STABLE PRICING IS NEEDED TO LIFT UP THE SENTIMENTS Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

EDITORIAL

There is certainly a shift where carpentry is taking back seat and moduler and factory made set-up are being adopted. It is pushing way for furniture makers and consumers and retailer 26 have to understand the changing dynamics.

The base paper and timber prices are floating in higher brackets but prices of finished products have been steady. I can certainly say "The plywood Industry is facing the most difficult time with growing timber shortage throughout which is making manufacturers as well trade circles jittery. The problems are escalating for plywood and timber based panel industry with growing supply and demand gap. Currently Laminate sector has eased up because of fall in prices of Melamine and Kraft. There is a visible weakness in sentiments but market demand looks steady. Though slow movement, payment tightening are being witnessed on retail counters but aggressive retail points are happy even in this period. Things are moving in manner that poses no immediate concern. Since timber consumption has grown sharply post covid but supply has reduced, which is creating difficult time for small players. For organised players the situation is comparatively better as their margins are still way better than smaller companies. Like Malamine and Kraft, PVC resin prices have also corrected significantly causing a downward trend in finished goods prices. There is a correction of around Rs 30-35/kg during last 3 months. The recent downward trend has eased up the prices in PVC boards, edge band and PVC laminate category. The down ward pressure is expected to continue since China is exporting more after removal of anti dumping duty in Feb 22 and COVID in China has forced the producers to sell aggressively. In October 21, the PVC resin prices touched all time high to around Rs 170 which is now in range of Rs 105-110. The downward pressure on PVC prices is expected to continue in the near term as well. India remains one of the largest buyers of PVC resin in SE Asia region ex of China. All I see is the need to uplift the market Sentiments and what is in hands of industry and Trade is to make efforts for stability in Pricing and offering some comfort to consumers and users. On furniture Retail sector, our estimate reflects "Indian market is expanding at a rate of on an average 15-16% annually." There is certainly a shift where carpentry is taking back seat and moduler and factory made set-up are being adopted. It is pushing way for furniture makers and consumers and retailer have to understand the changing dynamics. If Indian panel and decorative market has to grow, Retailers have to learn/adopt to changes that are shaping up. Last two and half decade of my research & observations show a distinctive shift that retail stores need to know. That is why our conference IIR (India Interior Retailing) must be attended by ambitious retail and wholesale people. It's not on making a furniture unit as most of them won't sustain specially when market is unknown to majority of stake holders. To discover the possibilities, meet us at MATECIA exhibition where, 2nd edition of IIR conference will be held for 3 days on 2,3 & 4th September. Come to Delhi, learn at IIR, Network in exhibition with 200 + participants and go back with lots of clarity, sourcing points and new ideas. See you @ MATECIA, New Delhi on 2, 3, 4th September.

YAMUNANAGAR PLYWOOD INDUSTRIES TO SHUT DOWN THE BOILERS FOR A WEEK

;equkuxj IykboqM baMLVªh ,d lIrkg ds fy, c‚;yj can djsxh

The executive committee of HPMA (Haryana Plywood Manufacturers Association) has decided to shut down the boiler from July 21 to 25, 2022 due to the nonmovement of heavy load trucks during Kawad Yatra in the state. This means that production in plywood factories will be nearly halted over the next five days. According to the President of HPMA, Mr. J.K. Bihani, this decision has been taken keeping in mind the orders of the administration to keep the Lakkar Mandi closed from July 14 to 27 July, in view of the upcoming Kavad Yatra.

In fact, every year in the month of Shravan, the movement of heavy vehicles remains closed due to the Kavad Yatra. He also said that at present the prices of wood are also touching the sky because there is a severe shortage of available timber, so this decision will curb the tendency to buy at higher prices and will also help in balancing the demand-supply in the market.

According to the report, there has been a high jump in the rate of timber in the last 20 days, and production in factories has been reduced by almost half due to the lack of arrivals of timber of higher girth. The industry players believe that the scarcity of timber will persist this year. In the current rainy season, the availability of timber is likely to worsen due to less felling of trees as the agriculture labour involved remains more in crop farming.

lywood and wood panel products manufacturing has been badly hit by rising timber prices, which have been reported to have reached an all-time high. The high cost of timber has directly impacted the input cost of finished products. According to a report from Yamunanagar, the price of poplar wood, which is used to make all types of plywood, board and doors, has increased by 25% due to a lack of supply. Similarly, the Eucalyptus timber prices have also noted a high jump from Rs. 450 per quintal to Rs. 850 per quintal within a year. Timber contributes a major share of manufacturing of plywood products, so the producers are forced to increase the prices of finished products. Timber suppliers say that prices will not come down in the near future because of limited supply. As per the report from Yamunanagar (Haryana), Punjab, Uttarpradesh, Uttrakhand and other north India markets, the industry has been compelled to increase the prices of finished products, which has been affecting the lifting of materials. Industry sources also revealed that capacity utilisation has dropped drastically because of less demand and many small units are forced to stop production. As per the report, industry associations belonging to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR etc. have announced price hikes in different product categories few months before. In the end of the month of May 2022 commercial grade plywood and block board prices have been increased by the plywood manufacturers across the industry clusters in the country. The plywood associations have announced their respective price rises from 60 paisa to 80 paisa per glue line. The majority of them attributed it to rising material costs, particularly for chemicals and other items, which have increased the cost of production. www.plyreporter.com
