If you’re considering renovating your kitchen, check out this DIY magic makeover. Melissa and Alex call their new kitchen the masterpiece of their home. “We love our new kitchen especially that we were able to design and build it with a bit of help from our family this makes it really special for us.”

PLAN - What was your old kitchen like and why did you decide to renovate? “Our old kitchen was brown and outdated with a raised bar that blocked the traffic flow. We wanted to open up the space with a modern and sophisticated kitchen that connected with the dining and living areas.” - Alex SELECT - How did you choose your colour scheme? “Originally, we wanted a white kitchen as we don’t have much natural light in the space. But after some research, we decided that the shaker two-tone style really appealed. The navy and white colour combination instantly spoke to us. The navy tones of bluepea has a rich, luxurious feel to it while the white is clean, fresh and bright making the space appear even bigger. Together, we think it presents as a modern and classic look.” - Melissa

CREATE - How did you find the installation process? “It was challenging yet rewarding. We’d never installed anything before, let alone a kitchen, so it was a bit daunting at first but we used the printed instructions and kaboodle’s YouTube channel to help us through. Once we’d assembled a few cabinets, it got easier from there.” - Alex ENJOY - What do you like most about your new kitchen? “Definitely the functionality and the benchtop. We maximised the space by removing the raised bar that was in the original island to create a wider surface area on the new island benchtop, which now doubles as our breakfast bar. And the stone-inspired biancoccino laminate benchtop looks so sophisticated, adds a touch of luxe and works beautifully with the dark tones of the navy cabinetry.” - Melissa For more renovation stories visit kaboodle.com.au

“I found kaboodle’s planning tools really helpful.” - Melissa

hello Made up Inspiration can come from everywhere! Case in point, our decorating story, where each room is based on a make-up look. This one is quite neutral and heroes an amazing lamp from Insta-retailer @ukitu__ Flip to p16 to see more.

I’VE BEEN MEETING quite a few of you lovely readers lately – and coincidentally, too. One lady, I was seated across from at a dinner party. When we got talking about what we did for work, she professed her love for real living, then pulled a copy of the mag out of her bag to prove she wasn’t just being polite! Another was a charming sales assistant helping my friend select jewellery; she reached for her copy of real living from behind the display cabinet. I never get tired of meeting you all, and hearing about your decorating journeys. Speaking of which, this issue, we feature four amazing creative renovations in our homes section. They range from a 1960s apartment to a classic Victorian-era house, and have all been given thoroughly modern makeovers. What’s most exciting is that they’re all so different. If you’re looking to give your own home a bit (or a lot!) of a makeover, check out our best-in-store sofas (p94) complete with side tables and cushions to match, the latest flooring trends (p101) and our dream bathrooms special (p107). We’ve also created a fun guide to window furnishings to coincide with our new collaboration with Wynstan. It was brilliant pulling together our own collection with the Wynstan team. See what we picked on p91. Every month, the RL gals and I pour our hearts and souls into creating an inspiring magazine, and I just want to say thanks for reading it. And like the readers mentioned above, I hope I get to meet you one day, too.

A neutral scheme is both versatile and timeless, so your attention is drawn to colourful items, but the overall look is classic. modern glamour This look isn’t a full face of make-up, but a few key elements in high-voltage colours and lustrous finishes. In this case, a jewel-toned sofa, Art Deco-inspired mirror and geometric rug. To keep it ‘modern’, stick to polished or refined materials and use restraint when applying texture – layers of heavy fabrics will feel dated. Or ease into it with an eye-catching artwork, sculptural vessels or a sequined cushion. A real living

MODERN HIS T ORY

1972

from raves to riches text lindyl crabb | photography gray sorrenti, courtesy of loewe (opposite); courtesy of paula’s ibiza 25 years by armin heinemann (1972 image); jamie hawkesworth (2017 collection)

Luxury Spanish fashion house Loewe plus legendary Balearic boutique Paula’s Ibiza equals this season’s hottest design collab IN ITS HEYDAY, Ibiza was the free-loving flower child of the Mediterranean. Soul-searching misfits, disco denizens and bohemians flocked to the Spanish party island to dabble in spiritualism with a side of hedonism – and to shop at Paula’s. More than a clothing store, Paula’s was the holy grail for hippies in the ’70s and ’80s, famous for its floor-to-ceiling floral interiors, fabulous runway shows and the loose fitting, playfully printed garments it sold. Paula’s was founded by Armin Heinemann (a German expat who maintains he was roped into buying it), who, with co-founder Stuart Rudnick, employed local seamstresses and began making colourful prints inspired by everything from curtains to sea creatures. The design process was fraught with flaws, but their cheap and cheerful clothes found a cult following – Bianca Jagger, Freddie Mercury and Jean-Paul Gaultier all went to Paula’s. Slowly, bar-hopping backpackers replaced the free spirits, and in 2000, Paula’s closed. Then, 16 years later, Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Loewe, called Armin with a proposal to create a collaboration collection. Known for its luxury leather goods, Loewe had access to the best craftsmanship and would take care of logistics, while Armin contributed his inimitable bohemian style. Jonathan chose original prints from the Paula’s archive, including cartoonish beach motifs, and focused on silhouettes in fabrics that feel more laidback than Loewe’s signature designs. While the scent of patchouli at Paula’s has long faded, this hit collab is a worthy homage to the iconic store that started it all. R

Following the breakdown of his marriage, German architect Armin Heinemann moved to Ibiza and started Paula’s in 1972, along with co-founder Stuart Rudnick.

2015

In the summer of 2015, Loewe opened a pop-up shop at the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MACE) in Ibiza, which stocked the Spring/Summer 15 range.

2017

Loewe and Paula’s launched the first collab collection in 2017. It included bucket hats, bags, breezy dresses, silk scarves and espadrilles in sundrenched shades.

2019

This year, Loewe and Paula’s released a third mens’ and womenswear capsule. It features the Loewe Hammock bag (right) redesigned with raffia panels and drawstrings. real living

Changing rooms Simone uses the marble table, in the area that was previously the balcony, as a styling surface. The vintage dining chairs are from Angelucci 20th Century and Simone had the light shade custom made based on one she saw overseas. Living large Sarah Reid at S R & O custom-designed the rattan cabinetry (opposite), while the artworks are a combination of op-shop ďŹ nds and pieces by the likes of Erin Armstrong and Sam Shmith. Planters by Den Holm.

LIKE MANY FIRST-HOME BUYERS, Simone Haag and her husband Rhys had plans to buy a house, renovate, sell and repeat. They bought their mid-century property in Melbourne’s outer east in 2011 and gave it “about five coats” of fresh paint, put in a new kitchen and bathroom and furnished it on a newlyweds’ budget. With plans of starting a family, it was inevitable they would need a bigger place, but the home’s views of the Dandenongs and family-friendly location made them reluctant to sell. “Our connection to this space was so strong we decided to extend instead,” Simone says. LIGHTBULB MOMENT The couple asked Melbourne architecture firm Kennedy Nolan to consult on ways to achieve maximum space without too much intervention. Rhys had the idea of enclosing the balcony to create a larger living room, which provided extra space for a custom rattan unit (where the TV pops up) and a magnificent marble table positioned to soak up those views. Elsewhere, the couple created a master suite with wardrobe and ensuite, as well as access to a raised deck. “I call the deck my Zen deck and have dreams of meditations out there,” says the mother-of-three. FAMILY FLAVOUR Simone worked with Haymes Paint to establish her home’s colour palette, opting for Charcoal Grey on the panelled walls and Night Moves in the master suite. As for filling all that extra space, “Rhys was very encouraging of me refreshing the space with new pieces of furniture and objects, so that’s exactly what I did!” Simone says. “I found myself opting for more unusual pieces, generally with a vintage Italian sensibility.” But above all, the couple have created a place for the family to retreat and relax. “In winter, Rhys lights a fire most nights. In summer, the doors are swung open and we’ll have a gin on the outdoor benchseat overlooking the garden.” That “For Sale” sign seems a long way off yet. R

Playing favourites This vintage artwork is one of Simone’s favourite pieces. “I was in a cab on the way to the airport and spotted it while at a traffic light. I had the cab pull over and made them an offer,” she tells. It’s in good company alongside a Foscarini ‘Buds’ lamp from Space, Troika vase from Etsy store Mid Mod Mom and a Nicolette Johnson vase. Dish it up The separate dining room (opposite) features a long table from Hay and chairs from Smith Street Bazaar. Artwork by Paul Ryan from James Makin Gallery. A

On show String shelves from Great Dane house Simone’s collection of ceramics. “In the absence of storage everything is on display,” she says. What’s in store The ensuite’s clever cabinetry by Sarah Reid provides plenty of storage in a small space. The mirror, sink and stand are from Ex.t and the tiles are Artedomus. Cook’s nook Kitchen cabinets (opposite) were custom made to match the wall panels, with the doors painted Haymes Organic 1 white. Simple roman blinds let in plenty of light.

style tip Maximise space in a small bedroom by utilising the walls for artworks, lamps and a shelf for favourite belongings

In the mood Simone wanted to create a fun but moody feeling in the master bedroom. Dark walls work as a backdrop for warm metallics, quirky sculptures and a vibrant green bedspread. The bedlinen is from Abode Living, with shelves holding objects including a Nicholas & Alistair lamp, Jane McKenzie ceramic and Curtis Jere sculpture.

AFTER MOVING TO SYDNEY from London with their two children, furniture and space designer Olivia Bossy and her husband Joe Mount immediately saw potential in a tiny seaside apartment in Freshwater on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. “It fit into the vision I had of a family beach pad with a modernist vibe,” Olivia explains. “It was very ’60s, and not in the best way – it had mauve walls, and it felt really small.” MODERNIST MANIFESTO Not surprisingly, those mauve walls were the first feature to go when the couple gutted their 51-square-metre home in 2017. Olivia redesigned it as an homage to modernism and took cues from artist Georgia O’Keefe’s Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, USA, and designer Eileen Gray’s E1027 villa in the French Riviera. “She managed to balance the harshness of modernism with such soft, luxurious upholstery and fabrics, and that was a major inspiration,” Olivia says of Eileen’s home. TEXTURAL TUNE Bathed in natural light, the interiors are a study in texture and tone. “I usually only pick a few textures and repeat them in small spaces to create a rhythm,” she says. Tactile, translucent rattan cabinets soften the space and echo the home’s sandy hues. Olivia plastered the walls for soft texture instead of painting them, and eschewed freestanding furniture in favour of sculptural, built-in elements. OLD MEETS NEW The interior sets the stage for modernist classics and Olivia’s own furniture designs, which she likes to mix with a treasure trove of op-shop finds. “I like quirky little objects,” she says. “It’s nice to have a mixture. Every so often I’ll invest in a beautiful piece.” The designer credits Joe for her penchant for the pre-loved pieces that pepper their place. “He’s been a big influence in appreciating the old,” she says. “My love of vintage items and reusing objects definitely comes from him.” R

Retro rattan “I didn’t want it to look too kitcheny,” Olivia says of the open-plan kitchen and dining area with a rattan pantry. Above it is a photo of Olivia’s father, an architect. “He’s a massive inspiration,” she says. “That’s where my love of curves and natural materials comes from.” New life The dracaena (opposite) is a cutting from her grandmother’s plant.

Fluid form The curved shower wall brings a graceful, sculptural presence to the living space. Curtain call Olivia used material from a fabric store for the curtains, which pool in voluptuous folds on the living room floor. She chose Winckelmans white porcelain encaustic tiles from Eco-Tile Factory for her home’s flooring.

Centre stage This oak 2712 Roll on Bed was designed by Olivia. “We bought some vintage linen sheets in the south of France to use as tablecloths at our wedding, and they’re now our bedlinen,” she adds. The custom rattan wardrobe creates a textural backdrop for the black Zangra sconce.

“I don’t think you need many objects to make a beautiful space; it’s about choosing the right things for it”

Take a seat Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s ‘S 533’ chair pairs perfectly with Eileen Gray’s Roattino floor lamp for ClassiCon, both from Anibou. The Stump desk is Olivia’s design. Modern match “I spent about three months trying to source the Eco-Tile Factory floor tiles; there’s a very specific size that modernists used,” she says (top left). Curated corner The curved shelf (bottom left) is a handy spot for displaying art books, magazines and vases. A real living

57

Set in stone In the bedroom, a built-in plinth and ledge replace the traditional bedsides and headboard. The lamp is from Original BTC. “I used to do work for department store John Lewis. They held crazy sales of floor stock – I managed to swipe this one!” Olivia says.

Seat selection An assortment of designer chairs from different eras flank the long oak dining table (opposite), while two leather bar stools from Rabens Saloner were chosen for their comfort. “We often sit at the bar to eat, or our guests hang out here while we’re cooking, so comfort was important,” says Johanna. Sheer pink curtains add to the cosy vibes.

YELLOW FLOORS, PINK WALLS and exuberant artworks – welcome to the colourful home of Mads and Johanna Rosén! Situated in the sprawling neighbourhood of Østerbro in Copenhagen, the 120-year-old apartment underwent a complete reshuffle when the couple first took ownership. LET THERE BE LIGHT To make better use of the available light, they gave the open-plan kitchen and dining area prime position up the front, facing the street. “Before the conversion, our daughter’s bedroom received all of the beautiful light,” says Johanna. “And with the kitchen placed up the far end, whoever did the cooking was essentially cut off from the rest of the flat.” Conscious of creating a space that fostered a connection with their two daughters Freja and Ella, she and Mads added a hallway that runs from one end of the property to the other and openings in the walls so they can talk to each other from different rooms. DREAMY DECOR The home’s interior consists of a beautiful mix of furniture from Rabens Saloner, Murano glass lamps and retro pieces sourced from flea markets. Mads takes great pleasure in selecting all the artworks, while Johanna was behind the joyful colour scheme of delicate pink, warm yellow and pastel ice blue. “The yellow colour of the floors always makes me smile and it looks insanely beautiful against the pink,” she explains. Dotted throughout are little touches inspired by family holidays, such as the marble wall tiles in the kitchen, similar to those admired in a cafe in Bali. “Where possible, we chose good quality and delicate natural materials that will age well with use,” Johanna tells. “But we also like our home to feel lived in, so if a spot appears on the countertop, it just adds to the character.” R

Deck the halls Lamps hung just below the ceiling emphasise the hallway’s generous height, while paintings by Martin Easter (left) and Ryan Schneider (right) are a reflection of Mads’ love of art. Bali high Johanna and Mads wanted the bathroom floor (opposite) to feel like walking on a pebble beach, and found the small round marble tiles in Bali. “We love when we can bring just a little of our holiday mood back home,” she says.

Frames and foliage Homeowners Liza and Matthew Giles replaced the original wooden floorboards, which were worn from age and neglect, with patterned vintage tiles from Bert & May. The ornate mirror and console in the hallway are from Sunbury Antiques Market. Blanc canvas “The white walls create a calm background for the art,” Liza says of her double-fronted Victorian-era home’s scheme. She painted the artwork that hangs in the hallway (opposite). A

Plant kingdom “We wanted this house to feel stylish and fresh, but also warm, calm and friendly,” says Liza. She chose low-lying furniture and hung artworks low on the walls, “to give the room a relaxed, intimate feel when you’re sitting down”. Take this living area furnished with two sofas – a Cappellini ‘Elan’ and one from Designers Guild – a Tulip coffee table and Diamond chairs from Knoll. The chandelier is a 1960s design from Alfies Antique Market in London, while Liza made the cushions from grain sacks found at Sunbury Market.

who lives here? Liza Giles, an artist and former interior art director, with her husband Matthew, an architect, and their sons Elwood, 9, and Arlo, 7. Lizagiles.com | @liza.giles.art A

ARE YOU THINKING what we’re thinking? How did they acquire so many plants? Well, when you’ve spent 18 years styling photo shoots, it’s not unusual to bring your work home. “Years ago I used a huge amount of plants on an interiors shoot and afterwards I took them with me,” says homeowner Liza Giles. “Now I can’t live without them!” It’s Liza’s intuitive personal style that makes her London home, which she bought with her husband Matthew seven years ago, a refreshing place to be, even with two young boys under the same roof. LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR Finding their dream home wasn’t hard. “We lived next door, in a typical Victorian house,” explains Liza. “We loved the area but wanted a double-fronted property to gain more lateral space, which is hard to come by in London.” Exposed to the afternoon sun, the west-facing garden was a drawcard, as were the high ceilings. It was also rundown, which “was perfect, we love a project”. They restored the original features and made the most of the extra width and sunlight by redesigning the layout with three-metrewide door openings, which create flowing vistas. CREATIVE SPACE While Matthew spearheaded the reno, Liza naturally took to styling the interiors. “I love contrasting modern furniture with vintage pieces and layering different fabrics and surfaces,” she says of the harmoniously textural spaces. “I mix expensive pieces with inexpensive items. We’re not precious – we have two energetic boys.” As well as the abundant greenery, art plays a special role here and for Liza, who is now a full-time painter. Her studio “is on the top floor in the eves, with lots of good light,” she says. “The best part is I can make a mess and then just shut the door!” R

Soul purpose “I’ve always been a maker and painter. It’s my outlet; like being lost in a good book,” says Liza, pictured. “I’m addicted to green – as you can see. My favourite painting at the moment is the green work in my living room above the bookshelves.” Sunny side When the late sun pours in through the living room windows (opposite), Liza says “being surrounded by a waterfall of plants makes me feel like it’s always spring.” Ferm Living pendants hang above a patchwork of vintage rugs; the floor lamp is a Serge Mouille design. style-conscious storage solutions

1

Wondering where the kids’ stuff is kept? The boys have a play area with custom joinery built into the walls, so it’s invisible when not in use and there’s no need for overflowing shelves or bulky cupboards.

Palette cleanser White floorboards and a deep C.P. Hart tub with Vola tapware evokes a meditative mood in the bathroom. Colour comes from the foot stool, bathmat and green glass bottles collected from Sunbury Market and all over Paris. Grand entrance The couple have made a feature of the entry hallway with the addition of eye-catching floor tiles, an ornate mirror and plants galore. “They’re cheaper than a bunch of flowers, so if one or two die I replace them!”

@reallivingmag

76

2

Streamlined shelves custom-built around the living room walls function as a library for tomes of all sizes, and because they sit low on the wall, they work as a border and visual platform for the artworks above.

3

Storage doesn’t have to be strictly practical. In the bathroom and kitchen, Liza displays her glass vessels and indoor plants on the floating shelves, while functional items like soap and toothbrushes are kept hidden. A

Period pieces Liza and Matthew reinstated the home’s 19th century Victorian plasterwork, and in the kitchen, custom joinery by Daulby and Tickle turns these ornate details into a focal point. The elegant chandelier from Sunbury Market illuminates the Carrara marble island, with artworks from a trip to India and green Hay stools.

77

Beautifully composed Uncluttered floating shelves bestow a sense of ease in the bedroom while a rug from a trip to Morocco creates texture from the floor up. The Bertoia chair is from Ardingly Fair. Liza says her skill for finding vintage pieces comes from “years of prop sourcing. Sunbury and Ardingly antique fairs have an amazing array of Parisian artifacts, Danish mid-century furniture and industrial objects.”

round about In a raw and imposing space such as this, softness is key, and can be achieved without resorting to the usual cushions and throws. The rounded shape of this mirror, er, mirrors the curves in the ceiling, with the circular theme continuing in the furniture, lights, door handles, even the kitchen island.

Rough finish The walls, ceiling, staircase balustrade and mezzanine balcony are all hand-rendered with a custom Porter’s Paints French Wash finish. A citrus-hued Fogia ‘Bollo’ armchair from Fred International adds a pop of colour. Right angles An arched mirror propped against the wall softens the Brutalist aesthetic. Sleep well American oak floors and cabinetry and wool carpets make for a cosy bedroom (opposite).

DECORATING PRESENTS ITSELF IN MANY WAYS. There’s the traditional approach, where ornamental objects like vases, artworks, cushions and books are used to create your preferred aesthetic or look. Or there’s the more subtle approach, where decor is restrained and pragmatic, chosen as a functional supporting act to the surrounding architectural features. This sparse and spectacular apartment in Sydney’s Camperdown is the perfect illustration of this less-is-more technique. Owners Sam and Louise O’Flattery engaged designer Matt Woods from Killing Matt Woods to oversee its transformation, giving him the simple brief of “a minimalist lifestyle with an interior to match”. The property was stripped back to its bare essentials to create a “utilitarian, cave-like sanctuary” inspired by the mid-century Brutalist era. Concrete-like surfaces and muted hues and materials create a dark and brooding atmosphere, but look closely and you’ll find carefully considered pockets of warmth and intimacy by way of timber accents, soft curves and tubular silhouettes. Ornamentation is largely absent, and instead statement light fittings, dramatic furniture pieces and brass fixtures provide the visual impact. Nothing superfluous or lacking in purpose; each item contributing to the overall concept of indispensable simplicity. R @reallivingmag

ROMANCING THE STONE

1 If bold, feminine style isn’t your cup of tea, tone it down with pieces that whisper, not shout, like this neutral pink basin, dainty soap dish and pleated pendant.

text lindyl crabb | photography courtesy of mandarin stone

the look Like all good relationships, the key to expressing your feminine side in a shared bathroom is compromise. The blush basin nods to the pink interiors trend, and femininity is subtly interpreted through slender brass hardware and delicate accessories. Meanwhile, the floor-to-ceiling Alpina marble tiles, clutter-free layout and floating sink enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

2

Using subtle details to inform your colour palette creates harmony and continuity. Here, the basin matches the marble tiles’ blush-toned veins.

3

Love the look of marble but not the upkeep? Make a statement with marble wall tiles and switch to porcelain tiles (which are easier to clean) for the floor. A

109

TERRAZZO TROPICANO

1

2 @reallivingmag

110

Terrazzo is made from granite, glass or marble chips set into concrete or resin, but you can also buy smooth porcelain tiles that replicate the look.

3

Temper bright surfaces with pared-back tapware. On top of these eye-catching colours, bold fixtures would compete for attention and overwhelm the senses.

photography courtesy of mandarin stone

When mixing multiple colours and materials, stick to no more than three types of surface, and one finish per material. This will ensure it doesn’t look overworked.

advice

the look There’s something spontaneous and joyful about terrazzo, and this quality lends itself to experimenting with other materials and colours. Yes, this look is bold. But the contrast between the Mandarin Stone glossy subway and matte terrazzo tiles, and those solid tropical hues against the warm terrazzo’s neutral speckles, keep it balanced. A real living

FRENCH APOTHECARY

the look Inspired by vintage shops and French hotels, the bathrooms at the Maison de la Luz hotel are reminiscent of old-world apothecaries. The curved mirror, classic shaker style cabinets and ornate lamps tap into that antique feel, while the marble surfaces, symmetry and tonal scheme cleanse the palette, just like a modern pharmacy.

1

photography stephen kent johnson, courtesy of maison de la luz design atelier ace in partnership with studio shamshiri

A popular choice for decades thanks to their simple bordered design, shaker style cabinets like these will work in traditional, minimalistic and modern homes.

2 Accessories are key: decorate with a vanity mirror, vintage jars for storing make-up pads and cotton buds and a tray for displaying beautiful bottles.

3

Mosaic floor tiles add a touch of Art Deco-era pattern. These colours feel inspired by old glass medicine bottles in sepia, amber and green tones. A

CONTEMPOR ARY SANCTUARY

1

2 @reallivingmag

114

In minimalistic spaces, go for handleless cupboards and use essential fixtures as an opportunity to add style. Here, brass hardware warms up the white scheme.

3

Light, limewashed wood floors like these allow the timber’s natural grain to shine through, and prevent the look from entering ‘rustic’ territory.

design hans verstuyft architecten

Floating mirrors, wall-mounted taps and custommade seamless cabinets make the most of the available space while further enhancing the size of the room.

advice

the look This bathroom brings the saying ‘your body is a temple’ to life. Designed by Hans Verstuyft Architects, the almost uninterrupted white scheme feels modest yet sensual rather than monastic and cold. The natural materials, smooth border-free lines and elegant hardware all bring a level of tactility, warmth and emotion. A

BOLD MOVES

1

photography & styling lauren bamford | bathroom layout sarah trotter/hearth studio to stay here, visit slowbeam.com

Medium-sized tiles are best for making compact spaces seem larger. Too big and tiles will visually shrink the room, while small tiles = additional grout lines.

the look Graphic tiles can work in bathrooms of any size, and here’s the proof! Repeating the same tiles on the walls and floor eliminates physical borders and creates a sense of open space, while the playful design encourages visual movement. With so much pattern and colour, balance is required. Here, solid, masculine pieces with strong lines anchor the space.

2

The custom vanity, brass-finish tapware from Brodware and Sarah Ellison tiles all share the same warm tones to work in perfect harmony.

3

Owner Lauren Bamford included spaceenhancing elements, such as the wallmounted taps, frameless shower, open vanity and above-counter basin. A

117

MARBLE ART

1

2 @reallivingmag

118

To revamp a powder room in three steps, swap overhead lighting for wall lamps, install a stylish mirror and hide everyday items in cupboards under the vanity.

3

The quirky wallpaper and curved sconce and mirror add just the right amount of whimsy to soften the black accents and solid marble surfaces.

photography felix forest | interior design georgina jeffries

Wallpaper can take a bathroom from so-so to Insta-worthy. For the best results, use waterproof paper that will resist humidity, in areas that are well ventilated.

advice

the look The hero here is the pink marble shower, and to show it off, interior designer Georgina Jeffries encased the space with black-framed glass – like an artwork – and installed a bench which adds an extra element of luxury and relaxation. The lesson? Design your room around your favourite feature. A real living

119

advice

EYE CANDY

the look If the millennial pink look is still on your radar, you’ll be pleased to know there are fresh ways to try it in the bathroom. Cocooning the space in one type of tile has a more tranquil effect than designing a pink feature wall, which would compete with other materials. When working with pink, add one or two elements in a second colour (note the green marble benchtop). The contrast will ensure your space feels modern.

@reallivingmag

120

Unembellished decor in neutral tones, including the frameless mirror and the matching lamps, stool and vase, offer moments of stillness among the vivid colour.

3

If your floor plan allows, consider a large recessed window. It will provide access to flattering natural light as well as a spot for pot plants – or a handy place to sit. R

render design benjamin guedj

2

With so many tiled surfaces, there’s no need for layers of bath mats, trays or towel racks, because the small tiles and grout lines provide visual texture.

SITTING ON THE CORNER of George and Powlett streets in picturesque East Melbourne is a beautiful new building. Aptly named George + Powlett, the block of 12 apartments is a far cry from the outdated yellow-brick motel that used to reside at the same address. Designed by Powell & Glenn architects for ICON Developments (Icondevelopments.com.au), the concept was for stylish and timeless residences, and to create a space akin to living in a full-sized house while providing the comfort and convenience of apartment living. It was also imperative that the new building “responded to and looked out onto the heritage surrounds,” explains architect Ed Glenn. From the outside you’ll see an urban oasis – an impressive concrete-rendered facade is softened with climbing plants and palm trees. “Most of the apartments are built around courtyards or verandahs, which allows the interiors to be a study in space and light,” Ed says. And it’s true. Inside you’ll find functional spaces that are brimming with natural light and clever design ideas. “The interiors are quiet and use a palette of natural materials,” he adds. Timeless washed-timber flooring is complemented with in-built shelving in the same tone, while veiny marble and jet-black cabinetry in the kitchen offer a more contemporary edge. “The walls and ceilings are largely white plaster to create a sense that the building is carved out of one material,” Ed says. The apartments’ three-metrehigh ceilings and full-height doors and windows also contribute to their sense of openness. A

THE FINISHING TOUCHES The building’s penthouse apartment (pictured) is a study in texture and shape – a look carefully curated by interior designer Edwina Glenn (Ed’s wife). “I felt it was important to respond to the architecture with a layered contemporary design aesthetic that also drew on historical references,” she says. “I used a pared-back palette of earthy charcoal linen, ink blue bedding, caramel saddle leather and warm oak timbers.” The overall style is restrained and invigorating, and communicates effortlessly with the building’s architecture. HOW TO EARN & SAVE

money moves to make Who doesn’t love some cash back in their pocket? It turns out there’s a wealth of rebates and freebies you can tap into. Effie Zahos reveals all…

Zest for life Fruit pouch in Chartreuse, about $67*, Baggu.

1

banking fee rebates While many banks waive fees on their own ATMs, those pesky foreign ATM fees can still apply when you use a machine that’s part of another network. At up to $4 per transaction, the cost of using independently owned machines in pubs, clubs and service stations can really add up. Luckily there’s a new breed of accounts that will refund Australian ATM fees. Check out ME Bank’s Everyday Transaction Account and Macquarie Bank’s Platinum Transaction Account. Likewise, for those who travel overseas, UBank’s USaver Ultra Transaction Account has scrapped withdrawal and foreign exchange fees for overseas card withdrawals and purchases, and ING’s Orange Everyday account rebates ATM fees worldwide when you deposit a minimum of $1000 per month into your account and make at least five debit card purchases each month.

2

Medicare reimbursements Around 670,000 Australians are owed a Medicare rebate, and with a massive $110 million of rebates waiting to be claimed, some could be yours, especially if you haven’t provided Medicare with your bank account details. The average amount owed is about $150 per person, but if you make frequent visits to a doctor, this could be far more. The easiest way to update your details is through the Medicare Express Plus app, or your myGov account. Once updated, Medicare will take care of the rest, and deposit any money you’re owed into your account in a matter of days.

Cash strapped Liia Pieni Unikko bag, $195, Marimekko.

3

dental benefits A trip to the dentist can be expensive. The Grattan Institute found that two million Australians put off seeing a dentist each year because they cannot afford the cost. Yet good dental care is especially important for children, as it can prevent oral health problems later in life. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule might be the solution. This federally operated scheme is open to families who receive Family Tax Benefit A, and it provides up to $1000 worth of dental care per child over two calendar years. It can be used to pay for a range of dental services including check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fillings, root canals and extractions. If you don’t use the full $1000 in a single two-year period, any unused money can be carried over to the following year, so long as you’re still eligible for Family Tax Benefit. See Humanservices.gov.au for details.

energy discounts Don’t miss the chance to save on power bills. New South Wales families who receive the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) can take advantage of the annual $180 Family Energy Rebate. In Queensland, low-income earners and seniors can receive a $340 rebate on their annual electricity bill. South Australians on low or fixed incomes can apply for assistance of up to $223 annually, to meet the cost of energy bills. And Victorian families can save $50 through the Power Saving Bonus.

Want to create a garden that looks like it’s always been there? This beautiful wilderness of meandering paths, timber features and lush greenery achieves just that

text stephanie hope

Rough diamond An exposed concrete driveway leads the way to this stunning home, which has been painted in Haymes ‘True Black’. “The aggregate had coldstream stone, which has really nice tones,” says Simone. Step this way Stone steppers wind their way through garden beds filled with Japanese star jasmine. “You get a delicate look with a surprisingly tough plant,” says Myles Broad, principal designer at Eckersley Garden Architecture. A lace leaf Japanese maple screens off the carport. Bird’s eye view Goldie and Clover take in uninterrupted views over the garden and to the mountains in the distance. Hit the deck Silvertop ash boards make up the deck (opposite), where a Scandistyle swing gets plenty of use. A virginia creeper was chosen for its twining properties, meaning it won’t take over the house. The chairs and footstools are Ligne Roset designs.

AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND STYLIST, Simone Haag is well aware that living in a home mid-renovation comes with a certain degree of inconvenience. But even she draws the line at having to climb a ladder to reach her deck because the stairs haven’t been constructed yet! This was the catalyst she and husband Rhys needed to finally complete the exterior reno of their home in Melbourne’s outer east (see p42 for details of the new extension and revitalised interior). WILD ABANDON But first, a quick before shot. Simone uses words like “unloved”, “overgrown” and “barren” to describe the state of the garden when she and Rhys took ownership of it in 2011. “According to neighbours, it had only had one owner and a hell of a lot of renters,” she says. The timber exterior was faded, a sizeable tree stood in the way of a decent driveway, garden beds were rife with self-seeded trees and weeds and unsightly walls of exposed rock gave the property zero curbside appeal. When planning the new outdoor space, Simone and Rhys drew inspiration from their travels to Palm Springs. “We loved the use of undulating curves, the care and attention put into letterboxes and the way the gardens over there are easy to maintain and not too manicured,” she explains. “For our home, we had a loose and relaxed look in mind, working to a green and white palette. And Rhys wanted to create a space that felt as if it had always been there.” A real living

Garden path A winding dromana stone path is a continuation of the curved theme, while hedges of Indian hawthorn, crepe myrtles and ornamental pears sit either side. Ahead of the curve Circular elements are a recurring motif of architecture firm Kennedy Nolan. “The view is really interesting from the deck, and the porthole gives a sense of what’s happening below,” Simone says. Around the bend White concrete steppers lead from the carport to the front deck, while another set take you down the side of the house to the backyard. Splendour in the grass Goldie enjoys the Sir Grange lawn (opposite), chosen for its low water needs, hardiness and high shade tolerance.

RENO REINFORCEMENTS The couple tackled this challenging transformation in two stages, calling on a few industry peers to get the ball rolling. Rhys, a construction manager, did most of the labour and handiwork himself, and worked in collaboration with Myles Broad from Eckersley Garden Architecture to select ornamental pears and lace leaf maples to provide a mid-level canopy among the towering gums, and Japanese star jasmine to act as a gorgeous green carpet in the garden beds. While assisting with the internal renovation, architecture firm Kennedy Nolan also provided design advice and expertise for the exterior – the round porthole in the back deck’s panelled screen is a recurring motif of theirs and allows the family to enjoy their incredible view – while Design Orr Build fashioned the two new decks and Rhys’s pal Scott Round from Empire Concrete helped workshop ideas around those striking floating concrete stairs. THE GRASS IS GREENER The end result is a series of easy to maintain and even easier to enjoy spaces where Rhys, Simone and their three daughters abscond every chance they get. “There’s nothing better than sitting on the front steps with a coffee, enjoying the morning sun and the view,” Simone admits. Round the back, the little girls spend most days playing on the spongy lawn, foraging for sticks and pebbles and making fairy houses in the garden “rain, hail or shine”. R @reallivingmag

“My mother and step–father were married for 30 wonderful years. Dementia, a fall and cancer tore them apart in their final 12 weeks. I believe inheritance impatience also broke our family. After Mum was admitted to hospital and Dad put into separate care, the real truth came out. At a time when they were both most vulnerable, my step-sister used her power of attorney to withdraw money from their joint account. She also attempted to start the process to sell their family home from beneath my mother’s feet. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could be this callous and greedy at such a sad time.” SUSAN*, NSW

“She was trying to sell the house from under Mum’s feet” Financial abuse of the elderly is fast becoming one of Australia’s most serious social issues. Almost 60 per cent of Australians are worried that someone they know will be the victim of this insidious abuse.* We are committed to stopping the financial abuse of Australians, which can be at the hands of a family member, and we ask you to join our fight. Nationally consistent laws, an Australian Power of Attorney (P.O.A) register and a place to report this harm in every state are all needed to stop this kind of abuse. WHAT CAN YOU DO? • Ensure your older family members have a trusted P.O.A to protect their assets in the future. THE ONLY THING HOTTER than the sweltering temperatures and fragrant street food of Ho Chi Minh City is the hustle. Among the frenetic activity, the roads swarming with scooters and the sounds of vendors spruiking everything from ceramics to iced coffees, it’s hard to find the slow lane. Luckily, you don’t have to wander far to reach it. Tucked away on a tree-lined street near the commercial centre of the city is The Myst Dong Khoi hotel, a peaceful escape where visitors are met with the scent of ylang-ylang and jasmine, and the comforting familiarity of timber floors underfoot. Antique objects, traditional paintings, carved teak and wrought iron details take you back to Saigon, as the city was formally known, while the rooftop bar, infinity pool, gym and spa provide a place for guests to reset after days spent exploring the buzzing metropolis below.
