FROM THE EDITOR:

HOME LOVE

S

PHOTOGRAPHY (PORTRAIT & BOTTOM LEFT) CHRIS WARNES (MIDDLE LEFT) JOHN DOWNS

pring is a wonderful time for decorating – doors are flung open, colour becomes key and somehow the sunlight seems a little brighter. It’s also a season for new beginnings: while Home Beautiful’s lovely editor Sarah spends time with her family, including brand new little one, Jean Elizabeth, I have the privilege of sitting in her editor’s chair and bringing you more pages to inspire. For the past seven years or so, as editor of HB’s homes section, I have had the happy job of finding a selection of gorgeously stylish homes to feature in these pages each month. Every day I get to step into the lives of people who create the most beautiful of spaces for their families, and each day I marvel at their incredible talents in creating a home, filled with love and joy, which is just right for them. Our homes are about more than just chic finishes and designer cushions. They tell unique stories about the people who live there – we see how our homeowners actually live, the spaces where they celebrate significant events, where their much-loved four-legged family member loves to sun himself and find out why an artwork means so much. This month, we meet Mohammed and Fatema (from page 72), who decided that their family’s forever home needed to include a home for Mohammed’s parents, too. The solution? Two stand-alone abodes under one roof, linked by a courtyard that is the heart of family get-togethers, giving both families privacy, and connection. How amazing for little sons Yusuf and Esa to see their grandparents every day! It’s a wonderful trend that we are seeing more and more – teenagers taking over the ground level of Queenslanders (complete with kitchens and private entrances), a roomy garage converted into a chic home for newlyweds and, in Mohammed and Fatema’s case, a whole home built with grandparents in mind. It’s a unique way to keep families together longer: as a parent of two teenagers whose company I quite enjoy, I know that any future renovation my husband and I do (soon, I hope!) will include a design that makes them want to stay that little bit longer. So while Sarah is on leave, my mission is clear: to continue to bring you stunning pages of inspiration and to introduce you to even more homes with wonderful homeowners who have invited us in for a while.

LOOK A STORY OF RENOVATION TO RELAXATION

“When we first bought our house, Joe actually hated it. It didn’t always look like it does now. It used to be a brick bungalow with a bad 80’s reno but I had the vision of turning it into a Hamptons style home. Thanks to LineaTM weatherboard, lots of patience and some tears and laughter along the way, we got the forever home we dreamed of, somewhere our kids can always come back to.” Our renovation was built by Nulook Homes and designed by Paramount Design. WE SAT DOWN WITH LOS ANGELESBASED INTERIOR DESIGNER AND TV PERSONALITY JEFFREY ALAN MARKS TO UNCOVER HIS SECRETS TO DECORATING SUCCESS How long have you been working in interior decorating and how did it all start? “I’m now going into my 25th year in the design space – I started working from my kitchen table while I was living in London after completing design school, followed by several stints working for diferent design and architecture firms. My first job was – very fortunately – a 28,000-square-foot ranch in Colorado that kept me in work for over two years! I then hired my first worker and quickly went to working 24-7 on five huge projects.” What’s the worst piece of decorating advice you’ve ever received? “To match artwork to the interior of the house. Instead, take inspiration from what’s going on in the garden and translate this into the interior space.” What’s your most favourite piece of furniture you have ever owned and why? “There’s a settee at the end of my bed that I have had since college. It was in my first apartment and has moved and been re-covered so many times I have lost count. I think a piece like this – one that can move around with you and take on a whole new life is incredibly special. That’s why it’s so important to buy well from the start.”

When you can’t find the perfect nursery furniture, ask your photographer husband to build something – and sometimes the task at hand triggers a career change. Adelaide’s Justin Hermes Design has strong sustainability credentials. He sources timber from naturally fallen trees and converts it into practical, sensible furniture with a sense of history and longevity. The streamlined, simple designs work seamlessly with the materials, allowing the timber to shine. New Zealand-based designer Tim Webber ofers super-sleek furniture and lighting creations, predominately manufactured across the Tasman. Tim’s ‘Pivot’ cofee table (right), with its striking solid walnut and dowelmeets-T-frame base, is topped with polished limestone. It is also available in oak with a Carrara marble top.

AT A GLANCE Who: Stacy Madden What she does: Mixed media artist, with a focus on sculpting and weaving found materials. Where she’s based: Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Why she does it: “I love tactile materials and re-creating elements of nature. Being able to create pieces that individuals love to have in their home makes me so happy.” Visit: instagram.com/woven_husk

OPPOSITE PAGE: Working in her home studio, Stacy is truly in her element. “I love seeing where pieces end up and how people style them to make them their own,” she says. THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Some of Stacy’s more recent designs are painted in matt black, which is striking against white walls; Stacy has a connection with every piece she makes; one of the biggest pieces Stacy has made was created from a palm trunk that was carefully stripped back and lightly whitewashed; hours are spent prepping fronds and husks before the creative part of the process can even begin.

THE EDIT

STACY MADDEN NEVER imagined palm trees would play such a pivotal role in her life. Her home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, enveloped by towering lontar, adonidia and banana palms, has become her “palm farm”. “I have gorgeous friends who’ve become my little tribe of palm stalkers too,” she says. “I’ll often come home and find a pile of husks, which have been thrown over my fence.” The importance of palms becomes clear when you learn that Stacy uses their constituent parts in her work. She deconstructs their fronds, husks and seed pods, and sculpts them into textural wall hangings interspersed with clay beads and materials collected from her local beach, which is just a stone’s throw from her home. “There’s poetry to be made from what nature discards,”

set for my kids, so I looked for an outlet,” she says. Enrolling in a photography course she honed her skills behind the camera and returned to her love of sculpture. “I had lots of white walls in my home to fill and wanted some props to practise photography, so I began making wall hangings.” Encouraged by friends who saw her work and requested pieces for their own home, Stacy began posting photos of her pieces on Instagram. Commissions began streaming in, and they haven’t stopped. “I’m genuinely blown away by it all,” she says. Among the many ‘pinch-herself moments’ have been commissions from the Coqui Coqui hotel in Bora Bora, and orders from as far afield as Canada, Germany and the Netherlands. With that backdrop of palm trees providing a

“I LOVE THAT THE MATERIALS I USE ARE SPECIFIC TO WHERE I LIVE, A SUBTROPICAL COASTAL AREA” ~ Stacy says the artist, whose business Woven Husk was founded last year. A true creative at heart having completed a fine arts degree majoring in sculpture, Stacy always intended to pursue visual arts, yet her creative journey took a detour when she ended up working in the corporate sector for more than a decade. “I always made excuses for not pursuing art; I was either too busy, or I didn’t have a designated studio space,” she says. Motherhood, though, changed her perspective, and while on maternity leave with her second child, Harper, she reflected on what made her happy. “Being creative is when I come alive, and following your passion is an example I wanted to

ready source of materials to use in her open-air studio, the desire to create is ever-present, yet Stacy is most productive when son Zig, five, and daughter Harper, two, are at school and childcare. “Between school drop-of and pick-up I’m head down,” she says. “But I really don’t see it as work. I enjoy every aspect of it.” No one could be prouder of the career path Stacy has carved than her husband Stuart, who’s her biggest champion. “He puts up with all the mess I leave around and the late nights I put in because he sees how much I love it,” she says. “It’s taken me a long time to get here, but I feel I’ve finally found what I’m meant to be doing.”

TOP: A treasure trove of texture and natural tones, Stacy’s studio walls are adorned with found materials. “This is my happy place,” she says. BOTTOM: Stacy mostly works on the floor. “Some of the lontar fronds are up to 1.8m long, so being on the ground I can access them from all angles and spread out,” she explains.

Stacy wholesales small collections to selected retailers in Australia and overseas, but the bulk of her work is made up of commissioned pieces. “People will often send me a photo of a space they want a piece for and we’ll chat about what will work,” she explains. “Or, they’ll want to combine elements from several designs I’ve done in the past.”

TIMELESS

BEAUTY A QUEENSLAND COUPLE SAW A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR THEIR GROWING FAMILY IN A HOME RIPE FOR A NEW CHAPTER STORY & STYLING TAMARA SIMONEAU PHOTOGRAPHY ANASTASIA KARIOFYLLIDIS

HOMES EASY ELEGANCE Interior designer Angela and her husband, Bronte, had their eye on this beautiful Queenslander in Toowoomba long before it was theirs. “We always loved the home and admired it,” says Angela. “We saw a lot of potential to bring it back to its former glory.” The couple bought the house when their eldest child, Ruby, now 13, was just a baby, and their renovation plans have evolved along with their family, which now includes Harriet, 11, and Hugo, eight. Classic kerb appeal comes courtesy of a bright white exterior in Dulux Lexicon with bold Dulux Monument trims, bordered by layers of linear Japanese box, murraya hedges and camellias.

reezing through the wide, sun-soaked hallways and fresh white rooms in Angela and Bronte’s home in Queensland’s Toowoomba, it’s hard to imagine it was ever anything but the elegantly relaxed family abode it is today. For Angela, an interior designer with a passion for beautiful textiles, the memories of what came before are still vivid. “Carpets were bright blue and had been eaten by moths, the bedrooms had a different colour for every wall, and there were burgundy velvet drapes and blue doors with gold paint detail throughout,” she recalls. But none of this was enough to deter the couple from a home that had bewitched them from afar for several years. “We could see our family growing here,” says Angela, who at the time had baby Ruby. “When I saw the ‘For Sale’ sign I just had to have a look inside. I rang Bronte, who was on the roof of our home at the time doing repairs, and asked him to come and have a look, too. The next morning we both woke up knowing we had to have it.” The family moved in, and one child became three with the arrival of Harriet, now 11, and eight-year-old Hugo. As they grew, so too did Angela and Bronte’s dream floor plan. “We changed our plans three times over the years before we finally got it the way we wanted,” says Angela. The couple tasked local company, Aspect, with drawing up their much-pondered ideas and gave builder Tim van Tricht the job of meticulously realising their dreams.

wir

After an initial spruce of the interior with new carpets and a few coats of paint to wash away all that clashing colour, the bigger job of extending the home happened in stages, over several years. “Being an old Queenslander, everything took longer than we expected thanks to uneven floors and other problems, which in turn meant more dollars,” Angela explains. Two new bedrooms, an ensuite and laundry were added in a new wing, and walls were removed to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. Fences and gates were repaired or replaced, verandahs extended, the old hallway ceiling was lifted and the roof redone. And along the way, Angela and Bronte were busy getting their hands dirty outside. “We’ve been working on the garden for years!” says Angela. Nature’s palette permeates the indoors with vivid greens and abundant shades of blue the constant companions of Angela’s classic canvas of bright white. “I love the freshness of it and the versatility it brings, it’s a great foundation,” she says. “I much prefer to bring colour through with art, soft furnishings and floor rugs.” The interior designer has also weaved beautiful patterns into the mix with textiles she samples and sources from all over the world. “I like unique pieces, particularly bespoke soft furnishings,” she says. “I don’t tend to have any one style, I just aim to create spaces that are relaxed and comfortable.” An ideal combination for a home that’s now made to measure for her family’s future.

HALLWAY “I love sitting here in the afternoon and having a glass of wine with a friend, or a cold drink with the kids after school,” says Angela of the

light-drenched hallway area (above), once an exterior deck. Neutral tones in the custom linen sofa from Beadles and an Armadillo & Co rug warmly complement the floor. “It’s an Indian tea stain and it took a bit to get right,” says Angela. “I wanted an oak look with a slight hint of black throughout it.” LIVING ROOM A homage to Angela’s favourite hues, the living room is all about comfort and family time (opposite). “I find green so refreshing and have always loved blue – I adore the combination,” says the mum-of-three. Mix-and-match seating allows for plenty of space and lots of colour combinations to play with – forest green and vivid denim linen custom-made couches from Colby Furniture, and an antique occasional chair Angela had reupholstered, evoke a refined yet relaxed feel. An oversized pewter pendant from One World Collection adds drama above.

KITCHEN

With a growing family and plenty of dinner guests to cater for, clever cabinetry design was the priority in the kitchen (opposite). “We created a new hallway behind the kitchen to separate it from the rest of the house, so we lost floor space and had to be smart about storage,” says Angela. Every bit of the Caesarstone-topped island has built-in storage, and a concealed walk-in pantry keeps benchtops clutter-free. Foundry stools from Interiors Online are an edgy addition, as are the trio of ‘Augusta’ medium hanging lamps from Emac & Lawton. DINING ROOM

Camellias from the garden in urns from Orient House mimic a striking piece of art by Angela’s friend, Tarn McLean (top left). “It’s so detailed – you can see so much work and thought has gone into it,” says Angela. As for the

12-seater table from Harolds Finishing Touches (top right): “I found the biggest table I could as we love having friends and family over, so it’s well used,” adds Angela. Softness underfoot is delivered by an Armadillo & Co ‘Kalahari Weave’ rug in Natural/ Pumice, while eras gently collide with an industrial-style One World Collection pendant hanging from the traditional pressed-tin ceiling, which, like the rest of the interiors, is painted in Dulux Lexicon Quarter. FAMILY ROOM

A wall was removed to create a more family-friendly flow through the living, kitchen and dining zones. Angela had the plush custom Colby Furniture couch (right) covered in a bolt of bright blue fabric, while a rattan chest from Angela Smith Interiors doubles as a stylish and durable coffee table.

HUGO’S ROOM

The ensuite (top left) has been thoughtfully appointed to make the most of a small space. A mirror from Duet Home Styling and a wall light from Emac & Lawton convey old-world charm. For a touch of luxe, custom cabinetry, painted in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, is finished with a tumbled marble splashback from SNB Stone.

Navy rules in Hugo’s room (left), where a custom bedhead and skirt in William Yeoward fabric command the room. Horse art throw cushions, painted by Laura Douglas, add some fun, and exotic animal prints sourced through Angela Smith Interiors are hung directly above side tables from St Barts – just the right height for an eight-year-old.

RUBY’S ROOM

Eldest daughter Ruby had grown past the pink phase when it came time to decorate her new room (top right), so Angela opted for soft blue accents including the ‘Marrakesh’ rug in Skylark from Armadillo & Co, and a Laura Ashley lampshade and chair. “I wanted to go with a style that would grow with her,” explains Angela. The interior designer sourced ginger jar prints on Etsy and had them framed for either side of Ruby’s window. Custom cushions in Beacon Hill Fabric’s ‘Hidden Temple’ add pops of pretty colour.

MAIN BEDROOM

“I wanted our room to feel peaceful, a sanctuary where we could relax,” says Angela of the sublime parents’ retreat (opposite). Crisp white walls envelop the space, allowing soft blues, greys and greens to steal the show. A nude sketch by Madonna Kelly-Ford creates impact, and neutral bedding is paired with a custom bedhead in ‘Carnival’ fabric in Green from Christopher Farr. Decorative silver lamp bases from Harolds Finishing Touches are customised with shades from Magnolia Interiors.

OUTDOORS Hugo, Harriet and Ruby enjoy a game with their spoodle, Josie. “In the warmer months we spend most of our time on the verandah,” says Angela. The cast-iron fretwork was mostly intact when the couple bought the home. They had it removed and powder-coated before putting it back up.

Who lives here? Angela, an interior designer; Bronte, a national magazine sales manager; their children Ruby, 13; Harriet, 11; and Hugo, eight; and Josie, the dog. Best advice for anyone starting a renovation on a period home? Angela: “Add three months and 30 per cent to your budget. Expect the unexpected, and live in it if you can to really get a feel for your family’s needs.” Your secret to mixing pattern and colour? “I choose a hero fabric first and then add smaller-scale patterned fabrics, mixing prints and weaves. I use plain or small patterned fabric on large upholstered pieces such as sofas and use the hero fabric on smaller pieces.” How do you keep your home kid-friendly? “Since my children were babies I have never put special things up high. They grew up learning to respect their environment and appreciate nice things and are good at keeping their rooms tidy.”

CONNECTED

Three generations live under one roof in this unique double home belonging to Brisbane couple Mohammed and Fatema, their children Yusuf and Esa, and Mohammed’s parents, Farida and Ebrahim. Set over a 750sqm floor plan, there’s cohesion between both homes, yet each reflects their own style. Mohammed and Fatema’s living room sets the tone for their modern palettes. “We immediately loved this Prudence Caroline print when we saw it and a lot of the colour in the house was inspired by it,” says Mohammed. Another favourite piece is the slick custom entertainment unit by Christopher Blank and Darren James.

KITCHEN Not surprisingly, family life revolves around the

kitchen (below & opposite) where Fatema and Mohammed are often kept busy preparing snacks for Yusuf (all pictured). The island is topped in Sparkling White Corian, with feature panels and cabinetry in spotted-gum veneer to add warmth and texture. Black pendants from LAD Group and stools from Janie Collins Interiors complement the black splashback, while a Gessi gooseneck pull-out tap and a Zip Tap were included for added convenience. “Because the kitchen is open-plan and connected to the dining area, we didn’t want the fridge to be visible, so it’s tucked round the side in a galley area with extra storage, which serves as a scullery,” explains Mohammed.

t’s not every day architect Glenn Bliesner gets a brief to design two houses under one roof, with an entertaining area large enough to accommodate 50 or so for regular family dinners. Yet, that’s exactly what Brisbane couple Mohammed and Fatema wanted. “In our culture, it’s traditional for a son to look after his parents, so when Fatema and I began planning to start our own family, we approached Glenn to build a dream home which was large enough for us all to live,” explains Mohammed. Four years later the house has been built and the family has grown with the arrival of sons Yusuf, two, and little Esa, just three months old. “It just works so well!” says Fatema of the clever connection to Mohammed’s parents Farida and Ebrahim’s home. “After breakfast Yusuf might pop over to his grandparents for a little play before we go out, but he’ll knock on their door. From the beginning it’s always felt like two separate houses, but it’s comforting to know we’re so close.” Design was key in creating a harmonious arrangement that offered the flexibility to both close off and open up the houses, and it was Glenn’s concept of joining two buildings divided by a central atrium and internal gardens that won everyone over. “By combining the layout under one roof, it gave us a much larger shared entertaining area, which was really important,” says Mohammed. “We have Friday night dinners with extended family and a genius part of the design was creating the edges of the raised garden beds in the atrium, so they double as informal

dining tables. We just bring out chairs and sit around under the palms.” With an impressive soaring ceiling and statuesque trees, the atrium also forms the communal entrance, with sliding doors on either side leading to the split-level homes, each with their own kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas and deck. For a cohesive feel, key materials such as flooring, wall colour, tiles and fixtures were kept consistent throughout, yet the team from Darren James Interiors were enlisted to individualise each home with beautiful soft furnishings, custom pieces and artwork. “You can definitely tell who lives where,” says Mohammed of the differing styles. “My parents are very traditional and sophisticated, so special pieces they’ve had for 40 years were incorporated into the design, whereas Fatema and I wanted a more contemporary feel and weren’t afraid of bold colour.” A favourite finish is spotted gum, which was used generously on the floor, ceiling and walls to deliver warmth and depth, while texture was introduced with draping curtains, oversized rugs, potted greenery and accents in bright pops of blue and orange. Thrilled with every element of the home, from its location to its timeless style, it’s evident the most important aspect is the home’s connectivity. “My brother Ismail and his wife Sohaila live just a few houses down, and it’s lovely for Yusuf and Esa to be surrounded by so much family,” says Mohammed. “The beauty of the home’s design is we can lead separate lives, but easily come together as often as we want.”

Frosted glass doors on either side of the central atrium stack back to reveal the kitchens of both homes (above). “All my mum really wanted was a big bench, because she loves cooking,” says Mohammed of the luxuriously long island, which like their own, is formed in Sparkling White Corian with integrated sinks and grooves for draining dishes. ATRIUM

For Fatema, Yusuf and his grandmother Farida (all pictured, top right) the living arrangement enables easy catch-ups. “It means we have babysitters handy,” says Fatema, “but we’ve never wanted it to feel like an obligation or expectation for Mohammed’s parents to look after the kids. love seeing the boys whenever they want.” A regular get-together is Friday night dinners, often enjoyed around the timber garden ledges in the atrium. Floors finished in Triboo Smoke tiles and walls in Lava Stone Bricks from Austral Bricks provide the space with a modern touch. DINING TABLE

From the artwork and dining chairs through to smaller pieces such as these resin bowls from Dinosaur Designs (right), the selections made by David James and Elissa Greer of Darren James Interiors won over the couple. “They instantly understood our style and we loved everything they chose,” says Fatema. “For budget reasons, we did consider dropping a few things, but in the end went with the lot!” adds Mohammed.

DINING ROOM

The warm tones of spotted gum on the floor and ceiling define the dining zone in the open-plan space. A marble-topped dining table from King Living, teamed with black Carver Chairs from Stylecraft, is large enough for “smaller family get-togethers”, says Mohammed. Sliding doors open on to a side garden where tiger grass and a mix of tropical plants provide greenery – and if the afternoon sun gets too harsh, custom charcoal blockout curtains can be pulled across. “We wanted something which had a linen look without the price tag and found a great fabric from Basford Brands Filigree range, which is UV stable,” says Fatema.

MAIN BEDROOM

When planning the orientation of the main bedroom (opposite), the couple had their sights set on capturing the leafy vista at the back of their block. To maximise the outlook, a bank of louvred windows runs along the southern wall, with a bench seat below topped in upholstered cushions in Unique Fabrics’ Hillside. Spotted-gum detailing on the wall adds a textural element and a touch of warmth. ENSUITE

The couple’s ensuite pairs black and white to great effect (top left & right). At the bathing end, a Caroma Gem freestanding bath from Harvey Norman Commercial with a floor spout is surrounded by Atlas Concorde ‘Marvel’ Calacatta tiles from Uptiles. A trailing ivy atop a plant stand thrives in the abundant natural light,

while soft towels from Saarde add a little luxe. In contrast, the opposite end of the ensuite has a wall of Tribeca Charcoal tiles paired with a floating vanity in Polytec Black Wenge that is topped with black Caesarstone. “We used the same mix of materials in all the bathrooms as we thought you can’t go wrong with classic black and white,” explains Mohammed. YUSUF’S ROOM

Neutral tones create a serene backdrop for two-year-old Yusuf’s bedroom (left). To enliven walls painted in Dulux Snowy Mountain Quarter, Fatema used wall stickers from The Lovely Wall Co. en masse to resemble wallpaper. Alongside Yusuf’s Boori timber cot stands a teepee from Cattywampus – it’s a chill-out zone filled with comfy cushions where he loves to sit and play.

A favourite spot in the warmer months is the well-equipped outdoor area overlooking the home’s verdant backdrop and lap pool. Who lives here? Mohammed, a company director; his wife Fatema, an occupational therapist; children Yusuf, two, and baby Esa; and Mohammed’s parents, Ebrahim and Farida. What is the best thing about sharing a home with your parents? Mohammed: “Having them close by means we can always be sure they’re okay as they get older and they also get to spend so much time with their grandchildren, which they love.” Biggest splurge? Fatema: “The amazing TV cabinet designed by Darren James and Christopher Blank. It’s so functional and perfectly suits the living area.” How do you like to entertain? Mountain rising up behind it, the Cape Town home of Tracy and Russell and their three children was built for serenity, with moments of quiet solitude easy to find within its sprawling footprint. “I was worried that, when finished, the house would look too big and imposing,” says Tracy. “Russell found this highly amusing considering the size of the mountain behind us!” Though the abode is utterly tranquil, the family live far from a hermitic existence, with the open-plan living spaces designed for entertaining. The living room flows to the dining area, then out to the terrace, where a dining table by local designer James Mudge and a B&B Italia sofa (for similar, try Space) offer plenty of room for people to mingle.

LIVING ROOM

“The living room is my favourite part of the house,” says Tracy. A hand-painted green feature wall, a Muuto ‘Under The Bell’ felt pendant lamp (available at Surrounding), and potted plants in woven baskets help create a warm and cosy vibe in this space. “We’ve always been mad about indoor plants but the squareness of the rooms has brought on an all-out indoor plant craze in both of us,” says Tracy with a laugh. “It’s amazing how the greenery really softens the square lines.”

rivacy and connection: they’re two conflicting values, yet Tracy and Russell appear to have found both in the modern family home they have built on the slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. “I know this may sound trite as it’s just bricks and mortar – or wood and stone – but building this home forced us to reflect on the contradictory nature of those things we hold most dear; namely, being together as a family and entertaining with loved-ones, versus a real need for solitude and being in nature,” explains Tracy. The couple bought this stunning plot four years ago when they were looking for a home that could accommodate their growing brood of children and pets, which comprises 15-year-old Anabella, twins River and Sofia, both seven, plus two dogs and a cat. “We’d outgrown our previous home nearby and were looking for a property with a garden level with the living areas,” says Russell. This seemingly simple goal was actually nigh-on impossible, due to the hilly topography of their chosen suburb. And so, when this site in a prime wind-free pocket became available, they saw the potential to create something spectacular. “The original house was situated at the back of the then largely terraced site, so there was little to no garden to speak of,” says Russell. “Our eureka moment was when we realised that, by building a new house to the front of the plot, we could level the back garden to become an extension of the reserve behind us.” Entrusted to solve the complexities of the site, architect Adrian Mallitte of Salt + Pepper Design drew up plans for a sprawling three-level home that somehow appears to sit low and light on the land. You enter the house via a steep driveway into a generous entrance hall with access to Russell’s wine cellar. From there you ascend up to the bedroom level, which comprises five bedrooms and a ‘pyjama lounge’. The top floor is where all the living and

entertaining happens, with the lounge, dining, kitchen, TV room and study all looking out to views of the garden and mountain. “A sense of space was really important to us,” says Russell. “Wherever possible we did away with walls to open things up.” This was as much about embracing the luxury of space as accommodating the needs of their three children, who can run, play and even ride their scooters inside. “We’re not precious about walls and floors,” says Tracy. “The house is not a showroom, but a canvas for our life.” The pair are passionate cooks, so the design of the kitchen was sacrosanct. “We’re both territorial cooks, so the layout needed to accommodate the different ways we like to occupy the space,” says Russell. “While some couples negotiate around separate beds and duvets, ours was around separate ovens!” quips Tracy. The couple’s collection of art, furniture and personal possessions completes the home, complementing the magnificent natural setting. Tracy credits interior designer Lynne Harris-Whitfield as the alchemist who brought their disparate tastes and personalities together. “Lynne’s a master of relaxed living,” says Tracy. “Everything she does is about making the moment more enjoyable.” With this kind of attention to detail, it’s no wonder the house is the relaxed, organised and creative haven the couple craved.

DINING ROOM “You could say we’re experts on what makes a good dining

table,” says enthusiastic entertainer Tracy. “We needed to fill the length of the room, so we opted for a 10-seater table by local designer James Mudge.” The table is matched with dining chairs by John Vogel (for similar, try Weylandts) and crowned by a Muuto ‘Under The Bell’ pendant (top). The rest of the space is furnished with a green console and a floor mirror (for similar, try the ‘Norm’ mirror from Urban Couture).

STUDY “Russell is both a perfectionist and a workaholic, so he spent an extraordinary amount of time getting this room right – he would never get any

work done in there if it wasn’t to his liking,” says Tracy of the cosy, wood-panelled study (above). Separated from the living spaces by glass doors, the room is elegant enough to be in full view, yet is fully soundproofed, in case either Tracy or Russell needs to work without the background hum of family life. The room has a distinctly mid-century modern flavour, with the warmth of walnut timber and a sofa in burnt sienna, as well as Eames office chairs (available from Living Edge), vintage Fase desk lamps and Brokis ‘Shadows’ pendant lights (stocked by Huset).

LAYERED STYLE When Jane and her husband, Jason, moved

into their Brisbane home with their two daughters, Annabel and Rosie, it was a blank canvas ready to be stamped with personality and style. Rather than aim for a specific look, Jane’s brief for interior designer Melinda Boundy of Melinda Boundy Design was all about creating welcoming spaces filled with unique pieces. “The benefit in using an interior designer is that they provide a different perspective,” says homeowner Jane. Sticking with a crisp scheme, retro style cane furniture adds a vintage touch in the living room alongside Molmic sofas, with shades of blue introduced through books, Chinoiseriestyle ceramics, custom upholstery and a Bayliss rug (below). For similar cane furniture, try Lincoln Brooks. At the entryway (opposite) Archie is a welcoming furry face atop the front stairs. hen talking real estate, proximity to water is often at the top of the list and for many years Jane and her husband, Jason, loved their home that sat on the banks of Brisbane’s river. Things changed though with the arrival of daughters Annabel and Rosie, now 10 and eight. “The yard wasn’t fenced, so I often worried about them wandering down to the river without us,” explains Jane. “During the 2011 floods there was also a real risk our house would be inundated, so we moved all our furniture from the ground floor to the upper level. Fortunately, the water didn’t make it inside, but for me it tainted the experience of living on the river.” As luck would have it, a house came up for sale on the same street, a little further back from the water, yet still boasting views of the river, something the couple was keen to keep. “We went and had a look and were sold,” says Jane. “It meant we were still by the river, but at a comfortable distance.” Moving in over Christmas 2014, the expansive pool and kitchen were an instant hit, and with what she describes as a “big, beige blank canvas”, Jane began dreaming of changes that would make the home distinctly theirs. Renovated by the previous owners who laid great neutral foundations, it was just finishing touches such as furniture, lighting and window dressings that needed reworking. And the timing was perfect: the couple were ready to upgrade all the furniture they’d had since their children were born.

Enlisting the expertise of Melinda Boundy of Melinda Boundy Design, the brief was for a comfortable family home with a timeless colour palette, filled with interesting pieces and a hint of glamour. “I’d never used an interior designer before, but because I like a lot of different styles I wanted guidance to keep the overall look cohesive,” says Jane. “Melinda was wonderful in steering me in the right direction.” Key changes included beautiful timber joinery in the girls’ bedrooms and an upstairs corner cleverly transformed into an intimate library area to house the family’s extensive book collection. The darker tones here were carried through to the main bedroom, providing a moody backdrop for a custom upholstered bed and timber side tables. “One of the advantages in working with Melinda was her ability to source pieces of furniture you don’t see every day,” says Jane. “I remember the day after all the new furnishings were installed I stepped back and thought, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s all so nice.’” With the bulk of their time in spring and summer spent outdoors, the alfresco area around the pool was also beautifully furnished to create an outdoor room, filled with chic cane furniture topped with Tommy Bahama cushions and oversized pots of lush palms. Now, four years after they made the move, the couple has no regrets. “At this point in our lives this house really suits us,” says Jane. “It’s just easy. An added benefit of staying on the same street is that my sister, Emma, and her family live on the street, too, just four houses down.” Making this home truly a family one.

LIVING ROOM “The dark navy cabinet paired with gold accents is not something I would have thought of myself,” says Jane of this piece (top left)

chosen by interior designer Melinda. “But I like that it brings a glamorous element to the casual living room.” Melinda sourced the drawers from Regency Distribution, the gold tray and decanters from Boyd Blue and the table lamp from Bloomingdales. The relaxed classic lines of Hudson sofas from Molmic were a timeless choice for the room (opposite), with removable custom slip covers perfect for a family with young children and fluffy couch-loving dog. To complement the grey, throw cushions in Duralee fabric pick up the blue tones that feature throughout the room. HOMES

BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL From the

moment Sheridan and Cameron decided to renovate, they were sold on the idea of an open-plan kitchen, living and dining domain. Tempered by the neutrality of hardwood flooring and walls in Wattyl crisp Stowe White, the core entertaining space is enlivened by colour via a magenta Jardan cushion on the ‘Felix’ King Living sofa (below). The couple’s children, Lola and Angus, and Sybil the dog, get comfy on the customised floating day bed by Turnco (right), decked out in Laine ‘Conforto’ fabric in zesty Comfy and misty Galore.

L

ike most homeowners embarking on a renovation, Sheridan and Cameron had wrapped up their wish list: room for their young family to grow, a contemporary extension with a connection to the outdoors, plentiful storage and a base palette of neutral tones and organic finishes. These were some of the key boxes to be ticked by the couple’s architect, Andrew Wilson of WARC Studio Architects, for their Melbourne home. But then came an additional request. “Cameron asked Andrew for ‘some surprise and delight’,” says Sheridan. “He said to Andrew: ‘There may not be a lot of opportunity to achieve that with the style of the house and the budget, but we’d love to see it wherever possible.’ ” With touches of the unexpected around almost every corner of the 1920s home, the brief was certainly met. From the dark steel-clad hallway, mysteriously luring visitors into the light-bathed entertaining domain, to delicious splashes of colour and even a century-old exposed brick wall presenting like an oversized artwork in the courtyard, this is a home in which joys unfold well beyond the front door. For the family – including Lola, 10, and eight-year-old Angus – the renovation was quite a while coming. “We lived here for a really long time beforehand,” says Sheridan, a make-up artist. “It’s an old Spanish Mission-Californian bungalow and it was looking a little tired – it was dark with rather small, boxy rooms. By the time we were finally ready to start the renovation, we knew exactly what we wanted and what would be best for our family.” Sitting on a compact 367-square-metre block close to the beach and local shops, the home’s considered design puts every bit of space to effective use. Its graceful beginnings have been carefully honoured and restored, while the stylish addition to the building places an emphasis on relaxed living for both adults and children.

“We really love the original appeal and character of the facade and front rooms, as well as the modern extension with the large open spaces at the back,” explains Sheridan. “It’s a home that has different areas for people to retreat to, which makes it very functional. Andrew was fabulous in that he was very much aware of our budget and remained conscious of it.” Given the scale of the project, the family moved into a rental property for the duration, while builder Dwell Developments undertook the construction works. “It simply wasn’t feasible to live here through the renovation,” says Sheridan. “When we moved back in, I couldn’t believe all the space that had been created. The house works really well for all of us – even Sybil seems to love it!” Indeed, for the homeowner, who admits to being “anything but a serial renovator”, this latest chapter in her family’s life is only just beginning. “This will be the house that the kids grow up in,” she says. “We’re not going anywhere.” KITCHEN Daylight pours through skylights into the gorgeous new kitchen

A three-metre island bench topped in hardy Silestone White Storm is the centrepiece of the food zone, with black Hay ‘About A Stool’ seating from Cult adding versatility. “One of Cameron’s stipulations was that the island bench be free of a sink and I’m so glad that’s the case,” says Sheridan. “It means the island is always clear as a serving or eating space.” Australian chestnut panelling from Tait Timber & Hardware on the island’s front segues seamlessly from the flooring, while sliding barn doors conceal the butler’s pantry and study (top left & opposite). DINING ROOM In the dining room that also adjoins the kitchen (top right), is an original Eames table base found on Ebay and customised with a white ply-laminate top. The dramatic ‘Floating Boats’ painting by Graeme Altmann introduces some subtle colour. “This was a gift from Cameron’s parents when we got married and we love it,” says Sheridan. A ‘Ned’ bamboo pendant by Giffin Design delivers a modern sleekness.

INSIDE STORY SHERIDAN & CAMERON’S HOME

Who lives here? Sheridan, a make-up artist; her husband Cameron, who works in finance; daughter Lola, 10, son Angus, eight; and Sybil the dog. Did you and Cameron agree on the finishes? Sheridan: “We actually did. There’s a little bit of give and take. Give them a win and you can have a win too! And although I love neutrals, the bright pops of colour we injected with the interiors can be easily changed.” Did you encounter any unexpected setbacks? “The soil in this area is quite sandy and claylike. We learnt that the Japanese maple doesn’t like to sit in water, so they had to dig down really deep and add a pump to ensure its survival.” Is there anything you’d change, given your time again? “Possibly the white floor tiles in the bathroom, as they’re a little hard to keep looking clean.”

SPRING CLEAN:

SEASONAL SWEEP IT’S THE SEASON TO ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES, TACKLE JOBS AROUND THE HOME AND SET UP SIMPLE ROUTINES TO HELP KEEP THINGS LOOKING TIPTOP WORDS KYLIE JACKES

TO HELP LAUNCH you into springcleaning mode, we’ve compiled a to-do list of jobs you can knock over, weekly, monthly and annually. By regularly targeting zones bit by bit, you’ll be impressed with the results and, best of all, your home will stay cleaner longer. And try our DIY recipes to help get your rooms looking – and smelling – the best they ever have.

Start with the most public of areas – the lounge room.

Target bookshelves, here and left, that are magnets for dust.

LIVING ROOM

once a week

• Give the carpet a thorough vacuum and stretch under the furniture where dust tends to hide.

• Wipe bookshelves and consoles with a lightly damp cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of lemongrass essential oil for a welcoming aroma.

• Remove items that don’t belong in the zone and make the sofa inviting by plumping cushions and folding throw rugs.

“Decluttering is beneficial as you become mindful of what you already have and allow room for the future” ~ Shana Danon, Founder, Organised Clutter

once a month

• Give your fabrics a wash. Pop ROOM SPRAY:

Mix in a spray bottle: 1 tablespoon vodka 6 tablespoons water 20-40 drops of sweet cinnamon oil

things such as cushion covers in the washing machine and handwash more delicate items.

• Clean windows inside and out. If you’re looking to avoid harsh chemicals, try the DIY window cleaner recipe from founder Jody Allen of Stay At Home Mum – turn to page 122.

• Floor rugs benefit from a good airing. Shake them out and sling them over the line for a day of fresh air. The sunlight will also kill pesky dust mites.

once a year

Give your sofa and carpet a deep steam clean. Use a DIY machine or call in the professionals.

• Treat timber furniture to a fresh coat of wax and maintain leather furniture with conditioning cream.

• Arm yourself with a damp cloth to clean dust from fan blades and air-conditioner vents.

White finishes, such as these and below, deserve extra attention.

KITCHEN

once a week

• Clear surfaces of detritus such as bills, post and children’s toys and swap out tea towels for a fresh set.

• Give stainless-steel appliances a gentle wipe with a specific cleaner or a mix of water and vinegar (see DIY recipe from owner Rowena Jongejan of Family Clean, below right).

• Clean the bin and surrounding floor or cupboard area where it’s kept, to stay on top of hygiene and odours.

once a month

• Purge the fridge of forgotten food, wipe shelves and wash out crisper drawers. For sparkling results, run a dishwasher cleaning solution through your machine.

• Remove exhaust fan vents and give them a thorough soak and scrub in hot soapy water.

bicarbonate of soda and half a lemon in the back of the fridge will absorb odours and keep it smelling clean” ~ Jody Allen, Founder, Stay At Home Mum

once a year

• Deep clean the freezer and target seals with a eucalyptus or lemon-based disinfectant, says Rowena Jongejan. “An old toothbrush is great for getting into grooves, followed by a cotton pad soaked with oil of cloves,” she says. “This will kill mould spores, rather than just disguise them with bleach.”

• Organise an annual pest-control treatment to keep the creepy-crawlies at bay.

• Reorganise the pantry, tossing food and spices that are past their use-by date. Check if your storage system needs improving with pull-out baskets, tiered shelves or additional hooks.

once a week

• Clear the floor of stray laundry and shoes, then get to work with the vacuum cleaner.

• Wash bedlinen with a cup of antibacterial eucalyptus oil in each load, says owner Rowena Jongejan of Family Clean.

• Tidying your bedside table will restore order and a spritz of room spray will invigorate the senses. For a home-made room spray try Rowena’s recipe (page 117) using sweet cinnamon oil by Malka.

once a month

• Give surfaces a thorough wipe to bust dust on louvres, dressers, skirting boards and bedsides.

• Improve the quality of your view and natural light with a window clean. For glass louvres, try a microfibre mitt.

• Sliding-door tracks are prime grime traps. Jody Allen of Stay At Home Mum suggests tackling them with an old toothbrush to loosen debris before vacuuming with a narrow attachment.

Don’t forget to clean what’s under the bed as well as around it.

once a year

• Get the bed professionally cleaned and flip the mattress. It will improve its longevity and comfort.

• Founder Shana Danon of Organised Clutter advises assessing your wardrobe seasonally. “Autumn and spring are perfect times to consider donating unworn items from the year before and free up prime cupboard real estate,” she says.

EXPERT GUIDE:

CLEAR VISION FROM PLACEMENT TO PANES, THE RIGHT WINDOWS CAN MAKE YOUR HOME LIGHTER, WARMER AND MORE JOYOUS TO BE IN

PHOTOGRAPHY GREG COX/BUREAUX

STORY SHELLEY TUSTIN

WINDOWS CAN HAVE a profound effect on how we feel about our home; they let in light, admit cooling breezes and frame views, all while connecting us to the outside and protecting us from the elements. Style, size and positioning are key factors to bear in mind when planning your glazing options, so read on for a masterclass in window selection.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Create a cosy reading nook by installing a window seat. Add cushions and throws for an extra layer of romance.

A sense of placement Windows can be a phenomenal tool in the battle to keep heating and cooling costs down without compromising on comfort

COOL IT “Even the smallest window in the correct place can make a world of difference in terms of natural cross ventilation,” says architect Angela Jamison of Jamison Architects, who strategically positions windows to capture breezes and reduce the need for airconditioning. HEAT IT UP In winter, windows can be vital for natural heating, but more is not necessarily better – the key is strategic placement. “Windows protected with eaves, overhangs or awnings to the north are great because this is the best solar aspect for natural lighting,” says Angela Jamison. “In cooler months, when the sun is lower in the sky, it allows the sun in to heat your home naturally, while in summertime, when the sun is higher, the overhangs prevent direct sun coming in.” Avoid west-facing windows if you can to cut out the blazing heat of the western sun. BLEND IN Though furnishing a room comes further down the track, it’s important to consider at least the basic layout now as your window placement will affect your furnishings and how you’ll use the room. This might mean opting for a half-height window with an entertainment unit underneath, or choosing a high window to allow wall space for a bed.

“Always consider where to place windows so that a room can be functionally and appropriately furnished” ~ Angela Jamison, Architect, Jamison Architects

PRIVACY POINTS There’s no point in having large windows that need to be permanently covered for privacy. The solution here might be as simple as putting in a skylight or clerestory window with a view to the sky rather than next door’s living room. “Some areas of the home require more privacy,” says director of marketing Athina Solomou of Trend Windows. “Textured, translucent or acid-etched glass allow for high-level light transmittance while obscuring the view from the outside.”

Louvres are effective at controlling airflow and light, which can help reduce electricity and heating costs.

Replacing your splashback with a window is a great way to add extra light to your kitchen.

SIZE MATTERS A fabulous outlook is a precious asset and the right window can really make the most of this. “Windows can be sized to frame a particular view – sometimes it’s more dramatic when it’s framed,” says Angela Jamison of Jamison Architects. “Your focus might be a point in the distance or a tree or sculpture in your garden.” A window can also be used to create a particular aspect, positioned to highlight an internal courtyard or other small space that can be turned into a picturesque private oasis.

frame it When choosing the right window to fill the space, there are several factors to consider

SLIDE AND STACK The perfect way to blur the lines between indoors and out is with glass doors that function as walls, says marketing manager Christine Evans of Stegbar. “Sliding and stacking doors allow for large expanses of glass which maximise views and creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor rooms,” she says. Because they open sideways, with panels gliding alongside one another, they’re a great space saver, and can also retract into walls to fully maximise the opening.

Give your home a cohesive look and feel by choosing frames that match your interior scheme.

MATERIAL MIX Frames come in different materials and colours, and what you choose will depend on several factors, including the style of your home, your budget and any maintenance issues. “If you’re looking for windows for a period home, choose timber windows and doors to match the original heritage,” suggests Christine Evans. “As for modern homes, aluminium are great to create a bold look with high performance.” Aluminium windows are also a low-maintenance winner – they can be powder-coated in a range of hues and never need to be painted again. However, other factors can come into play – bushfire-prone areas for example, are awarded a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating based on the relative risk of the site, and properties with a high BAL may be required to have metal windows only.

“Windows can be an opportunity to introduce an element of delight and practicality – some windows we just gravitate towards because they are inviting for one reason or another!” ~ Angela Jamison, Architect, Jamison Architects

Well thought-out window placement can bring the outdoors in and create a calming, airy effect.

MAKE IT WORK Think about functionality. “Ensure the window style matches its purpose, whether that’s louvres for ventilation or sashless to show off breathtaking views,” says Christine Evans of Stegbar. Bi-fold windows concertina together to completely open up a space to the outdoors, and are perfect for serveries. “A keen entertainer’s must-have, they create a functional opening for passing food and drinks to your guests,” adds director of marketing Athina Solomou of Trend Windows. “They also make a beautiful alternative to a fixed window in a breakfast bar or window seat.”

D E S I GN F I L E Install overhead windows and enjoy dinner under the stars. Or grab a cup of tea and delight in the view (right).

Glass houses Metallic frames are so on-trend right now and can be easily repeated throughout your interior scheme.

Glazing technology continues to advance at pace, with specialty products for energy efficiency, noise reduction and security

CLEAN CREATION Self-cleaning glass (such as Viridian’s ‘Renew’) may sound like sorcery, but in fact, it’s simple science; a special coating reacts with sunlight to break down dirt and allows rainwater to spread evenly across the glass to wash it away. This makes this type of glass perfect for beachfront homes, which are assailed by salt, and for inaccessible windows (such as skylights). SOUND AND VISION If neighbourhood noise is an issue, acoustic laminated glass or double glazing will reduce sound levels. “Compression-style windows (awning and casement) will seal better and keep more noise out than sliding windows,” says marketing manager Christine Evans of Stegbar.

“We are seeing a trend towards larger window openings and the use of fixed glazing to create large walls of glass, letting the outside into the home” ~ Athina Solomou, Director of Marketing, Trend Windows

GLAZE IT Homes in temperate regions can get away with single glazing, but those in areas exposed to extreme heat or cold should consider double glazing or a ‘low-e’ glass (which has a laminated coating to minimise heat transfer). They will recoup the increased costs in energy savings.

UNDER COVER CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDOW DRESSING FOR EACH ROOM IN YOUR HOME TO CREATE INSTANT WOW STORY SHELLEY TUSTIN

WINDOW COVERINGS such as curtains, shutters and blinds serve both a practical purpose – sealing in heat and offering privacy – and an aesthetic one in completing your interior scheme. Here is everything you need to know about choosing the right dressings for your home.

Draped curtains create a sense of romance and elegance as well as privacy.

Window placement is an important factor when choosing coverings.

sun direction Look at the way your window is facing and consider what sort of light it will receive – and how much you want to let in. West– and to a lesser extent, east–facing windows are a nightmare for letting in roasting hot sunlight and really need some sort of window-covering solution. Also, keep in mind how sunlight affects your covers. “Have an awareness of the materiality of your curtains or blinds, and whether it may fade due to the orientation of the room,” says interior designer Simone Haag. Outside awnings are useful. “External shading reduces heat transfer through windows by up to 90 per cent and a whopping 88 per cent of a home’s heat gain in summer occurs through windows,” says national marketing manager Jenny Brown of Luxaflex. Internally, insulating blinds can be used to control heat transfer. On the flipside, south-facing windows are gloomy in winter – not the sort of effect you’d want to add to with heavy drapes! Instead, opt for floaty sheers or light-hued shutters or blinds, which bounce light off the blades to brighten a room. To create a lighter look, Simone Haag suggests going easy on the amount of fabric you use. “I would say the days of curtains pooling on the floor are over,” she says. “Just a kiss of fabric on the floor is best.”

material choice Carefully consider the location you’re dressing. “Avoid heavy fabric curtains in rooms that have high humidity, such as kitchens and bathrooms,” advises Jenny Brown. “Over time, they may become damp and start moulding.” Instead, think practicality. “The ‘wet zones’ of the home require moisture-resistant blinds such as those made with PVC or polyester – perfect for any areas exposed to water and steam,” says national buyer Alice Burney of Bunnings Warehouse. Similarly, wooden shutters can warp or peel in damp environments – polyresin shutters are a good solution in such problematic spaces.

External awnings reduce the heat, both inside and out.

Colour Ways “Consistency among rooms is key,” says interior designer Simone Haag. “This is not to say all coverings have to be the same, they just have to be cohesive.” So, you could have plain blinds in one room in a single colour, which could be the base hue for a curtain pattern in another room. For a sophisticated, restrained look try tailoring the colour of your curtains or blinds to the shade of your walls, and if you have more than one window treatment, look to coordinate them so the effect isn’t a hot mess; blinds softened by sheers in a similar tone is a popular style that looks wonderful in living rooms and bedrooms.

Create an open indoor-outdoor zone by adding awnings, shutters and blinds, so you can extend and close off the area depending on the weather.

Planning a future-proof smart home? Then the latest trends in window coverings will be right up your alley. Motorised blinds allow you to open and close them at the touch of a button, which is a great party trick, but more importantly, they allow you to schedule the blinds to open and close while you’re out and about, increasing the home’s energy efficiency. “Scheduling the window coverings in an east or west-facing room first thing in the morning will prevent the heat of the day from entering, and help retain the coolest temperatures from overnight,” explains national marketing manager Jenny Brown of Luxaflex. If budget is an issue, prioritise motorised blinds in the rooms where solar gain is an issue. Or you could go old-school in south and north-facing rooms and enjoy the ritual of drawing the blinds by hand. “There is something very homely about drawing them closed,” says interior designer Simone Haag.

LET THERE BE LIGHT When the original room was chopped in half, the portion allocated to be the new main bathroom was windowless. To allow in natural light, a window area above the bath was designed, yet with a tight heritage covenant on the house, the window style had to be approved by council. “I wanted black aluminium frames for the casements, but council specified white timber surrounds which were in keeping with the home’s original windows,” explains Carmel, who ended up adding her own touch with black accessories.

A

lthough GIA Renovations interior designer Carmel creates stunning spaces for a living, when it came to her own family bathroom in the home she shares with husband Ben and sons Oliver, four, and Alfie, one, she admits the pressure was on. “As our forever home, I wanted it to be just right so I considered about 10 different palettes,” she says. “In the end I chose finishes and fixtures I’ve always loved.” Part of a larger renovation to the couple’s Melbourne home, the property’s Victorian heritage inspired the classic black and white palette. Florence Broadhurst wallpaper and a new window framing a wall of ivy in the garden incorporate Carmel’s love of green, while round lights and accessories add playfulness, which Oliver and Alfie have given a big thumbs up to. “The boys think it’s fun,” says Carmel. “Ollie particularly likes the wallpaper.” ORIGINAL ROOM: A dated 1980s hotel-style bathroom with lots of heavy marble, mirrors and no storage. TIME FRAME: A six-week design phase, followed by a six-week build. WHY THE MAKEOVER? “The house only had one large bathroom, so we divided the original space into two, which allowed us to create a separate ensuite and bathroom,” says Carmel. “This is far more functional for a family of four.” THE WORKS: The room was completely gutted and the layout changed to suit the dimensions of the carved up space. MAJOR CHANGES: Everything is new, from the floor tiles to the fixtures. The window space was created above the bath and a new doorway to the room was added. LESSONS LEARNED: “If you’re organised, don’t discount January as a time to renovate,” says Carmel. “People often think everyone will be on holidays, but I had all the materials delivered on site before the job started and the renovation went really quickly and smoothly. Because it was after the mad Christmas rush and there were no time pressures, all the trades were in a good mood, too.”

“I love Florence Broadhurst prints and decided to create the whole room around it,” says Carmel about the green Florence Broadhurst ‘Fingers’ wallpaper from Materialised adorning the western wall. The matt black towel rails are from the Phoenix ‘Radii’ range at Reece.

ACCENTS Black features such as Phoenix tapware, vanity handles and a black stool from Temple & Webster pack a punch. “I just love matt black accessories and the way they contrast against crisp white,” enthuses Carmel. “They’re incredibly forgiving and unlike chrome, they don’t show water marks.” TILE FILE The classic white handmade subway tiles from Minted Tiles are a nod to the home’s heritage. Aesthetics and functionality prompted Carmel to run them the full height of the wall. “Taking tiles to the ceiling looks neater, is more durable and while the initial outlay might be more expensive than a painted plaster wall, you don’t have the ongoing costs of having to repaint every four years.”

DESIGNER TIP

The recessed niche provides a sleek storage ledge for bathroom products.

Go for a galley layout. “Keep all the plumbing on one wall. If you’re renovating, it will often save time and costs and it’s a great use of space,” explains Carmel. “I like to arrange fixtures in order of usage, with the toilet and basin closer to the entry and the bath at the end of the room to form a stunning backdrop.” And, she adds, “I always advise people to embrace colour and pattern in the bathroom as well, as these are the unique choices that make the space yours. You’re only in the room for an hour or so a day, it’s the place to be bold and have some fun with finishes.”

WET ZONE Partly inspired by traditional Japanese bathrooms where the wet area is segregated, a single pane of glass defines the zone for the shower and a freestanding bath. “It works so well for the kids,” explains Carmel. “Ollie loves to have a little splash with the handheld shower and it can also stretch over to the bath, which is great when the kids wash their hair. When they step out of the bath, water just drips in the shower area.” The layout also maximises a compact space. “The footprint of the shower floor is only 800mm x 1800mm, but it still feels spacious up the top where you need it,” says the designer. COOL CURVES Carmel had dreamt of using the round ‘Lucciola’ wall lights by Flos for a long time and the main bathroom presented the perfect opportunity. To form an eye-catching trio, she teamed them with an LEDlux Disk LED black wall light from Beacon Lighting. The circular theme was carried through to the round ‘Flynn’ mirror from The Shelley Panton Store and custom oversized drawer handles in matt black.

LOOK AT ME VANITY The custom floating vanity by Antic Cabinet Makers is a stand-out feature in the room. An Omvivo ‘Neo’ double wall basin from Reece paired with sleek wall-mounted Phoenix ‘Vivid’ Slimline basin mixers, sits atop cabinetry clad in V-Grooved panelling in a 2-pac satin finish in Resene White Pointer double strength. To maximise storage, Carmel opted for drawers top and bottom, to ensure easy access for towels down low and smaller items like toothbrushes up high. To tie in with the circular mirror and lights, oversized round drawer pulls, which split in two, add a little fun.

PORTUGUESE CHICKEN SKEWERS

Makes 12 2 tsp paprika 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tbsp sriracha hot chilli sauce 2 tsp dried oregano 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tsp sea salt flakes 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp lime juice ¼ cup olive oil 1kg chicken thigh fillets, trimmed, cut into 2cm thick strips

PORTUGUESE CHICKEN SKEWERS

2 limes, quartered Salad leaves and sliced radish, to serve Buttermilk sauce 1 cup buttermilk ⅔ cup whole egg mayonnaise 2 tsp sriracha hot chilli sauce 2 tbsp chopped coriander

1. Combine paprika, coriander, sriracha, oregano, sugar, salt and garlic in a large bowl. Stir in juice and oil. Add chicken and stir until combined. Allow to marinate for 2 hours or overnight. 2. Soak 24 x 16cm wooden skewers in a dish of water for 10 minutes. This will help prevent them burning during grilling. Using 2 skewers for each, thread chicken on evenly to make 12 skewers. 3. Heat an oiled barbecue or chargrill plate over a medium heat. Add chicken skewers, in two batches, and cook, turning occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes or until cooked through. 4. Cook the cut side of lime quarters for about 1-2 minutes each side or until just charred. 5. To make buttermilk sauce, whisk all ingredients in a medium bowl until smooth. 6. Serve chicken skewers with lime wedges, sauce and combined salad leaves and radish.

PORK CUTLETS WITH MUSTARD CRÈME SAUCE & RAINBOW SLAW

Serves 4 4 x 275g French trimmed pork cutlets Salt and cracked black pepper 2 tbsp olive oil Oven-baked French fries, to serve Mustard crème sauce ⅓ cup store-bought sweet mustard pickle (piccalilli) 60g cornichons, chopped

2 red eschallots, finely chopped (50g) ½ cup crème fraîche Rainbow slaw 1 medium bulb beetroot, peeled 1 large carrot, peeled 1 Lebanese cucumber 3 green onions, cut into long, thin strips

1. Season pork. Heat oil on a large chargrill or barbecue plate over a medium heat. Cook pork for about 5-6 minutes each side or until cooked through. Allow to rest for 3 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, to make mustard crème sauce, combine mustard pickle, cornichons and eschallots in a small bowl. Add crème fraîche and stir to combine. Set aside. 3. To make rainbow slaw, using a shredding tool, shred beetroot, carrot and flesh of cucumber into long matchsticks. Gently toss beetroot, carrot, cucumber and onion in a bowl just before serving. 4. Serve pork dolloped with mustard crème sauce. Accompany with fries and rainbow slaw.

E N T E RTA I N GRILLED SWEET POTATO & RED ONION SALAD WITH MINT DRESSING

Serves 6 ⅓ cup French puy green lentils (optional) 2 medium sweet potatoes (1.2kg), peeled 3 red onions (350g) ¼ cup olive oil 1 tbsp chopped thyme leaves 2 cloves garlic, crushed 80g Greek feta, crumbled Small mint leaves, to serve

Herb dressing ½ cup firmly packed mint leaves ¼ cup Italian parsley leaves ¼ cup olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tsp honey 2 tbsp water Salt and cracked black pepper, to season

1. Rinse lentils with cold water. Cook in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for about 20-25 minutes or until tender. Drain and rinse under cold water. 2. Cut sweet potatoes into 1cm-thick slices. Place half of the sweet potato in a shallow, microwave-safe bowl with 1cm water. Cover with a wet piece of absorbent kitchen paper. Microwave on high for about 5 minutes or until tender when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife. Repeat with remaining sweet potato. Drain. 3. Cut onions in half lengthways and peel away outer leaf, leaving core attached (this will keep onion together while cooking). Cut onion halves into 3 wedges. Place onion and sweet potato in a bowl. 4. Combine oil, thyme and garlic and pour over vegetables. Toss gently until coated. 5. Heat a barbecue or large chargrill plate over a medium to high heat. Add sweet potato slices and onion in two batches, depending on size of grill. Cook, turning once, for about 4-5 minutes each side or until lightly charred. Remove and return to bowl. 6. To make herb dressing, place all ingredients in a blender. Pulse until a finely chopped sauce forms. 7. Add lentils to vegetables in bowl. Add a few spoonfuls of the dressing and gently turn until coated. Spread most of the remaining dressing on a serving plate. Arrange salad on top. Sprinkle with feta and drizzle with remaining dressing. Sprinkle with mint leaves.

THE GARDEN OF JAN AND ROD’S NSW SOUTH COAST HOME looks so entirely at one with the lovely 1850s weatherboard cottage that sits within it that you could be forgiven for thinking its structure and form were of a similar vintage. Details such as the horseshoe-shaped lawns; wide, luxuriant garden beds; neatly clipped box edging deep herbaceous borders; and giant Illawarra figs that date from well before the land around them was cleared for farming, all conspire to lend the verdant expanses an air of venerability, reinforcing that first impression. Yet much of the garden – save for the figs, a couple of stately Norfolk pines and a smattering of remnant perennials – is decades younger, planted only when Jan and Rod moved to the area from the Central Coast, back in 2002. “It was quite a bit different to this,” remembers Jan. “There were a lot of roses, and we didn’t really have an orchard. We’ve changed all the beds around the house, and put a lot of topiaries in.” The couple asked gardener Michael Cooke to help redesign their new surrounds, bringing him on board soon after their move. “We thought we would get the garden established before we did any renovations to the house,” says Jan, who has since added an extension to the cottage. >

count ry life

A small timber breakfast table provides one of many places to sit and enjoy the home’s spectacular views of the surrounding farmland. A linen cushion from Incy Interiors and a ‘Coarse’ linen cushion from Zara Home up the comfort factor, while a linen throw from Città Design is on hand should the day turn chilly.

Rather than a traditionally loose, whimsical style, the areas have a defined structure. “I’m not really a lover of cottage gardens, so we have formality with a little bit of ‘cottage-y garden’ between,” Jan says. It’s a mix that works perfectly in this striking space. Neat lines of box and clipped mounds of hardy westringia and teucrium are juxtaposed with free-form perennials such as rosemary, sage and dierama – otherwise known, rather romantically, as ‘fairy fishing rods’. Traditional favourites include roses and pomegranate, which, says Jan, is typical of the era of the house, as is artemisia, which has been trained into delicate, silvery spheres. “After it rains you just prune it slightly and it’s just like a cloud,” she adds. Although verdant hues from mint through to emerald dominate, there are colour splashes provided by sweeps of salvia and lavender, and a bright show courtesy of a pair of ancient camellia trees. “These camellias have been here since the house, so they’re well over 100 years old,” Jan says. “One is a white and one is a pink, and they’re lovely when the flowers fall down.” Tucked into a fold of rolling hills below an escarpment, the house and garden are somewhat sheltered from the area’s famous southerly winds and even stronger westerlies, but some buffer planting was a necessity. “We really had to think about it,” Jan says. “A lot of soft plants wouldn’t survive when that westerly wind comes through.” The challenge was to provide protection without compromising the home’s stunning country and coastal views. A cherry laurel hedge, kept neatly trimmed by Rod who has become something of a topiary whizz, proves up to the task to the south, while a long length of elaeagnus does the job to the west. Whatever the prevailing wind, however, this garden provides numerous spots to enjoy its myriad shades of green and intermingled fragrance of citrus, mock orange and rose, whether it’s taking morning tea on the verandah or enjoying the peace and quiet of the shady courtyard by the kitchen door. A garden to be enjoyed in all seasons.

n entertainer’s kitchen needs to be highly functional – there’s no room for awkward and poorly planned elements when you’re bustling about, channelling Marco Pierre White. But, while it needs to have the heart of a commercial kitchen, it must also exude warmth and good looks to impress a crowd. A large island bench is a must, serving as a prep area, drinks station or lean-and-chat space. Keep seating localised in the one area, so everyone can have access to the island. Set up plates and cutlery at one end and food at the other for an instant self-serve bufet, perfect for feeding a crowd.

Red wine spills shouldn’t ruin a party, so it’s important the materials in an entertainer’s kitchen can cope. Kaboodle Kitchen’s premium laminate is a hardy option. “It gives your kitchen a contemporary look and feel, provides an easy-toclean matt surface, scuff resistance and anti-fingerprint technology, which means you can be as messy or as clean as you like,” says marketing manager Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen. For a similar look, try Kaboodle’s ‘Charmata’.

KITCHEN: THE CROWD-PLEASER

WELL LIT Great illumination is crucial to food prep areas. For a party space, use a mix of general lighting and under-cabinet task lighting that will spotlight the work surfaces (not the chef), as well as accent lighting to create ambience and atmosphere when guests arrive.

THE BIG CHILL A large fridge is essential and a French-door version is ideal. “The extra width is perfect for parties, storing oversized platters and tall bottles, all at eye level,” says Aimee Tarulli, who leads the interior design department at Melbourne’s Archer Interiors. If possible, add in a separate wine fridge to keep your favourite tipples at the perfect drinking temperature.

“A great kitchen will have AMPLE STORAGE, both under bench and in overheads. PLAN your kitchen well to ensure everything has a spot”

SPLASH OUT Easy wipe-and-go surfaces such as stainless steel and composite stone can be used for both splashbacks and benchtops, while a feature splashback, such as this chic copper version, will add colour and interest to ensure the space doesn’t end up looking too commercial.

IN RANGE Picking a hood which can handle the heat in a busy kitchen is a must. “It’s worth doing research, though, so that you don’t have to battle the noise when your guests are over,” says Sam Zalin of Winning Appliances. Try the Qasair NDCH100L2B rangehood, $2370, Winning Appliances.

MATERIAL MATTERS To get

the look of natural stone, such as marble, without any of the maintenance issues, try a stone composite surface such as White Attica, $900/sqm, Caesarstone.

CALL FOR BACK UP Consider

having a second dishwasher for mid-party clean-ups. “A half-drawer dishwasher under the island to quickly stack and wash glasses and smaller dishes helps keep your benchtop clean and clear,” says interior stylist Aimee. Try the Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer, from $1649.

Incorporating display cabinets and wine racks into your kitchen can create a feature in its own right. “Installing plenty of cabinets and shelving will ensure ample storage to hide crockery and appliances, creating a more usable, clutter-free space, says marketing manager Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen.

HIDDEN HELP Mess is the absolute bane of an entertainer, which is where the butler’s pantry comes in, hiding the worst of the party chaos to be dealt with later. An ideal butler’s pantry will include extra storage, a large sink and plenty of bench space for prep work.

WRITTEN ON THE WALLS The studio roller from George & Willy is not only a convenient avenue to keep a running shopping list going, it’s also the perfect way to present your dinner party menu for all your guests to see – just make sure your handwriting is up to the task. From $211/450mm, George & Willy.

CAFFEINE HIT Whether it’s for an

espresso martini, to get you through the after-party clean-up or to serve unexpected family and friends who drop in unannounced, having good coffee in the house is essential. The ECF01 ’50s style coffee machine in Cream from Smeg ($499) has super-chic Italian style.

WARMING UP Don’t underestimate

the impact of a warm plate – it helps food to retain its heat, and will also make guests feel like they’re dining at a five-star restaurant. New models can also be used for melting chocolate and proving bread. Try the Bosch BIC630NS1A ‘Serie 8’ warming drawer, $828, Appliances Online.

“When designing an entertainer’s kitchen, the appliances always come irst” ~ CARMEL WYLIE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, GIA BATHROOMS & KITCHENS

A second oven is incredibly handy for entertaining, giving you maximum control over your cooking options and more time for guests. Consider making the second model a combi-steam oven for flexibility, like in this GIA-designed space.

FINISHING TOUCH Small details can make or break an entertainer’s kitchen, right down to the cabinet handles, so choose something sleek, wipeable and easy to grab, but that won’t catch you as you steam past with a tray of food.

Good lighting is essential – you want a warm, ambient glow that will flatter, and light fittings that will show of your sense of style. “A statement pendant light will add a wow factor,” says interior stylist Aimee Tarulli of Archer Interiors. Try a pair of David Trubridge ‘Coral’ pendants, as pictured here.

A guest bathroom provides a chance to be adventurous with finishes, as you won’t get sick of looking at them every day! “Mixing textures will take your bathroom from plain to pretty,” says interior stylist Aimee Tarulli of Archer Interiors. “Mix up tiles in size and format and use mosaics to add interest.” Here, classic Kado tapware from Reece is paired with a striking swathe of floor tiles.

f you become a parent, you soon realise children seem to be hungry at all hours, with the bulk of your time at home spent in the kitchen. But these days, it isn’t such a bad thing, as the modern family kitchen has evolved into a multifunctional space that caters for myriad activities, from informal dining and socialising to paperwork and supervising homework. To cope with the rigours of family life the right fit-out is essential.

In a family kitchen where there are often multiple people in and around the zone, open-plan is the way to go. “A popular inclusion is a central island bench, allowing easy access into the kitchen from both sides,” says interior designer Rachael Turner of The Inside Project.

Storage can be maximised by taking cabinetry to the ceiling, as well as using the space above and below your major appliances. Think above the fridge and below the oven. Combination appliance cabinets from Kaboodle Kitchen are a clever and cost-friendly solution.

WORK ZONE Create a multifunctional space to cater for a range of activities, including doing homework, by carving out a nook in the corner that can double as a home office. Be sure to include ample spots to charge laptops, phones and tablets.

FRIDGE SMARTS If your children are constantly opening the fridge door in search of food, look for technology that can adapt the inside temperature accordingly to keep things cool and fresh, such as the ActiveSmart 900mm French Door Slide-in Fridge Model RS90AU1, $6499, from Fisher & Paykel.

SHARING SPACE To enhance functionality and get the whole family involved in food prep, add a second sink on an outer bench. This will allow for multiple people to work at the same time.

THE DOWN LOW As a prime drop zone for spills, products that resemble timber can get you a classic look minus the maintenance concerns. Carpet Court’s Veles Hybrid ooring range combines vinyl and laminate, making it hardy and waterproof.

If space permits, a walk-in pantry is perfect for housing smaller appliances out of sight, yet still accessible for hungry teens to make a snack.

SIT BACK Bar stools with back support positioned around the kitchen island will be appreciated by all – from little ones who won’t fall back, to the doting grandparents who come to visit. Try the ‘Max’ bar stool in Ash, $249, Life Interiors.

here are some of us who enjoy cooking and there are others who barely have time to heat and eat. No matter what camp you fall into, there’s no denying that the kitchen is one of the most important places in the home. “You’ve got to have efficient workflow, surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain and thoughtfully selected appliances,” says design consultant Betty Georghiou of Seabreeze Kitchens. Once you’ve worked out the best fridge-sink-cooktop path for your space, it’s time to consider appliances and materials.

TOP STUFF Not a keen cook? Enjoy the freedom of choosing prettiness over practicality and splash out on natural stone. But, if you’re prone to spillages, pick something easier to clean and maintain. Engineered stone is cheaper, stains and chips less and can be easily repaired. Try Essastone in Matt Ash Concrete.

SPEED CLEAN A dishwasher is a given in any modern kitchen and while many models do have a quick option, Smeg’s Professional Series Under Bench Dishwasher ‘DWAUP346X’ model has a 16-minute, professionalgrade cycle that will have your dishes sparkling in no time, $3650.

etting out the door in the morning needs to be a seamless and efficient affair when you’re a busy person. No-one wants to spend time messing about with wet towels that should be dry, hair dryers that aren’t where they’re supposed to be and trying to apply make-up in a mirror that’s more gloom than glam. Technology, combined with efficient space planning, is what makes a busy bee’s bathroom a joy to use.

Get connected while you’re getting ready with a Bluetoothenabled mirror that allows you to have full audio functionality – and the morning news and traffic report while brushing your teeth. “The best products for time poor people are ones that help to streamline the entire bathroom process,” says marketing lead Daniela Santilli of Reece.

“Great lighting is crucial in a bathroom,” says design consultant Betty Georghiou of Seabreeze Kitchens. Whether it’s for make-up application or post-work relaxation, avoid adding a light directly above the mirror as it will cast deep and unflattering shadows.

KEEPING CLEAN Use large format tiles so there’s less grout to clean, and reduce the amount of glass you use throughout the space. “The more you have, the more time you’ll spend cleaning it,” warns Betty Georghiou.

“Heated towel rails are great for not only DRYING TOWELS, but also drying DAMP CLOTHES quicker”

TAKE CONTROL Consider the

SHOWER STYLE To make up for

time you’ve skipped at the salon, create a spa-like space with a steam shower (some now include aromatherapy and music that will entice even the busiest for a moment). Mr Steam steam showers start from $3000 from Geyser.

VANITY FLAIR Keep the layout practical and streamlined. Chances are you don’t have time to run a bath, so leave it out and use the space with a larger vanity and storage instead.

CLEAR THE FOG Don’t waste time waiting for foggy mirrors to clear when you’ve got a deadline to meet. The Kado Aspect Round LED Mirror 600mm, $598, from Reece has a defogger functionality and a light perimeter with a touch sensor control.

type of shower jets you enjoy and find the head that suits you best. The Grohe Power & Soul Cosmo 190mm overhead shower and arm in Chrome, $520, from Reece offers four different settings to keep everyone happy.

KEEPING CLEAN A shower that has both a hand-held and overhead option not only gives you more shower-time choices, but also helps out when it comes to cleaning.

COMEDIAN DAVID SMIEDT TAKES AN IRREVERENT, BUT APPRECIATIVE, LOOK AT THE CLASSIC THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU-BEAUT AUSSIE LIFE ILLUSTRATION MATT COSGROVE

IT’S! AMAZING! HOW! Shouting! Can! Capture! Your! Attention! This was the entire rationale behind late-night TV merchandising. It was literally the price we paid for free-to-air entertainment before the life-changing advent of subscription services. For the generation that is more ‘Netflix and chill’ than ‘George Foreman grill’, these products broke down into two main categories – food prep and exercise. And both relied heavily on the phrases ‘IN JUST MINUTES!’ and ‘FOUR EASY PAYMENTS!’ The current generation of single-origin, artisan-only-thanks Australian consumers are mistaken if they believe they’re our first foodies. Long before MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules whipped us into a frenzy of granitas and pork belly three ways, it was the dinner party that held sway, and reality TV had nothing on how competitive these soirées got. This is where the gadgets shone brightest – right after you wiped away the dust accrued since the last dinner party. Nothing, apparently, screamed stylish sophistication more than vegetables that had been Spiralized™. Think curled and ribboned zucchini strands that looked like pasta, but without that delicious carb hit. Heaven forbid vegies should resemble their innate format when paired with beef Wellington or garnishing devils-on-horseback. Today, we crave and celebrate produce that’s as close to its natural, gloriously imperfect shape as possible. But it wasn’t always this way. Like fashion photographers on an editorial shoot, we wanted angles – harsh, square, 90-degree angles. Manufacturers melded steel and plastic in response to our symmetrical pleas. They then sealed the deal by catering for a thirst for multifunctionality we never knew we had. Seemingly overnight our cupboards became stacked with perilously sharp blades that minced, diced, sliced and – if you were up for a little Gallic pretension – julienned. We started to use the word bâtonets when we meant chips. And from 1973 onwards we apparently threw up our hands in horror at the prospect of rinsing leafy greens. Salads were to be spun in a plastic tub with a nylon string that you yanked as if trying to start a recalcitrant lawnmower.

SEPTEMBER 2018

On corers clamped to a countertop and operated by a crank, we violated fruit like barbarians, as the perfectly delicious coverings of so many Granny Smiths fell to the floor in crêpe-paperish streamers. Some were so powerful they could eviscerate the innards of an entire pineapple in seconds. What to do with a hollowed out Aus Jubilee, you may ask? Fill it with canned fruit of course. Duh. Then, there was the legendary citron press, which sounds a bit like a wrestling move but actually required way more strength. The handheld versions demanded serious tonnage in your grip to elicit just a few millilitres of nectar. They also resembled an unholy but holy union between a tea strainer and convex pressure plate. Some of us even opted for the sculptural chrome variety, which was bolted to the kitchen bench. Just like the one you once saw in a café in Nice, where it was actually used more than five times a year.

PRODUCE THAT’S AS TODAY, WE CLOSE TO ITS NATURAL, GLORIOUSLY SHAPE; BUT IT WASN’T ALWAYS THIS WAY

imperfect

It wasn’t only fruit and veg that we slashed and burned, there were also carnivorous doodads aplenty. Encased in perspex bubbles and sometimes sounding like Harrier jets taking off, they roasted, toasted and grilled any flesh they came across. The more jobs they did the better, and who cared if none were executed particularly well? Some of these culinary curiosities have evolved, and now reappear every few years with slicker packaging and increasingly Botoxed spokesfolk. Others accumulated rust in attics and garages until they were either binned or donated to the next owner, whose enthusiasm would wear off quicker than you can say ‘dehydrated beetroot chips’, or sold for a gold coin at a garage sale. Sorry. JUST A DOLLAR! BUY NOW! VERY LIMITED STOCK.
