motel +mixed use university of melbourne
The Bachelor Capstone Studio brief called for a motel which simultaenously houses a HQ for three different Dispersed Interest Groups (DSIG) namely; Mindfulness+Yoga Association Australian Shepherd Association National Association for Visual Arts Tailored to instill calmness and a presence of solidity, the building is characterized to resemble a cave with faceted facade and its mass cracks at mid level. The first intention aimed to split the private and public domains and the second intention was to increase the surface area for vertical greening. The crevices allowed natural light to pass through and the opportunity to slit vines of green on vertical surfaces. Aspiring to increase the amount of green within its 25x25m footprint, the scheme took to greening by floor plates. The initiative compensated 1.5 floor of greening. While accomodating the daily operation of a 3 star motel, the building provides shared facilities for the DSIGs to hold conferences and events. These spaces include a multi-functional hall, a restaurant and a bar lounge. The motel rooms were also geared towards compact design to minimize ‘dead objects’ and increase ‘live spaces’.

In tandem with the variety of users within the brief, the scheme believes that the typology and usage of motel rooms should be flexible and accomodating to their activities. Rooms are complemented with greenery to make a space feel larger that it is enclosed and fresher.

parametric architecture
university of melbourne
Main Idea Sparked by the idea of the site being an island, this parametrically driven art installation introduces a water based experience in its relationship to the surrounding. It is imagined to be a water sculpture and the metaphor behind this gesture aims to raise environmental awareness within the industrial community. The Act Water is pumped up from the surrounding sea and falls into a reflective pool within the site, delivering a soft and contemplative experience in contrast to the industrial area that it sits on. The water is then rightfully returned to the sea and the cycle repeats, enabling a functional water sculpture as along as it is exhibited. A Metaphor As city dwellers, it is easy to acquire services and we forget the value of resources. The gesture of a huge amount of water falling from great height carries a metaphor of water wastage and leads to the reflection of our very own water usage impacting the greater environment. This is highlighted by the vastness of the site itself.

Rather than being visualized as an end product right from the start, different elements are added, subtracted, multiplied and divided along the way very much like a formula of systems. Here, parametric technology is made used to deal with accuracy of the points which the computer generated. The value added by the designer rests on manipulation of these computer generated materials to create complex forms which the brief and the designer pushes for. Apart from the exterior aesthetic, technology is also made used to visualise the potential of the structure inside which more than often helps to determine type of materiality of the prototype.

construction design
university of melbourne
This exercise articulates and tests the idea of construction as a process requiring cultural and technical choices. Construction Design examines the analysis of specific architectural ideas to arrive at the evaluation and selection of implementation alternatives. Deconstructing the case study at both 1:20 physical model and axonometric drawing trains the skill of putting things together as in the matter of actual construction through reference, analysis, memory and of course imagination in engaging with the technological underpinnings of architecture. The terminus of the subject was to go through a graded Q&A by the actual project team from MCR Architects and ProBuild Australia.

Competition for Sports Centre in National University of Singapore Result - 1st Place NUS Sports Centre is envisioned within a masterplan with improved connectivity set in a lush landscape in tandem with the university’s ideal. The pride in NUS long sporting tradition is also prominently celebrated in the curved architectural media screen in the west facade. Compact planning holds the key to efficient space planning as well as social-friendly spaces which is important to the university. Sustainable design is pursued through stack effect for natural ventilation, maximizing the usage of natural daylighting across the sporting venues. - Assisted in design development - Provided concept write up - Layout of presentation boards - Photoshop plans and images

Commissioned by Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore The design feautures a three storey atrium which will be home to pets’ outdoor events such as training and workshops. Wrapping the front elevantion are vibrant strips of aluminum louvers designed to accommodate a naturally ventilated aquaculture centre. In terms of space planning, there is a clear segregation of public and private access which is crucial in a teaching facility. The challenge for this laboratory certified building progressed with vigorous coordination between different consultants and specialists to achieve an accreddited standard. - Developed space planning - Tender and construction drawings - Furniture and lab specifications Š forum architects

House for a writer and her family. As Eckhart Tolle puts it, “All you really need to do is to accept this moment fully. You are then at ease in the here and now and at ease with yourself. The scheme wants to provide a comfort zone for a writer, a place where she could move about and write as and when thoughts strucks her, a place where her family have fun, a place of ease. The notion of transition splits the massing into three blocks containing the main living area, the connecting pavilion and a solitary cube. Each cube maintains a white facade with timber interior to subtly lends itself to the outdoor through cutouts of windows and skylights. Nestled within the backyard full of trees, the connecting pavilion blends in with its timber texture and provides a space of escape.
