The dynamics of Products, Productivity and Payments are dramatically changing. Can you see the shift? Brace yourself for a time when productivity will be treated as important as production and sound payment behaviour will determine profits. What are the steps you are taking to understand change, adopt change and implement change in our system and processes?

Post pandemic phase, the Indian wood panel industry is taking leaps in many directions, which will show far reaching effects in the coming years. As I mentioned during various Ply Reporter’s online sessions, “The decade 2021-30 starting from 20202 will be remembered as revolutionary for the wood panel industry.” The year 2022 will mark new dynamics for industry, trade and especially wholesalers. The dynamics of Products, Productivity and Payments are dramatically changing. Can you see the shift? What are the steps you are taking to understand change, adopt change and implement change in our system and processes? The approach towards buying and selling interior materials is changing. The conventional products will transform according to new needs. For example, ‘Moving towards Calibrated ply from general plywood’, ‘HM+HD grade MDF from general MDF’, ‘High clarity/high definition + consistent quality laminate from average quality mica,’ ‘higher density +better quality WPC instead of general low density PVC boards’ etc. The transition from lower grade to higher quality and consistency will be gaining speed from here on. The terms like ‘Fali plywood’ may not be stressed upon. I can see the rise in acceptance of high quality products. The new quality trends will impact Production volumes thus productivity and efficiency will be the need for survival. Productivity cannot be achieved without efficiency and manufacturers will learn this lesson. Shrinking margins coupled with stricter government compliances will make way only for well guided + smart industrial units where productivity will be equally important as production. Time & technology will be used for Efficiency. Efficient Products and Productivity can be achieved if the payment cycle is in line hence the payment discipline will be more important than ever. The efficiency of money rotation is vital to make any business profitable and sustainable. Wood panel industry is riddled with payment irregularities and quality disputes which is fast changing after covid phase. Healthy Payment behaviour of a party is straightaway fetching him better profits now. Earlier, prices based on payment was a window, open for only big players, but 2021 onwards the option looks open for all. Any buyer whether is having small quantity or big can realise the discount based on his payment behaviour. Payment behaviour will be one of the significant defining factors for the growth of any business. I can foresee that organised work culture is accelerating in wood panel trade. This decade will be certainly the turning point towards organised work culture. Stay SAFE, Stay CLEAR, Happy NEW YEAR!

OPENING OF WOOD BASED INDUSTRY LICENCE: YES OR NO!

APNI BAAT

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

30

The best part is to look forward instead of waiting for the help from the government. Gossiping related to opening of new licences, right or wrong is a different thing! But, creating good coordination with farmers, nurseries, and the government is a win-win situation for all.

A group of Plywood Manufacturers is against new wood-based licenses because they believe that if new industries will come up, there will be timber shortage and also they will be unable to sell materials. The basis of data for timber availability considered by the government agencies is being doubted by them, and hence they stress upon not issuing of new licence. Another group of industry people advocate and demand for a new licence of woodbased industries. They also speak about Indian Farmers, with a reason that if new industries come up, the farmers will be benefited. They reason that there is no need for a licensing process due for the wood based industry using plantation timber for making wood products. In these two sides, the industry people are divided. Whether licenses are being opened by state governments and respective authorities or not! It’s upon the policy makers but one thing is clear that the farmers will plant more if they see higher demand and good returns. And, for that wood panel industries have to create good examples by distributing saplings, educating farmers and bringing everyone to a common agenda to develop agro-forestry ecosystem. Rest all is just discussion and time taking activities. Important thing to do is, spread the awareness for plantation drive, find nurseries and barren land, and contribute to expanding the plantation drive backed up with soil test and colonel research. The best part is to look forward instead of waiting for the help from the government. Gossiping related to opening of new licences, right or wrong is a different thing! But, creating good coordination with farmers, nurseries, and the government is a win-win situation for all. There is a bright future for Plywood, if the production will be double from now, but focusing on good quality products manufacturing, working on utilisation of machines, men and resources around you will definitely help the industry a lot. So, adopt organise work culture, and focus on team and brand. This issue has featured ‘7 predictions of Year 2022’, which is like a ‘Capsule Dose’ for your business plan this year. Read it, and reserve the information for your benefits. Many news reports, announcements, and the launching of new products have also been published. Talk with Mr. Rajesh Shah, CMD of Eurobond ACP - a first stock listed Indian ACP brand, and Mr. Vishal Dokania of Durian laminate in the laminate sector are worth reading. The new products launched from Trenox Laminates, Advance laminates, Nocte Veneers have also been covered. Covid 3rd wave has arrived, be safe.

Happy New Year 2022,

PREDICTION - 1

TIMBER TO TOUCH PEAK IN 2022

NEWS WATCH

fVEcj dh dhersa 2022 esa vius f'k[kj ij gksxh

he wood panel industry is set to witness the peak in timber prices in 2022. The scenario is going to emerge when a manufacturer will evaluate the cost of timber used per square feet with respect to yield and the girth of the log. The timber availability will be highly squeezed and wood-based industries will be forced to purchase logs of poplar and eucalyptus of lower girth on higher rates. The scenario will reflect throughout the country this year irrespective of species.

The poplar prices are expected to cross 1150 mark this year whereas Eucalyptus is expected to hover around Rs 750/tonne levels for high quality timbers. The prices in Kerala for rubber wood are also expected to remain on similar levels. In the East, the timber supply will also tighten because demand for timber is growing with each passing day.

The arrival of new wood-based industries in Punjab, Haryana and expansions happening in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand is certainly pushing towards higher imbalance that will be reflected in 2022 on its peak. The new capacities in MDF and particle board will certainly boost sentiment among plant growers thus sales in timber nurseries will also scale up to new heights in 2022.

But on the whole, the wood panels industries are set to witness the most acute timber shortage in 2022. The Ply Reporter foresees timber crisis hitting plywood industries at the most because the plywood market is not supporting the price increase in plywood category so far.

ACRYLIC BOARDS/ LAMINATES DEMAND WILL GROW

NEWS WATCH

he rise of quality products in interior of homes will increase the demand for health friendly and safe products. The next imminent boost expected in interior sector is decorative Acrylic sheets or Acrylic boards. Year 2022, will see a rise in demand for decorative surfaces with highest clarity and health friendly characteristics where acrylic sheets are catching up at great speed. The products like Gloss Meister from merino and on the same lines products offered by Rehau, Stylam helped the Indian market to accept its need. It took time to understand the benefits and technical advantages and but year 2022 will mark its impact on Acrylic decorative sheets because the product will now start reaching to other cities and metros.

In the time to come, some of the PVC laminate market will give way to higher quality products of acrylic surfaces and year 2022 will be a beginning of this trend.

he worm affected mango wood coming from Bengal is creating problems for Jodhpur handicraft and furniture industry. According to media reports the foreign buyers have complained of insects in the mango wood. In such a situation there is an estimation that over 100 crores orders of the exporters can be affected. Industry people say that due to this carelessness of timber traders not only the exporters are suffering financial loss but the reputation of Jodhpur handicraft and furniture industry is also getting tarnished and they may have to face consequences in the coming time.

Dr. Bharat Dinesh, President, Jodhpur Handicraft Exporters Association said, “There is a problem of woodworm in the goods of Bengal as the timer of mango wood in Bengal is highly prone to wood-worm rather than UP and Gujarat mango wood. This is affecting our exports as well as the reputation of the industry. Because of this our orders have come down by half in the last six months and the exports have remained to 1000 containers now. The reason for such an issue is that proper chemical treatment of wood is not being done by a few timber traders. If this situation continues, then gradually our work will stop and the huge orders can be affected.”

“Although the exporters are alert, and they are holding such material before being exported to the party. The association has asked for the list of such timer traders so that proper action can be taken against them and the list can be circulated to the manufacturers and buyers,” he added. “The industry was picking up well after the situation of the pandemic came to relax across the globe but once again the cases are rising in Europe that has affected the orders,” he said.

According to the exporters, the timber of Bengal mango wood is bought by the timber merchants due to being cheaper than the mango wood of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Also the timber may not have been given proper chemical treatment that is why the problem of insects and borer is being seen. Timber traders should be highly responsible for proper chemical treatment of wood according to the parameters with drying and seasoning for its storage to avoid such incidents.

VERY SOON PEOPLE WILL REALIZE

THAT HANKY-PANKY BUSINESS CANNOT SUSTAIN, HENCE BE ORGANISED

INTERVIEW

Mr Vishal Dokania, Director, Durian Laminates, Cedar Decor Pvt. Ltd. was in conversation with Pragath Dvivedi on 05 December 2021 on Ply Reporter’s BRAND BUZZ. Ply Reporter's Brand Buzz is special episodes, a video content platform that gives an opportunity to brands for sharing their USP, new features, innovation, latest updates, and important messages to business channel partners and industry. Mr Vishal Dokaina is heading Cedar Decor Pvt Ltd in Durian Industries laminates vertical. Cedar Decor is Gujarat based largest laminate manufacturing company with pan 120 India distribution channels. They are also one with production of six lakh sheets per month. of the fastest growing laminate companies Here is a brief synopsis of the conversation. How has been your journey so far and how do you feel in this industry now? I have an interesting background and have lived in multiple cities in India and abroad. I was born in Kolkata, went to boarding school in Darjeeling and studied in the US for almost 9 years doing MBA and Computer Engineering. When I was finishing my MBA, my family members started a laminate plant in Ahmedabad, that really considering my entry in coming back and joining the family business. For me there was a jock in my family that “I turned from software to hardware.” What changes did you observe in the industry? The competition is very tough now! If we see the history of 15 to 17 years, the number of companies have increase many folds. When the competition increases the creativity and innovation also increase. The complacency do not work, so you have to have a very good connect to the industry right from local suppliers, international suppliers, manufacturing companies, departments, pollution, ground water, etc, so, with everything the compliance has increased. www.plyreporter.com

Now slowly the laws are being implemented effectively. In the frontend, to have a deeper connection with the customers (the dealers, distributors and end consumers) are much important because there are numerous companies competing against you. So, you have to on your toes for situational awareness. These are traits applicable to the entire industry fraternity as if at manufacturing level the competition has increased; similar is the situation at the distributors’ level. Now the consumers have more choice which is good for them. At the benefiting point the consumers as well as the manufactures both are winners because now with competition the manufacturers have to innovate more and the customers have more choice. How is the growth rate of Durian laminate and how do you see it in this changing times with competition? Sixteen years before we had one press and every two three years we installed a press. Today we have six presses with installed capacity of 6 lakh sheets. We are very close to achieve its full capacity. The growth has been very good and consistent that is also in an organic way.

THE DIRECTORS OF THE COMPANY IN CONVERSATION WITH THE PLY REPORTER How easy was taking the decision to venture into particle board and MDF manufacturing?

Mr Sanjiv Gupta: As you know that we have been manufacturing plywood with the brand ‘Unik’ for a long time. By being in this industry and with our experience, we observed that in coming times MDF and particle board would have good demand as India is a vast country with a growing economy. In a growing economy the growth rate of furniture demand remains very good and furniture making is easy on MDF and Particle Board. We were looking for expansion so with this thought ventured into particle board and MDF manufacturing. In 2015 we acquired 35 acre land and started to execute this plan. What is the meaning of the brand name “Trenox”?

Mr Sanjiv Gupta: Actually it is the mix of two words, ‘Tree’ and ‘No’. Our objective is to save trees to our level best. In particle board and MDF manufacturing, we use www.plyreporter.com

farming wood but not its trees. Its branches are used in making particle boards and MDF. In that way it is ecofriendly along with a source of income for farmers. So, in straightway Trenox means no cutting of trees.
