tep inside the HGTV Urban Oasis 2019 and you feel transported from a bustling city to the dreamy Scandinavian countryside. That’s the mood designer Brian Patrick Flynn was going for in this approximately 1,800-square-foot 1920 home in Minneapolis, MN. “The city has tons of Scandinavian culture and influence, and I wanted that to be part of the design,” says Brian. Which meant clean-lined furniture (classic Scandi style); serene, light-wood floors; and lots of snuggly fabrics for hygge—Danish for a cozy vibe. As Brian says, “Everything feels as good as it looks.” Come on in!

OFFICE White paint revived the chimney’s old red brick. The driftwood-y desk from Overstock may be for work, but faux-fur chairs by Inspired Home and a pink patchworkstyle rug are all play.
The large handwoven tapestry complements the tall windows and adds bonus hygge.
for the win! LIVING ROOM Brian chose black and white for chicness, and soft textures—a tweedy sectional by Carson Carrington, a sheepskin armchair from Overstock, a wool-blend rug by Capel—“so the room is super-welcoming.”

Surprise! Black-stained oak doors hide the fridge.
Even the lamp (from Overstock) has Scandi style.
MASTER BEDROOM “When you look out the windows, all you see are leaves,” says Brian. For a grown-up treehouse effect, Brian painted the walls sky blue and put in casual-cool pieces: a low upholstered bed and carved-front wood nightstands (all from Overstock).
KITCHEN It’s ultra sleek, but natural materials keep it down to earth—hello, twotoned oak cabinets and black granite counters. The island’s open cubbies are a sweet spot for storing cookbooks, vases, baskets, and more.

Decorate with Natural Light from Above. Creating Focal Points with Skylights
Museums use natural light from skylights to put the world’s greatest works of art under the best light. Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn borrowed from this tradition in the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2019, using VELUX skylights to create dynamic focal points in four rooms in the home. Here’s how daylight inspired his designs.
1
Combine light and color In the master bedroom, Flynn paints the room — trim, walls, ceiling — sky blue, creating a clean canvas for the eye. Natural light becomes a hero element of this design with two skylights that spill natural light down the wall and highlight artwork over the bed.
Showcase materials In the guest bathroom, the architect placed a VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight at the edge of the room to illuminate marble tile in the shower’s walls and ceiling. And airflow from the open skylight keeps the bathroom fresh and dry.
2
3
Create art with natural light In the master bathroom, natural light from the skylight becomes wall art. A blue light-filtering blind provides light control and a subtle pop of color to this otherwise neutral room.
Light art like museums do Flynn transforms the stairwell into an art gallery with large, framed artwork on two walls and brightens the passageway with natural light from skylights.

Abstract watercolor-y prints from Minted reflect the room’s pinks and blues.
chandelier The old black multiarmed chandelier? Not exactly hip. But these multihued globes? Heck yes. The fixture (from West Elm) has brass accents that playfully echo the legs of the new dining table and the étagère by Abbyson.
rug The room’s original brown 1990s-esque rug dragged it down; one with soft greens, blues, and pinks looks snappy, and the geometric pattern, trendy (it’s by Justina Blakeney X Loloi). There’s a bonus benefit: “The colors hide stains,” says Kelly, “which is necessary with a toddler!”

wallpaper The party’s up here! Pasteldotted paper from Flat Vernacular is a fun focal point. “I don’t know anyone else with a wallpapered ceiling,” says Kelly. “It makes our dining room feel special.”
wall color Blue Heron by Benjamin Moore Kelly and Patrick with Easton, 20 months, in their new dinner HQ
A
fter five years of apartment living, Kelly and Patrick Hilden were thrilled to find a cute 1930s three-bedroom house in Bloomfield, NJ. There was a lot to love—like the original floors and crown molding, and sizable rooms—but it required TLC throughout, especially the dining room. “Every single bit of trim was stained wood, and that needed updating,” says Kelly. Also begging for a kick: the bare white walls and dated light fixture, not to mention the couple’s country cottage–y table set (a leftover from their rental days that could only seat four). Together it all felt past its prime—a bummer for Kelly and Patrick, whose ideal Friday night involves hosting dinner for friends. HGTV Magazine had the cure: Splash color on the walls and pattern on the ceiling, and paint the trim crisp white. Then slide in a more contemporary table and a mod mix of seating. Add a little art and brass accents and it’s all fresh vibes, all the time.

seating Pink velvet chairs by Safavieh and an upholstered bench from Wisteria are way more 2019 than wood and wicker seats. They also fit twice as many people as before, when Kelly and Patrick had to borrow chairs from friends for parties.
This space still has the charm that made us fall in love with the house, but now it’s cool charm. —Kelly

White trim (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) plus blue-gray Roman shades by Hunter Douglas: stylish!
cabinet and mirror Kelly inherited the glass-doored cabinet from her aunt—it was sturdy, but too formal for them. Painting it gray (Dorian Gray by Sherwin-Williams) and hanging a ruffly mirror (from Ballard Designs) above made it modern.
table The old one was better suited for an eat-in kitchen. This 6-foot-long stunner with a live-edge wood top is much more fitting and inviting. “I worried it would look crowded, but the bigger table actually makes the room seem bigger too,” says Kelly.

ith a love for patterns and shapes that toes the fine line between colorful and chaotic, Brittany Jepsen created the magic that is found within The House That Lars Built. But to keep herself from falling into complete artistic anarchy this holiday season, a partnership with Command® Adjustables™, a new line of temporary, lightweight damage-free products, was a must. With fall-inspired garlands to be hung and chairs to be decked out in favorite Thanksgiving phrases, Command® Adjustables™ allowed every decoration, from tinsel to turkey (paper turkey, that is) to be readjusted up to 3 times in the first 20 minutes to ensure it was placed just right. If the can is completely empty, without a hiss of air, it’s perfectly fine to throw it away (some towns even let you use the recycling bin). “But if there are any contents left inside, that can create problems,” says Bob Cappadona, president and chief operating officer at environmental services company Veolia North America. Paint contains oil-derived petroleum. A can that gets broken during the jostling of trash collection may lead to leakage, which can seep into groundwater when it reaches the dump. Plus if the can is dented or punctured in the disposal process, the residual pressure might turn it into a projectile and injure a sanitation worker. Household hazardous waste programs— check your town’s website for info—know how to handle spraypaint cans safely, and often find ways to recycle or reuse the materials.

how bad is it to buy and return clothes from the same online retailer over and over? Companies don’t love it, but ordering 10 items, returning nine, then doing the same repeatedly isn’t a big issue—though it can have its costs. “In today’s competitive shopping environment, e-tailers know they need a flexible, convenient returns process to earn shopper loyalty,” says Tony Sciarrotta, executive director of Reverse Logistics Association, a trade group for the returns business. Even if a company pays for return shipping, as well as the cost of having staffers examine and restock items, it can still stand to make a profit. And there’s a chance, with tight return windows, that customers get your carbon footprint and reduce packaging and transit, consolidate orders and bring rejects to a local store if possible.

how bad is it to trim your dog’s nails yourself? Armed with the right techniques and a positive attitude, you can totally do this at home, assuming your pet complies, says Hyunmin Kim, D.V.M., the ASPCA veterinary staff manager of community medicine. To start, your dog should be lying down. With pet nail clippers in hand, sit beside him and hold each toe firmly. Cut from the top, not the side (which can cause the nail to splinter), trimming in slivers and following the curve of the nail with each pass. Stop once you see a white circle—that’s the live part, and cutting it will cause pain and bleeding. “Before trimming, it’s a good idea to tire out your pet with a brisk walk or tug-of-war game so they’re more likely to lie still,” Dr. Kim says. Pile on praise and treats. No matter how patient you are, some pups will be restless or fearful. In that case, head to a groomer or a vet.

how bad is it to keep opening your oven to check on the turkey? Repeated dips in heat from cracking open the oven door actually won’t affect how juicy and tender your bird is, says Keith Sarasin, author of The Perfect Turkey. (Neither will basting, FYI, so you can skip it.) Just know that temp drops will add a bit to the cooking time, which is already about 15 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey. What you see doesn’t tell you that much anyway. The only indicator of doneness is the internal temperature—a turkey’s good to go when the breast hits 165˚F. Stick in a thermometer that connects to an external monitor and you can easily peek as often as you want. “The real fatal mistake when making turkey is trying to cook it faster by upping the temperature,” says Sarasin. “It will end up
how bad is it to never have your tires rotated?

Sorry, this isn’t optional. “When you don’t rotate tires, two will wear out faster, compromising the stability of your vehicle,” says David Bennett, manager of automotive repair systems at AAA. Which pair get the brunt of the wear depends on whether your car is front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive—that indicates which ones are doing the extra work. As their treads get run down, it takes longer for the car to stop, especially in rain or snow. Switching tires around helps delay this deterioration. Do it once every other oil change, or at least before winter. Check with the place where you bought them before shelling out for service: Some tires’ purchase price includes rotation and balancing for their lifetime.

outdoor lights Here’s an easy, safe way to clear dirt and bugs out of ones with open bottoms, courtesy of Charles Relph, owner of C & C Window Cleaning in San Diego, CA. With the light off, unscrew the bulbs, de-gunk them with foaming glass cleaner, and set aside. “If the lights face up, stick rubber-chair leg tips from a hardware store over the socket for protection from wetness,” he says. Spray the foam cleaner on the inside and outside panes, brush with a handled dish scrubber, rinse with a water-filled spray bottle, and let dry. If the sockets face down and you can’t cap them, apply cleaner to the scrubber and work around them.

giant houseplant A plant with big leaves may be Insta-worthy, but it sure can get dusty. Erin Marino of online garden center The Sill, a devoted mom to more than 50 houseplants, advises cupping each leaf in your hand and wiping it down with a soft damp cloth using room-temperature water (too cold and it can shock the plant and stunt growth). For touch-ups, hit the leaves with a Swiffer duster.

Your secret weapon for the hand-wash-only kind: “Get a bottle brush with a narrow head that’ll fit through the neck, so you can scrub all around the inside to dislodge germs,” says Elaine Larson, R.N., an infectious disease expert at the Columbia University School of Nursing. “Use water as hot as your hands can take and a couple of drops of dish soap, and rinse thoroughly.” Larson advises dumping out residual H2O between uses: “If there’s always water in the bottle, an invisible film can form where bacteria can grow.”

shower grout Bleach is not the answer—it can break down grout over time, says Becky Rapinchuk, founder of the blog Clean Mama. Instead, zap spots with hydrogen peroxide. Get the kind in a spray bottle or add a sprayer to a bottle you already have. “It’s a safe, odorless spot cleaner with whitening power,” says Rapinchuk. Apply, let sit for 15 to 30 minutes, scrub with a grout brush, and rinse with water in a cup. Prevent mildew by spritzing with a shower cleaner once a week (or as often as you remember to).
leather boots Treat salt stains on leather as quickly as possible with distilled white vinegar and a new toothbrush, says Robert Santana, cofounder of Santana Leather Care, which has locations in four U.S. cities. Pour some vinegar into a glass, dip in the toothbrush, and go over the salt spots until they disappear. Since salt saps moisture from leather, causing cracks, it’s a good idea to apply leather lotion once the boots have fully dried; Santana recommends one with beeswax. To get rid of dirt from standard wear and tear, mix unscented, alcohol-free hand soap with water so it’s sudsy. Dip in a cotton cloth, wring until it’s almost dry, and wipe away.
phone screen Skip tissues or paper towels, which can leave residue. “Whether or not you have a screen protector, your best bet is an LCD screen cleaner,” says Best Buy’s Nick Karakatsoulis, a Geek Squad manager. The key is to squirt some on a microfiber cloth, not straight onto the phone, or you risk getting cleaner in the ports. Wipe in circles or long strokes and be careful around the edges of screen protectors to prevent peeling.
diamond ring To brings yours back to life, fill a dish with warm water and a drop or two of mild dish soap, says New York City– based jewelry designer Stephanie Gottlieb. Soak the ring for 10 to 20 minutes, go over it with a soft-bristled toothbrush or bottle brush, and rinse. While ammonia will add major shine, it can discolor the metal if done repeatedly, so don’t dunk a ring in it. Instead, dilute a splash of ammonia in a ramekin or a small bowl of water, dip in the brush, go over the diamond, rinse, and pat dry.

kitchen garbage pail “Every few times you change the bag, dump out crumbs and wipe the inside of the pail with allpurpose cleaner,” says Rapinchuk. Do the same on the outside, using a stainless steel cleaner if necessary. Got a lingering smell? Douse a cotton ball with a few drops of lemon essential oil and place in the bottom of the pail before putting in a new bag; toss the cotton the next time you take out the trash. Periodically hose down the pail outside and let it dry, or go at it in a utility sink.

dog’s paws For muddy situations, you need more than a damp towel. “Dawn dishwashing liquid is my go-to—it’s gentle and works great,” says Haley Burke, D.V.M., a vet at Alford Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Birmingham, AL. “Johnson’s Baby Shampoo is another good choice. I’ve never known either to trigger an allergic reaction.” Wet a washcloth with warm water, suds it up, and rub gently on top of the paw and around the pad, too. Get in between the toes, where dirt can cake up. Rinse well by wiping the paws again with a wet cloth, then pat dry. “Since most dogs will lose patience by this point, do the best you can to pat the paws and toe area dry with a clean towel, and let air take care of the rest,” says Dr. Burke.
sofa cushions Doing a quick once-over with the vacuum is better than nothing, but once in a while give your cushions the royal treatment. Lay them out on a blanket on the floor, says Melissa Maker, author of Clean My Space. Stabilize the cushion with one hand and move the upholstery brush attachment over it, starting in the top corner with what Maker calls
down, up strokes slightly angled. “This ensures the best coverage,” she says. Vacuum the front, rear, and sides. Clean the sofa’s foundation with the upholstery attachment, and stick a hand into the crevices to remove Lego pieces or the remote control you thought was gone forever, then do a pass with the crevice tool. If there are odors, blast
glass oven door For sauce or grease that’s spilled onto the outside of the door, spray with distilled white vinegar. “It’s a natural and effective cleaner,” says Melissa Witulski, a manager for Merry Maids. Wipe with a microfiber cloth and buff out streaks with a dry one. For inside the door, combine ½ cup of baking soda and enough water to make a paste. Remove loose bits of crud with a damp cloth, then spread the paste on the window. Let sit for 15 minutes and wipe away with a damp microfiber cloth.

baseboard moldings Dragging a wet mop along grimy baseboards will leave you with sticky streaks (as you may well know). First, clear dust with a broom or duster. If there’s dirt remaining, says Maker, swipe it away with a microfiber cloth and a spritz of cleaner—blend a half teaspoon of dish soap diluted in 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Wipe off excess moisture with a dry cloth so new dust bunnies can’t stick.

here comes a time in many homeowners’ lives when they realize a reno is in their future. For Cristina Poscablo-Stein and James Stein, the momentum started during their daughter’s first birthday party in their Atlanta, GA, home. “I’d set up a spread in the dining room, but everyone congregated in our kitchen— the last place I wanted people to see,” says Cristina. The area was closed off and, like the rest of the house, not as efficiently laid out as it could be. As they considered what to do, she says, “the list of things we wanted to make us love our house kept growing!” Two years ago the pair embarked on a remodel of the 1920s Craftsman. With help from designers Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning, they opened up the layout and brought house fantasies, including a music room and a back porch, to life. The result is full of fun flair, along with plenty of room to spread out…only they still have the reno bug. Maybe a garage? A pool? As Cristina says, “Our wish list has been fulfilled…for now.”

irst rule for new homeowners: If your parents ask if you want some old furniture, say yes! While you might have to politely decline that overstuffed couch from their rec room, sometimes you get treasures. Designer Amy Sklar and her husband Randy, a comedian, inherited more than a few parental gems after they bought their place in Los Angeles—ideal since Amy wanted a look that reflected the house’s 83-year-old bones. “A lot of the original features were still intact, like the floors, molding, and doors,” she says. “I loved that it didn’t feel blurred out.” She supplemented the pieces she got from her family with old-school goodies from area thrift stores, then paired them with contemporary picks. Neutral colors and natural wood help everything mesh. “There’s history here, but you never feel that this house takes itself too seriously,” says Amy. “It feels so good to see bits from my childhood around me. I hope one day when my kids have houses, I’ll get to do the same for them.”
living room Can you spot the vintage piece? No, it’s not the perfectly faded rug (that’s from Living Spaces) or the cowhide ottoman (Room & Board). The leather and wood safari chair from the ’60s is the real deal. Amy matched its mid-century style with a sectional from Lawson-Fenning.

star scoop ver the past 10 years, JD Scott’s Las Vegas home has gotten its fair share of jokey comments from his younger brothers, HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott. “They made fun of various home projects that took me a while to finish, but I wasn’t using a full crew like some people I know,” says JD, who’s a TV personality himself. After his fiancée, Annalee Belle, moved in during the summer of 2015, it made sense to give the home an update, except the couple was never able to fit it into their schedules. “It was going to be a big commitment, and we both travel a lot for work,” says Annalee, a makeup artist and model. Home-pro siblings for the win! Drew and Jonathan had to contend with very different style preferences: “We call JD’s taste manimalistic because he’s into darker tones, whereas Annalee refers to her aesthetic as ‘rainbow bubble gum,’ ” says Drew. Of course, Jonathan and Drew managed to give the couple a perfectly blended design. They filmed the transformation for their show Property Brothers: Forever Home. “We couldn’t be happier,” says JD. “And I’m not just saying that because they’re family!”
Raise the roof: The living room ceiling went from 8 feet to almost 10 feet high.
The front door opens to the living room, so to make a big impact, Jonathan and Drew did a wall of faux brick painted Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams. Jewel tones in the furniture and the rug from eCarpetGallery satisfied Annalee’s love of color.
Pre-reno, JD and Annalee’s dining area was all substance (tons of cabinets) but not much style. Their new space has hits of glam from the brushed-gold-based table by Tov Furniture, velvet chairs by Scott Living, and a light fixture with metallic accents by Kichler. “I love how the art contrasts with the dark walls,” says Annalee. “This is the first time I’ve seen JD like something that’s floral!” It’s by Wendover Art Group.

JD had always wanted a second bathroom, so Jonathan and Drew converted unused space into one. They knocked it out of the park with cool tile—glossy dark blue in the shower and pebble mosaic on the floor (both by Walker Zanger).
“Finally landscaping the front yard was important for our neighbors’ sake,” says JD, laughing. The home’s curb appeal boosts include new turf, a white picket fence, a new green front door, and a fresh paint job on the exterior—Bay Water by Behr on the house and Isle of Pines by SherwinWilliams on the garage door.

why is it called a colonial, anyway? When British colonists settled along the East Coast in the 1700s, they copied a popular house style from back home called Georgian (after King Georges I to III). It had a boxy shape, symmetrical windows,
and a central door. The style came to be known as Colonial, referring to its era. In the 1900s it made a comeback as a Colonial Revival— same shape, with new features like porticos and dormers that were,
by then, cheaper and easier to put in. Other kinds of Colonials exist, including Dutch and Spanish, but Georgianinspired Revivals remain a common pick for new builds—nobody gets tired of a classic!

Using a few shades of the same color, like green, makes a kitchen more interesting. —Sean
w
hen people renovate their kitchen, they tend to pin down which color to paint their cabinetry, then move on to the next decision as quickly and painlessly as possible. Not Sean Lewis and Geoffrey O’Donnell, who chose to stain some of the cabinets and paint others in their 1920 Philadelphia home—complicating things in a good way. “I thought it would be fun to experiment,” says Sean, a kitchen designer. And he didn’t stop there. The space, which had last been redone in orangey wood sometime in the ’80s, now has three kinds of countertops (soapstone, marble, and wood on the hutch), two types of cabinet door hardware, and an overall style that walks the line between timeless and totally fresh. “The different textures and colors create a rich and unique look, even without any patterns,” says Sean. “I can’t imagine us ever growing tired of it.”

“I may have unintentionally designed the kitchen around our dog, Nash,” says Sean (left). “With his black fur and big brown eyes, he looks great in here!”

island and center cabinets are cherrywood, while the others are painted. Sean built a shelf (also cherry) that spans both windows and refurbished a Craigslist hutch for storage with a creative twist.
cabinets (Jade Romanesque), sage trim (Lewiville Green), and moss green flooring are variations of an earthy hue. A pop of warm yellow (Golden Bounty, all paints by Benjamin Moore) feels like it belongs in the same family.

5. Punch down the dough. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead until it comes together. Roll into a 9-inch-by-12-inch rectangle. Spread with the room-temperature butter and sprinkle with the cinnamonsugar mixture. Starting from the long side, roll the dough into a tight log, pinching the seam to seal. Cut into twelve 1-inch-thick rolls and transfer cut side up to the prepared pan. Cover and let rise until the rolls are touching, about 20 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 375°F. Bake the rolls until puffed and lightly golden brown, 25 to 27 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of cooking, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and orange juice; stir in zest. Drizzle over the cinnamon rolls.
