Hello THIS MONTH I’M... ADMIRING the range of specialty florist vases that expat Kiwi Prue Glazebrook designs for her brand Urban Eden.

W
hen the photos started coming in from this issue’s shoots and the stories began to take shape, I was hit with a pretty good feeling. All the pics of pools, decks and outdoor rooms could only mean one thing – warmer weather is on its way. It’s not just the prospect of sunny days and balmy nights that appeals so much, but the loosening up of social occasions and family interactions. Friends pop round and stay for dinner, the kids stay up later playing in the garden and no one worries about wearing shoes. Life feels less hurried, more spontaneous and way more fun. Bring it on. Another feel-good moment came this month when I got to phone the very deserving winners of the Colorsteel Renovation of the Year awards and tell them they’d won $10,000. They were so excited! So who took out the top prize? Turn to page 100 to find out.

WOMEN WE LOVE
Dream team Mum-and-daughter duo Sandy Cubitt and Courtney Henderson run Moi on George and Moi St Clair, two Dunedin lifestyle stores with a carefully curated point of view
Interview by Sally Conor. Photography by Isabella Harrex.
22 | yhg
S
What brought you to retail and design? Sandy: I always loved home decor, fabrics and textures from a young age. We built a house in the 1980s when we had small children and I did all the interiors – I was only 23. Many years later I studied interior design and decided to make a career of it. After 15 years working in the industry, I opened my own store. What are the origins of the Moi stores? My first grandson had the nickname ‘Moi Moi’ when he was really little and ‘mooi’ also means ‘beautiful things’ in Dutch, so it just fitted. I wanted to create a space where my interior design clients could see linens, furniture and accessories all grouped together. How did you come to be working together? I opened a Christmas pop-up store on George Street in 2013 and the response was immediately positive. Courtney was living in London at the time and was looking for a reason to come home. She committed to running the new store in 2014 and has never left. What’s it like being in business with family? Courtney runs the George Street store (pictured) her own way; she has more international labels, loves looking for new brands and is extremely capable. It is great having her more youthful perspective. I stick to interior design and ordering for our St Clair store. How would you describe your product mix? We range from beautiful children’s brands such as Jamie Kay to women’s handbags and jewellery to homeware and gifts. A big focus for us is linen, with brands such as Kip & Co, Citta and In Bed.
yhg | 23
DESIGNER GENES Sandy’s talent for creating beautiful interiors has clearly been passed down to Courtney, but mum and daughter also have unique design sensibilities that they channel into the two separate Moi stores.
How has that mix evolved since you opened? When we first opened, bright orange lockers and coloured stainless steel were trending – it’s hard to believe that was only five years ago! Now we are into neutrals and minimalism. The store is always changing. We are always looking for ways to better ourselves and what we stock. What’s the hardest thing about running a small business? And what are the best things? Running your own store is great fun, but the hardest thing is definitely switching off from work mode and into relaxation mode. The best thing for me is coming into a client’s home after we have transformed it, and seeing how happy they are in their new space. We also do window treatments and a full design

service so we can change any space into something wonderful on all budgets. What do you love about living in Dunedin? The lifestyle in Dunedin is great. We have the beaches, beautiful walking tracks and wildlife, and then on the other hand we have amazing shopping and so many good eateries. What are your top tips for Christmas gifting? Beautiful wooden chopping boards and handmade ceramics to make platters are key this year. Everyone loves entertaining over Christmas. moiongeorge.nz @moi_on_george / @moi_saintclair

Farmers’ Merchandise Manager Andrea Hume says that a warm colour palette with tones of yellow is right on trend. “Gorgeous colour waves from rich gold through to gingery hues make a real statement. Don’t be afraid to mix different tones together and then contrast with a cooling dusky blue rug as an accent, or luxuriant greenery to emphasise the welcoming feeling.”

he accountant in Kerry Milne loves things to be orderly, symmetrical and black and white – traits reflected in the house she shares with husband Nathan and their sons, Carter and Caleb. The Cambridge abode is a perfect ‘H’ and decorated mainly in black and white, with warm accents scattered throughout. Those accents, along with the sun and light that floods the home and outdoor area, could be said to reflect the welcoming entertainer in Kerry Milne too. But this colour scheme actually evolved from a suggestion from son Caleb. Two years ago, when he was just 4, he proposed that a black feature wall might be cool in his room. His parents obliged and then replicated the look in his big brother’s bedroom as well as in the walk-through office space that links the adults’ lounge to the master bedroom. It was while contemplating her son’s colour suggestion that Kerry also found pictures of black ceilings on Pinterest. She took the plunge with a ceiling of Dulux Black in the open-plan living area. “We thought if we didn’t like it, we could paint over it easily enough,” she says. “But it works well with the white kitchen, timber floors and black joinery and there are so many windows letting light in. “We feel it adds a cool, moody, sophisticated vibe… A round of cosmopolitans and the black ceiling work well together when we’re entertaining,” this cocktail aficionado adds.

KITCHEN An all-white kitchen by Kitchen FX is complemented by bar stools from Citta and a splashback tiled in matte white honeycomb mosaics from Tile Space. LIVING, DINING (Opposite) A sleek dining table from The Design Store is paired with chairs from Forma. The wooden floors are Euro oak timber veneer in New Mist from Creative Flooring. At the other end of the entertaining zone is the lounge, with a suite from Freedom and cushions from Citta.
THE BRIEF When they opted to build, Kerry and Nathan engaged LAD Architecture in Cambridge – a decision which they both agree was a great investment. Their brief to the team at LAD was for a sleek, clean-lined, contemporary and architectural home that would sit harmoniously on their 1865-square-metre site. They wanted an ‘H’ shape to suit their desire for symmetry and specified that the home be practical, simple and family-orientated. They suggested splitting it into three zones: one for the boys, a second for entertaining, and a third just for themselves. “We wanted to future-proof it,” explains Nathan. “It will be nice for the boys not to have us walking past their rooms all the time when they are older; they’ll have a sense of privacy.”
The Milnes, who co-own an ITM building materials supplier – had done their homework. Plenty of house plans pass over their desks at work and they’d visited many a show home. In addition, this was the couple’s second newbuild home, and they’d helped Nathan’s dad build a family bach in Matarangi. In short, ideas had coalesced along the way and the design process was a true collaboration with the experts at LAD Architecture. The resulting home, which the Milnes moved into in September 2017, is clad in black, random-width, vertical cedar weatherboards in some areas and plaster in others, with parapets to hide the pitch of the roof. It offers 340 square metres of living space – a palace compared to their 90-square-metre first home.

THE DESIGN The real hero of this house is its expansive windows and glass doors. “We did not hold back on all the glass and have no regrets – apart from when we paid the joinery bill,” Kerry laughs. “We have pool views, wetland views, hill views including some of Mt Pirongia, and amazing sunset views.” The home is centred around a generously sized aquamarine swimming pool and the Milnes aimed to maximise views of it from as many rooms as possible. The result is a luxurious resort feel, particularly in rooms such as the master bedroom, which opens directly onto the pool area. About 12 metres of stacking glass doors are all that separates the main living zone from the outdoor entertainment area, and these can be completely pulled back to allow seamless flow between the two spaces. A short passageway between the main living area and the boys’ bedroom wing has walls of glass on either side, creating a glorious atrium effect as if you’re standing in an indoor garden with lush subtropical planting and the pool on one side and a spa pool on the other. The guest room at the far end of the boys’ wing boasts two ranch sliders, one leading to the spa and the other to a deck that steps onto the backyard. In addition, the rumpus room has three walls of glass doors that provide access to extensive interconnected deck spaces.
50 | yhg
H
OUTDOOR LIVING The main deck, looking straight out to the pool, is perfect for entertaining with a roomy lounge suite from Target, dining table and chairs from Freedom and a fireplace from Warmfloors Gas & Heat Centre. A motorised louvred ceiling from NZ Louvres provides shelter while also letting in light. The pool was installed by ProPools.
THE FUTURE
THE EXTRAS
The clever thing about this home is the way it offers both connection and privacy. The ‘H’ shape allows separation between lounge spaces and bedrooms for grown-ups and children alike, while the interconnecting part in the middle forms an open-plan kitchen and living area, which naturally draws the family together, along with extended family and friends. From the grown-ups’ lounge, there’s an easy sight line across to the pool, main living area and rumpus room for maximum safety while the boys are still young. Kerry and Nathan agree that there’s definitely another new-build in them – but it’s a long way off. In the meantime, this impressive house will be home for many more years to come.
+ The central heating and air conditioning are split into two zones: one for the children’s wing, which sits at a higher level, and one for the remainder of the house. + All the glass is tinted for privacy. + The carpet underlay is 11mm thick, creating a plush, soft feel underfoot. + The four-metre-long kitchen island benchtop is made of Corian so there are no visible joins. + A double cupboard under the kitchen island hides a beer and wine fridge, plus glasses, as well as blankets for cool evenings. + A motorised louvred roof covers the outdoor area and closes automatically if it rains. + A built-in Bose sound system makes entertaining even better in the main living area. •

+ Take photos of your space on your phone. When you’re in stores shopping for decor, you can use the pictures to help you put your interior vision together. Works a treat! + Stick to a theme for your interior design and that will ensure a cohesive look throughout the house – ours is ‘urban modern’. Add colour, pattern, texture and warmth through art, cushions and throws and decor items like baskets, vases and plants to provide a soft, comfortable look. + Finish your space with plants. These days you can get some great faux plants that look so real. I mix it up with faux and real plants; they make a room feel complete. + Don’t be afraid to go wild with colour in children’s rooms. Add pops of colour through art, toys, duvets, cushions and throws. Listen to what they like.
NATHAN’S NEW-BUILD TIPS
6
+ Stick to your plan. Don’t change things halfway through, which is what we often see at work. It usually equates to disruption and a massive cost. + Hold off on a landscaping plan until the house is nearly complete. We were going to have a built-in barbecue but, once we’d moved in, we realised how much we enjoyed the atrium garden view, which a barbecue would have blocked. + Add an extra 10 percent to your budget if you are building a contemporary, architectural house to cover any unexpected costs.

MEET + GREET Sarah Kee, 42 (university student; also helps with her friend’s fashion label, Mahsa), Bruno, 14, and Elvis, 11.
KITCHEN The benchtop is a hardwearing limestone slab in tundra grey (from The Tile People), which was also used to tile the bathroom. The oversized copper double sinks are from Mexico, and the Samuel Heath tap was imported from London by Robertson Bathware.
yhg | 55
W
alking around Sarah Kee’s home in Point Chevalier, Auckland, it’s clear she has exquisite taste. In most of the rooms you’ll find artworks, sculptures and artisanal furniture, each with a story to tell. But open the door to a son’s room or another lounge and you’ll see an installation of another sort: stacks of mattresses. “The boys always have a friend or two over for the night,” Sarah says with a smile. “That’s what I most wanted for this house, for it to be welcoming – a big, family-friendly home so when the boys were old enough they would feel comfortable coming home and hanging out with their mates. I’m from a family of seven and ours was always the open home in our neighbourhood so I wanted that for my kids.”
THE BACK STORY The house started life as a 1950s bach and was then turned into a two-level plaster home in the late 1980s. Sarah and Matt Noonan had been about to embark on a renovation of their previous house when they stumbled across this one. Unable to say no to the large corner site and water views, they bought it in 2008. “The ever-changing view of the harbour and the west coast, the greenery, the serenity, the community of Point Chev – we just loved everything about the place,” Sarah says. But with two young kids and Matt running his production company, Curious Film, life was busy. Renovations got put on the back burner for eight years, leaving plenty of time to dream.
56 | yhg
H
DINING The dining table was made from one giant slice of macrocarpa and had to be dried for six months before crafter Grant Bailey could work with it. LIVING (Above left and opposite) Pieces of art and definitely not for sitting on, the PostMundus Chairs in the corner came from the Nilufar Gallery in Italy. The stunning Soriana sofa by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina was a Mid Century Swag find. The bowl on the stereo is by Len Castle and was a gift from Sarah’s mother.
THE KITCHEN As an entertainer and the mum of two growing boys, a big kitchen was Sarah’s dream. During the renovation, space was stolen from the family room to put in a scullery, which was fitted out in oak to go with the oak floorboards. Oak was also used for a feature wall and shelving in a corner of the kitchen to display some of Sarah’s pottery collection. Sarah chose to use two colours for the custom-made oak kitchen cabinets: a grey on one side and a forest green on the other. “I thought the grey was a nice link to the view outside without distracting from it, but I loved the statement of the green on the other side,” she explains.
Not a fan of “shiny” things, Sarah bought the only cabinet handles she liked… but then had to find someone who could give them a tarnished finish, for a worn-in look. (She ended up doing the same for the showerhead in the family bathroom.) Robertson Bathware imported the Samuel Heath kitchen tap from London on her behalf – “I chose it because it suits the plain English kitchen vibe I’ve coveted for so many years,” she says. “We just love having a big open kitchen. We get up every Saturday morning and make pancakes together. When I’m cooking I’ll open the massive sliding windows and the boys will sit on the stools outside and talk to me. It’s really special.”
yhg | 57
MASTER BEDROOM The pink carpet in the master bedroom was custom made. “I requested a dusky pink and we went through so many pinks to get to that. I really like pink – the softness of it.” BATHROOM The bathroom was cleverly designed: “There’s a bench and then the glass so I can walk in when the boys are showering without invading their space,” says Sarah.
58 | yhg
THE RENOVATION The brief was simple: “We just wanted a really nice family home that was soulful, grounded and had lots of timber, texture and interest,” Sarah says. Inspired by the book Beach Houses: Andrew Geller by Alastair Gordon – “I liked the Italian villa style with plastered walls, stone and terracotta, Matt was more into the timber beach houses, so we ended up with a bit of both” – they began renovating in 2016. This was to be their second project, having previously converted a Grey Lynn church into a stylish home. First, they did a bit of structural work, including changing the roofline on the corner of their family room to give it a slant. They then added glass doors that slide back completely to open up the entire corner of the
family room to the outdoors. This change allows unfettered views of the sun as it sets in the west, which had previously been blocked out by the original house shape. “It was a big challenge redesigning this area – it cost so much but it would have been crazy not to have done it,” Sarah says. “Now, without that solid wall jutting out, you can sit at the other end of the house and see the sun set behind the mountains in the west, through the pohutukawa. It makes the space big and open and vast and gives us that connection with the Waitemata Harbour. It was so worth it.” In a nod to the coastal style they loved, the couple used shiplap cedar vertically for the cladding on most of the house. Its soft grey colour was designed to fit in with – rather than stand out from – the native trees outside.
H
“In this house there’s a bit of a mix of Japanese, Shaker, arts and crafts, Italian, British and mid-century American”
yhg | 59
EXTERIOR The patio is still in its original state. “We wanted to keep the tiles because they’re local terracotta and they capture and hold the warmth. They’re quite special to us,” Sarah says.
60 | yhg
H
OPEN AIR An open-plan living area allows Sarah and the kids (and whomever is their guest that day) to stay connected no matter what they’re doing. “I love this room in winter because of the open fire. We’ll hang out by the fire – I’ll have my glass of red, the boys have their marshmallows – and look out over the calm water… It’s like being on holiday every day,” says Sarah.
SARAH’S STYLE Sarah has read every issue of World of Interiors for the past 10 years and has clearly soaked up plenty of global inspiration, which has guided many of her decor choices. “I’d get so many ideas from there and try to recreate them here, which is why there’s a mishmash of styles… a bit of a mix of Japanese, Shaker, arts and crafts, Italian, British and mid-century American.” The eclectic style works, perhaps because Sarah is so intentional about her purchases. The old adage ‘Only buy what is beautiful or practical’ springs to mind in this home. “There’s a variety of rugs in this house: some I’ve brought home from the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco, and others brought back from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and India by my
mother-in-law who works in human rights around the world. It really helped me build the style from the ground up, I guess.” Despite the gorgeous rugs and beautiful art pieces, this is a house to be lived in. “We’ve put on a few good ladies’ parties – we had an especially good Mother’s Day celebration where we all drank Champagne – but we also have birthdays for little children, or pizza-andbubbles nights with the lovely Point Chev mums. I just love to have people over.” When she has the time, Sarah enjoys sitting on the patio and taking in the view, watching members of the local sailing club do their thing or local kids taking their Water Safety courses. “I feel so lucky to live here,” she says. “We’d love to be here for ever.” •

+ What did you learn from this renovation? Sarah: Go for it and have fun! Go with everything you love, and trust yourself. Even if you end up with a mishmash of styles, it’s your home so it should represent you. + Any regrets? I wish I had included the landscaping in the budget. + Any splurges? The hardware for the entire house was a splurge but, in my eyes, there was no other decent hardware option. And the timber flooring – but because it’s such a big house, it was going to be a big cost no matter what. We wanted quality and beautiful timber was a must to show off my rugs. + What’s on your shopping wish list? More stuff from Jodi at Mid Century Swag. And I’d love to have some custom-made timber shelving by Grant Bailey for the family room. + What’s one thing you would change if you could? I’d finish off the downstairs meditation room. It’s a pretty special space, even though it’s tiny – all you can see are the three timber windows, which show beautiful scenes from outside, with the greens of the trees and the blue of the sea. One day it’ll be the room I want it to be.

MEET + GREET Michelle Wilson, 46 (part-time accounts manager), and Brent Smith, 48 (sales manager), plus Monty the cavoodle.
I
f walls could talk, Michelle Wilson’s home would be able to tell tales of her family stretching back nearly 80 years. The Christchurch house she shares with partner Brent Smith was built for her grandparents in the 1940s; it’s the home her mother grew up in and the setting of many of Michelle’s treasured childhood memories. “My whole childhood involved my grandparents being in this house,” she remembers. “We would come up from Wanaka and stay. When I was older and moved to Christchurch, I would come around and have lunch. We had Christmas celebrations here, too… so many lovely memories.” When Michelle’s grandparents no longer lived there, the house was retained by the family and rented out for a short time before Michelle and Brent decided to purchase it. “While it was rented out, we talked with the family about buying it,” Michelle says. “Grandma moved out in her nineties, and Grandad had already passed away.”
66 | yhg
H
KITCHEN, LIVING Michelle’s love of black and white extends throughout most of her home – as does her love of a bargain find. The sofa and dining chairs from Freedom are teamed with a secondhand table and shelving unit simply painted white. The black lamp and round mirror are from Kmart and the black butterfly chair is from Container Door. The entertainment unit was custom-made by the couple’s kitchen joiner. LOUNGE (Opposite, inset) The front living room is painted in Dulux Franz Josef; the white locker is from IKEA.
Michelle was excited to become the new custodian of the home. She and Brent were keen to keep the soul of the house intact while updating it for modern life. The interior was dated with very little done to improve it over the years other than the removal of a wall and the addition of a new kitchen.
GROUND WORK Michelle and Brent decided the smartest thing to do was to live in the house for a few years before setting any extension plans in stone. “In those first years we simply did up what we had,” says Michelle. “We painted inside and out, replaced boards full of borer, put in a new bathroom, ripped up the carpet (which was even in the kitchen), sanded floors, painted the kitchen cupboards and added fresh curtains.” In her grandparents’ time, the backyard had been dedicated to growing food. Veges still have a place today but there’s far more greenery of the non-edible kind. A digger was called in to flatten the section and the chicken coop had to go.
“We planted things we liked, such as white roses out the front,” says Michelle. “Once we’d put in the front fence we planted mop tops along it and laurels down the driveway. Raised hedging out the back was a project we tackled pretty much within the first year,” Michelle says. Four years on, the pair were ready at last to make the big changes they’d been planning.
THE EXTENSION The house had two bedrooms, a bathroom, a separate living room and a kitchen with a small dining area – standard for its era but no longer a good fit for modern living. “We knew we were going to build out, as we wanted a living and dining area at the back – then we decided to go up, too,” Michelle says. Builder Craig Primmer of CP Construction was hired to knock down the back of the house and create an open-plan living area, and stairway up to a master suite. The laundry, back porch and toilet were demolished and a new laundry tucked under the stairs.

BEDROOMS, OFFICE (Above) Grey bedlinen from Nest and a cushion from Penney + Bennett are paired with more of Michelle’s handiwork: she removed the top of this side table from The Warehouse and replaced it with a floor tile. Similarly, the black and white artwork in the study is a Michelle Wilson original. White locker from Kmart. ‘Oui’ cushion from Citta. Black anglepoise lamp from Lighting Direct. BATHROOM Vanity from Plumbing World. Wall painted in Resene Blackjack.
The new kitchen remains in its original space but now opens into the extension where stacker doors and wide timber steps lead down to a concreted patio and the pretty back garden. “Before, the only lounge was at the front so accessing the backyard wasn’t easy. Now we open the doors in summer and everything flows nicely – it’s a great entertaining area.” The front lounge is still loved; a quiet place with a log burner and no TV. The original fire surround has been retained, its multicoloured tiles swapped for plain white paint. And while you lose some, you win some; a casualty of the renovation has been the old carport, while the new balcony off the master bedroom now offers views of the Port Hills. Michelle thinks her grandparents would approve.
THE PALETTE Michelle’s friends jokingly encouraged her to introduce red into the house, knowing her dedication to white, grey and black. Needless to say, it didn’t happen. There was very little, if any, discussion about colour.
68 | yhg
“I love fresh white,” says Michelle. “If Brent had said he wanted blue and red, for example, I would have bought him a cushion,” she laughs. The bathroom and kitchen cabinetry is white, the carpet charcoal, the bathroom floors a stormy grey. The furniture is primarily black or grey, while details – such as mirrors and a super-sized Stendig calendar – contribute further black accents. Although Michelle painted the joinery white, she loves black door frames and so made the call to have black stacker doors on the addition, a decision she’s very pleased with.
THE END Michelle and Brent love their home but admit it sometimes feels a little big for the two of them. However, they have no intention of moving on at this stage as they have a sneaking feeling this house still has some tales to tell – even if they’re simply of more happy summer days to come. • Discover more interiors in fresh white and black on

MEET + GREET Mille Holm Rasmussen, 28 (works in events and marketing), Morten, 28 (student), and their daughter, 1.
Field of dreams A sunny spot next to a cornfield was exactly the rural setting this young couple were looking for. Then all they had to do was build a house‌ Text by Rikke Graff Juel. Photography by Christina Kayser Onsgaard/Living Inside.

LIVING This corner sofa was chosen for its simple form so it doesn’t take up too much space or detract from the view of the neighbouring cornfields. The two old suitcases that act as a coffee table (with built-in storage) were found secondhand, as was the vintage rocking chair.

W
hen Mille Holm Rasmussen and her partner Morten were looking for a weekend retreat, their initial thoughts turned to something that floated. Morten had been dreaming about a boat ever since their apartment in central Copenhagen had started to feel a bit too small, but in the end Mille thought a rural home would be more practical, especially if they started a family in the next few years. She convinced Morten to cycle out to Hvidovre, a leafy area in the city’s southwest, to look at a communal-garden development where they might be able to buy a small house adjoining some farmland. “We took a look around and talked to some people, but there were no properties available at the time,” says Mille. However, the determined couple didn’t let that deter them; they simply went home and created 50 flyers to drop into mailboxes in the area. Within a week, a resident called to say she had a house they could buy. As soon as they could, the couple returned to Hvidovre to see the house, but came away a little disappointed. However, they liked its sunny aspect and picturesque view of the neighbouring cornfields. Four days later, the property was theirs.

KITCHEN A white kitset kitchen blends into the home’s neutral background, allowing the real centrepiece – an upcycled dining table – to take centre stage. The table was built using timber salvaged from the old house and the chairs are vintage. The display cupboard (opposite) was also built using reclaimed materials.

Despite neither of them having any construction or DIY experience, Mille and Morten threw themselves into designing a new home and ripping down the old one. “We rented a car and trailer and worked hard from morning to evening,” says Mille. “On day five, we drove the old house to the recycling centre!” A few weeks later, the skeleton of their new house arrived in two pieces and was assembled on site. As well as fitting out their home in a simple palette of wood and white, the couple built an outdoor kitchen on their terrace by constructing a wooden bench with a homemade concrete top. They also added a glass-roofed annexe to the outside of their home, which serves as a sunroom, outdoor dining room and guest accommodation. “It’s the best room in the house,” says Mille. “It’s fantastic to lie down and look up at the starry sky, and to be woken up the next morning by the sun’s rays.” Now their home is complete, Mille and Morten – and their newly arrived little daughter – live here throughout the summer as well as on weekends and public holidays. The Hvidovre community has a mixture of older and younger families and there’s an active social scene including a local flea market and juice press. “We look at it as a huge plus,” Mille says. “We can always choose to participate in what we have the time and interest for.” •

+ Be inspired by the environment. Take cues for your home’s colour palette from the surrounding landscape. If you have a really spectacular view, keep your interiors clean and simple to avoid detracting from it. Sleek window treatments will also help maximise the outlook. + Shop vintage and look for items with character. Seek out the items you need at op-shops, estate sales, demolition yards and on Trade Me, as you’ll end up with beautiful, timeless treasures at a fraction of the price of new furniture. Keep an eye out for handmade furniture, mid-century ceramics and interesting coloured glass. + Create a neutral base. To avoid your home feeling like a jumble sale, offset your collection of mismatched vintage furnishings with modern white walls, handleless cabinetry and simple light fittings. This will also allow your furniture and textiles to stand out and be appreciated. + Reuse and upcycle. Before you throw anything away, from old furniture and fittings to timber and tiles, take a fresh look and ask yourself if it could be fashioned into something else or simply painted to modernise it for your new space. Holding onto pieces of the past adds warmth and soul to new interiors. + If you can’t afford it, or can’t find it – trying making it. If you’ve got the time, making your own pieces of furniture – such as the outdoor kitchen Morgen and Mille put together – is very satisfying. There are plenty of online tutorials, or ask a skilled friend to show you how. Once you’ve got the bug, DIY can be completely addictive. + Maximise outdoor living. Create multiple zones in your outdoor spaces to give you more reasons to spend time outside. Set up an outdoor food preparation and cooking space, arrange a dining area (preferably with some form of shelter) and look for inviting spots of shade or sun where a simple table and chair would look good. By doing this, you’ll greatly increase the liveable area of your home.

N AT U R A L L I G H T This elegantly designed Hamilton home wraps around a lush gully of native bush and boasts almost seamless connections to its outdoor spaces Text by Tina Stephen. Photography by Swell Productions.

A
s our families grow, most of us look to upsize and find a home to suit our lifestyles. But as their clan grew, Katie and Matt Williams went the other way – they chose to remain on their central Hamilton property and change the way they lived instead. Originally purchased before the arrival of their children, the couple’s 1920s bungalow was becoming too small, so with a plan in hand, the couple approached local architects Edwards White to devise a new build. The old bungalow was moved to another property, and preparation began on a new home for the Williams’s.
Situated on a busy road, the new house was planned around a gully of native bush at the rear of the property. The concept was to create an innercity sanctuary with perfect indoor-outdoor flow. “This is the first home we have designed and built from scratch,” says Katie. “Coming from an older home and having a limited footprint meant good use of space was key for us.” During the build, a cantilevered deck was washed away in a rainstorm, resulting in a new lawn stretching between the house and the gully. “With that change in topography, we needed to refine the design from a terraced deck and garden to a level-form grass area,” says Matt.

With a smaller, more refined deck design in place, a wall of joinery by Vantage Windows & Doors became an even more integral component, allowing sweeping views from the open-plan living space out to the emerald grass and verdant bush beyond, as well as allowing light and sunshine to come flooding in. “Making use of the northern aspect was imperative,” says Katie. “The doors have been amazing because they let so much light in. On a sunny day, we love it how the sun comes in and heats up the whole place, including the concrete floors. “But also, the house was built around that view of the bush. With the glass walls and doors, you feel like you are basically in that bush, even when you’re indoors.”

Knocking down the bach and building a permanent home in its place has resulted in the perfect mix of style and comfort for this Raumati couple Text by Sally Conor. Photography by Simon Wilson and Leroy James Photography.
MEET + GREET Bryan Gundersen, 70 (semi-retired barrister), Jan Gundersen, 67 (part-time legal secretary)
L
iving at the bach permanently is a dream for many city-dwellers, but when it comes to the crunch, how many would be courageous enough to make the move? Wellington residents Bryan and Jan Gundersen had long hoped to make Raumati Beach their full-time residence, but decided to place the final decision in the hands of Mother Nature. “We wanted to experience a winter on the Kapiti Coast before making a decision to
demolish and build, and live at Raumati Beach permanently,” says Jan. Their old holiday home was a low-cost build that wasn’t fit for purpose as a permanent residence. Once the couple decided a westcoast winter was definitely tolerable, they started to look into replacing the old house. “We decided not to renovate as all the advice we received told us it wouldn’t be worthwhile (it was a prefab build that did not have good ‘bones’) and was best to start again,” tells Jan.

THE DE S I GN
Upon visiting a David Reid Homes showhome at Ferndale in Waikanae, the couple felt an instant connection with both its look and its design. The pavilionstyle home, clad in black Linea Oblique Weatherboard and cedar, felt like the perfect fit for what they wanted to achieve. “We loved the general feel of the show home and decided that, with some changes in configuration, it would work on our site,” says Jan. “The one major innovation we made, inspired by our site and input from David Reid Homes, was a ‘see-through’ design feature that links the front of the section with the swimming pool at the rear.” Good outdoor living was important to the Gundersens, who wanted to be able to comfortably host their three children and five grandchildren. Creating a light, airy and functional house which offered plenty of connection with the outdoors was their goal. This was achieved with a dual-wing pavilion design – the dining room, lounge, kitchen and scullery, and media room are in one wing, and the master suite, study, two bedrooms, main bathroom, laundry and internal double garage are in the other. “The two wings are connected by an entrance foyer, which is of a transparent design, so as one approaches the front door and enters the house, one sees right through to the rear of the section and the swimming pool,” says Bryan. “This line of sight is complemented by a boardwalk up to the entrance foyer and out the other side.” The pavilion design allows plenty of quality time spent with family – as well as just the right amount of privacy. “The living and entertaining pavilion is separate from the functional rooms and the master bedroom is separated from the two spare bedrooms by the study, meaning that when we have guests, they are ‘downstream’ of us!” laughs Jan.
EXTERIOR A series of deck areas and boardwalks create a pleasing visual link to the home’s cedar cladding, and black Linea Oblique Weatherboard creates a stylish contrast. White HardieGroove Lining on the soffits adds attractive detail.
NEW-BUILD WORKSHEET BUDGET
FINISHES
What was the total cost of the build? Jan: Excluding demolition, site preparation and landscaping, $753,000. Are there any areas of your home you decided to save on and splurge on, respectively? We decided to save on our bedrooms by ensuring they were of modest size. After all, we thought, who lives in bedrooms? We splurged on extensive driveways, landscaping and a new tennis court as they were necessary to supplement the home. And how did your budget forecast compare to your actual spend? Our forecast for the new build was spot on as we had a fixed price, plus we had a good forecast for the provisional sums. Our budget for the demolition and renovation of the stand-alone garage and sleep-out was completely blown out. Furthermore, our forecast for the landscaping was way too low.
Linea Oblique™ Weatherboard Made to withstand our unpredictable climate, Linea Oblique™ Weatherboard is tough and beautiful, with superior durability, low maintenance and design flexibility.
HONESTY BOX Best lesson learned? Not to underestimate the importance of landscaping: planning for it well in advance, going thorough due diligence on competing contractors and getting a number of quotes. What would you never do again? Not adequately budget for landscaping, and make any assumptions about the presence or absence of asbestos in any demolition work. Did you have any building setbacks or disasters you can share? Finding out that the demolition and building contractors would not touch anything without a certificate as to the absence of asbestos, then finding out the roofs on the old home and standalone garage had coating containing asbestos. One thing you would change about your home if you could? We would extend the length of the lounge/dining pavilion area by at least another metre (maybe two). What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had in your home? The first Christmas. We had eight adults and five grandchildren aged 3 years and younger – the new home plus sleep-out coped admirably.
HardieGroove™ Lining Ideal in semi-wet areas such as bathrooms, HardieGroove™ Lining also offers outstanding impact resistance so it retains its good looks for years to come.

Jane and Bryan moved into a rental nearby in Paraparaumu while their old home was demolished and the site prepared for the David Reid Kapiti team. The build process was smooth, apart from one serious hiccup – the discovery of asbestos material in the old roof, both of the house and a separate garage, which had to be removed by specialists and caused “both some angst and expense”. However, after a nine-month build, the Gundersens found themselves moving into their brand-new home. From the outset, one of the things they loved best about it was its handsome appearance and the way it interacts with the landscape. “We love the exterior of the home, its location on the site and its see-through design,” says Jan. “These attributes in combination with each other give the home, we think, tremendous street appeal.” Upon approach to this home, the combo of cedar with alternating 300mm and 200mm Linea Oblique weatherboards create a bold contrast. The weatherboards are Dulux Blackwood Bay, the soffits are white HardieGroove Lining and the roof is Colorsteel ‘Flax Pod’. “Linea Oblique Weatherboard was used on the David Reid show home in Waikanae, which we loved,” says Jan. “We liked the horizontal panels in black as they create a sharp and attractive contrast to the cedar cladding.”

T H E L I V I NG
While the Gundersens love the exterior look of their home, they also particularly love its exterior spaces. “We have three outdoor areas. At the front we have an exposed aggregate patio accessed by large sliding glass doors; at the rear we have an expansive deck and louvred veranda accessed by large sliding glass doors; and along the bedroom side we have a boardwalk accessed from the rooms by glass sliding doors that lead to (among other things) the spa. All these areas, plus the seethrough design, give the home a look and feel that we love,” says Jan.
On the inside, a decor described as “modern and simple – almost minimalistic” leaves plenty of room for enjoying life. A neutral colour palette is warmed by natural wood, and just a few much-loved heirlooms add character. “We have a lot of affection for our antique French ormolu cabinet which has been in Jan’s family for many years,” says Bryan. The couple look forward to many more years in their home (yes, even the winters). “The only changes we’re contemplating are to further renovate the interior of the second garage and sleep-out and to upgrade the swimming pool surrounding area,” says Jan. “But we plan to stay in this home for a long time.” •

When the Leitch family embarked on their major renovation, they initially opted to save the swimming pool for a later phase. But halfway through the build they thought: why not now? They avoided two periods of upheaval and created their dream outdoor area, complete with pool and spa, and couldn’t be happier. See the whole reno over the page.

MEET + GREET Annelies Leitch, 37 (home buyer at online fashion store Onceit), Ben Leitch, 37 (general manager), Harper, 3, and Hugh, 2, plus Cash the bulldog.
W
hen Annelies and Ben Leitch first saw their one-acre property in the north Auckland suburb of Whenuapai, they didn’t see a rundown weatherboard house with tacked-on addition and out-of-date kitchen and bathroom. Instead, they saw an opportunity to create the family home and expansive outdoor area of their dreams. “It was untouched,” says Annelies. “The house was a deceased estate, the previous owner built it and lived in it for 50 years without doing anything except a small add-on at the back for his mum. We loved the land and the location, as Ben grew up in the area.” Once the house was theirs, the couple lived in it for eight months without changing anything. They wanted to experience an entire summer there before planning any renovations. By the end of summer 2015, the Leitches had a pretty good idea of what the house needed. “We wanted a big indoor-outdoor area with a fireplace and covered area that connected with the kitchen,” Annalies says. “We had something similar at our old house and spent all our time out there so we wanted the same thing here, but on a larger scale.”
PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
1
No outdoor living space. An extensive patio and pool area was built.
2 The kitchen was cramped. An extension made room for a larger, open-plan kitchen.
3
No flexible spaces. A playroom with a large sliding door can be opened up or closed off.

DESIGN & BUILD
Annelies and Ben met with architect Marshall Cook with clear ideas already in mind. He took those ideas and produced a plan for a major renovation that included pushing out the front of the house to create a new kitchen and living space, opening up the entire side of the house to a brand-new landscaped patio, creating a master bedroom wing and overhauling the interior. The couple, now with a baby on the way, moved out for six months while the renovation was underway. The process was largely stress free, but there was just one big, nasty surprise: the cost. “Everything cost more than we budgeted for,” laughs Annelies. “But we worked through any issues with Nick Leitch, Ben’s dad, who luckily was our builder for the whole project.” A swimming pool was originally planned for a later phase but, halfway through, the Leitches decided to pull out all the stops and create their dream in its entirety. “We just decided to do it all at the same time rather than having all that upheaval again later, with diggers in the backyard. My husband then decided he wanted a spa pool as well, and I said okay, as long as it was built in.” They moved back in just before New Year’s Eve 2015, and daughter Harper was born just two weeks later.
KITCHEN & PATIO The renovated kitchen now connects with an outdoor dining space furnished with a custom-made table, chairs from BBQ Factory and a rug from Intrepid Home. The kitchen pendants are from Alpha Lighting and the cowhide is from NSW Leather.

LIVING IS EASY
Now their renovation is complete, the Leitches are over the moon with the home they’ve created. By prioritising flow between indoors and out, their home feels spacious, airy and comfortable, as well as offering areas of privacy (and mess) for all four family members. “Overall, we wanted great flow in our home, but we also wanted the spaces to be multipurpose,” says Annelies. “We created a playroom and added a huge sliding door so that space can be open to the living area or closed off as a guest room. We kept the original bedrooms where they are, but painted them all in Resene Alabaster to make sure they’re versatile.” By extending the front of the house, they also made room for an internal staircase down to the under-house space, which was converted into a ground-floor study with a striking poured black concrete floor. Upstairs, oak flooring was laid on top of the original floorboards to create visual flow throughout the new and old spaces – particularly through the open-plan kitchen and living area, which forms the heart of the home.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
BEFORE
When it came to designing her brand-new kitchen, Annelies didn’t hesitate. “I had a clear vision of what materials I wanted and the look I wanted,” she says. “We used a kitchen designer who drew up a plan and sourced the materials. We wanted a white kitchen but added timber for warmth and a black splashback to add depth.” The kitchen has a gorgeous view out the front of the house, over the wide front lawn and beyond, so Annelies didn’t want to compromise that view with a low rangehood.
“We couldn’t put a normal one in because it would interrupt the view. I looked at pop-up options but they have very mixed reviews. Then I found this inset ceiling one from Ikon and it works great.” The couple stuck with their natural, neutral colour palette in the bathrooms as well, but used various tile patterns to create interest on the white walls, with herringbone in the family bathroom and hexagonal mosaics in the ensuite. “Our tiler hated it!” laughs Annelies. Cedar vanities were also made by their kitchen manufacturer, to create continuity through the home.

ALWAYS OUTSIDE
Clean, simple indoor spaces create lots of potential for growth and change over the coming years, and they also enhance this home’s connection to the outdoors by allowing natural light and views of the surrounding landscape to shine. Annelies’ favourite thing to do in her home is to be in the kitchen, with all the doors and windows thrown open, so she can see the kids playing on the large front lawn, chat to a friend seated at the kitchen island and enjoy the feeling of effortless flow between indoors and out.
“We use the outdoor area a lot, even in winter,” she says. “Because the patio is covered, our outdoor furniture can be used all year round.” Next on the agenda is to install an outdoor fireplace and barbecue area to make cooking and entertaining outdoors even more seamless. But for now, the family are planning on enjoying the amazing home they’ve created for many more years to come. “It’s the perfect set-up,” says Annelies. “I feel like we will outgrow it eventually, but while the kids are young, they can play in the bush and swim in the creek. We love where we live.” •

+ What areas of your renovation did you save on? Splurge on? Annelies: We saved on carpet in the bedrooms (through a friend who sourced and laid it) and splurged on the pool area, and bathroom tiles and fittings. + Best lessons learned? Give yourself time. Time to source alternative materials and time to plan how you would use the different spaces in the house. We were very rushed (heavily pregnant with our first child) so we didn’t spend nearly as much time as should have planning some of the spaces or sourcing cheaper/ better alternatives. + What would you never do again? Rush the build. On our next project we want to plan properly and spend time making sure the spaces are exactly how we want them, to ensure they work for the family. + What’s one thing you would change about your home if you could? I think if we could change anything, even though we absolutely love the outdoor undercover area, we would change the design slightly to ensure the area is more watertight. We always planned to put a fire and built-in barbecue in this space but we didn’t plan it in a way that everything can fit and work well together... next time! + Most memorable experience you’ve had in your home (good or bad)? Raising our two gorgeous children and seeing how much they love the space and layout of the house to run around and play in.

“I was really impressed with all the finalists but Emma and Josh’s villa was a standout. Not only was it one of the most ambitious entries we saw but it was finished to a very high standard with brilliant attention to detail. One of the highlights for me is the kitchen – it’s a gorgeous space that perfectly suits the house and their lifestyle. The thoughtful addition of heritage elements throughout also makes it a really special home that they should be very proud of.” K AT I E N E W T O N EDITOR

COLORSTEEL® has been protecting the places New Zealanders live, work and play in for over 35 years, turning metal into magic and transforming the everyday. We asked Sarah Pepworth, Head of Marketing, a few of our top questions:
F
rom the reworked floor plan to the addition of heritage features, Emma and Josh Smaller’s New Plymouth villa shows how important it is to think both big and small when renovating. While the overall vision needs to be bold and cohesive, it’s the little details that make the end result a showstopper. Here, the couple share the lessons they learned during the reno. What was one of the biggest lessons you learned during the renovation? Emma: Learning to enjoy the journey. Sometimes we got too fixated on the outcome and forgot to enjoy the process. We wanted to be in by Christmas 2018 as we were getting married in January. We moved in at the end of October 2018, well before our mental cut-off date – so in hindsight, there was no need to rush.
What are you most proud of? We’re proud to have stayed true to the original character of the home but enhanced it in a way that’s more userfriendly. We’re proud and very fortunate to have it as our place to call home. How does it feel to win the Colorsteel® Renovation of the Year competition? We’re stoked! We’ve had lovely feedback from people. We love our home, and it’s pretty special when others notice the little details and offer congratulations on a project well done.
“Emma and Josh’s project stood out from the rest of the entries thanks to their vision and skill and their commitment to honouring the home’s heritage. From top to bottom, it is a very well-executed renovation. Congratulations.” SARAH PEPWORTH HEAD OF MARKETING, C O L O R S T E E L®
How do I decide which colour my roof should be? Your roof is a major part of your exterior colour scheme, alongside your main house colour (paint or brick), trims and windows. To choose a roof colour, consider any fixed elements you won’t be changing, such as brick work and driveways, as well as the location of your home, its environment and your home’s architectural style. To help with your decision, always request a free steel sample (available from your supplier or colorsteel. co.nz) and compare it with test pots of the other colours you are considering. Lastly consider the finish. New COLORSTEEL® Matte offers a refined aesthetic, and we have been seeing a growing trend towards matte finishes on building exteriors in New Zealand. If in doubt, speak to a colour consultant or check out colorsteel.co.nz/ inspiration for some ideas. What other trends are you seeing? Along with matte finishes, we have been seeing an increase in standing seam profiles that add interesting lines to a design, especially when used as cladding as well as roofing. In the cladding space, we are also seeing eye-catching pairings of COLORSTEEL® with cedar and other timbers. In terms of colour, throughout 2019 we have continued to see a preference for darker shades such as COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod®, which is one of our fastest growing colours.
SUPER SEAMLESS Want a kitchen that blends so beautifully into your home, it feels like part of the furniture? The new generation of kitchen tech is here to make your vision a reality
YH&G + BOSCH
T
he modern Kiwi kitchen is where it all happens: parties are started, homework is puzzled over, confidences are shared, problems are solved and families connect over a hot meal. These days, the kitchen island is the hub where these connections happen, but all too often the cook has his or her back turned while they prepare the food. Up until now, it’s been highly impractical to cook in the middle of the kitchen due to a lack of accessible technology.
T HE N EW H OME HU B Those days are finally over. The new generation of cooktops use induction technology to cook food, which makes them far safer and more user-friendly for families. Ceiling island ventilation systems are a thing of the past, too, with the arrival of integrated ventilation, which draws the steam and smells of cooking food downward and away. Combined, these two advances create a cooktop that’s ready to take centre stage in your kitchen. The Bosch Serie 8 Induction cooktop with integrated ventilation is the ultimate in
sociable kitchen island cooking. Its versatile FlexInduction surface allows you to customise the way you cook according to the size of the pots and dishes you have on the go, while the PerfectAir sensor means you can concentrate on cooking while the ventilation automatically adjusts to suit. The whole unit blends beautifully into your benchtop to create a smart surface that takes the clutter out of cooking, leaving more room for the moments that matter.
THE CO OK’S CHOICE For entertainers, professional cooks or large families, Bosch FlexInduction provides one of the most convenient methods of cooking available. While standard induction cooking uses magnetism to heat iron-based pots, FlexInduction provides even more flexibility as pots can be moved effortlessly across zones with chosen temperature settings moving, too. Induction technology is ideal for kitchen island cooking as the use of magnetism rather than thermal heating means surfaces are cool to touch just seconds after the heat has been switched off.
END LE SS INT E GR ATIO N Alongside a Bosch integrated vented induction cooktop, there are other ways to further improve the seamless experience of your kitchen. A Bosch integrated dishwasher hides behind panelling that matches your kitchen cabinetry, as does an integrated fridge. And in homes where multiple ovens are required, dual Bosch ovens with matching control panels and seamless integration (including the warming drawer) add more functionality to your kitchen while blending into the background.

attan and cane furniture was everywhere in the 1960s and ’70s and it’s back in full force once again. These natural materials add warmth, texture and interest to any space, and work with many different decor styles. The key to making it look modern lies in what you choose to pair it with.
LOUNGE The great thing about rattan furniture is its natural tone goes well with many different colours. In this living room setting, a threeseater rattan sofa has been matched with off-white walls and tones of peach, lilac, yellow ochre and black. A jute rug grounds the space and adds extra texture. As the chair and sofa are very square and modern, it is important to add some softness to the space. This has been done by incorporating curvy elements such as the coffee table, urns, vessels and vases. The rattan basket-weave pendant light complements the furniture.

BEDROOM This elegant black rattan headboard makes an ideal focal point for the space. It simply hangs on the wall like a picture or mirror, which means you can position it high or low, depending on the look you’re after. To ensure it gets the attention it deserves, we suggest keeping the bedding simple – we teamed ours with moss green, white and black. Adding more woven texture, but this time in a contrasting colour, the beautiful arched wardrobe is a great option for those needing freestanding storage. The bedside table has a lovely rattan drawer detail and matches the proportions of the headboard and other furniture in the room. 1 Cavala hurricane lamps, $25.95-$109.95, from Freedom. 2 Clementine rocker, $665, from Tea Pea. 3 Tilly@home throw, $149.99, from Farmers.

CANE CARE To ensure your cane or rattan piece lasts for years, keep these tips in mind. + Don’t place your rattan furniture in direct sunlight as the fibres will dry out and fade over time. If exposure to sunlight is unavoidable, turn the piece periodically so the sun doesn’t just affect one area. + Dust your rattan furniture often to avoid grime build-up. If cleaning is required, use soapy water and a toothbrush, and always use a towel to dry it off. + If your favourite rattan or cane item needs some TLC, there are cane experts around the country who can repair or replace rattan panels. Try Cane Factory, Wrightway Studios, Dovetail Restorations or Kelmscott Cane Repairs, among others. + To spray-paint cane furniture, clean the piece thoroughly, then use a paint primer to even out bumps and help the basecoat stick. Several light coats of spray paint will create an even finish. Make sure each coat dries before applying the next one. •

Trading their rain-soaked tent for an old-school caravan has been the ticket to holiday happiness and magical memories for this Mt Maunganui clan Text by Monique Balvert O’Connor. Photography by Claire Mossong.
112 | yhg
M MEET + GREET Who holidays here? Ants Reweti, 33 (builder), Nicola Reweti, 33 (stay-at-home mum), Arlie, 7, Jai, 5, and Mika, 2.
Background Where do you live and when did you buy your caravan? Nicola: In Mt Maunganui. We bought it last October. How did you end up being caravan owners? Ants: On Waitangi Weekend last year, we got flooded out of our tent at Sandspit Bay and had to evacuate at 10pm. We packed the ute and trailer in ankle-deep water and headed off for the six-hour drive home with everything soaking. That’s when we decided “no more tenting”. We borrowed a friend’s caravan to give it a taste and were hooked. It was so easy being able to throw our stuff in it and most things are in there already. Tell us about the buying process. Nicola: We got a bit overwhelmed on Trade Me, so we asked Ants’ uncle, who has done up a few caravans. It turned out he had a 1979 Oxford to sell to us with a mint-condition exterior and chassis. We were very lucky. But the interior was dated and had some bush-hack renovations. It had colourful curtains, wood veneer panelling and blue lino, all a bit mismatched. We named it ‘Clyde’.
KEEP ON ROLLING The Reweti family were easily converted to the delights of caravanning and love to head off to out-of-the-way places. Their 1979 homeon-wheels, christened ‘Clyde’, cost $11,000 to buy and renovate.
The reno Where did you start? The planning was a huge stage. We marked things up on the floor with masking tape to get an idea of scale. We had a book of plans and looked at folding tables, fold-up beds and even the option of hanging the baby’s cot from the roof.
yhg | 113
How much did you tackle yourselves? All the ply detailing and cabinetry, painting, bed frames and flooring were done by Ants. I made the curtains, blinds and quilt cover, and upholstered the vertical sections in the seating area – the other part was left to the professionals.
B E FO RE
Talk us through the renovation. Ants: We created a curtained-off area with a double bed behind it and storage beneath. The original set-up didn’t have a permanent bed, but Nicola was keen to have a daybed and Mika’s porta-cot goes on top. The other end of the caravan is now the seating area (we switched that around), which converts into beds for the eldest two kids. I built a frame for this new squab area which also contains storage space. I put the table on a pole so it’s removable at bedtime. We installed new cabinetry everywhere, except above the kitchen bench. The previous bench had a sink but we decided we didn’t need one.
The interior What was the inspiration for Clyde’s interior? Nicola: A natural look with some retro touches. We didn’t want anything too clinical and it had to be sturdy enough to handle bumps. Things like the pillows, wooden bowls, towels and mugs all came from op-shops. I wanted things that wouldn’t break, aren’t plastic and would add to the theme. I love how our exposed-filament bulb lights and gold wall brackets go with the wood, olive green and cream fabric and the natural look of the caravan.
114 | yhg
M What considerations are unique to a caravan reno? + The weight and placement of things is crucial so the caravan doesn’t fishtail when it’s towed. We did things to keep the weight down, such as not making the benchtop too thick. + So much is curved in a caravan, so we cut templates out of cardboard for the cabinetry and curved seating area.
+ In this confined space every inch counts and if there’s the option to create storage, do it. It’s amazing what fits under our bed! + Everything has to be secured as you don’t want cupboard doors and drawers flying open when you’re travelling. We used strong magnets on these, and a bolt on the fridge door.
yhg | 115
FACT FILE Ply from PlaceMakers, polyurethaned by Ants. Cane chair, crockery, cushions, dish on wall and glass vase from op-shops. Bulb lights from Mitre 10 Mega. Curtain fabric from Spotlight, curtains made by Nicola. Woven mirror from Trade Me. Pierced gold metal candleholder from Kmart.
The details Best moment during the process? Putting the floor down was cool as it was quite easy to do and made such a difference. The caravan went from looking old and ugly to nice, and that’s when we saw the potential of the whole renovation. The same day we masking-taped the size of the bed, so it was an exciting day. Worst moment? Ants: Our first trip with Clyde! We travelled up a windy, rough coastal road. I’d never towed a trailer before – turns out there’s quite a skill to it. I was worried I would clip the car or go over the cliff into the ocean. What do you enjoy most about caravan life? It offers quality family time, is so much easier
116 | yhg
than tenting, and we don’t have to worry about the weather so much. It’s a relaxing way to get away and we pick places that aren’t so busy. What was your total spend? The caravan cost $6000. We budgeted on $4000 for the renovation but it was closer to $5000, mainly because we discovered the need for new tyres. So the total spend was just under $11,000. What did you save/splurge on? Nicola: The leather handles on the cabinetry and divider curtain were a save as I bought strips of leather and stained them with soy sauce. We splurged on the squabs, which cost $1200 plus fabric. • Follow Clyde’s travels @clyde.the.caravan

Prep your deck Your deck is a unique haven, the one space in your home that doesn’t need pruning, weeding, dusting or vacuuming. Get your deck ready for the summer entertaining season by using Cabot’s products to create a low-maintenance stained timber finish you’ll love
I
f you want to change the colour of your deck while keeping the natural features of the wood visible, you’ll need a timber decking oil. Before you start oiling your deck, it’s important to prepare the surface so you can get good results. In dry weather, this is a job you can get done in a single day.
YO U ’ L L N E E D + Cabot’s New Timber Prep + Cabot’s Deck Clean + Cabot’s Deck Prep scrubbing brush + Cabot’s Deck Hand bucket + Cabot’s Deck Coat lambswool applicator + A paint brush + Cabot’s Aquadeck Decking Oil
STEP ONE W E AT H E R YO U R D E C K If your deck is brand-new, you’ll need to leave it exposed to the elements for 4 - 6 weeks to let the tannins leach away. However, if you want to skip the weathering process, use Cabot’s New Timber Prep. Always follow Cabot’s New Timber Prep with Cabot’s Deck Clean. You can also use these products if you’re recoating timber that has previously been coated. Once your deck is ready to be treated, you’ll need to prepare it for oiling.
STEP TWO P R E PA R E YO U R D E C K Dilute the Cabot’s Deck Clean with water, then use your brush to scrub it into the timber. Be careful not to splash any people, pets, plants or painted surfaces with Deck Clean. Leave the solution on the timber for 20 minutes, then wash it off with water. When it’s dry, your timber is ready to coat.
STEP THREE OIL YOUR DECK Give your Cabot’s Aquadeck a good stir before you start. Then start by carefully cutting in the edges of your deck with a brush, before using your Cabot’s Deck Coat lambswool applicator to apply the first coat. Oil 3-4 boards at a time
and always work along the whole length of the boards. Stopping in the middle of a board may lead to patchy results. Try to work quickly – the oil will penetrate the timber on its own so there’s no need to overwork it, but also don’t apply the oil too thinly. After the first coat, allow your deck to dry (about 1 hour), then apply a second coat in the same direction as the first coat to smooth out any inconsistent areas and deepen the colour’s intensity. Leave to dry and voila! Your deck is ready for summer entertaining.

hen Sam and Tineka Hoskin finally moved into their first home with their four children after seven years living in a minor dwelling, they were over the moon about being home owners but less than enthused about the house’s quirks. “There were strange add-ons to the house, like a door to go outside right beside the toilet and a really small room not big enough for anything at the end of the hallway,” says Tineka. “It was very dark and closed in and the ceilings were covered with ceiling tiles.” However, the couple loved the heritage home’s original wood panelling, high ceilings and kauri floors and set about both restoring its character and making it their own. “We wanted a home that felt warm and cosy but spacious,” says Tineka. “Sam found the Karen Walker Paints range from Resene and we chose Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue for most of the house, including the kitchen. We also used it in the girls’ room and paired it with a Resene wallpaper that is girly but will age with them for the next few years.” When it came to giving the Helensville, Auckland, house its facelift, the Hoskins had the ultimate advantage: not only is Sam a house painter, his sister and cousin are, too. “They all chipped in and got the painting done!” says Tineka.

Finder’s Fi Spruce up your outdoor area with some foraged furniture, or treat yourself to that must-have antique pot or mid-century piece Text by Fiona Ralph. Illustration by Eve Kennedy.
W
ithout buying anything, I’ve managed to end up with a whole new set of outdoor furniture – well, new to me at least. Having moved house and cleared out some dead and dying deck furniture, I was ready for some fresh pieces but, with it being winter and all, I hadn’t made any moves to replace anything. Luckily the secondhand universe stepped in and provided items from neighbours, family and new friends. Combined with our outdoor table, handmade for us as a wedding gift, and op-shopped beanbags and chairs, we’ve cobbled together a full suite for next to nothing.
You’ve got to be quick to spot the streetside bargains. I was driving along in my new neighbourhood and saw someone cleaning out their house, and was stoked to discover a near-new sun lounger had been placed out on the street. Having finally parted with my 10-year-old rusted and ripped-beyond-repair lounger, I had a quick chat with the owner, who went inside and got the cushion for me. Now I’m just patiently waiting for the sun to come out.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH My new neighbours were moving to the South Island and had placed a whole lot of plants on the street for sale. Unfortunately by the time I popped over with some cash, they had been snapped up, but I told them to let me know if they had anything else that needed a new home. When they brought a cane outdoor couch around with a $10 sign on it, I was out of town, but my pet sitter gave them my number to complete the sale. They never ended up getting in touch, and I was

still away when they moved out, so if you’re reading this, please send me your bank account details!
FAMILY FRIENDLY Receiving hand-me-downs is still one of my favourite modes of ‘shopping’. My motherin-law gave us her outdoor chairs when she moved house earlier this year and we still have all her plant pots from her move before that. Add to these a new-to-me vintage planter from my parents and we’ve got some serious planting to do come summer.

or an easy spring get-together, how about setting it outside? Being nestled in nature takes the stress out of entertaining and helps to make even the simplest spread feel special. Not only does the mess you make not matter so much, there’s something therapeutic about eating outdoors. The cicadas and birds singing in the background, accompanied by the whisper of leaves in the trees… I can’t imagine a nicer backdrop for enjoying delicious food and some fine company. For the menu, bread and dips are my idea of the perfect platter for sharing. Here are a few simple recipes to try.
WHIPPED RICOTTA DIP With the help of a food processor, ricotta can be transformed into a creamy and elegant dip. 200g fresh ricotta ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil Juice ½ lemon Zest 1 lemon Pinch sea salt 1 Add all the ingredients to a food processor and process for a minute or so until smooth. Transfer to a serving dish and finish with a little freshly cracked pepper.
124 | yhg
GOLDEN SOURDOUGH CROSTINI
⅓ cup grated parmesan
When you’re weary of crackers and feel like something different, golden toasted sourdough can hit the spot quite perfectly.
2 cloves garlic Zest 1 lemon
½ loaf sourdough bread ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse until you have a rustic, chunky consistency. Season to taste.
Flaky sea salt
CITRUS & HERB SEA SALT 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. 2 Cut the sourdough into 1cm-thick slices, then cut into quarters to make small, bitesized triangles. 3 Using a pastry brush, coat each side of the bread pieces with oil and place on the tray. 4 Sprinkle with sea salt then bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. 5 Serve alongside the ricotta dip.
TOASTED WALNUT & PARMESAN PESTO This is my daughter Bella’s recipe (we love to experiment with different nuts and herbs for our pesto). It’s basically foolproof and any leftovers make a fabulous addition to your pasta sauce. 1 cup toasted walnuts 1 cup tightly packed basil leaves 1¼ cups extra virgin olive oil
This quick salt recipe makes a lovely gift. It’s fantastic for sprinkling over meat, seafood or crisp fried eggs. 2 cups pink rock salt 2 Tbsp smoked paprika 4 Tbsp dried thyme 3 Tbsp dried lemon zest 2 Tbsp chilli flakes 1 Add all the ingredients to a food processor and pulse until roughly ground. Divide between 4-6 small glass jars, screw on the lids, and tie with a piece of twine.

ROSEMARY FOCACCIA WITH SALUME SERVES 10-14
INGREDIENTS 10g active dried yeast 300ml lukewarm water 420g plain flour ⅓ cup (80ml) extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing and drizzling 1 tsp salt, plus extra for sprinkling 1½ Tbsp rosemary leaves Thinly sliced salume, to serve 1 Combine yeast and water in a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook and leave to dissolve (1 minute). Add flour, oil and salt and knead until a smooth and an elastic dough forms (5-7 minutes). Transfer to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel and set aside until doubled in size (1 hour). 2 Knock back dough, then roll out on a lightly floured surface to a 20cm x 30cm rectangle. Transfer to a lightly oiled shallow 20cm x 30cm tin and leave, covered with a tea towel, until dough rises to the top edge (30 minutes-1 hour). Preheat oven to 200°C. 3 Lightly press fingertips into dough to create a dimpled effect, then scatter with rosemary and sprinkle with salt to season. Drizzle all over with oil and bake until golden and cooked through (25-30 minutes). Cool in tin for 5 minutes, then carefully turn out onto a wire rack to cool to room temperature (or serve it warm). Serve focaccia sliced with salume.
HAZELNUT & CHOCOLATE SWIRL NOUGAT SERVES 10-14
INGREDIENTS 450g roasted hazelnuts 4 sheets confectioner’s rice paper/wafer paper (not to be confused with rice paper wrappers; from specialty food stores and baking stores) 570g caster sugar 345g mild-flavoured honey 180g liquid glucose/glucose syrup (from specialty food stores, baking stores and some supermarkets) 100ml water 3 egg whites 120g dark chocolate (50-72 percent cocoa), melted
3 Combine sugar, honey, glucose and water in a pan over medium heat and stir to dissolve sugar, then increase heat to medium-high. When mixture reaches 120°C on a sugar thermometer (6-10 minutes), start whisking egg whites in an electric mixer on medium speed. Continue cooking sugar mixture until it reaches 135°C. The egg white should be firm; if not, increase speed. When firm peaks form, pour sugar syrup into egg white in a thin stream, whisking continuously. Continue whisking until smooth, glossy and puffed (4 minutes).
1 (NB: You’ll need a sugar thermometer for this recipe.) Preheat oven to 100°C. Place hazelnuts on an oven tray and warm in the oven.
4 Fold nuts through mixture and swirl in melted chocolate until marbled (do not overmix). Transfer to tin, smooth with wet knife and top with rice paper. MEET + GREET Louise Hanlon, (landscape designer), her husband Nick, Maxim, 18, Scarlett, 14, plus Monty the dog.
N
ursing and landscape design may seem like two very different professions but for Auckland-based designer Louise Hanlon, they are very similar. Giving up her career as a nurse to retrain as a landscape designer was really just a matter of swapping people for plants, she laughs. The trade has been a successful one if the garden Louise shares with husband Nick and their two teenage children Maxim and Scarlett in Orakei is any indication. Olive hedging, carefully placed trees, limestone paths and raised beds filled with native grasses and flowering perennials all combine to create a sense of peaceful privacy, as well as a haven for insects and birds. “As a landscape designer, it was at the forefront of my mind to have a positive effect on the environment, however small that may seem in a suburban garden,” Louise says of her design. “Also, space is a luxury today, so I wanted to create something of beauty and atmosphere that would draw us out into the garden to make the most of it. The new garden also needed to be integrated with what was already in existence.”
yhg | 139
A raised bed built from box-formed concrete connects the deck and hoggin (crushed limestone) area, and the same material was used to create a freestanding wall that helps define a firepit space.
THE SITE The main existing feature was a swimming pool which lacked privacy in the northwest-facing back garden. Apart from that, the site was essentially a blank slate, with flat lawn areas front and back and a large expanse of decking. “I could see an opportunity to remove the back lawn that was weedy and cracked in summer and shaded and muddy in winter,” explains Louise. “The front garden had lawn but no other plants. It was quite unwelcoming.”
THE DESIGN Four key factors drove the final design concept. The first was Louise’s desire for a droughttolerant garden that could also withstand Auckland downpours. This influenced the second, which was to get rid of the lawn. “Lawn is a monoculture that doesn’t offer much in the way of biodiversity,” she says. “Coupled with its high water usage in summer, there are alternatives that environmentally make more sense. I liked the appearance and function of hoggin, a crushed limestone surface that binds together when compacted but remains permeable. You can kick a ball, ride a bike and play games on it. There would be no weeding, mowing, or fertilising, either.” Privacy from the road above was also an important consideration. Louise’s response was to strategically position trees with a broad canopy, such as the summer flowering crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) and weeping peppermint tree (Agonis flexuosa). The trees will screen the garden from above and provide shade once their canopies have filled out. The final key factor was biodiversity. Louise designed a wide perennial garden bed where she could plant the variety of different species necessary to attract birds and insects throughout the year. “It also gives me space to trial new plants for their hardiness,” she adds.
THE CONSTRUCTION To integrate old with new, Louise planned a strong structural layout. A wood-formed concrete planter intersects the original deck and extends into the new hoggin area. Creating wood-formed walls during winter can be a challenge, but the team at Second Nature carried out the construction without a hitch. “Wood-formed walls are an art form and need skilled craftsman to build them,” says Louise.
140 | yhg
G
PICK ‘N’ MIX The planting was chosen to create plenty of year-round interest, as well as being appealing to a wide range of furred and feathered friends (including the family pooch).
Another concrete wall was used to define a firepit area that has become a gathering point for Maxim and Scarlett, extending the use of the garden into the night. Corten steel edges the garden beds around the perimeter.
THE PLANTING Louise’s mantra for plant selection was: choose the right plant for the right place. “It is much easier to work with nature than against it,” she points out. In the perennial beds, native grasses Chionochloa flavicans and Carex testacea mingle with perennials Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’ and Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’. Mexican lily (Beschonaria yuccoidies), Eucalyptus pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue’ and Podocarpus totara ‘Matapouri Blue’ add their muted blue-green foliage to the mix. At the front of the house,
clipped Westringia balls and spring-flowering Betchel’s crab-apple provide year-round structure. Crepe myrtles are a favourite tree. “We have three,” says Louise. “They are the perfect size for a suburban garden and flower profusely in summer when a lot of others have finished. But look for varieties that are resistant to the fungal disease powdery mildew,” she advises. Louise finds her revamped garden therapeutic. “As there is plenty of seasonal variation, there’s always something emerging or fading away. Bee-watching is also a good mindful activity! I do a little garden taming often and find that is the most enjoyable way to keep things looking good.” • Visit Louise’s garden as part of the Auckland Garden DesignFest, 16-17 November. gardendesignfest.co.nz

arbecuing has long been a part of the Kiwi summer experience, but more and more people want to take their al fresco cooking to the next level with a built-in outdoor kitchen. So what elevates an outdoor space from basic barbecue area to kitchen status? According to James Higgins, general manager of Outdoor Concepts, it’s your cooking set-up. “People who are shopping for outdoor kitchens are looking for the ability to cook outside in a more sophisticated way, not necessarily on your typical barbecue,” he says. “Although Kiwis are used to barbecue cooking, a standard barbecue doesn’t always create a great cooking dynamic. Low-cost models are prone to grease fires and they cook food poorly. Built-in barbecues look great and also create that smoky flavour and outdoor ambience you can’t get inside.” Outdoor kitchens take the fun, open-air vibe of a barbecue and add the convenience and elegant cooking experience of preparing food indoors. If you have the budget to build one, they really are the best of both worlds.
The planning
Use these six questions to help you come up with a clear plan for your outdoor kitchen before you hit the shops.
1
What will your outdoor kitchen be used for? Is it simply to cook meals outside
without continual trips inside for drinks, cutlery and plates? Or are you a passionate foodie and want to produce gourmet dishes for your friends al fresco while you all enjoy the garden? 2 What do you like to cook? One advantage of having an outdoor kitchen is that you can supplement the cooking appliances you have inside. Barbecues are the obvious choice, but you can also opt for outdoor ovens for pizza and bread, as well as rotisseries, smokers, wok burners and teppanyaki plates.
3
Where will your kitchen be located?
4
How can you maximise the usefulness of your outdoor kitchen? Try to make it
If you have an existing outdoor entertaining area, the answer will be obvious, but if not, easy access from your indoor kitchen is key to minimise running in and out between the two. It will also cost less to connect to utilities such as power, gas and water.
usable all year round. This means creating shelter from wind, sun and rain with screens and overhead canopies, especially for the cook (avoid combustible materials over the barbecue, though!).
144 | yhg
How will your kitchen be organised? The same general principles apply for kitchens outdoors as they do indoors, with the size, position and proximity of refrigeration, hot areas (barbecues, ovens, cooktops), wet areas and dry areas (prep benches) all designed for maximum efficiency. One simple approach is to divide the outdoor kitchen into three main zones: preparation, cooking and serving. If you’re still unsure, talk to a kitchen designer. 5
6
What will your kitchen look like? For a really
stunning effect, use materials and detailing that complement or repeat those inside the house, such as matching benchtops, door hardware and cabinetry.
WHAT DO I NEED? A good, functional outdoor kitchen will include: + A built-in cooking appliance + At least a metre of food prep space Plus, for added convenience: + A sink + An outdoor fridge (different from an indoor model) + Shelter from wind and ideally from rain or sunshine, too + Storage for pots, pans and utensils + Lighting – both task and ambient + A heater, for year-round comfort
G The cooking Decide what sort of cooking you want to do outside and everything else will fall into place. Outdoor cookers can vary widely in cost – a simple charcoal barbecue can be picked up for less than $50, whereas a top-end built-in outdoor stove will set you back around $7000, and that’s before installation. James from Outdoor Concepts says it’s worth spending a bit more for a really good cooking experience. “You need to spend upwards of $1000 for a fantastic, good-quality appliance that cooks well and will last.” He recommends the Weber Family Q for a reasonably priced cooker that is good quality.
$
Standard
If you want to create a functional cooking space outside on a budget, a standard barbecue can still offer plenty of enjoyment, as well as that delicious smoky flavour. Look for a model that can sit on a benchtop so you can create the permanent, built-in look of an outdoor kitchen without the expense of hooking it up to power or gas.

A good mid-range cooking appliance will really take your outdoor kitchen to the next level. By investing in this piece of equipment and carefully planning your prep area, you’ll set yourself up for many years of outdoor cooking bliss, regardless of whether or not you also choose to install a sink or fridge.

Superb
If you’re serious about creating a functional, bespoke outdoor kitchen and money is no object, James recommends American brand DCS, which creates top-of-the-line outdoor kitchen appliances. “They offer high-quality materials and unmatched durability,” he says. “With regular maintenance, these appliances will last a very long time and look great.” Two types of cooking appliance – a pizza oven plus a barbecue – is the dream scenario.

The budget We break down the structures, fixtures and the extras you can add to your outdoor kitchen at three price points.
Up to $5k: Cheap & cheerful With a little creativity and a DIY attitude, you can easily create a great outdoor kitchen on a budget. Invest in a good cooking appliance, then browse Trade Me or the hardware store to build your food prep space. “A good cooking appliance and a good design takes you a long way,” says James from Outdoor Concepts. “If you do a little DIY and have a mate to help you, you can bring it in under $5k.” Shelter This budget most likely won’t extend to a permanent shelter, unless someone close to you is a builder, so you’ll need a cooker than can be brought indoors when not in use or a good cover to keep it dry. Food prep Hit the op-shops and Trade Me to find a sturdy old work bench that will stand up to being left outside. A concrete or stone top is ideal, but steel or hardwood would be fine too – you’ll need a cover to keep the rain off, though. Look for something of a generous size, at least a metre long and 60cm deep, with a storage shelf underneath. Alternatively, you could get on the tools and build a table to suit your space. It doesn’t have to be perfect – the rustic look is ideal for an outdoor kitchen with character. Paving Ideally, your outdoor kitchen will already be situated on a paved surface, but if you’ve only got grass to work with, go online and find instructions for how to lay a few simple pavers or a gravelled area. This will make your kitchen feel more established for relatively low cost. A sink might be possible if your outdoor kitchen is close to the house and the plumbing is relatively easy to access. A fridge is probably out of the question as you’ll need a safe power supply (extension cords are a no-no if you want to create a beautiful space) and a standard fridge won’t cut it – outdoor fridges cost more. Try bringing an ice bucket out to your cooking space to keep drinks and ingredients cool. A heater if you have a bit of money left in the budget, make your outdoor kitchen work hard all year round with a freestanding gas heater or chiminea for midwinter pizza nights.
146 | yhg
PIZZA OVENS The must-have accessory for many outdoor chefs these days is a wood-fired pizza oven. Depending on how geeky you want to get about your margherita, you can build your own oven from scratch or purchase a ready-made model. You’ll need to think about storing dry timber for your fire and ventilating it properly so that smoke doesn’t blow straight back into your house (or your neighbour’s). The beauty of a pizza oven is that it creates atmosphere – the combination of the flames, the heat and the smoky aroma is pretty special, and you can also use it to cook a variety of foods, not just pizza. However, pizza ovens require plenty of prep (taking up to 1.5 hours to heat up) and cleaning to keep them working well. If you love pizza but don’t want the hassle of a full-size oven, a small charcoal or wood-fired pizza cooker, or a pizza-box attachment for your barbecue might do the trick.

$5-$30k Functional & fabulous In order to avoid doing DIY, you’ll need to hire a professional to build your outdoor kitchen and possibly design it as well. Many landscape architects now specialise in outdoor kitchens, and by hiring a specialist you’ll ensure a great design that’s tailored to your home and to how your family likes to live. Shelter if you’re working at the upper end of this budget, you should consider building a freestanding pergola to offer shelter from rain. If your outdoor kitchen is adjacent to your home, you might be able to get away with an awning
attached to the side of the house. Even a shade sail will make your kitchen more user friendly during hot weather. Don’t forget to shield your cooking area from the wind, either with a permanent fence or some hedging plants in containers or raised beds. Food prep You can likely afford either a bespoke bench to suit your space or a modular outdoor kitchen bench with built-in storage. If you’re having something built, look to the materials inside your kitchen to create a cohesive look and feel. Paving create a simple paved area or deck that includes space for dining as well as cooking.
Talk to your landscaper about creating a good sense of flow between your cooking space and adjoining garden or indoor spaces, and use existing trees, plants and structures to make your kitchen feel like part of the landscape. A sink and a fridge should be part of your kitchen plan, but will likely influence where it can be located as you’ll want to minimise plumbing and electrical costs. “Lots of people overlook a sink, but if you want a proper functional kitchen, you need a sink,” says James. “And a fridge isn’t essential, it’s more like a next step. But a proper outdoor fridge isn’t cheap.”
yhg | 147
$30k+: Al fresco luxury With a high-end budget, your outdoor kitchen is limited only by space and your imagination. A custom-made kitchen is likely to be on your wishlist, as is a broader landscaping plan that may include an outdoor living and dining space, as well as a kitchen. Shelter If you’re not already planning a built-on extension to your home to accommodate an outdoor kitchen, you’ll definitely be looking to create a permanent covered area for cooking and entertaining. A louvred roof that can be opened and closed to repel rain or keep the sun off is the shelter of choice for many outdoor chefs. Food prep You’ll be looking at commissioning some built-in cabinetry or possibly deploying a high-end modular solution with a good-quality benchtop. If space allows, you may wish to design your outdoor kitchen as an extension of your indoor space so that when doors are opened, you and your guests can enjoy that seamless flow. Paving and decking Think about your whole space and what you want to do there. Cooking is a given, but do you also want to serve and entertain? And perhaps retire to a lounge area for a digestif? Your deck or patio will need to be large enough to accommodate all your needs. Also think about building smooth transitions between spaces by using sympathetic materials and planting. A sink and a fridge A sink is a musthave, as is at least one fridge. One fridge for food and another for drinks will give you that luxurious convenience only a high-end budget can buy. Bells and whistles Still got some budget to spend? Think about all the ways you can make your outside space look and feel amazing. Install a separate outdoor sound system or extend your indoor set-up so it can play music outside, too. Talk to a lighting designer about adding appropriate lights for both food prep and more ambient functions (especially if you like hosting parties). As well as your cooking set-up, you might wish to install a fireplace just for heat and atmosphere, or simply a gas fire or heater for winter evenings. Love sports and movies? It’s time to think about an outdoor TV set-up. Get creative and have fun! • Ensure you use a Registered Master Builder for any outdoor building work. Find one near you at masterbuilder.org.nz.

Forward thinking A soft green fringe and pretty courtyard help this home ‘bed in’ and bloom Text and perspective drawing by Carol Bucknell. Illustration by Pippa Fay.
READER’S LETTER
Dear Carol, I would really like some advice on creating a new front garden. We have recently completed our renovation and now need to focus on the outdoors. Our front garden faces northeast, is sheltered and gets sun until midto-late afternoon. We are located on the coast in the suburb of Hataitai, Wellington. I would like an easycare garden with round buxus, white hydrangeas and maybe some feature rocks or small trees. For our colour scheme, I’d like to keep to green, white and purple with a pop of red, perhaps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Linda Lum, Wellington

FRONT OF HOUSE
PAVE THE WAY
SOFT TOUCH
Create a sense of arrival by crafting a small courtyard space alongside the entry porch, between the driveway and the house. Plant a small tree at its centre, lighting it at night to make the courtyard feel more special. A water bowl or piece of sculpture could also be added to the space.
Connect the house to the garden by edging the base of the house alongside the courtyard with a soft green fringe/hedge of coastaltolerant plants.
04
Give visitors an alternative approach to the house by replacing the lawn in courtyard area with a low-maintenance, permeable surface such as gravel or hoggin (crushed limestone). Trim tree’s lower branches to allow movement through the space. Continue this soft paving around front of house if desired. Edge with dark-stained timber or metal.
GO ROUND
05
Plant topiary spheres of coastal-tolerant shrubs around the small tree in a cluster. Some could be cloud-pruned, a Japanese style of shaping plants into naturalistic forms.
FLOWER POWER At the front and along eastern (left) side of lawn/gravel plant an informal border of coastaltolerant flowering shrubs.
06
ON THE EDGE Define the edge of the border with small perennials. To make lawn-mowing easier (or contain gravel/hoggin if you resurface this area) edge with dark-stained timber or metal. Also plant some perennials into the courtyard gravel, to create further interest.

TIP Lawns can be tricky to grow in coastal and shady spots. Replacing grass with a semi-permeable material such as gravel, and then planting into it, can be a low-cost and easy-care alternative.

OUTDOOR DIARY
November checklist Text by Carol Bucknell. Illustrations by Pippa Fay.
FLOWER OF THE MONTH
SWEET PEA What’s not to like about sweet peas? They’re easy to grow, have a gorgeous scent, come in beautiful pastel shades and deeper colours, and are climbers which means they’ll take up less space in the garden than your average pretty annual. Did I mention they’re great cut flowers, too? With these creds it’s no surprise that gardeners and florists almost everywhere are big fans. The seeds are large and not tricky to propagate which is handy because spring- and summer-flowering sweet peas are best grown from seed sown direct into the garden; soak seed overnight first for faster germination. For quicker results, buy seedlings but take care not to damage roots when planting. Choose a sunny spot out of the wind and use good supports for taller varieties. Water regularly and pick regularly (or deadhead) to prolong flowering.
Try these top tips for the month
152 | yhg
GROW THIS For great, low-cost Christmas presents, pot up flowering annuals and shrubs. Buy them now and liquid feed and water regularly so they’ll look lush and lovely come December. Try scented gardenia and lavender or easy-care alyssum, lobelia, petunia, carpet rose, fuchsia, zinnia and hydrangea. For smaller gifts, pop succulents into cute little pots. HEDGE IT Remember to keep newly planted hedges watered for the first 2-3 months or until established. Mature hedges look much smarter if given some TLC such as a spring feed of sheep pellets or blood and bone and a mulch of wellrotted compost or manure.
GREEN WISE Raising the height of your mower a notch during the warmer months gives more shade to the root zone of grass plants. Dig out invasive weeds like couch grass and dock in lawns, too, removing every bit of the root so weeds won’t resprout.
HIGH STAKES Before tall perennials such as dahlias, delphinium, salvia and gladioli grow too tall, position supports such as obelisks, stakes or steel frames around them. For best impact choose those which will add a structural element to flower beds.
WATER WORLD In dry areas it may be time to get out the hose or start the irrigation system. Check they are in good order; especially the latter as leaks can mean costly water wastage. Always water early in the morning to avoid fungal disease and evaporation.
G
Harvest 01

SALAD GREENS
NEW POTATOES
SMALL FRY
For the freshest salads, pick rocket, lettuce, radicchio and mesclun in the morning when leaves are fully hydrated. Do the same for leafy greens such as kale, spinach and silverbeet.
If there’s room for some carbs on your plate it’s hard to beat the taste and nutritional levels of homegrown spuds. Early varieties will be ready to harvest now in warmer areas. If you carefully scrape away soil around plants, you can remove larger tubers and re-cover tiny ones with soil so they keep growing. For maximum yields, keep mounding up soil around plants, covering new shoots and lower leaves, every 2 weeks.
Super-nutritious microgreens are the perfect solution for time- or space-poor gardeners. Harvest when they have 2 sets of leaves (ie slightly more mature than sprouts); snip off with scissors and add to salads, stir-fries or green smoothies. Many seed retailers sell microgreen mixes or you can make your own using the seeds of radish, lettuce, kale, onion, peas and virtually any other vegetable. Sow in small pots on window ledges or any sunny spot indoors or out.
02
TAKE HEART Hearting lettuces taste best if picked when firm and solid. By the time the heart starts to extend upwards the leaves will be bitter.
CAROL BUCKNELL GARDEN E D I TO R
Photography by Flash Studios.
TIP For better-sized fruit at harvest time, thin out fruit clusters on apple and pear trees once blossoms are finished. Do the same with plums to avoid branches breaking with their heavy fruit load. Other stone fruit such as cherries, peaches and nectarines do not generally overburden their trees.
Sow
Plant
It’s not too late to sow courgette seed if you live in an area with a good long summer period. Sow into individual pots so they can be easily transplanted into the garden without their roots being disturbed. Keep the pots in a warm spot for faster germination. Soil temperatures need to be around 15°C on a continuous basis for seedlings to go into the garden. Salad greens are among the easiest edibles to grow. Check out seed catalogues for interesting mixes such as ‘Lettuce Hint of Red’ from Kings Seeds (kingsseeds.co.nz) which is a blend of nutritious red-leaved lettuces. If you’re keen to encourage young vege gardeners and eaters try sowing baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and peas which are easy to grow and delicious straight from the garden. You can never have too many herbs – they’ll make even the dullest dish more interesting. It’s not too late to sow annual herbs such as parsley, coriander and basil. Avoid very hot spots for coriander and parsley as they can turn to seed quickly in summer.
Get those tomato plants in the ground now, ideally in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind, with well-drained, fertile soil. Make sure you stake tall varieties and feed with high-potash fertiliser. For something a little different try planting one of the heritage tomato varieties with striped, black, yellow, orange, green or purple skins. Remember tomatoes need feeding once fruit starts to set. Plant spinach seedlings in cooler areas before weather becomes too warm and plants bolt; or choose varieties that are resistant to bolting, or try New Zealand spinach, also known as kokihi. Many veges need pollinators to produce crops so plant as many attractants as you can near your kitchen garden – eg borage, nasturtium, calendula, alyssum, lobelia and marigolds. Plant watermelon when the soil is warm in your area. If it’s still a little cool, cover soil with black polythene to warm the root zone, just like growers do with strawberries. Avoid overwatering or fruit will turn squishy.
