Athletics is a traditional olympic sport.

It is also called “Track and field athletics” and it has many different events.  They are divided in: a) Running and racewalking events:These include all races from sprints to the Marathon. (Steeplechase and hurdle races too). b) Throwing Events:Javelin, Shotput, Hammer and Discus are the four throwing events. c) Jumping Events:Long Jump. Triple Jump, High Jump and Pole Vault are the four types of jumps. d) Multiple Event Competitions:These include the heptatlon for women and the decathlon for men.

2) Middle Distance Events: are events longer than sprints and up to 3000 metres.-800 metres-1500 metres3000 metres steeplechase

3) Long Distance Events: are events over: -3000 metres. -5000 metres -10000 metres -Marathon (outside the stadium but finishing in it: 42km and 195m)

4) Relay races: are events in which four athletes participate as a team, passing a metal baton in between. Events commonly contested are:-4x100m relay-4x400m relayHere you have the 4x100m world

JAVELIN THROW: in wich you throw a spear after running some metres, finishing with cross-steps, to a pretetermmined area http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5wdaSwVeTo&feature=player_embedded

SHOT PUT: in which you throw a heavy metal ball as far as possible. You can choose between trhow with turns or not, always form a circle zone. The ball´s height is 7 kg for men and 4 kg for women, aprox. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ5gL8avcOo&feature=player_embedded


HIGH JUMP: in wich you have to jump over a horizontal bar placed and mesured with an especific heights, trying not contacy with the bar. Javier Sotomayoy is the current men´s record holder (2.45 m) Ruth Beitia is the best Spanish jumper, born in Santander and fifth in the last Olimpics games in Beijing POLE VAULT: is the only event in which you have to use something to jump, a long flexible pole to jump over a bar. LONG JUMP: is a discipline in which you jump as far as possible, after running quickly, trying not to step on the line. The word record is 8.95 m. TRIPLE JUMP: in wich you have to do 3 jumps, to fall as far as possible too.


Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all events. Performance is judged on a points system in each event. Every event has a score table for all possible results. The winner is the one whose combined scores are the highest.

Women do the Heptathlon, which includes the following seven events:
