash timber veneer from George Fethers & Co. POOL “This area was originally a sea of beige,” says Shaila, “so we had Eckersley Garden Architecture do the narrow bed behind the pool to create a more natural, green environment to look at from the living area.” The new extension is framed in structural steel with a black powdercoated finish, which echoes the black elsewhere in the house. Liz and Pat bought the fourbedroom house at the end of 2012, eight years after the previous owners added the extension. hy is it that so many people
living in Australia persist with the myth that it is always summer here? Granted, the climate in this part of the world is measurably better than in many other places. But still, we get winter. Why else would this be the birthplace of the Ugg boot? None of this comes as a surprise to Liz and Pat, whose renovation in the Sydney suburb of Annandale gave them a house for all seasons. The property had already been through a major transformation courtesy of the previous owners, who added a two-storey extension to the rear of the original California bungalow. “They did a lot of hard work and it was very nice, so the bones of the house were there,” says Liz. “What we’ve done is mostly aesthetic.” They tackled the exterior first, enlisting Tim Samuel Design to tame the wilderness with landscaping and, later, by incorporating a swimming pool. “We live really close to the school, so people drop in,” says Liz, who’s mum to two children. “On the last day of term, we must have had 11 little boys in the water. Then, when the kids go to bed, I’ll jump in and have a glass of wine and look up at the night sky.” When their focus turned indoors, Liz stumbled across the interior designer of her dreams when Suzanne Gorman – owner of Studio Gorman – appeared in a magazine story featuring her own home. “I loved everything about it,” Liz sighs. “I’d have been happy if she just picked up her house and transplanted it here!” Instead, Suzanne and her team (including builder Andy Bishop from Arthouse Projects) worked with Liz and Pat to adapt the house to their needs, adding elements to complement their existing furniture. Pat had his heart set on a fireplace, so together they found space for one by losing the toilet and basin from the laundry, which allowed the living space to expand. “We just love it,” says Liz. “In winter, whoever gets up first turns it on and the warmth travels through the whole house.” The only other structural change was raising the height of a few dividing walls, to make the ground floor less open-plan.

The result is two separate living spaces that can be used at the same time. Even more inviting, the TVs in both are hidden behind joinery when not in use. “That was an idea Pat and I had,” says Liz. “It’s so much nicer to draw attention to the books and accessories instead, especially when you have people over.” Beyond that, the project was all about adding texture and layers. “Before, there was more stainless steel and wire in the house, which was beginning to look dated,” says Liz. “We went for warmer materials.” The custom leather handrails on the stairway is a perfect example – and a treat every time you touch them. Meanwhile, the bedrooms were softened with clever wallpaper and curtain combinations, and unexpected light fittings. “That’s why you use an interior designer,” says Liz. “You can renovate yourself and do quite a nice job, but someone like Suzanne will encourage you to make bolder choices, like putting different materials and patterns together.” 76 | INSIDE OUT
At the same time, Liz admits this was where they went over budget. “Sometimes you’d think, ‘Why are we putting a leather trim on the bloody balustrade?’ But those are the details you look at every day and love,” she says. “We probably went about $50,000 over, but that was our choice. Let’s up-spec. Let’s buy the mature trees. Let’s get the black Fenix Niro Ingo cupboards because they don’t show fingerprints. It was worth it. We haven’t regretted anything we’ve done, but I was definitely surprised at how much a renovation can end up costing.” Now that the work is finished, Pat says he’s never moving. In the summer, he’s happiest outside at the helm of the barbecue while the kids splash in the pool. On winter evenings, he can be found by the fire with a glass of something from his bar nook in the living area. “We love what our home has to offer across the seasons,” says Liz. “We wouldn’t change a thing.” To see more of Suzanne Gorman’s work, visit studiogorman.com

uzzing with artists, designers and a super
relaxed, people-watching vibe, Stockholm’s trendy Södermalm is where fashion designer Natalia Altewai, photographer Marcus Ohlsson and their daughter Kinley call home. The couple met when Marcus was called in to shoot the campaign for one of Natalia’s Altewaisaome collections, and she moved into his apartment some time after that. Transforming the bachelor pad into a family flat meant a joint renovation, with a feminine touch. The apartment was small, so they called in an architect to maximise the internal footprint and brighten the space with more natural light. This involved opening up the kitchen and living zone while still retaining a level of division, semi-separating them by way of an open shelving unit storing the couple’s large collection of photography and art books. Natalia and Marcus wanted a generous kitchen that could also double as a workspace and place to socialise with friends. “We can be in this space 24 hours a day. We love staying up late and working from here,” Natalia says of the oversized, milky-white-veined marble island that just fits. Changing the location of some rooms has worked well, with the main bedroom reconfigured to have a view of the yard. By borrowing space from the kitchen, they were also able to gain more space for the bathroom, which has a luxurious palette of green and white marble, brass hardware and brushed-copper taps. Like the rest of the apartment, the joinery is by local craftsmen. While a professional solved the practical problems, the creative homeowners had firm ideas about the interior fitout. Natalia and Marcus, who has shot for the likes of Dior, Goop, H&M and Harper’s Bazaar, admit that they are bowerbirds and often buy on a whim when they’re travelling. Marcus’s Instagram features snapshots from Rome, France, Italy, LA, Berlin and Tokyo, and the couple have shipped pieces home from many of those places. “Everything has history,” says Natalia, who was born in Poland, raised in Malmö and attended fashion school in Milan. Accessories such as the collection of mobiles in the living area came from a market in Clignancourt, a huge trunk was purchased from an estate sale in New York and, in the kitchen, the series of wooden cutting boards was picked up at a small shop in Japan. “We bought them from an old craftsman who looked like a ninja. They’re amazing, but now we can’t find his shop again!” There’s still a loyalty to local design though, with mid-century Scandinavian furniture and homewares throughout. For more rudimentary pieces, such as the kitchen bar stools and bed, they looked to Ikea. Even the rug in Kinley’s room is a “vintage Ikea” that Marcus has held onto for a long time. One of them is the spectacular green marble slab that Natalia bought from a dump in Malmö for the equivalent of $15. Instead of a classic coastal look, the owners of this northern Sydney home wanted a design that reflected its surroundings
unexpected windows of opportunity that are just too hard to pass up. For Lizzie and Michael Taylor, that ‘window’ was in their living room. “We weren’t actively looking to move,” says Lizzie. “We had a plan that was two-to-five years away, but the opportunity came earlier than expected.” The couple had seen the three-bedroom 1950s house listed in their local paper in 2014 and were instantly drawn to its outlook – with views across Manly’s Shelly Beach – and access to a national park from the back gate. The timber-frame home was charming, but the bedroom count was too low for their family of six and the choppy layout didn’t have the indoor-outdoor flow they were after. Outdoor living is important to the Taylors, so their focus was as strong on the outdoor areas as the inside spaces. “I’d rather garden than do housework!” Lizzie laughs, a sentiment echoed by the equally green-thumbed Michael. After making a few cosmetic changes, the family squeezed into the house and began planning a more comprehensive renovation, scheduled for 2015. Together, a trusted architect, interior designer, builder and landscaper brought the Taylors’ vision to life and the result is just the right balance of character and comfort. The home’s original layout lacked a connection to the outdoors and the striking beauty of the landscape just beyond the Taylors’ fence line. “We wanted to create a relationship between the garden and the house, and to open up the ocean views from the front of the house to the back,” says Lizzie. The floor plan needed rejigging to create flowing spaces the family could comfortably reside in, and flexible entertaining areas, inside and out. When it came to style, Lizzie wanted a look that complemented the beach and bush surrounds, without having to run with the usual coastal styling formula. “It took a while for me to visualize exactly what I wanted,” says Lizzie, who drew on her love of native flora and Aboriginal art in the process. What she and interior designer Alexandra Gourlay of Vellum Interiors came up with is a modern Australian look that incorporates the rich textures and colours of our natural environment.

The couple didn’t hesitate to engage architect Caroline Pidcock, who had redesigned their previous home a few suburbs away. Caroline’s approach to salvaging older buildings rather than completely razoring them falls in line with Lizzie and Michael’s appreciation of the past and their ideas around working with what you’ve got. Their ‘new to us’ home had loads of potential, as Lizzie explains. “It had a very solid foundation and lovely tallowwood floorboards, so we decided to keep the bones of the home but reconfigure the internal design.” The kitchen, once a dinky little room in the middle of the ground floor, was repositioned by the front terrace, while a shake-up of the first-floor layout created two additional bedrooms. In an unexpected design spin on the casual beachhouse aesthetic, the shiplap ceilings throughout the house were included as a friendly nod to the panelled walls that featured in the original seventy-year-old home. Landscape designer Julien Roy of Landforms, known for creating outdoor spaces that respect and preserve natural environments, came up with a design that worked with the existing sandstone bedrock in the backyard. The chemical-free swimming pool was carved out of the rock, and the spa – clad in sparkling mint mosaic tiles – was strategically positioned to take in the view. “We love that we can sit in the spa and look straight through the house to the ocean,” says Lizzie. 96 | INSIDE OUT

“We worked within the constraints of an existing building and the condition of that building posed a few challenges,” says Lizzie. Walls weren’t always plumb and there were structural issues that needed immediate attention, but thankfully any issues were sorted swiftly by builder Angus Urquhart of Anchor Building Co. When it was time to decorate, the decision-weary couple were happy to be guided by Alex. “Our brief to her was to help us select interesting pieces that evoked an ambience of character and homeliness,” says Lizzie. “We completely trusted Alex to tie together our pieces and she took care of it.” The result was sandy textures and hues paired with oceanic blues and breezy neutrals that reference the coastal location, while clean-lined furniture and flashes of brass have kept the look a notch or two above ‘beachy casual’. Alex incorporated some of the existing furniture into the scheme and drew additional inspiration from the Taylors’ art collection. “Alex really helped to re-energise the family and make us excited about the house again,” says Lizzie. “We had great relationships with all of our contractors,” she adds. “We felt very lucky to have such a wonderful team that worked so hard and gave us the highest quality of service.” Caroline Pidcock is based in Millers Point, NSW; 0418 248 010 or pidcock.com.au. knowledge of design and aesthetics, the owners of this home in Sydney’s Newtown had a clear vision for their new kitchen. “The clients wanted something that was classic and minimal yet modern, timeless, functional and beautiful,” says Alice Villella of Alice Villella Interior Design (AV-ID). Located in a new extension, the kitchen had to feel united with the adjoining living and alfresco areas while remaining the hero of the space. A light, warm selection of whites, mid-tone timbers, navy, greys and a little blush were chosen to achieve a unified interior where tones and textures blend smoothly. “The client wanted a contemporary Australian feel to the space, so that drove the colour palette,” Alice explains. “At the same time we decided that marble and timber would be the main features.” To achieve the timeless aesthetic they wanted, Carrara marble was specified for the surfaces and splashback, with Dulux Natural White for the walls and custom cabinetry by Scotts Country Look Kitchens. Light French oak engineered floorboards in Ground from Made by Storey were used throughout. Accents of copper, walnut and matt black add an extra layer of luxury and warmth. 100 | INSIDE OUT

Designed to be the focal point of the home’s new extension, the kitchen needed to be practical yet beautiful. It also had to blend smoothly with the adjoining living areas and entertainer’s deck. High-end Asko, Wolf and Qasair appliances deliver the latest technology to the kitchen yet don’t dominate visually. Instead, it’s the high-quality materials, unique mirror-image routed doors and black and brass light fittings (from RUBN Lighting and Douglas and Bec) that really steal the show. “It’s a functional kitchen but also quite compact,” says Villella. “The balance of crisp white joinery and natural finishes make it a wonderfully balanced space that is soothing and enjoyable to be in.” Alice Villella Interior Design can be contacted through av-id.com.au

his colourful kitchen in the quiet Melbourne
suburb of Armadale belongs to a family with three teenage children, who all love having friends over. Their original U-shaped 1980s kitchen was cramped and impractical, so they asked architect Felicity Mason of Saltbox Design and interior designer Wendy Davey at Cranberry Design to help them create a room with a large oven and spaces for multiple people to cook in.
the design The family wanted the kitchen to be the centre of their home, so it’s been designed as a place where people can gather and chat while cooking. “The main part of the kitchen is purely for entertaining,” explains Wendy. “Positioned right next to the island is the bar, with glassware stored at the back of the island for easy access. In addition, the spaces around the island are large enough for guests to stand around and talk.” At the front are curved edges that make the island more comfortable to lean on, as well as breaking up the rectangular orientation of the home. Shapely pendant lights above draw the focus to the centre of the kitchen.
the palette “At the entrance to the home, the front door is green and the first room you get to has pink and green roman blinds, so we brought some of that colour to the kitchen,” says Wendy. The Inax green splashback tiles from Artedomus are complemented by the Ercol ‘Original’ stools in Forest. The custom-made brass box hiding the rangehood and the brass cupboard handles bring an element of fun, while the marble splashback tones down the bright colours. “We originally chose a cheaper marble, but were worried about the porosity of it when it came to messy cooking,” says Wendy. “In the end, we opted for this Super White Marble from CDK Stone. It’s a dolomite, which is harder than the average marble and meant we could run the stone right up behind the cooktop.”

the butler’s pantry The family were keen to include a butler’s pantry so their teenage children had a space they could use freely. “A butler’s pantry is a godsend when you have older kids; they do all their food prep in there, which keeps the mess hidden,” says Wendy. She warns that getting the design right for a butler’s pantry can be tricky. “If it doesn’t work well, you end up with half your stuff in the pantry and half in the main kitchen, which makes for a really dysfunctional space. terrace, this kitchen in a huge combined kitchen/ dining/living area wraps around a new pool. The couple who live here have a young family and, while they loved the convenience of their inner-city location and all it offers around them, they also wanted to entertain friends and extended family at home. What’s been created is a perfect harmony of practicality and style. “It’s a really warm kitchen space in our big living area,” says the owner. “It stands out. And on top of that, the materials chosen for the benchtops, splashback and island are all non-porous modern materials, which are so incredibly easy to clean.”

The design and style was left open for Maria Roussos of design firm Schemes and Spaces. “Our one ask was that all her decisions were practical, and embraced everyday family use and entertaining,” says the owner.

the surprise For the owner, the key element of the renovation was how smoothly it all went. “You hear of horror stories,” she says, “but we had the kitchen designed completely, including all the fittings, before we started the build. recent Housing Industry Association report pegged
the average cost of a kitchen renovation at around $30,000. If your style bar is set high (and we know it is), you’ll need to be clever with your design decisions and material choices to bring your project in for as little as that, so we went to the experts for help.

Costs can really add up here, so think carefully about what you need and pare back to the essentials. This might mean ditching the double oven, the waterdispensing fridge and the warming drawer. Once you’ve narrowed down your requirements, get to know the brands and models you’re interested in and be creative with your shopping. Source competitive quotes, ask for discounts from major retailers, and keep on top of published sales and package deals that bundle together same-brand appliances. Look for runout models that are reduced in price. Renovator websites and auctions can yield box-damaged high-end appliances that are as good as new.

cabinetry New cabinetry is the big ticket item in most jobs. But if you’re happy with the layout of your kitchen and the carcasses are in good condition, you may be able to replace the doors and drawer fronts only. “People bring in their old doors and we remake in the same size, in whatever material and style they like,” says cabinetmaker Thomas Garvey of Mister Ply&Wood (misterplywood.com.au). “The most cost-effective material is laminate, but we can also do polyurethane or timber.” If new cabinets are a necessity, look at off-the-shelf options such as those from Kaboodle (bunnings.com.au). Design help is available, and units come in standard sizes or can be cut to custom widths. Ikea also has several ranges of kitchen cabinets as well as door and drawer fronts. Custom cabinetry is at the top end of the price spectrum. According to Chris and Vic Volpe, owners of Volpe Cabinetmaking (volpecabinetmaking.com. au), the entry point is melamine. “Ravine or Woodmatt natural timber finishes from Polytec are more premium and have a nicer range of colours,” says Chris. Laminex has similar wood-look styles.

If stone is on your wishlist, it can be achieved on a budget. “Both natural and man-made stones start at around $600 per slab for the raw material,” says Aga Hulewicz, sales and interior design consultant at Marable (marable.com.au). “You may only need one slab for a small galley kitchen, but you’ll likely need at least two if you have an island. Man-made slabs come in standard sizes starting at around 3m x 1.4m. A similarly priced slab of natural stone may be smaller and have some minor but visible imperfections.” The level of fabrication work also affects the total price – this means the edge profile and cut-outs. “A 20mm pencil edge is the starting point, and anything after that will add to the cost,” says Aga. “Specifying an undermount sink or flush-mount cooktop will also increase the cost as the cut-outs must be more precise.” For a less expensive option, look at laminate, which is available in a wide range of colours and can be made to order or even bought off the shelf. “A laminate benchtop is usually easy to unscrew, remove and replace with new,” says Thomas Garvey. “You may damage some of the splashback in the process, so factor in possible repair or replacement there.” It could cost as little as $600 for a new laminate benchtop, depending on the style and edge profile you choose.

fittings, hardware and internals The cost of drawer and cupboard mechanisms are usually built into your joinery price, but it’s worth checking what you’re getting. “To manage your budget, reduce the number of drawers,” suggests Chris Volpe. “Corner cabinets, pull-out pantries, inner drawers, spice drawers and lift-up doors can all significantly increase the price of your kitchen, so choose only the elements that are important to you.” Soft-close drawers and cupboards cost a little extra but may be worth it, especially if you have kids or careless teenagers around. Handles or finger-pull details vary in price, so they can be an opportunity to save money or to ‘luxe up’ a basic kitchen. Sinks also very widely in price, from roughly $200 up to $1000. Whatever else you’ve decided on, choose the best kitchen mixer your budget allows, since this is one item you will be using constantly.

Tile is the most popular splashback material, although it’s also possible to use glass, stone or laminate. The splashback is a great spot to save money on, with plain subway tiles available for about $40 per square metre. But given the relatively small number of square metres, it’s an opportunity to make a style statement using colour, pattern or interesting shapes without spending too much, particularly if you’ve economised elsewhere. Just remember that you’ll pay a little more in labour for small or irregularly shaped tiles. Alternatively, consider a slab of stone. “Stone is commonly used for splashbacks,” says Aga Hulewicz. “It often ends up being slightly cheaper than for a benchtop as there are no visible edges to polish and no cut-outs required, except for power points.”
THE BIG PICTURE Builder Chris Lloyd of Amme Construction (ammeconstruction.com.au) shares his top three tips for keeping kitchen-renovation costs under control + “Leave your services (electricity, gas and water) where they are to reduce your labour costs. This can be quite a significant saving.” + “Modulate your cabinetry design to suit standard sizes. Most kitchen board for carcasses comes in 600mm and 1200mm widths, so stay within this to get the best economies from your materials.” + “Labour is a significant cost, especially on site. A carpenter or builder’s hourly rate may make it more expensive to build a flat-pack kitchen on site than have one made in a factory. Make sure your tiles, appliances and fittings are on site in good time to avoid paying for extra visits from tradies.”

BATHROOM BLITZ Style can be yours on a budget – just balance the splurge with ‘the save’ WORDS VICTORIA BAKER
time for some real talk. Banks are putting the squeeze on lending, and building costs seem to be ever-increasing, so it makes sense to keep a lid on your renovation costs. But that doesn’t mean letting go of your dream tiles or tapware. Instead, think about your budget as a balancing act. If you have your heart set on a particular (and pricy) material or feature, make that the hero of your space and stick to simpler choices elsewhere. Here’s our advice on containing the costs of your project in a few important areas.
trades
Even though your bathroom is a relatively small space, a lot of trades are required to renovate it. “You’ll need a builder or carpenter, a plumber, electrician, tiler, waterproofer and possibly a painter, too,” says builder Chris Lloyd of Amme Construction (ammeconstruction.com.au). “Some of the trades need to come at least twice; once for rough-in and once for fit-off.” It’s difficult to accurately predict the cost of labour, as blowouts can be caused by pre-existing structural issues. “With a bathroom renovation, you almost always need to strip out the existing walls and floor in order to re-waterproof to Australian standards. This often means you’ll reveal some pre-existing issues that will need work, plus you’ll have to reinstate wall linings and floors because they get damaged in the demolition,” explains Chris. It’s important to include a contingency of 15–20 per cent on top of your budget for unexpected surprises.

tiles Tiles can add colour, pattern, character… and cost. If you have something extra special in mind, ration it to a single wall or small area to get the impact you want without overspending. Think about whether you need all the walls to be fully tiled, too. “The areas you don’t want to scrimp on are waterproofing and tiling,” says Chris. “If you get those wrong and end up with a leak, you’ll have to pull everything out and start again.” Handmade tiles with irregular profiles and variable thicknesses are more labour intensive for the tiler, and therefore more expensive to lay. If you love the look of handmade encaustic tiles, consider porcelain reproductions, which are more regularly sized and easier to maintain. Marble-look tiles are also popular for the same reasons. “A larger-format tile is generally cheaper to lay than a smaller format because it’s quicker,” says Chris. “Standard pricing will generally cover 300 x 300, or 300 x 600[mm] tiles.”
bath In a family bathroom, a bath is often a must-have, and for some it’s a luxury they don’t want to do without. Freestanding baths look great and are easier to install than built-in versions, which require plumbing into the wall. “Having a freestanding bath actually saves a trip for the plumber,” says Daniel. “It can be installed at the fit-off stage.” Acrylic baths are the least expensive option and are available in a variety of sizes.

Choose taps, mixers, showers and accessories from the same brand and range to keep your design looking cohesive. Chrome is generally the cheapest finish. “You do get what you pay for when it comes to taps and mixers,” says Daniel Bothamley of Top Gun Plumbing. “The more you pay, the nicer the finish looks, and the smoother the operation.” Another way to cut costs is to have the taps or mixer on the vanity rather than installed on the wall. “It’s more expensive if I have to chase the pipe into a brick wall – the same goes for in-wall cisterns for toilets,” says Daniel. Back-to-wall toilets are always a more cost-effective choice. “The best way to save on plumbing costs is to keep everything in the same place,” he says. “Moving the plumbing can be particularly expensive if your bathroom is set on a concrete slab at ground level and has brick walls.”
An off-the-shelf vanity is cost-effective if you can find the right size for your space. Try Reece, Domayne or Vanity by Design for high-end designs, often with marble benchtops and an integrated sink. If you need a custom-made vanity, choose your door or drawer-front materials carefully. Laminate (think Laminex or Polytec) is a cost-effective choice, as is vinyl-wrapped cabinetry, with polyurethane and timber veneer at the higher end. “If our clients are renovating a kitchen and bathroom at the same time, it’s often possible to use an offcut from the kitchen for the bathroom vanity,” says Aga Hulewicz, sales and interior design consultant at Marable (marable.com.au). his divine bathroom is hidden inside a 1960s
red-brick home in Sydney’s Balgowlah Heights. The house is set against a backdrop of Norfolk pines, and the family who live here wanted to create a place of calm, functionality and connection to nature. They hired Manly-based interior designer Wanda Szychowska at The Same to create what she describes as a “functional, beautiful space that brings a luxurious experience”.

The two mirrors above the vanity add to the effect. “A large single mirror would have overpowered the room; having two custom mirrors brings a more subtle undertone. The herringbone tiles add depth, texture and a real sense of luxury. It’s a statement of significance without being overwhelming.”

The colours are enhanced by the light in the room. “During the day the sun comes through the skylight and reflects off the marble. GREY MATTERS Three children and a busy life called for a thoughtful design to treat the owners of this Melbourne home

is always a challenge. We want to respect period charm as we add the practicalities, which is tricky when dealing with functional spaces such as the bathroom pictured here. Located in one of Melbourne’s wide, leafy suburban streets, the house is a California bungalow full of 1930s details. The ensuite off the main bedroom was part of a larger renovation by DX Architects in conjunction with builder JMBC. Interior designer Gillianne Griffiths of Studio Griffiths was then brought in to sort the interiors. Her design embraced many of the original elements, including the ornate ceilings, leadlight windows and glass door panels, while contemporising the home to suit the family. The renovation focused on creating a light and whimsical interior with statement touches, such as the dramatic dark shades throughout, to reflect the clients’ creative personalities.
the brief The owners asked for an “escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life”. They wanted calm and tranquil adult-friendly retreat that didn’t cater to their three young children.
the palette A monochromatic palette was used throughout the house, with grey chosen as the hero tone in the main ensuite. “The neutral stone on the vanity benchtop and walls to hip height [New Savior honed limestone] is our favourite surface, especially when the morning light is streaming in,” says the owner. “We really love our bath, and are still pinching ourselves that we don’t have to share a bathroom with our children any longer!”

The owners are very happy with the result. “We really appreciate the sophisticated and beautiful way Studio Griffiths merged old and new, and the very practical flow of the revised floor plan and spaces,” says one. Gillianne also chose a natural oak finish for the vanity to match up with some of the owners’ existing furniture. “It’s great that our furniture and accessories are now celebrated in a very contemporary language,” adds the owner. ook at any photograph of a 1960s
house in Palm Springs and breeze blocks will probably make an appearance. Thought to have been invented by US architect Frank Lloyd Wright, inspired by the designs on Mayan temples, they were traditionally used on exterior walls as a way of stopping people seeing into the big windows of midcentury houses. They were often used as a decorative way of blocking harsh sunlight, and were ubiquitous in Australia. Originally cast from concrete, by the 1970s cheap versions were being produced and the humble ‘textile block’ fell out of favour with style gurus. But breeze blocks are back in a big way, and savvy companies such as Brickworks are at the forefront of the renewed uptake. “Their transcendence through time is an ode to their unrivalled endurance and diverse adaptability,” says Brett Ward, Brickworks general manager of international marketing. In a small courtyard or outdoor area, breeze blocks provide shade and natural ventilation, without making the space feel enclosed or claustrophobic. Breeze blocks have a high thermal mass, so they reduce the need for heating or cooling as well. Their mass also means they reduce noise, so are great for creating a private area within a bigger outdoor space.

Bring an extra dimension to your home by adding a breeze-block feature wall or screen in front of it. If the structure has a lot of horizontal or flat lines, a star- or circular-patterned block will break up the bulk of solid walls. Squarepatterned blocks will remain in keeping with the angles but bring in a less solid layer. These sorts of screens work well as carports or along the side of a building.
Breeze blocks create durable and beautiful screens that offer weather protection, security, ventilation and privacy, while still allowing natural light to shine through. When they’re used in a front wall, they shelter the outside of a house from prying eyes, but the gaps in the bricks allow the connection between house and street to remain, without the house feeling shut away.

Position a breeze-block wall correctly and it will bring drama and nuance to a space. During the day, romantic dappled light streams through the bricks, creating shadows and twinkling light. In the evenings, light can pass through the small holes, creating its own lantern effect. One straight wall will have a far-reaching effect, while a corner wall creates a more concentrated effect.
To connect the outside of a property with the inside, think about running an external breeze-block wall along the front, either as a load-bearing or feature wall. To bring a really cohesive feel to a home, consider using breeze blocks to decorate the base of a kitchen island, up the wall of a staircase or on the upper reaches of a balcony. Just remember that they create easy footholds for children to climb!

Our own Block insider Shannon Vos on the pros and cons of the five mostly amazing designs in the latest series
’ve said it once, I’ve said it a
thousand times, “The kitchen is the heart of the home and should be treated like the treasured, straight-A child it is.” In this year’s The Block, the kitchens command the ground floor of each three-storey townhouse. Whoever gets to buy these masterpieces is sure to have the latest and greatest in kitchen technology and design. Let’s have a closer look at the line-up...
Plan-flipping, goal-kicking, grandchild-
juggling juggernauts Mitch and Mark from Sydney kept it classy in the kitchen and delivered (on time as always) a stylish space with classic nuances and luxurious finishes. It’s not a kitchen of the future by any means, but it is current – perfect for the St Kilda crowd – and will last for decades. The navy, white and champagne cabinetry sits well with the light stone and dark, moody floors; overall, it’s a well-balanced space. The smart use of materials lends a feeling of high-end luxury, but they didn’t go overboard with their spending. Caesarstone’s White Quartz brings the bling, and the champagne cabinetry, while not everyone’s cup of tea, turns up the class. Pop-up GPOs (socket outlets) keep the visual clutter to a minimum, but the faux windows cheapen the room. They could have been left out altogether, as a sheer curtain with a warm LED is a great way to soften a kitchen space. While it would have been nice to see a few stools at the island to cater for families, the inclusion of a dedicated butler’s pantry makes up for most of the shortfalls in this spectacular reveal. 136 | INSIDE OUT

Big spenders Tess and Luke certainly
needed a win for their moody kitchen but it wasn’t to be, even though the space was highly praised by all three judges. Soft-touch matt-black cabinetry will always stun and, paired with chocolatebrown timber veneer and Caesarstone Cloudburst Concrete on the bench, it was a very strong contender. The oversized island bench almost had its own postcode, though the Queensland couple could have improved the functionality of the bench and added a few more stools – the more the merrier. This kitchen ticked a lot of boxes in terms of use, plenty of storage, stunning Neff appliances... and let’s take a minute to appreciate that automated overhead cabinetry – WOW! However, it’s not ideal to have the butler’s pantry sharing real estate with the laundry; for a home of this calibre, you’d expect separate spaces. While the artworks provide a muchneeded splash of colour, what the space needed more than anything was an upgrade on the round matt-black pendant light they used. Something superoversized and commanding to match the scale of the giant island bench could have really put the cherry on the cake, and it’s a missed opportunity that I bet Tess and Luke are kicking themselves over.

After pulling the emergency lever and
bringing in a flood of trades to push their kitchen over the line, Andy and Deb from country NSW created the ultimate communal hub. Their grand yet warm and family-friendly design has the judges (and the rest of us) with our jaws on the floor. Natural light pours onto the island bench from the six overhead skylights (thanks sponsors) and makes it the hero of the room. V-groove panelling in the void draws the eye up into the skylights, and it’s one of the most effective changes to the architects’ plans to date, considering the roof of the building is three floors up and it was a feat just to finish. White stone benchtops and Shaker cabinetry paired with brass fixtures and natural timber features give the kitchen plenty of heart and an instant sense of homeliness. The dual oven and microwave stacked horizontally (instead of a block of four) stretches the room and the colourmatched kickboards give the kitchen a classic and humble aesthetic. The combined butler’s pantry/laundry is set out and styled exquisitely and in harmony with the adjacent space. With half a point shy of a perfect score, this is the space that could win it for Andy and Deb.
El’ise & Matt House 4 23.5/30
Budget-blowing Matt and El’ise delivered
a visual masterpiece with their kitchen but were pulled up on a few functionality issues. The overall palette is warm and contemporary yet still reflects the heritage of the building, and the room’s stone/sage cabinetry with sleek black fittings looks incredible paired with the rustic industrial concrete benchtop. Lining up Bosch appliances and a timber niche create length in the room, and the Gaggenau fridges would woo any
buyer. The hardwood floors are a huge asset to the apartment, and the green olive velvet bar stools steal the show. What doesn’t work, though, is the overlapping of the Caesarstone-clad rangehood and row of black pendant lights – they seem to fight for the space they’re in. A pop-up extraction in the benchtop would have given Matt and El’ise a better score. Functionality saw them trip again with lack of bench space and the WA couple scrambled for 5th place.

Broke but still as confident as ever, the
only local couple delivered a functional and inviting space kitted out with chocolate timber cabinetry and white marble stone benchtops. Surprisingly, the dark timber tones used on the cabinets work well with the lighter chevron oak floor, which is enough of a contrast to pair the two timber tones. Though prone to marks and dirt, mirrored kickboards give the kitchen a sense of levitation while the black chord-covered stools lend the space its only touch of texture. And texture is what this kitchen needs more of, to bring tactility and a sense of homeliness. A dedicated butler’s pantry provides more storage and utility, but (I hate to be picky) it does seem a bit tight. In addition, the polished-brass LED pendant light sitting above the marble island almost seems too flimsy above such a commanding benchtop. Jesse and Mel did a great job, but more is needed in this kitchen to really put a bow on the space before auction.

The best-dressed windows combine looks and functionality – here’s everything you need to know to choose well

cutting your energy costs – a great window treatment can do it all. It’s also the perfect way to finish off a room. “A fabulous window treatment is just as important an investment as a sofa – it can totally transform a room and bring the overall design scheme together,” says Elise Harper, interior decorator at More Than Curtains. With so many options to choose from – curtains, various types of blinds, and plantation shutters, just to name a few – it’s important to consider your needs. Ask yourself these questions before making any decisions: Are you looking for privacy from neighbours or a busy street? Do you need full light control? Insulation? Acoustic control? Do you have young children and/or pets and require a fabric that’s easy to clean? Read on…
SOFT TOUCH Need privacy but don't want to block out light? Go for sheer, floaty curtains in a natural fabric such as cotton or linen.

“Curtains are the best window treatment for energy efficiency as they completely wrap the window, preventing cold from the windows entering the room in winter and keeping the heat out in summer,” says Frances Cosway, head designer at White Pebble Interiors. And they’re not just for traditional homes, adds designer Gabrielle Reinhardt at Berkeley Interiors. “Curtains in natural linens in shades of soft grey and muted pastels look contemporary and add a gentle softness to a space. Meanwhile, for a cosy bedroom or sitting room, nothing compares with luxe velvet curtains.” If you want the flexibility to have softness during the day and full light control at night, consider a layered window treatment. “It gives you the best of both worlds,” says Lucia van Gerwen, interior designer at More Than Curtains. “I’ll often specify blockout roller blinds for privacy and light control combined with sheers in front for ambience.”

The heading style of your curtains – the way they’re sewn at the top – affects how they fall. This determines how they look in a room, and how compactly they stack when opened. The main options are: S-fold A sleek, casual and contemporary style with no pleating. The fabrics folds in an ‘S’ formation in front and behind the track. This style tends to require more stacking room than other heading styles. Inverted box pleat A tailored look with a flat pleat. There is very little bulk to this style and it tends to be quite low-key and understated, making it suitable for both traditional and contemporary homes. Pinch pleat A double- or triple-pinch pleat is better suited to classic interiors. The bulk of the pleat is at the front of the heading with two or three neatly pinched folds 100mm from the top of the curtain. Euro pleat This updated version of the pinch pleat has a more informal feel.
The pinch is at the top of the heading rather than lower down, making it a great option to showcase a large-scale pattern or print. Both Euro and pinch pleats look spectacular on rods with rings. Pencil pleat A pencil-pleat heading is achieved by sewing heading tape onto a flat curtain and pulling the string until a gather appears. It has a much more relaxed, unstructured feel.

There are no hard and fast rules on the correct curtain length – it really comes down to personal preference. “Many designers like to specify curtains so they’re overlong or ‘puddling’ on the floor. This looks very elegant but can be a highmaintenance option if installed on tiled, timber or laminate floors because they
drag on the surface and can gather dirt and dust on the hems,” says Elise. An ideal curtain length, she says, is 10 millimetres off the floor. “This creates a neat look and holds its shape well.”

“The best spot to hang a curtain rod depends on your window and the height of the ceiling,” says Elise. “In older homes with lower ceilings, I like to install rods just below the cornice to give the illusion of height. In newer homes with higher ceilings, you can hang them anywhere you like, whether it’s just above the architrave (the moulding at the top of the window), halfway between the architrave and the ceiling or under the cornice. But never below the architrave – this is a dead giveaway of a bad DIY job.” INSIDE OUT | 143
HIDE AND SEEK Hidden or ceiling-mounted curtain tracks create a sense of height and drama. They’re also practical if there’s little or no wall space above a window or door.

ROLL UP Roller blinds are an affordable, fuss-free option for any room. They are available in various colours and fabrics.

Roller blinds are the most popular choice for Australian homes as they’re easy to operate, take up very little space, come in a huge range of fabrics and are easily motorised. Roller blinds give you complete privacy when closed and can effectively block out the light, particularly if you choose a blockout fabric. Their fuss-free look makes them a great fit for contemporary homes, says Frances. “They’re modern and streamlined, and have a clean aesthetic. They’re also versatile enough to be used in any room and work well with other window treatments, such as curtains and sheers. But they’re not ideal for ‘dressing’ a window. In that case, a roman blind would be more suitable.” If you’re looking to cut your heat and cooling costs, you might consider a roller blind in an energy-efficient honeycomb fabric (also known as cellular fabric). This high-performance fabric is made of honeycomb-shaped cells that trap air to help regulate your indoor air temperature.
For a soft, sophisticated look, consider roman blinds. They’re ideal for larger windows and come in all manner of fabrics and textures. “Roman blinds are a little more formal than roller blinds, and are often made in feature fabric to add impact to a room scheme. A roman blind in a statement print can bring so much personality to a room,” says Frances. “You can also add lovely trims for extra colour and interest,” adds Gabrielle. Roman blinds are a great choice for traditional and period homes. “Installed in the window reveal, they can showcase beautiful heritage architraves. They are also suitable for windows with furniture below them as they don’t protrude beyond the window,” says Elise. Roman blinds are a smart option for small rooms as they don’t take up space on either side of the window. Bear in mind that when roman blinds are up, your window will be completely exposed, so it’s best not to install them in rooms where privacy is paramount.
Love the idea of opening or closing your blinds or curtains at the touch of a button or from your smart phone? If so, consider automating your window treatments. “One of the reasons why automation has skyrocketed is the quality of lithium rechargeable batteries. That means roller blinds, roman blinds and vision blinds [a twin-layer design that gives more control over light or privacy] can now be motorised affordably,” says Amelia Taylor, head of product and communications at Wynstan. “Trudging around the house opening and closing each blind or awning is enough to make anyone cranky,” adds Amelia. “Our system is called Wynmotion and uses state-of-the-art smart motors to connect to any of our remotes or a smart home system.” Automating window treatments is also a clever way to eliminate unsightly cords and chains, and makes operating hard-to-reach windows a breeze.

For an affordable, low-maintenance and easy-to-install window covering, venetians are hard to beat. They’re generally made from timber, aluminium or PVC, and can be tilted to provide privacy or capture light and breezes. Timber venetians can be used throughout the home, while aluminium and PVC are suitable for wet areas. “Venetian blinds are a more casual window treatment,” says Frances. “They’re fine to use in a living room or wet room, but as they don’t provide complete light block 146 | INSIDE OUT
out, they’re not suitable for bedrooms. Also be aware that venetian blinds provide minimal insulation from heat and cold and, like plantation shutters, do not allow as much light into a room as other treatments.” Slat widths come in a range of sizes. “We offer 46mm, 60mm and 85mm sizes in our custom-painted and stained cedar venetian ranges,” says Simon. “The 85mm size can give you the look of plantation shutters without the price tag.” Blinds by Peter Meyer also offers polystyrene venetians, which gives you the look of real timber for less, in a material that’s 15 per cent lighter than PVC to accommodate larger window sizes. Now, with your windows fashionably (and practically) dressed, all eyes will be drawn to the view inside your home as much as the one on the outside.
DOUBLE DUTY In bedrooms and living areas, consider layering window treatments so you have plenty of light control. Shutters or roller blinds and curtains complement each other well.

If you’re looking for a casual coastal look, plantation shutters are the way to go. They’re also unlikely to date. “This style is practical, too – you can angle the blades for privacy while capturing light and breezes,” says Gabrielle. On the downside, they’re not great insulators and do have light bleed. However, “They can reduce floor space in floor-to-ceiling applications as they require a frame installed. Plus the frame blocks some of the light,” says Frances. Plantation shutters come in various materials, including timber and PVC, which can be painted to match your interior. PVC is more affordable than timber, and better for wet rooms. Quality varies, so don’t automatically go for the cheapest quote. “Shutters will be on your window longer than a normal blind so it’s worth spending more to get a product that will last,” says Simon Meyer, managing director at Blinds by Peter Meyer and Weinor Australia. Be wary of shutters being marketed as timber that are in fact timber veneer with a less-thandesirable MDF core.

his light and airy garden in Sydney’s
inner west rolls up its sleeves and works hard. With not a centimetre wasted, it perfectly responds to the needs of the active young family in residence. But it wasn’t always that way. When the owners bought the Federation property in 2009, the front garden was a “rabble” of random plantings – a jungle blocking light from the house – while the rear was a mishmash of levels. While planning renovations on their home in 2014, the couple, who have three young children, hired Andrew Pearce of Andrew Pearce Landscape Design to revitalise the garden. “What first struck me was the huge space at the front,” he says. “Typically, homes in the area are set back about six metres, whereas this home was close to 40 metres.” But that frontage was squandered by a driveway that sliced it in two and was cloaked in vegetation, a “wasted opportunity”. At the rear, the house felt disjointed from the garden due to its higher elevation, while a steep four-metre escarpment added to the squeezed-in feeling. “We wanted a low-maintenance garden, with generous areas for the kids to kick balls, play or just sit in the shade,” says the owner. “We especially wanted to make use of the space at the front and create a sense of entry.” They also wanted swathes of flowers, such as magnolias and gardenias, which could be cut for display in their newly renovated home. The Federation facade and contemporary addition on the back set the tone for Andrew’s layout, which includes a soft plant-based front garden with a sprawling lawn, and a hardscape outdoor room overlooking lawn at the rear. To begin with, Andrew and his installers, Custom Creations Landscapes, cleared the front yard, leaving only a large weeping lilly pilly tree and a camphor laurel. “The transformation was amazing,” says Andrew. “The additional light and space made that hope for growing flowers more achievable.” Meanwhile, he shifted the driveway to the side and bordered it with an avenue of pear trees, which offers privacy and lends formality to the drive. But the real bonus was the creation of a vast 140 square metres of open lawn, alongside a pedestrian entry screened by a lilly pilly hedge. The cobblestone parking bay is edged with layered mixed plantings to complement the heritage facade. These include flowering species such as rosemary, lavender and Helichrysum, and succulents such as jade plants, kalanchoes and agaves. Buxus balls and Miscanthus grasses occupy the shadier areas. For height and verticality, Andrew says he added deciduous trees, such as Japanese maple, as well as tulip and star magnolias, to “frame the house, provide seasonal foliage and flowers, and allow extra light during winter”. In the back garden, his challenges were to disguise the escarpment at the rear, screen off neighbouring properties and create unity between the levels.

An extensive outdoor room was constructed level with the house, consisting of barbecue, dining and sitting areas immediately abutting a pool and outdoor shower. Meanwhile, the lawn and garden below were partially raised so they were closer to the upper level. A window in the pool wall looks out to the lower garden, creating another layer of interest. To soften the brick and steel addition, Andrew added vertical timber-slat screening as a backdrop to the barbecue and shower areas. “This highlights the cantilevered bench and sleek barbecue and breaks up the viburnum hedge,” he explains. “Meanwhile, the built-in timber seat doubles as storage for pool equipment.” Throughout the back garden, tall plantings of Crimson Sentry maple, purple birch and tulip magnolias are underplanted with rosemary, Carissa macrocarpa ‘Emerald Carpet’ and Raphiolepis ‘Oriental Pearl’, while species at the front are repeated for continuity, such as clipped buxus, kalanchoes, jade plants and Miscanthus. “I love the mix of foliage colours and textures,” says Andrew. “All are interesting species and perfect for separating areas and softening hard surfaces.” Above the escarpment, an area tricky to access, he opted for low-maintenance grasses, with cascades of pigface to soften the rock face. “I love looking out the back at the sandstone wall and the way Andrew has made it a feature,” says the owner. “The kids enjoy the timber-slatted area, which draws them outside a lot. In summer, they will be in the pool or kicking balls in the backyard.” What’s more, the owner says his family eats most of their meals outside or with the doors wide open to the garden: “It constantly interacts with our daily routine.” Andrew Pearce Landscape Design is based in Cremorne, NSW; 0411 073 293 or apld.com.au. You’ve created a lovely correlation between interiors and food. Can you tell us about the importance of them working together?
“The umbrella of the home is really where I developed my passion and skill set surrounding food and design in my mid-late 20s. I was a young mum who didn’t have a ‘successful’ career at the time and cooking became my artistic expression, my creative outlet. I also began entertaining, luring friends into my homes, which I proudly designed, and it became a way for me to stay connected, giving me a social outlet. For me, food and design have always worked in tandem – they both engage the senses and create a mood, a feeling, through non-verbal expression.” What food ends up on your family table? “Definitely seasonal and locally sourced but Mediterranean inspired. I love simple cooking techniques but bold, robust flavours. I love acid, so lots of lemon. Heat – I always engage a chilli of some kind. And briny flavours, so a caper or olive often makes its way in. I also love the crunch of a nut and the unexpected sweetness of fruit in savoury dishes.” INSIDE OUT | 159
If you’re cooking for yourself at home, what would you throw together? “A whole roasted chicken with a ton of veggies, garlic,

and lemon. One-stop meal. I also love a clean-out-of-the-fridge pasta using any and all veggies I have on hand.”

When you created the kitchen in your home, what were your priorities? “I wanted the kitchen to be a tableau for sharing all

That said, a long shelf that houses elements like a vintage mirror or a delicate French table lamp is also practical as it holds the servingware and glassware I need at arm’s reach. Also, the kitchen island was an area that I needed to be large and unobstructed since I shoot cooking content regularly.” Can you share your essential piece of kitchen equipment?
“I could not live without a mandolin and a sharp knife!” You’ve embraced new media and have expanded your business in a very clever way. How do you make things happen? “Thank
you! I am figuring it out day by day. What’s great is that I work from home so I always see my family. My business began through family and they are always an integral part of the process – they inspired the process. I started a newish series on my Instagram stories called EyeSwoon Unplugged, which really began as a way for me to document myself cooking for my family in real time. Nothing too curated, no fancy props, just me cooking a meal for my husband and son. What’s fun is that I share mistakes and sometimes you can even see me get tipsy along the way.” Any table-setting tips you love right now? “I love to forage in my own backyard. You should be inspired by the palette of the season and the nature around you – clip branches or herbs to style your table, for example. Beautiful design does not need to be expensive or precious.” What’s next for you? “I’m working on a tabletop and entertaining collection, followed by a furniture and decor collection. And my design book, Live Beautiful, is coming out in March 2020!” 160 | INSIDE OUT

Flatbread, lightly grilled Tzatziki Roughly chopped or torn fresh herbs such as parsley, mint and dill 1 In a small bowl, pour the hot milk over the bulgur and cover with plastic wrap. Let it stand for 15 to 20 minutes to soften. 2 Combine the remaining ingredients in a large bowl, reserving 2 tablespoons of the pine nuts for the garnish. Add the soaked bulgur along with its excess milk, and mix to combine. Shape the mixture into oval meatballs about the size of a small egg. 3 Preheat a grill over medium-high heat. Grill the meatballs in batches until cooked through and lightly charred, about 12 minutes. 4 Serve the meatballs with warm flatbread, tzatziki, plenty of fresh herbs and the reserved pine nuts.

1 To make the brittle, line a baking sheet with baking paper and spray with oil. Place the sugar, honey, corn syrup and 3 tablespoons water in a medium saucepan. Measure the remaining ingredients into a bowl and place next to the stovetop along with an oiled, heatproof spatula. 2 Place the saucepan over medium heat, swirling it occasionally to help dissolve the sugar. 3 Fit a candy thermometer on the side of the saucepan and cook the sugar syrup over medium heat until the caramel reaches 150°C, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Quickly stir in the pistachios, butter, salt and baking soda until just combined. 4 Pour the caramel mixture onto the baking paper and spread it with the oiled spatula so the brittle is about 6mm thick. Sprinkle the surface with sea salt. Set aside and let it cool completely. Break brittle into small, bite-size pieces and store them at room temperature in an airtight container, with the layers separated by baking paper to prevent sticking, until ready to serve. 5 To make the whipped crème fraîche, in the bowl of a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the cream, sugar and vanilla extract until medium-stiff peaks form. Add the crème fraîche and salt and whip to combine. Refrigerate until ready to serve. The whipped crème fraîche will keep for a few hours; if it loses its body, you can whip it again before serving. 6 To cook the plums, heat a chargrill pan or barbecue to medium heat. In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, lemon zest and thyme. 7 Lightly brush the cut sides of the plums with oil and sprinkle them with the sugar mixture. Place the plums cut-side down on the chargrill and cook until lightly charred and caramelised, 4 to 5 minutes. Then flip and cook until tender, another 3 to 4 minutes. 8 Place the grilled plums on a serving platter. Top with the whipped crème fraîche and crumbled brittle.
grilled rib-eye with burst tomatoes and chimichurri SERVES 4
2 boneless rib-eye steaks, about 4 cm thick, left at room temperature for 1 hour before cooking Salt and freshly cracked pepper 2 stems on-the-vine cherry tomatoes (about 10 tomatoes per vine) Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling, plus extra for cooking Chimichurri (see recipe below), for serving 1 Preheat a barbecue grill to high heat. Season steaks with salt and pepper. Grill steaks for 6 to 7 minutes per side for medium-rare. 2 While the steaks are cooking, place the tomatoes in a cast-iron pan, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 3 When you flip your steaks, place the cast-iron pan on the barbecue. Cook until the tomatoes have just begun to burst, 7 to 8 minutes. 4 Let the steak rest for 5 minutes before serving with the burst tomatoes and chimichurri sauce on the side.
1 lemon, zested and juiced ¼ teaspoon minced habanero chilli 1 small shallot, finely chopped ½ cup fresh coriander, finely chopped ½ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped ¼ cup rocket, finely chopped Freshly cracked pepper 1 Using a mortar and pestle, mash the garlic and salt to a paste. 2 In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, lemon zest and juice, habanero chilli and chopped shallot. Stir in the garlic paste and remaining herbs. Season with pepper.

225g burrata 2 ripe peaches, halved and thinly sliced 1 cup (40g) torn fresh basil ¼ cup (25g) pickled shallots (see recipe below), plus 1 to 2 tablespoons of pickling liquid 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 lime Flaky sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, for serving 1 Roughly tear the burrata, pulling it apart at the centre, and arrange on a plate. Top with the peaches, basil and pickled shallots. 2 Drizzle with the oil and pickling liquid. Season with flaky sea salt and pepper and finish by zesting the lime directly over the top. PICKLED SHALLOTS
MAKES 1 cup
3 medium shallots, thinly sliced ⅓ cup (75ml) white-wine vinegar 1½ tablespoons caster sugar 1½ tablespoons salt 1 red chilli, minced (optional) 1 Place the shallots in a small bowl. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, bring the vinegar, sugar, salt and chilli (if using) to a simmer, swirling the pan to help the sugar dissolve. 2 Pour the pickling liquid over the shallots and let them cool to room temperature. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Before you hit the shops for that new couch or dining table, you should spend some time planning and working out what your personal style is. Ensure that you are realistic about the renovation in that it is for your ‘real life’ not your ‘ideal’ one. Time to budget!
Renovating is an investment so be honest about how much you can afford. Be sure to update your budget accordingly as things progress so you can keep track of spendings. Remember that anything outside the ordinary (custom builds) will cost twice as much, so be sure to consider this when setting your budget. Also remember that you don’t always need to choose the most expensive items. For example, if you are looking at new carpet and want the ultimate in comfort, on a modest budget, add a superior underlay to a mid-price carpet and you will get the same feel and comfort for less.

The ultimate wish list
Now that you have a budget finalised start separating your wish list into two categories – ’Must Have’ and ‘Nice to Have’. This will be helpful if you need to cut your costs further down the line. Be sure to consider existing items that you can re-use or re-purpose.

FOR SMALL SPACES If you’re working with a small space, the selection of flooring is a crucial decision as certain colours and styles may make your space appear even smaller.
It may be surprising to learn that dark flooring can actually help make your room look bigger. Dark flooring paired with light walls can help open up the space and add contrast.
It is recommended you keep the same flooring throughout your space as this will create an uninterrupted flow and make it feel as if the room is part of a larger zone.
With regards to installation, a general rule of thumb is to have hard flooring installed parallel to the longest wall in the room; this will instantly make your room appear more spacious.
When it comes to colour, generally lighter coloured flooring will complement furniture and expand the perceived size of any room. Think cream carpet or whitewashed flooring and avoid busy patterns. If you’re thinking of purchasing hard flooring, opt for wide boards as you will see fewer joins and it will feel less busy.

Which carpet won’t show footprints?
If you are looking for a carpet that won’t show footprints, vacuum marks, or furniture indentations, twist and loop carpets are recommended. Unlike plush carpets (also referred to as cut pile) most twist and loop carpets show less of the velvet appearance. Twist carpets, particularly in a lighter tone, provide a consistent flat surface whilst loop carpets tend to show a textured appearance.

The best way to combat a noisy household is to choose carpet. Thick pile carpet and a dense underlay is very effective, although we cannot guarantee pure silence! Generally, a carpet that is over 40oz in weight is best in both quality and noise absorption. What to expect when redoing your floors with Choices Flooring.

Your sales consultant will assist you with this process and ensure you leave having found the floor you’ve been searching for. It is important to also check the pricing structure at your local store. Some Choices Flooring stores include extra services within their final prices to make the installation of your flooring easy. Once you have selected your flooring, an installer will come to your house to measure the rooms and determine whether there is any sub-flooring issues. This is a great time to ask any questions regarding the installation process and determine a timeline for the project to be completed. You should also enquire what furniture and items need to be moved out of the rooms prior to installation. Typically, you will be responsible for clearing everything out of the rooms before the installers arrive unless you arrange for items to be moved as part of the installation.

If you have selected hard flooring for your home, the product will need to be delivered, in a majority of cases, several days prior to installation so it can acclimatise to your home’s temperature and humidity levels before it is installed. If flooring is installed without first acclimating there will be a risk of cupping, shrinking and expanding. Prior to installation it is important to empty out the space, leaving clear paths for the installers. If this service is not included in your final invoice, you may want to consider the following: • Completely clear out each room and every closet that has clothing • Take down any artwork, mirrors and any decorative items • Disconnect all electronics, TV and Hi-Fi connections • Office desks or free standing storage • Empty the contents of china cabinets, draws, shelves that contains food, glass or other fragile items • Disengage all appliances • Tape plastic bags over heating vents (this will keep your air filters free of any dust), you may want to consult a ventilation professional to ensure everything will still work effectively.
Depending on the size of your home, most installations are completed within one or two days (your local Choices Flooring store can give you a better idea once they see a plan of your home).

The installer will often set up their equipment outside your home (weather permitting) to reduce the amount of dust. However, even with barrier systems in place, there will more than likely be missed layers of dust around your home. Depending on the type of flooring you’ve chosen there can be some strong odours from glues and adhesives. Children and pets are to be kept away from the area during installation, additionally there will be a fair amount of noise on-site, the best plan may be to avoid the site altogether for the duration of the installation. This way you'll be out of your installer’s way, and by the time you get back everything will ready to go.
