HAMBURG SCORES POINTS FOR SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

Container handling in the Port of Hamburg remained steady in the first half of 2024, with 3.8 million TEU processed, reflecting a stable trend in both transhipment and continental traffic. The impact of the energy transition is becoming increasingly evident, particularly with the decline in coal volumes, which has contributed to a decrease in bulk cargo throughput. The port handled a total of 55.9 million tonnes of seaborne cargo during this period. However, there was notable growth in both the number of container ship calls and the share of rail transport in seaport hinterland traffic.

Increase in Loaded Container Handling

Despite challenges in the Red Sea region and moderate economic performance in Germany, container handling stayed consistent. From January to June 2024, the Port of Hamburg processed 3.8 million TEU, maintaining a nearly unchanged level compared to the first half of last year (-0.3 percent).

Loaded container volumes showed a slight increase of 0.5 percent, reaching 3.4 million TEU. The handling of conventional general cargo also posted positive results, increasing by 4.3 percent to 585,000 tonnes. Overall, general cargo throughput remained stable at 39.2 million tonnes (+/- 0.0 percent).

Total seaborne cargo throughput in the first half of the year amounted to 55.9 million tonnes, a 3.9 percent decrease year-on-year. The impact of the energy transition is becoming increasingly evident in bulk cargo handling, particularly with the decline in coal volumes.

“We can see the trend towards decarbonization in the bulk cargo figures, reflecting a shift away from fossil fuels towards alternative energy sources. This is particularly noticeable in the 11.8 percent drop in coal handling over the past six months,” explained Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

This decline also affected overall bulk cargo throughput, which decreased by 12.1 percent to 16.7 million tonnes.

Diverging Market Trends

When comparing the top ten trading partners, Malaysia stands out for the first six months of 2024. The cargo volume with the country increased by 14.7 percent to 88,000 TEU, placing it in tenth position. U.S. trade also continued its upward trajectory, with 341,000 TEU handled – a 9.0 percent increase – solidifying the U.S. as Hamburg’s secondlargest trading partner. China maintained its top position, with a total of 1.1 million TEU (-2.2 percent). Turkey continued its positive trend from the past four years, with a 26.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year. It now ranks twelfth in Hamburg’s trade volume, having moved up six places in the first half of the year.

Increase in Vessel Calls

The number of ships with container capacity calling at the Port of Hamburg increased slightly in the first half of 2024, reflecting an uptick of nearly one percent. This growth was primarily driven by mediumsized and smaller vessels, as calls by large container ships with over 10,000 TEU capacity declined across all size classes compared to the same period last year. This trend reflects the impact of the ongoing crisis in the Red Sea, where disruptions caused by Houthi rebels

have led shipping companies to choose the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope. This detour extends sailing times to and from Asia by up to 15 days and has prompted adjustments in liner services. On the positive side, additional liner services are now calling at Hamburg.

More Sustainability in Transport

The provision of shore power for container, cruise, and inland waterway vessels in the Port of Hamburg is gaining momentum. In recent months, additional facilities have been brought in operation.

“Hamburg is a European pioneer of shore power adoption, now extending this capability to container vessels in addition to cruise and inland waterway ships,” said Mattern.

An increasing number of shippers are choosing rail as a sustainable mode of transport in hinterland traffic, which has further solidified the railways’ leading role in Hamburg’s seaporthinterland operations. Despite challenges from line closures and extensive construction work, rail’s share of TEU rose to 50.8 percent in the first half of the year, with 1.3 million TEU handled, representing a 3.1 percent increase. In terms of tonnage, rail transport’s share grew by 1.2 percent, reaching 23.4 million tonnes.

ALL SEGMENTS OF LOGISTICS ARE WAITING FOR LOGITRANS EXHIBITION

The transportation sector and commercial vehicles, which are held responsible for a significant portion of emissions, are making efforts to both respond immediately to disruptions in the global supply chain and combat the climate crisis. Not only ships, planes, trucks, and trailers, but also warehouses, ports, and other handling areas are under scrutiny during the pollution process. logitrans Exhibition is a place where sectors that must maintain supply chain continuity can project into the future-providing logistics services that are both efficient enough to meet the demands and needs of the industry and sensitive enough to respond to social expectations.

Ekin Seren Ünsaç shared the following information: “logitrans Exhibition, which holds the pulse of the logistics world, is counting down the days. The 47th week of the year, during which the fair will be open from November 20-22, practically becomes Turkey’s logistics week. Participants

and visitors from dozens of countries not only experience the three-day fair environment but also attend numerous meetings in Turkey’s leading industrial cities during the remaining days. They tour factories and organized industrial zones, conduct facility inspections, and sign agreements. It wouldn’t be wrong to say it’s the busiest week for the sector. I would like to remind all components of the sector to adjust their business schedules accordingly, taking future demands into account.”

International Logitrans Transport Logistics Exhibition

The “International logitrans Transport Logistics Exhibition” will be held for the 17th time between November 20-22, 2024, at the Kadir Topbas Show and Art Center, organized by EKO MMI Fuarcilik Ltd. Sti. logitrans, which serves as an excellent bridge between Europe and the Near East, offers a wide range of products and services covering the entire value chain of logistics, telematics, and transportation.

Loss due to theft is among the top three causes of claims received on an annual basis by the international freight and logistics insurance specialist, TT Club. Identification of trends, spikes and hot spots surrounding this aspect of supply chain crime is a primary function of the insurer, as is the issuing of guidance to help mitigate such losses. In the latest of its ongoing series of Security Bulletins, TT focusses on the crucial importance of the container seal, as a fundamental tool in assuring the integrity of global cargo transportation.

Despite the existence of a wide range of security seal types, from basic plastic clips through to the frequently used bolt seals, and now sophisticated digital options, many in the supply chain are ignoring their benefits in maintaining cargo integrity and promptly identifying theft.

Thieves have devised complex strategies, as well as traditional bolt cutters, to access a container’s cargo undetected. These include recruiting insiders and manipulating seal numbers, either manually or using 3D printing so almost identical seals can be affixed once the cargo is stolen.

“Whatever sealing regime is employed its effectiveness crucially depends on how the process is managed,” emphasises TT’s Logistics Risk Manager, Josh Finch. “It is important for supply chain managers to be aware of the limitations of the various seal designs but also appreciate that whatever seal type is employed, their efficacy hinges on whether the information from the seal is accurately checked. A security culture must pervade operations at both loading and unloading points, as well as other key handling locations.”

Often personnel at the receiving warehouse view the seal as a nuisance, something that needs to be cut from the doors prior to them opening the container and unpacking it. However, identifying any tampering with the seal can be vital insofar as liability is concerned, helping to pinpoint exactly how the theft occurred, who was involved and where goods were damaged or stolen. “Moreover such knowledge clearly acts as guidance in taking steps to avoid future incidents,” comments Finch.

A vital consideration in expanding the use of seals is that almost all are currently either single-use or have an element that is plastic. Clearly, promoting their widespread usage involves consideration of sustainability, especially as the industry focusses increasingly on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Speaking of this limitation, Finch comments “While there are clearly environmental concerns with many container seal solutions, we cannot ignore the societal implications of allowing cargo theft to thrive in the industry. TT sees innovation in all areas of the transport and logistics industry, and we see great potential in digital seals that increasingly appear on the market.”

Gathered together in this Security Bulletin is TT’s own loss prevention advice together with collaborative work undertaken with other like-minded organisations in this space. From basic descriptions of seal specification, performance characteristics and benefits to new e-seal and tracking technology, and from details of criminals methodologies to guidance on best practice to combat theft, the Bulletin outlines the crucial role seals should play in operators’ security processes and culture.
