ABOUT ME I’m Donna Caira, an interior designer and I live here with my husband, Anthony, a golf professional, and our daughters, Julia, 21 and Olivia, 18. OUR HOME A four-bed detached new build in Fife, Scotland, which we bought in June 2017. WHEN WE MOVED IN Every room was a sea of beige, and it was crying out for me to add character. AND NOW We gutted it, installing a new kitchen, removing all of the carpets and transforming it completely by decorating in a soothing monochrome palette. STYLE TIP Streamline your home with ‘joined up’ decorating schemes – I’ve used similar flooring and cohesive colour palettes throughout every room.

ith both our daughters now at university and lots of changes going on in Anthony’s golfing career, our large family home was proving impractical,’ says Donna. ‘We realised we needed to live somewhere much lower maintenance, which we could use as a base to travel to and from easily. This house is surprisingly spacious and it provided us with a blank canvas that we could quickly transform into somewhere we can all enjoy being together. Because no structural alterations were required, we got to focus on the fun side of buying a new house, like furnishings and decor. Our biggest undertaking was to build a garden room. Anthony drew up the plans and did all of the work himself. He refitted the kitchen as well and transformed the staircase with scaffolding planks to create a raw, distressed effect. I had seen an image of scaffolding stairs on Pinterest, which he did a great job of recreating. Anthony also added panelling to the walls in several rooms and built fitted wardrobes in the main bedroom. I love the atmosphere that you get from adding wooden panelling to walls. I was taken to visit a lot of National Trust properties when I was a child and the character added by wall panelling is something I took away with me from almost every visit. It sparked my imagination and creativity even then and is actually a really affordable way to fix any unevenness in a wall and super-efficiently cover a multitude of sins.
Decorative influences

‘I laid oak floors throughout and decided to not add any rugs as I think they are a headache to clean’
‘ADD INTEREST TO PALE WALLS WITH A GALLERY OF GRAPHIC PRINTS IN MONOCHROME COLOURS’ architecture there. Icelandic styling is very pared back and downsizing required us to do a lot of clearing out, which was quite emotional, so choosing to adopt this style helped motivate me to declutter. I have kept the details relatively simple, in keeping with this vibe, and chose to remove the ceiling coving and keep the skirtings and door mouldings very undefined. Once I’d

completed our clear-out, I chose new accessories very carefully. I hum and haw for ages over items – even something as small as a mug or a plate – but I wanted to make sure that everything I chose was spot on. I searched hard for designer finds and vintage pieces, too. Our small town was once famous for making lino and quality furniture, and a company called McIntosh Furniture,

Decide what height you’d like the panels to reach – halfway, three quarters or floor-to-ceiling. Create panels using MDF strips, which can be cut to size at a DIY store, with the depth no greater than your skirting board (you can either remove your skirting, or sit MDF on top). Use these strips to create your chosen panel shape – you can also adjust the panels to go around features such as windows and doors. Secure boards to the wall with strong glue such as No More Nails and panel pins. Ensure there are no pipes or cables behind the panels before placing the pins. Finally, paint the panels and background the same colour.

Despite the fact that this house is considerably smaller than our previous home, I have deliberately gone for some oversized furniture and chosen quite chunky accessories, such as a large-scale Newgate clock – I think this can create a deceptively spacious effect. I haven’t been afraid to use dark colours either, and have done so quite boldly, even choosing black for a lot of details. I like a muted palette, and the relatively sombre tones throughout this house were influenced by a recent trip to Amsterdam. While there, I noticed the Dutch use a lot of black and grey in their homes, inside and out, which really appealed to me. It felt very contemporary and translates well to our Scottish climate and light. I did all of the painting myself, it

was quite easy because new builds have beautifully plastered walls. But, equally, a modern house is also very unforgiving – it doesn’t disguise bumps and imperfections in the same way that a period property does. I discovered I had to achieve a very immaculate paint finish in order to get the crisp, minimal look that I wanted.

Start by measuring the width of the cushion pad. Then add 6cm to allow for the seam – so a 45cm-wide cushion pad will become 51cm. To work out the length, double this width and add an extra 10cm to allow for the envelope overlap. Cut your fabric to size, so in this example it will be 51cm by 112cm. Fold the edges of the two shorter ends over 1.5cm, press down and then fold over another 1.5cm. Pin in place and then use a sewing machine to stitch together. Fold the two shorter ends in to the middle of the fabric, making sure they overlap by 10cm to create the envelope opening. Pin and tack the cushion panel together. Pin along the unsewn edges and then machine stitch the two long sides. Clip the corners and turn the cushion cover right side out. Give the cover a final press before inserting the cushion pad.

We find they’re really versatile and will work in any style of property – they can make a fun, contemporary addition to a period home or add a beautiful, minimal element to a modern property. I love to mix old with new in any interior scheme. It’s mine and Anthony’s dream to build our own house one day, either here in Scotland or over in Italy, where Anthony’s family originate from. But even when we start building a home from scratch, I wouldn’t make it totally modern or totally period in style, I would always want it to be a mix of the two. Until the time comes to take on that project, this renovated new-build house is a stylish base for Anthony and I, and our two daughters, to call home and return to whenever we wish.’

ake a statement with a modern, edgy scheme. Continuity is key to pull off a bold look like this, so Donna kept to a similar colour palette throughout, teaming soft grey and cool white with darker charcoal and black. The scheme is offset with warm wood grains on flooring, worktops and furniture. Donna has gone for a mash-up of styles that sits Danish and Mid-Century classics alongside industrial and contemporary pieces, while artwork and accessories follow the theme, too, from black-and-white photography and abstract graphics to typography prints and neon signs.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Gill Deriu, I’m a social care worker, and I live with my husband Sandro, a chef, and our children Elia, 11, Jasper, nine, and Isa, six. OUR HOME A three-bedroom cottage in Cobh, Cork, built in 1907. WHEN WE MOVED IN It needed a lot of TLC – the property felt dated. AND NOW It’s by no means perfect, but the kitchen is my favourite room. It’s large but cosy, and is the heart of our home. STYLE TIP Paint everything white. That’s what we did to bring the light in as the rooms were quite dark. It worked – I’m really happy with the result. And white walls make a perfect backdrop for colourful furniture and art.

When Gill Deriu and her husband, Sandro, found a dark, dreary cottage, they knew it had the potential to become a colourful, quirky family home
W
hen my husband, Sandro, and I were in the process of looking for another rental property with more space, a friend told us that this house was on the market,’ says Gill, who can be found on Instagram at @gillderiu_. ‘We went to view it and fell in love with it straight away. There was pine everywhere, magnolia walls and the living room was very dark. The whole place needed a lot of work. But beyond the decor, it had everything we were looking for – a detached cottage with a big garden for our children to roam about in, and a really nice feel. The layout was quirky, with the front door opening directly onto the sitting room, and stairs running from the sitting room upstairs, but that didn’t put us off.
Mortgage woes
Our offer was accepted, but then our mortgage fell through at the last minute. We were so disappointed, but I was determined not to lose the property, so I asked the owner if it was possible to rent the cottage while we waited for our financing to come together, and he agreed. I promised we’d look after it like our own. The house was still on the market though, which was stressful at times as people kept coming round to view, but I knew deep down it was meant for us! Eventually we secured the mortgage we needed and the house was ours at last. I had fallen in love with the feel of the property.
The work begins
It was such a relief when we were finally the homeowners and able to start transforming it into our home. It did

need some updating. The walls had to be dry-lined throughout the whole house to get rid of damp, and there were problems with the drainage to the septic tank, so the garden had to be dug up and new pipes were installed. This was a huge undertaking but it had to be done. It was the most nail-biting part of the whole process. We just didn’t know what can of worms might open up when we started looking at the pipework. I still cross my fingers that we have put that one to bed! Upstairs, we had a rejig. We turned a large bedroom into two smaller rooms, and we changed the main bedroom’s en suite into the family bathroom.

room floor and it felt so much cleaner and brighter. Then we started on the kitchen. I never liked the oak kitchen with the terracotta floor in the dining area, so I tackled painting the kitchen cupboards myself, and I took down the wall units and replaced them with open shelving. We also put in an oak counter top on the island, so we could sit at it, and installed pendants. Getting the lighting right throughout the property was really important to me, as it’s so critical for creating mood and atmosphere. I knew I wanted it to look modern, with lots of character – and once I have the vision in my head I usually just go for it. Everyone gets it once they see it done – they’ve learnt to trust my instincts.

chill out there. It’s got so much life. It makes the house feel bigger than it is as it gives us so much living space. I loved the light, airy feel which it had from the beginning, but now it has more character and depth. We created our own hanging system for overhead lighting using branches from the garden and it feels very intimate. I think the lighting, open shelving and wider peninsula with seating were the biggest transformers for the kitchen space.
Mixing it up We’ve used a blend of natural materials upstairs along with a muted colour scheme to make the bedrooms a soothing, peaceful space. In our room there’s a lot of wood and we’ve added texture with natural linen and a bamboo lampshade. It’s definitely more colourful downstairs, though. The fabric,

furniture and rugs make the sitting room cosy, but we’ve kept clutter to a minimum. The sitting room is streamlined yet still intimate and eclectic. I generally don’t like the living area to be too busy – I love accessories but not too many or I feel they can overwhelm the space. We have three children and the house can easily get messy, so if the decor is quite streamlined, the kids’ clutter is less overpowering. I had to be mindful when choosing the colour and general aesthetic in my daughters’ room, as they share, and are different ages. Monochrome with a few colour pops work brilliantly.
ADDED INTEREST
‘Use plants, pictures and shelving to give every corner personality’
Budget buys
We didn’t really have a set budget – we had to spend all our contingency money on the essential hidden renovations like dry lining and pipework, so there wasn’t a set amount left over for decor. As a result, it made me flex my creative muscle to get the look I was after and think outside the box, which in hindsight was for the best. I love standing in one room and looking through to the next, so it’s important to me to tie in colours and accessories. I scoured my local shops – I found the sitting room rug buried in the sort of carpet shop you’d never usually go

Find three small branches of a similar size; if necessary, use a saw to cut them to an even size. Sand any rough edges. For a rustic finish, simply scrub clean with a brush, or for a pared-back finish, use a wallpaper scraper to remove the bark. Drill holes either end of the top branch of your hanger, about 1cm in. Use these as a guide and drill holes in the other branches. Lay the three branches flat, in the formation you want to hang them. Take a long length of string, fold the string in half and place it above the top branch. Thread one end of the string through the left-hand holes, starting at the top. Knot the string on the underside of each hole to hold the branch in place. Repeat with the right-hand side, leaving a loop at the top to hang it up with.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Adele Schiavone, 32, a criminal justice officer, and I live here with my husband Ryan, 33, a joiner, our son Harrison, three, and daughter, Hallie, two. OUR HOME A three-bedroom, semi-detached property built in 1905 in Fife, Scotland. We bought it in September 2016. WHEN WE MOVED IN The house was very neglected and hadn’t been decorated in years, plus it was heaving with botched DIY jobs. AND NOW The interior is decorated in my favourite soft colours, pretty patterns and Nordic-inspired accessories – it feels really light. STYLE TIP I always choose shades of colour that will be light and fresh in summer, but are still warm and cosy in winter.

‘Go for a boxy, minimalist sofa if you have a modern Scandi schemeÕ
ntil we saw this house come on the market in September 2016, we hadn’t been planning on moving at all,’ says Adele. ‘It was a large property in the ideal location and was a bargain price, too. Although it was completely neglected, we loved the size of the rooms and the tall ceilings. Despite being seven months pregnant and it being bad timing to take on a huge building project, we both knew that by modernising this house, we could create a home for our family to grow in. The house had been rented out previously and hadn’t had anything done to it for many years. Every room needed redecorating, the layout was a maze of doors and corridors, and the old carpets smelt really bad. As my husband is a joiner, he knew what we were taking on and the amount of work involved. He spent ages on our budget spreadsheet, working out all the costs to see if we could afford this doer-upper on our tiny budget. We thought that we were prepared, but as is the story with many building projects, there were a few hidden surprises to overcome.
First impressions When we showed our family around our new home for the first time, they thought we were crazy taking on such a big remodel, especially as I was so heavily pregnant. The house needed to have new electrics fitted and a central heating system installed, as well as new windows and doors. Downstairs, we wanted to change the internal layout to open up the space, while upstairs we needed to have a new bathroom fitted (it’s next on our list!). Luckily, both of our families are very handy and are amazing at DIY, so we knew that we could

trust them to help us get the place in shape. They became our workforce! We sold up and moved in with my mum during the building works. Our plan was to finish the house within two months, just in time for our daughter to be born. We quickly learned that our timeline was hopelessly optimistic. The whole project took four months longer than we expected and, at one point, we were living in my mum’s spare room with a toddler and a newborn!

Challenging times
We spent all our weekends and evenings at the house, stripping back the walls and ripping out all the fittings. My stepfather tackled the electrics for us, my father-in-law taped all the plasterboard and painted the house, and my brother-in-law did the brickwork. It really was a team effort. The kitchen was a narrow space with a separate utility room and our idea was to knock down an internal wall

It’s best to use a spray paint for this job. Try Rust-Oleum Metallic, £10 for 400ml, B&Q. Working in a well-ventilated area, mask the bottom edge of the shade and protect the outside of it from any spray paint. For even coverage, build the paint up gradually, letting it dry thoroughly between each layer to prevent any bubbling.

IDEA TO STEAL
‘Choose classic styling with a twist by fitting a herringbone splashback’
to make the room twice the size. There was also a massive stone brick Seventies fireplace in the living room and the en-suite bathroom had one of those avocado-coloured suites. Together, we pulled down walls, took out all the false ceilings and hacked the walls back to the brick. We ripped out everything we could, leaving an empty shell. All the floors were levelled and the rotting windows replaced with oakeffect uPVC ones. In the first two weeks, we filled six skips with debris from the house. We had a bit of a nasty surprise when the slate roof started leaking though, as we hadn’t budgeted on fixing
that! We called on my husband’s friend, who is a roofer, for help and to get our project back on track.
Decorating begins
After six months of solid work, we whitewashed the house from top to bottom and moved in in March 2017. Painting the plaster walls white made it feel like a home. We found our kitchen locally and my husband fitted it for us. I’d based the design and look of it around some industrial bar stools I’d found online. I love Scandinavian design, where they mix up white walls

Spotting a bargain As we’d moved from a smaller property, we discovered that we needed to buy more furniture. I love shopping for high-street bargains, but most recently I’ve discovered lots of smaller brands on Instagram. The kids’ rooms especially were decorated with finds I spotted on the app. My best buy is the Argos bench in the hall – the space is now a mini mudroom for removing the kids’ wellies.

boards, too, so they are protected from paint drips. Paint within the tape, using a contrasting colour to the existing wall. Repeat with a second coat, if needed. Once dry (leave for at least four hours), carefully peel away the tape to reveal your mural. ABOUT ME I’m Frankie Jackson, 45, and I live in a three-bedroom terraced house in east London with my daughter, Ava Lily, 10 and our shiatsu, Chewy. MY CHALLENGE I bought this house at auction and it was a total wreck. The old kitchen was in dire need of some TLC and I replaced the floorboards, plumbing and electrics. I also put in a new ceiling and replastered the walls. MY WISH LIST I was after a light and open feel with space for a dining area. I went for a modern, monochrome look, with splashes of my fave colour, yellow!

Frankie Jackson used her creative flair and love of one particular colour to give her crumbling old kitchen a new lease of life
B
uying a house in London was always going to be a challenge with my relatively small budget,’ says Frankie. ‘So I went to a house auction as it was the only way I could get a bargain. It was thrilling and terrifying at the same time. The house I had my eye on required a huge amount of work, especially the kitchen, which was practically non-existent. The walls and ceilings were covered in a horrific yellow stain from tobacco and the smell was foul. But because it needed so much work, I was able to buy it at a good price knowing I could put my own stamp on it.
Starting over
The so-called kitchen was located in the tiny space at the back of the house, which leads onto the garden. It was so cramped I knew it would need relocating. The kitchen area is really important to me as I love to cook and have family and friends over. In order to create a larger kitchendiner without extending the house, I had to maximise every inch, so the builder and I agreed to move the kitchen into the adjacent reception room. The builders explained that by removing the chimney breast I could locate a run of kitchen units along one wall, leaving space for a table on the other side. I also wanted to open up an existing archway to make the two areas feel more connected.
Choosing the kitchen
I then visited my local Howdens showroom and was drawn to the Shaker-style designs. I had my eye on the grey painted doors knowing they would add plenty of character and not date. The cup handles looked great on the display kitchen and gave the kitchen a classic

IDEA TO STEAL
‘Add a patterned blind using the same colour scheme to create an eye-catching feature’
Styling the room
I painted the walls in a pale grey paint and decided to go for some bold grey feature tiles to create an interesting splashback. I got the best of both worlds because it’s a mix of all my favourite patterns. Keeping with the same grey colour scheme, the patterned tiles don’t dominate the space but instead create a fun focal point. I got Hillarys to measure up for a blind and

feel. Knowing my tight budget wouldn’t stretch to quartz or marble worktops, I went for a white square-edge laminate worktop, which was practical and affordable. It contrasts well with the grey units and gives the kitchen a fresh, bright feel. I chose grey laminate flooring throughout for downstairs.
Love it
I chose one of its new Abigail Ahern fabrics, featuring a zigzag pattern and edged it with a mustard fringe.
Adding colour
I adore yellow and knew it would seep into the kitchen somehow. Before long I was getting out my tester pots and painting some vases and letters in my favourite shade. I found the perfect table and chairs from Wayfair for the other side of the room. It’s a compact dining set and fits snugly into the corner without making you feel squashed. I added a geometric print rug to go underneath to zone off the area. When I first saw the old kitchen I knew there was a huge amount of work to do but it’s all been worth it – the new kitchen is exactly what I wanted.’

LAMINATE FLOORING
Frankie’s choice:
LAMINATE FLOORING
Want an inexpensive, practical flooring solution? Laminate may be the answer…
What’s it made up of? Consisting of four different layers tightly sandwiched together, laminate starts with a base layer that repels moisture and keeps the floor rigid during installation, then comes a solid fibreboard core, which makes up the bulk of the depth. Onto this, a thin design layer is applied – basically a high-resolution photograph of real wood, stone or tiles. Finally, there’s a protective layer to repel scratches and stains.
Is it hard wearing? It’s not the most durable option out there, compared to porcelain tiles or engineered planks, for example, but recent improvements in splash-safe finishes, impact resistance and scratch protection means it will easily cope with

the wear and tear of family life. However, it’s only designed to cope with surface spills and isn’t generally recommended for wet areas, such as bathrooms.
Is there anything I should look out for? Some laminate flooring can be noisy. A decent underlay will help dampen sound, but there are versions with sound insulation, too. Laminate is also prone to electrostatic discharges. If you tend to get a lot of electric shocks, look for an antistatic one.
How much does it cost? As with most things, you get what you pay for. Thickness is often a good indicator of quality. It’s possible to buy 6mm-thick laminate from as little as £5-£10sq m, while 8mm-thick versions are around £10-20sq m, and 10mm-thick laminate will cost in excess of £20sq m. Don’t forget to add the cost of underlay and installation to your budget.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Tracy Rappolt, 46, and I’m a designer. I live with my husband Simon, 46, a company director, and our two children, Lucia, 14, and Lorenza, 10, in a three-bed 300-year-old cottage in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We moved here in November 2018. MY CHALLENGE The bathroom in our cottage was downstairs and in need of a complete overhaul – it had a walk-in shower and Sixties-style fitted units. We couldn’t afford to relocate the room upstairs, so we decided to just renovate it and add a bath. MY WISH LIST I loved the idea of a roll-top bath and elegant shower. – a grown-up scheme that would suit the period of the property.

B IDEA TO STEAL
‘If you’re tight on space, use a short bath to make the room work for you’
oth my husband Simon and I have a bit of a passion for home renovation, and this house was one we couldn’t resist,’ says Tracy. ‘It’s an old terraced cottage in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, an area we know well and somewhere we knew we’d be happy to live for a few years. We’re serial movers – we constantly revamp houses and then move on to the next project. The property was a good price, but it needed major renovation work. On the outside it looked like a pretty chocolate box cottage, but inside it looked like something out of the Sixties. The previous owners had tried to modernise it, but the decor wasn’t in keeping with the house’s character – it’s over 300 years old. We tackled the renovation room by room, re-exposing the beams in the main living areas and removing anything that wasn’t working. The bathroom is very small and situated downstairs at the back of the house, off the kitchen. We thought about taking space from one of the bedrooms and relocating the bathroom upstairs, but when we looked at the cost and the work involved, the finances didn’t add up. So we decided to keep it where it was and make it work for us.

We wanted the design and style of the bathroom to be quite modern, but it also needed to reflect the heritage of the cottage… and my big ask was to try to fit a roll-top bath and shower in the room. Because it’s a small space (only 2.2m by 3.3m), we were restricted in what we could do. The original layout would still work for us, but we needed to get rid of the fitted Sixties-style built-in units and horrible old shower. I spent ages searching for a roll-top bath that was short enough to fit the space and eventually found this

corner-fitted design, which came with a shower screen and elegant chrome legs, online at Victoria Plum. I love a shower and wanted a design that had a traditional feel, so I was thrilled when I discovered the perfect chrome design by Hudson Reed. It came with a large showerhead and integrated bath filler, which meant it could be fitted to the wall, leaving the bath area free of clutter. To complement the shower, we fitted a Victorian-style sink and radiator, which has a heated towel rail. I toyed with lots of ideas about what to put on the walls, but because of the size of the room, I felt that pattern might make it feel busy and even smaller. In the end, I decided to go with a textured white metro tile, which we had laid in a traditional brick style. We used them on two walls – the one behind the shower and the other behind the sink and loo. For the floor, we chose lightly textured tiles, which have a slight grip so the children don’t slip on them.
‘Use a contrasting grout to define the tiles and add a modern feel’
Styling the room
With the main elements in place, I turned my attention to the two remaining walls, which I painted in a bold grey. I wasn’t sure about the shade at first, but I felt that the room needed something strong to give it a focal point. Simon was worried that the colour would make the space feel closed in, but it work wells with the white suite and wall tiles. I fitted a circular mirror above the sink and found a wire storage shelf for the wall at the end of the bath. An off-grey wooden blind was perfect for the window, and I introduced pops of colour with plants and aqua-green towels. The bathroom suits the period of the cottage, but also feels modern. I now look forward to having a bath at the end of the day!’

ADD A SHOWER SCREEN
First, choose your style of screen. There are plenty of designs to choose from, such as single, fully framed fixed panels, folding screens that concertina back to the wall, decorative printed or etched designs and sleek frameless models. Make sure the screen is safe. All good-quality designs should be made from toughened glass that won’t shatter if broken. Most will be 4mm to 8mm thick. Check that the screen has a tight seal where it meets the bath. To keep it clean, wipe with a squeegee after every shower, or look for a screen that has a coating to help reduce limescale marks. Make sure your glass panel is long enough to contain spray properly, especially if you have a powerful shower.

COMPACT FITTINGS
Tracy’s choice:
COMPACT FITTINGS
Finding the right pieces to fit a small bathroom needn’t scale down your style
Where do I start? First, draw up a shopping list of essentials. Every bathroom needs a loo and a basin, but do you need a bath? Many estate agents still advise keeping the bath, particularly if it’s the only one in the house, but if you are definitely ‘shower people’, rip it out. Today’s renovationsavvy buyers are not fazed by the lack of a bath and you only need a 90sq cm footprint for a decent shower, while a standard bath requires 170x80cm.
What if I want it all? A two-in-one shower-bath, like Tracy has installed, is a great compromise. The showering area in a bath is actually much more spacious than any separate enclosure you’ll be able to shoehorn in

next to it. Do think about the volume of water required – some shower-baths are wider at one end, which requires more water to fill when in bath mode. Also, consider the age and agility of users; not everyone can easily access a bath.
Any more tips? Get a basin vanity unit – pedestal basins are a wasted storage opportunity. Slimline, cloakroom vanity units are worth exploring, too, but make sure the bowl is big enough to wash your face in comfort. Shower enclosures with pivot or sliding doors are better in a tight space than outward opening models.
3 of the best
SMALL-SCALE ROLL-TOPS
Will everything fit? The easiest way to work out any bathroom layout is good old-fashioned graph paper. Cut out scale-size pieces for your fittings and move them around a drawing of your room. Allow at least 70cm clear walkway in front of all fittings, and think about the direction that doors will open – the main entrance, shower door and any vanity or storage units.
Are corner fittings ever a good idea? They come into their own when there is a window or doorway taking up precious wall space, and can give you that extra room needed to squeeze in a towel rail or slimline storage unit. But, corner fittings can cost more, so check that the extra space will be worthwhile.

How to bleed your
RADIATORS
T
Get your heating working efficiently to keep your home toasty while saving money on energy bills
o quote Game of Thrones, ‘winter is coming’, but unlike Jon Snow, most of us favour switching on the central heating over draping ourselves in furs. Ensure your radiators stay working to the max by taking time to let any trapped air escape. The telltale signs your rads need bleeding are if they’re taking too long to heat up or if they’re colder at the top than the bottom. It’s easier than you think!
1
Regular bleeding will ensure your home stays warm and bills stay low
DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM
Turn all your radiators up to maximum temperature, then when hot, assess each one by carefully touching the top and bottom to check whether there are inconsistencies in warmth. Cool spots mean there could be air trapped inside the radiator, and this needs to be let out for it to work efficiently.
2
TURN OFF YOUR HEATING
Let the radiators cool down completely before you begin to bleed them. If you don’t, you’re at risk of being scalded or losing too much water.
Place a bowl or tray underneath the radiator ready to catch any water. Fit the radiator key into the square bit in the centre of the valve at the top – if this has a groove you can also use a screwdriver. Use a towel to catch any drips, then twist it slowly anti-clockwise to allow air out.

MOST BOILER MANUFACTURERS HAVE ONLINE TUTORIALS ON BLEEDING RADIATORS, CHECKING PRESSURE AND OTHER HANDY TIPS

RELEASE THE TRAPPED AIR
You should hear the air escaping – when this subsides or water starts to come out, tighten the valve again quickly. Work your way around your home, bleeding each radiator in turn.

MULTI TOOL
Bahco nine-way radiator and services cabinet key, £21.99, Screwfix
SWITCH YOUR CENTRAL HEATING BACK ON
Check the pressure gauge on your boiler. It should be between 1.5 and 2 bar, however, if the pressure is too low, you’ll need to top it up using the lever or tap on your boiler. Read your boiler handbook for more information.

TRY YOUR HAND AT... PATCHWORK
Many people associate patchwork with a musty quilt in their grandparents’ loft. However, there are a whole host of modern patchwork designs giving a realm of creative possibilities. Using textile remnants to make something new is a thrifty and eco-conscious way of sewing, too, and designs can be as simple as you like – from basic squares and triangles to English Paper Piecing (hand-sewn hexagon shapes). Pre-cut fabric packs are a great way to get started and with a few squares and a rotary cutter you can whip up a cushion cover in a few hours.

TO ONLINE SCAMS
Here’s all the advice you need to stay one step ahead of the bad guys and keep your online accounts safe from fraudsters
W
ith more of us spending longer online – whether that’s working, shopping or socialising – we risk falling victim to cyber criminals who are more devious than ever. Find out how to keep your data safe.
How do online accounts get hacked and what can I do to prevent it? There are several ways accounts can get hacked. Phishing scams ask you to confirm your password on an account, often under the guise of looking like an official email, so it’s important to ignore these messages. Also, using an easy password or the same one across multiple sites puts you at risk. Mix up your passwords and make them at least 16 characters. If your apps or software aren’t up to date, you may also be vulnerable – developers provide updates to try and stay one step ahead of the hackers. Lastly, unsecure wi-fi networks can also be risky – only log on to wi-fi accounts that you trust.
Don’t rush to change your password – the hacker will see it. Run your antivirus software to find and delete anything harmful. Once that’s done, change your passwords and security questions for your email and online services such as Netflix, Amazon and your bank accounts.
I’m getting messages that my computer has been hacked – what should I do? Ignore and delete them! Hackers prey on fear and often use pop-up warnings to tell you that your computer will be at risk unless you download antivirus software. If you do, you could download a virus.
I’ve been scammed. Help! Don’t be embarrassed – scams are constantly refined to make them as
