A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The beautiful feeling of October sky, the aroma of Shiuli, the nip in the air, the anticipation of festivals and lights.... the sheer joy in the heart tells you that it’s that time of the year again. Hailing from the eastern belt of India, Dusshera celebrations were always deeply sensorial experiences. The city used to fill with the rhythmic beats of the dhak mixed with the sound of chants and the fragrance of incense sticks and fresh blooms. But as a kid, the most delectable sound of all was of the sizzling street food on a tawa, on the streets during Dusshera. Yes, times have changed but the excitement hasn’t. So this year we wanted to do something different, while choosing the theme, and we named it ‘Modern Festivity.’ Our unique tweak to celebrations and decorations, the pages this month are filled with surprises. We have taken cues from global trends and brands, to make your festival revamp look more stylish than ever. From deciding on cutlery to gifts and adding a little golden

exuberance, we have tried to bring in decor ideas that are modernity-mixed-with-ethnic. Enjoy the issue and maybe try to revive a habit that seems to be losing its charm these days. Yes, we are losing the art of reading. There was a time when people used to love reading books. It’s true that life is fast paced, we find phones more convenient than books and magazines, but books are a great medium to escape the reality and enter our own unique fantasy land. We feel relaxed and happy. Take my word on this one and buy a book which takes your fancy this month. Give it a shot and write back ur experience. I shall wait to hear from you!

ART & ARCHITECTURE WISHLIST: FIRE PITS MAKING STATEMENTS
A Complete Makeover Home interiors have undergone a lot of changes. Today, home owners are well educated about what they need in their home and how they want their house to look like design-wise and presentation-wise. TIHG does an amazing work when it comes to displaying some of the best homes in the country. The magazine has successfully touched base and showcased almost all homes from North to South and East to West. Simple presentation, larger than life visuals and thought-provoking writing makes TIHG a mass magazine. Vivek Bhatena, Pune
Home Perfect Home is where the soul rests. The saying stands absolutely true. That’s why the Ideal Living section is unmistakably a favourite in the family scoring brownie points. Beautiful chic homes from India and from the European nations and the continent of Australia and New Zealand are a great source of information and a sure shot guide to home decor. On a personal note, for me as a regular reader, such homes are a blessings in disguise. As a home maker, I love to keep on updating and upgrading the interiors of my house. The stylised homes appearing in TIHG are a pure source of information and inpiration, a practical source of edutainment and above all, it acts as a guide for a perfect professional home makeover. Siddhi Gandhi, Ahmedabad
Foodies Corner
Drop Dead Thank you TIHG for having such wonderful Shopping section. Every month, I eagerly wait for the copy with loads of expectations, and team TIHG never disappoints. The Shopping pages are the exciting lot (nevertheless all sections have their own charm). At times its all about antiques, all about the old world charm collectibles, furnitures, gold, silver and lot more. I want to know where the best hanging lights and chandeliers can be sourced from. The upcoming November issue of TIHG is the anniversary issue. Looking forward to explosive and exciting features. I am sure there would be surprises in store for all readers. Also, I don’t see the IT Store page anymore? It is a novel way of presenting the latest ‘Happening’ stores in the Indian and global market. Ritika Sachdeva, Meerut, UP
I am a chef in the making. I enjoy reading Food Fetish and Dine In Style. Both different sections, yet two sides of the same industry. I want to make a suggestion to the Editor – I understand that TIHG is a complete home decor magazine. However, is there a scope for having a Q&A page with renowned chefs from across India who talk about their skills in culinary art. This will be a big boon for budding and talented hospitality students like me who enjoy making different dishes. Also, maybe a food competition held by the magazine will do wonders? The Marc Thorpe husk’s minimalist and understated lines are enriched by the quality and sophistication of the materials. The collection includes four seats of different backrest heights, small for the stool, medium, large or extra-large for the armchair.
The Torn Boontje shadowy chair has a modern, functional approach to form. The high backrest, the armrests and the seat end with curved lines give the armchair the appearance of a throne.
An iconic sofa, Victoria & Albert is based on the idea of a ribbon. It has soft, strong, continuous lines and the internal steel frame is covered in cold-cured foam.

TALK OF THE TOWN
The recently concluded Mi Casa Collective’s Pop Up store at Nivasa Contemporary was an absolute delight for every decor enthusiast. Right from exquisite furniture to fine art, carpets to cutlery, home decor accessories to accents, anything and everything was showcased at this unique exhibition. TIHG talked to the founders to find out more about the future pop-ups and more.

New This year Mi Casa Collective introduced several new partner brands at the show - collaborating with Mumbai based home decor brands that have previously been unavailable in New Delhi. We also exhibited a new collection of artworks that are affordably priced (under 1 Lakh). Ever since the inception of our pop-up store, Mi Casa has collaborated with over 60+ home decor brands and vastly expanded our clientele. This time around, for marketing, our focus was on promoting not just product images, but instead the story of the brand, the founder of the brand and his/her entrepreneurial journey. Response It was absolutely great! Our concept of curating home decor shows in an experiential setting and our belief in getting together like-minded people and brands in the decor space that complement one another, is one that differentiates us. Are we expecting the pop up store soon? We are planning our next pop-up on the 15th and 16th of October at Visaya - a boutique hotel in Panchsheel Park, New Delhi. The show will be centred around the upcoming gifting season - watch out for curated gift boxes and hampers that you can gift your loved ones homes! Future plans We are excited to launch our website (micasacollective. com) very soon! While the offline shows across New Delhi will continue, Mi Casa is also planning to start showcasing in other cities across India! We are also working on launching a gift registry!

’80s Hits at Home
Aradhana Anand’s personal reminiscences of the ’80s largely defines the latest collection called Tetris. Named after the infamous tile-matching game, Tetris is a musing on geometry and punk neon, executed with Indian weaves, handcrafated into Tetris-esque tile cushions. Available in two shapes, square (14’’X14’’) and lumbar (18’’X2.5’’) tile, the cushions are made from cotton fabric with woven Indian motifs embellished with a grid of fluorescent orange and pink thread. Stack, play and decorate is what Limón suggests for this collection, which is available in colours of sunshine yellow and neon green, each with border choice of either embroidered dots or neon stripes. Chic Spaces
L’Arbre Blanc or The White Tree by Sou Fujimoto Architects, Nicolas Laise, Dimitri Roussel and OXO Architects is inspired by a tree, with balconies that branch off the trunk and shades that sprout out of and protect its facade. The many balconies and pergolas really do promote outdoor living and enable a new type of relationship between residents. Each apartment boasts an outdoor space of at least 7m² (the largest is 35m²), with multiple levels of privacy and layout options; residents of the duplex apartments can move from one balcony to the other. So that all 113 apartments enjoy an interesting view. These exceptional outside spaces are fully-fledged living rooms, which are connected to the dwellings in such a way as to allow residents
to live inside and outside, a luxury for a city bathed in sunshine 80 per cent of the year! To reinvent the tower, the architects have taken the human dimension as the starting point. They have created public spaces at the top and bottom of the building: the ground floor is a glass-walled space opening out onto the street, while on the roof there is a bar open to the public and a common area for residents, so that even the owners of first-floor apartments can enjoy the view. tihG

The layout and setup of tea/ coffee table largely depends of the kind of tea party or coffee meet you are hosting. You should Goebel (available at S.T. Unicom) cover the table with an attractive tablecloth and place the plates in the center of each place setting. Fold linen napkin, serviette, for each guest. Lay out the cutlery. Porcelain or fine China cups crockery should be used or as per the formality of the event. My personal favourite decor for the tea table is rich candle stand and fresh flowers. S
o it all started with a brief for an entertainment zone consolidating a home theatre, lounge, pool, changing room, a gym, and two suites with dressers and toilets; attached to the owners’ existing 20 year old house. But, the architects wanted them to re-visit their brief and to give the annexe a reviving look. “We emphatically felt that the new addendum ought to be a standalone structure complimenting the current building and not replicating its architectural style,” says Rudraksh Charan of 42mm. The property boasts of an amazing, lavish green vegetation with tall trees and the architect felt the house ought to value that scene every step of the way and therefore the interior design had to be in sync with the architecture. The stand alone curved structure with the glass on either side houses the living room and home theatre placed adjacent to one another. The form is developed out of a concrete shell that gave the pool house a bold sculptural identity with a minimalist approach, looking like a peal from the landscape. With the use of glass on both sides makes the pool house all transparent, so the architects oriented it in a way that it sits along the pool and overlooks the 2.5 acres of greens on the other side. The gym was placed in a way that it encases the pool with buildings on all sides thus creating a sense of privacy. A boxy wooden volume divides the structure in two, creating space for a toilet and a pantry. Some timber was also added in the two main rooms – framing a cinema screen in the lounge space, and wrapping around a seating area in the bar area. The colour palette of the interiors is concrete grey, American oak wood and white. Exhibiting a non-conformist style, the Pool House is devoid of any unnecessary ornamentation. Each element is independently picked to suit the ethos of the space, so that nothing feels out of place or monotonous. “In fact the materials used in designing are left true to its nature, e.g. the concrete, wood, metal, leather are used in its unrefined state rather than a highly polished or finished surface,” concluded Rudraksh.

Challenges The entire building is an example of minimalism, every unwanted thing is either concealed, embedded or invisible; which required extreme detailing in the initial level. Designing shuttering to hold an inclined RCC wall weighing 8.5 tons, the architects made a proper unit like a 3D frame to hold the weight of concrete. Designing wooden frames in a curved section with wooden doors surrounded by glass on all sides, this was an experiment where the team developed a freestanding wooden door frame. The toilet is finished in singular in-situ terrazzo, which required masons from eastern Uttar Pradesh who work on doubly curved terrazzo surfaces. TIhg The Ideal Home and Garden October 2019 |

ou may imagine yourself flipping burgers to the applause of your friends or sipping wine while a pizza bakes over a hot fire. Whether you are dreaming of a rustic outdoor pizza oven or a sleek line of stainless steel, adding an outdoor kitchen can extend your living and entertaining space substantially. Your outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a grill, table and chair, or as elaborate as a fully outfitted kitchen complete with built-in appliances and seating. Just like an indoor kitchen, the outdoor kitchen is full of hazards so place it accordingly. Establishing the floor layout and material of your outdoor kitchen is key to building the foundation of your space. Flooring such as tile or marble will be slick and slippery when wet and may not hold up to grease or food stains. Choose materials that meet safety criteria, stay away from flooring that may be too slick or rugged, and select a material that can endure food spills and grease. Outdoor rooms bring a whole world of additional cooking options, like open-wood flame or smoking. So select low-maintenance materials and equipment designed to withstand the rigors of an outdoor kitchen. The easier the kitchen is to clean and maintain, the more the homeowner will use and enjoy their investment. Your outdoor kitchen serves as a place to enjoy cooking and eating food while entertaining family and guests. It’s an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor weather while having the comforts of your indoor space. Make sure you incorporate features that really make this space the center of your summer. Think about the surrounding landscape and design a kitchen that fits in well with that landscape. For a desert oasis, you might choose bold colours, like orange or turquoise, that stand in stark relief to the whites and sandy browns around it. For a tropical location, you might opt for materials like bamboo that seem right at home among the lush foliage. Cold areas (refrigeration), hot areas (grills and cooktops), wet areas (sinks) and dry areas (prep counters and storage) must all work together effectively in proper proximity, each with enough allocated space. Install lights to shine on cooking and food prep surfaces. Lighting serves dual purposes. First, it creates much needed light for tasks. Second, it creates a soft ambiance and sets the mood for entertaining. Incorporate both types of lighting for maximum effect. TIHG

The Illuminati(s) Lighting designers are often underappreciated in the design world, but the makers of an element that is integral in shaping the character of a space deserve all the attention ImpressIons: shrutI JaIn
What trends are you seeing in lighting design? I actively avoid seeking out any information about trends in any regard but most specifically in lighting, my approach is to satisfy my own aesthetic, to simply make work that pleases me and then send it out into the world. I do not want that process to be diverted or influenced by external influence.
Niamh Barry (Niamh Barry) What makes light magical to you? I am drawn to light as we are drawn to fire. I see it as life itself.
What are you most excited about in terms of how lighting technology has evolved? It is without a doubt the advances in LED technology that have directly changed my work. When I made my first ‘edge lit’ piece in 2003/2004, I was working with incandescent light sources and so with the advancement of LED technology that were cutting edge at the time, this new technology allowed me to literally draw with light, as seen in my very first LED edge lit piece in 2005…As this technology has advanced, I now have much greater control over illumination levels and colour temperatures and this, although subtle, continues to improve my work.
Do you have a design or lighting philosophy? My approach is instinctive and visceral, I try not to interfere with my creative process by being tied down by too much analysis or by having a defined philosophy, I prefer to let the creative process be free. A project of yours that stands out in your mind as rewarding or challenging or somehow memorable? The monumental piece that was commissioned by the Central Bank of Ireland “Vesselscape”, at 10 meters long, it is a commanding, technically challenging and beautiful piece and the fact that, unlike most of my work, it is here in Dublin makes it even more rewarding.

What are you most excited about in terms of how lighting technology has evolved? The technology of light source, LED has changed the way how people view the lighting and even lighting construction. I am looking forward to new possibilities for the light source. Last year, I saw the textile of light, made with lighting fiber, in an exhibition, which is very inspiring.
Zhekai ZhaNg (Zhekai Zhang Design) What makes light magical to you? I think that light is a bond that links up space and objects. The reflection beyond the object and object itself becomes an integrity space, which means the light also builds a designed space. Do you have a design or lighting philosophy? My design practice is carried with emotions, blending the exploration of handcrafts with the experimental making process, taking everyday materials and reinterpreting them into a contemporary and sustainable world. A project of yours that stands out in your mind as rewarding or challenging or somehow memorable? Coffire project. It took me almost half a year to do material research with coffee grounds. It was a tough time, I don’t know how the project developed in the next step without experts and craftsman help. In some sense, product design is transformative What trends are you seeing in lighting design? My design process began with the exploring of material research. Choosing the recyclable material and going forward the sustainable lighting design path is my ideal aim.

Prateek JaiN & gautam Seth (Klove Studio) What makes light magical to you? The playfulness of light and shadow where they make the necessary separation between tones is the premise of our observations. It is mesmerizing how different materials like glass, ratan, veneer, precious stones, brass all respond to light differently. Different hues of light can change the mood of the person as each color generates a certain stimuli in a human being making him/her respond differently in each ambience. It surprises us that such a small thing can be so powerful and magical. Do you have a design or lighting philosophy? While designing a lighting object, we focus on two broad things- Firstly, whether it is a form based on architectural sculpture. Secondly, if it holds a certain function. A project of yours that stands out in your mind as rewarding or challenging or somehow memorable? Our latest collection “Totems over Time, is a very memorable creation of ours. The beautiful god-like structure in correlation with geometry are the emblems of abundance, protection, vision and beauty. The collection is inspired by various cultures of the world which have a deep connection to elemental energies around them. What trends are you seeing in lighting design? It is very impressive to see how technology is immersed with light. Kinetic lighting is also used massively by lighting designers these days as it can create a completely surreal experience for the audience. Also, marketers are using light to target the senses as generating a certain stimuli affects the buying decision of a buyer. It transforms the entire experience which can be both negative or positive depending on the perception. What are you most excited about in terms of how lighting technology has evolved? As LED lighting is widely used, it is essential to effectively focus on developing a sense of sustainability and efficiency while doing justice to the design aesthetics. Lighting design has also become intellectual as the changing technology is considering association with lighting through color temperature and saturation.

Nikhil Paul (Paul Matter) What makes light magical to you? The intangible quality of it that presents endless possibilities to explore and the ability to transform any space at any given time of the day. Do you have a design or lighting philosophy? We have a set mood that reflects throughout our range of light sculptures. A project of yours that stands out in your mind as rewarding or challenging or somehow memorable? There are so many such special projects and spaces, AESOP Seoul, Natan store designed by Vincent Van Dusen, The copper house in Alibaug by Bijoy Jain, our debut showcase at Villa la vigie, former Karl Lagerfeld’s house in Monaco. What trends are you seeing in lighting design? Our designs are always driven by material and the way it interacts with light. We are not trend-driven. We are focused on designing and creating classics. Hence the choice of materials that we work in - materials that are hand finished with age-old techniques that age with time and can be passed on to generations. What we feel cannot be ignored is energy-saving LED’s and smart use of lighting technologies that reduce carbon footprints. The studio is investing a lot in R&D to come up with smarter ways to use lighting technology. What are you most excited about in terms of how lighting technology has evolved? The colour of LED is exciting - there are 1000 hues in white alone. We have been exploring human touch to interact with light since 2017 and we recently launched our Monolith in stone at Salone Del Mobile, Milan that makes it possible to interact with light through stone with a touch or a simple hand sway.

to strike a simple cord with my creation, be it designs or an artwork, it gives me a sense of achievement. A project of yours that stands out in your mind as rewarding or challenging or somehow memorable? Well each project gave me a high while it was being pursued. Some projects, which are more challenging, invariably give that extra sense of fulfillment. The light installation titled ‘Chroma’ that I designed almost 10 years ago when I first ventured into lighting design is, in my opinion, my best design. Even after a decade, it does not fail to evoke a certain emotive response from the audience.
ViBhor SogaNi (Studio Vibhor Sogani) What makes light magical to you? Light in a sense is formless. It acquires its form from the source and from the material it is reflected from or refracted through. Therefore, trying to mould light into a particular expression is like trying to give shape to air. The form of the luminaries provides a tangible story, but it is always the quality of light that guides the experience of that luminaries and the surrounding space. The process of designing with light as the guiding principle for me is not only enriching but magical. Do you have a design or lighting philosophy? ‘Simple is Beautiful’ & ‘Less is More’ are the fundamental principles that guide me to work towards timeless designs that one does not get bored of. I try to make forms that appear effortless. Whenever I manage

What trends are you seeing in lighting design? In the past, the application of Lighting and associated technology was limited as compared to its present avatar. Today, Lighting effectively acts as the fourth dimension of architecture, and rightly so. The fact is, that the impact of this medium can bring about a dramatic change in the quality of architecture and its perception. This realisation and availability of suitable alternatives, is leading to the rise in demand of quality lights, energy-efficient sources and even lighting consultants. A highly positive trend, this demonstrates that the industry is growing; there are new developments every day, in terms of material and technology. Lighting design is slowly and steadily moving towards computation and automation, and is becoming interactive and interdisciplinary in its approach.
What are you most excited about in terms of how lighting technology has evolved? Lighting Design is steadily moving towards computation and automation. It is becoming interactive and interdisciplinary in its approach. I see a larger scope of collaboration between different fields of design, in the coming years. Also, theideas of global relevance are steadily seeping into design, with its interaction with art and are becoming more responsive towards human experience. There is greater integration with products of daily use, and a lot of focus on sustainability. All of these issues are collectively bringing a tremendous transformation in the field, which are hard to quantify but exhilarating to witness. tIhG

ART INSPIRED Design
For 25-year-old Karan Nawab, art is extremely personal and perceptual, while design is rational and is meant to please everyone. The self taught artist and designer wants to keep on creating sculptures and experiment with different forms of art and materials. Karan talks about his journey so far...
Early Days It all started in college when my dream to start something of my own pulled me to customise wooden coasters. Yes, I learned the designing process through YouTube tutorials and after some time I got an idea to design wooden mobile covers with customised designs engraved on it. It was during that phase when I tumbled upon Mandala art and was quite fascinated by it. I started researching the art form, and eventually started designing my own Mandala designs. My dream to design decor products started coming true as my hands were completely into sculptures and wall arts by now. USP Fusion of Mandala art along with human emotions, architecture, mythological characters, thoughts. Each and every form is custom designed and is not replicated in any other wall art. Also a limited number of pieces are replicated of a particular design. In some of the artworks, the different layers are hand painted in a significant colour scheme and then placed together. It easily takes a month to create each design. Exciting and Challenging I love choosing different subject and fusing Mandala art along with it. My design should reflect the subject and should be meaningful. However there have been times when the art looks aesthetically pleasing but it doesn’t conveying any emotion or message. Therefore the challenge is to interpret the story in layers. Inspirations I take inspirations from Islamic architecture, Persian and Mandala art. All these are very unique form of art and their intricacy reflects in my work too. TIHG

Architect Speak
The FuTure Beckons TIHG spoke to six elite architects - each heading innovative brands to give us their predictions for the future of design I M P r e S S I O N S : B e N Oy S e B a S T I a N
Parul ZaverI (Abhikram) The future of design requires us human beings to be at our responsible best, no matter what our profession, economic conditions or living situations. Every person can contribute to the cause of responsible living. As architects, designers and engineers, specifically, we need to realise that buildings are major consumers of natural and man-made resources throughout the life cycle of extraction processing of raw materials, construction, operation and deconstruction. Responsible design is the need of the day. Let us not fail the environment and our beautiful world which has given us plenty.
NITIN KIllawala (G7 Architects) The future of architecture is majorly dependent on the belief that the benefit of design should percolate to the masses, where the issue of slum housing must be treated at par with the newer infrastructure projects, rather than being left to speculative real estate developments. The fact that the value of a well thought of design intervention can never be mortified by template clustering of spaces should be taught in architecture schools, so the upcoming generations don’t fall prey to the dark abyss of core real estate. The process of blending the contemporary elements with the vernacular is of utmost importance today and in the future as well.

Architect Speak
aKSHaT BHaTT (Architecture Discipline) There is a strong need to go back to the essence of design and start removing all the expensive embellishments there are, as they are just generating waste and visual clutter. There are intelligent cues in our built environment and it is supposed to give us space to think and exist. Today, there remains a whole world of redundant structures, technologies and landscapes that can yet be transformed, no matter how seemingly naïve or banal, into something moving or quietly contemplative. This is the century of recuperation. There is no space, no forests, no water anymore for continuous production of new things. So, take something old and make it special. Tools and technology will change, but what’ll never change is the need for inspiring ideas and inspiring techniques.
MaNISH DIKSHIT (AUM Architects) Basic modernist and de-constructivist concepts have metamorphosed from classical, art deco, art nouveau ideologies. Fabricating concepts of green architecture such as rain water harvesting, re-usable material usage for construction, vernacular designs - have become mandatory for the current scenario and future as well. The emerging ideas of sustainability are crucial turning points that are aiding in creation of a healthier and more energy-efficient environment. A revolutionisation of all design aspects need to be culminated in a unifying theme by working with a varied range of materials to comprehend a luxurious yet concept-oriented living ambiance. Thus, amalgamating a user-friendly space planning and a relatable dĂŠcor, while maintaining the micro-climate in its blooming status is what circumscribes architecture of today and the imminent future.

Architect Speak
arcHaNa vaN GIllS (AVG Architecture En Interiors) The future is closer than we think. With an increasingly global population and abundant technology, forward thinking is a requisite. Technology will integrate seamlessly into our homes and lives, changing how we live, work, and travel. Cities will adapt to population booms and changing climates. Designs will aim to be more innovative, useful, understandable, unobtrusive, honest and long lasting. It will not be only about beauty or aesthetics but its relevancy to human emotions. Smart planning will be the key to a smooth transition, though much of this new technology will function using existing infrastructure. Although architects and designers cannot solve complex global problems alone, they are some of the most important players in this critical fight.
rOHIT Suraj (Urban Zen) The future of design is going to be increasingly digital. Whether in concept, detail or in execution, the process has and will continue to see an increase in the use of technology with the way projects are delivered. Working with technology whilst being original at a time when speed is a prerequisite will only allow the most intuitive and perceptive ‘architects’ to shape the future of the built environment we will work and live in! hen the Kothari’s moved to Bengaluru from San Francisco they wanted to build a home that was warm and inviting for their little girl. Luckily for them, in the garden city of India, they soon identified a penthouse apartment in the bustling neighbourhood of Indiranagar in the heart of Bengaluru. But, they still needed a designer who
could help them convert the house into a home, who could understand their needs, and was aligned with their design sensibilities and thought process. They struck gold with Aakriti Saraf, a young skilled interior designer. They loved the passion and vibrancy Aakriti exuded for the projects she undertook and her emphasis on finding the right balance between

design and functionality. “This was one of the most thoughtful and deliberate design processes we’ve ever been through. Aakriti wanted to drill down into every aspect of the project- concept, narrative, aesthetic, mechanical, and functional,” says the owner. Aakriti realised that the Kotharis were extremely passionate about their new found nest. As a designer, it was important for her to have a one-on-one detailed discussions about the family’s lifestyle, daily habits and social needs. Once satisfied and sure of what the Kotharis needed, Aakriti set to work on the detailed designs, invisibly introducing necessary functionalities while showcasing the flair and style of the young power couple. other, which could be used as the family room. The result of their combined efforts is an apartment that’s contemporary, but surprisingly warm; that welcomes the outdoors into the indoors; a home in which every object and design detail is based on logical reasoning and design thinking. Aakriti opted for a neutral palette, but layered many textures throughout the home, including stone, wood, and brass. It was also important to have all the sections flow nicely together to make it feel like a cohesive unit while still maintaining each area’s distinct purpose. When the lady of the house and Aakriti found their needs not being met by local stores, they travelled overseas to hunt for the right furniture - in terms of design, functionality and value. The home of Delhi-based interior designer Sanjyt Syngh is as distinctive as his name. Guided by his philosophy ‘homes being an expression of your taste, and that every home must tell a story’, Sanjyt’s arresting home surely spins stories that have the power of holding so many conversations. The beauty of this space is in the details. “My design approach for the apartment has been a tad bit different. I didn’t have the end-result in mind when I started designing, but I knew I will be focusing a lot on art and sculptures that I have been collecting from my travels. It was more about what ideas and art not to use,” the designer shares. Walking into the home, you are immediately greeted by a 3D installation named Infidelity by Sanjyt himself. It represents the childhood game we would play on the last few pages of our notebooks in the innocent days. And that innocence has been lost to the greed of adultery in our society. The ants kind of signify the beast amongst the simplicity of the “X’s” (pun intended) and the “O’s”. Hence Infidelity. In continuation of his knack for detailing, the palette of a delicious brew of rich, lustrous colours - right from the blues, greens to the reds, golds catch your attention in the form of the living room. Warm tones are incorporated into the overall scheme - they highlight, create shadows, contours and drama, and draw the eye to detail. “Colour is extremely important to me and to explain – I will have to go back to my childhood. My parents used to export garments and handicrafts back in the day. All my evenings after school and my holidays were spent in the factory. I would say I have

I even remember interacting with some of the overseas buyers and designing products for them on the spot. Being exposed to all that made me fall in love with colour and textures,” Sanjyt says. His edgyeclectic style somehow imbues the home with a unique vibe, perfect to enjoy. From the textured wallpaper by Carlucci di Chivasso wallpaper series by JAB Anstoetz and the photograph series by Lebanese lensman Eli Rezkallah to the chandelier by Eichholtz, every piece has its role to play. Added to this mix of elements is another artwork by Sanjyt and has been known to lift many eyebrows till date! “The base of this artwork is a parallelogram. The representation of rhino #AlmostAUnicorn in animal symbolism has often led to misperception. The guiding

principle for depicting its meaning is that “things are actually not what they seem. So in the artwork base, you will find these straight lines (made with brass inlay) depicting the guiding lights that lead you in the right direction ahead. Hence, the name March Ahead,” explains Sanjyt. The colours also constantly change as per the sumptuous natural light, flooding through the floor-to-ceiling windows as well as the ambient lighting inside. When it comes to the dining area, the same sombre and earthy monotones continue giving the floor to yet another eclectic canvas, which includes artwork of an award-winning National Geographic lensman called The Atlantic puffin. These layers of colours and detailing punctuate the element of surprise mostly at every line of
sight. The family room serves the purpose of relaxing and entertaining both. Using wing chairs made from green velvet and a centre table from IDUS (with hydraulic mechanism), which converts into a small dining table, this has been made into another articulate area. An art-laden corridor comprising of a large anonymous painting picked up from an art gallery in Bali and the gas cylinder installation called ‘City Under Pressure’ from Studio Art, New Delhi adding to the overall mood of the space, leads to the two bedrooms. The master bedroom has masculine and strong hues, which highlight the interesting artworks as well as the dark ‘Leopard Walk’ wallpaper by Cole & Son. Thanks to its retro “motel” sign out front, this unassuming low-rise seems at first glance like a forgotten 1950s anachronism. But look past the period-piece signage and The Drifter reveals itself as an exercise in modernised nostalgia, both in terms of design and concept. The property is a playful respite from New Orleans’ expected offerings, shining a light on a newly hip side of the city by acting as a melting pot for the local and global “drifters” who end up there. The 20 rooms and suites span approximately 226 square feet, and offer pool views, a bathroom with a shower, and a working desk. While the King Room features a kingsize bed and a day bed, the Double Queen Room and the Bunk Room offer two and four queen-size beds, respectively. The Garden King Room and the Garden Double Queen Room also both play host to a private terrace, with the former boasting a king-size bed and a day bed and the latter featuring two queen-size beds. Retro yet refreshingly original, the interiors come alive with pastel colours and custom furnishings that contrast brick and concrete walls.
